It really feels like Hua Cheng’s character was design to showcase just how ineffective and dare I even say useless heavenly officials truly are.

First, you have reports of a ghostly groom who’s really just Pei Ming’s bitter ex kidnapping brides and murdering god knows how many people over the past 100+ years. Yet heaven does pretty much nothing, and dumps the responsibility on a twice demoted scrap god. It takes Hua Cheng showing up, guiding Bride! Xie Lian to the ghost’s domain and destroying the barrier that kept away outsiders for the issue to even get resolved.

When Xie Lian needed to find information about Banyue pass and asked around heaven, they declined to enlighten him on anything. Meanwhile Hua Cheng (while in his San Lang disguise) tells him every detail, helps him on his journey, finds him the antidote for the scorpion snake bite, protects him while trapped in the Sinner’s pit and helps him with exposing Pei Jr. as the culprit.

Oh and then there’s the boy with the multi-faced disease that he asked Ling-Wen to look for several days ago, that took Hua Cheng all of two minutes to track down. Like come on!!!

Then there’s the whole Fang Xin Guoshi/Golden Feast Massacre incident Xie Lian was accused of. That took Hua Cheng only a few hours to uncover the truth and prove Xie Lian’s innocent. A matter that would have taken heaven who knows how long to settle.

Heaven is so bad at their job, Hua Cheng made a jab at them for how they would be dragging their feet when it came to dealing with Qi Rong’s underlings. Then proceeded to highlight that fact by literally making it rain with the blood of said underlings that he’d just slaughtered in that very instant.

obsessed with how dan feng describes yingxing as "that exceedingly arrogant craftsman" actually like its Really giving his lizard in-love-so-deeply-it-consumes-him ass just absolutely seething about the matter on the regular energy & i love that. like how this man (now permanently rent free in his head) just woke up with all his stats coincidentally minmaxed into fucking hypnotizing dan feng specifically with his autistic rizz who never stood a fucking chance. countless lifetimes spent in solitude regal and unattached and unaffected by others and then yingxing goes oh bet? and its all over. falling head first. swept off his feet. dumbstruck. sighing like a maiden. losing sleep to longing. knees weak. absolutely owned. and he KNOWS this.

I adore the fact that so many people in both MDZS and TGCF pretend to be someone other than who they are and invariably decide that the best possible disguise is one that involves them having exactly the same hair styles, fashion choices, color schemes, combat specialties, personalities, obsessions, and crushes as usual, and then turn around and pull a pikachu surprised face whenever they're inevitably discovered because they were so subtle??? how could anyone have recognized them??? they were nothing like themselves!

Wait, is there ever a reason why Feng Xin has a phobia of women? Does he have it due to some kind of trauma or is it just something played up for laughs?

The novel doesn’t really give much of his backstory, or any for that matter, and it seems to get forgotten later on. Does the revised version add up to it, or is it just forgotten?

FENG XIN  +  FEAR OF WOMEN

Feng Xin has suffered with severe gynophobia ( fear of women ) as long as most have known him. Even before Xie Lian first ascended , the book mentions how Feng Xin was already terrified of women for as long as Xie Lian had known him. So at bare minimum , since 14 when he officially became his imperial bodyguard , and likely probably known even earlier than that.

Several people who shared their stories said they could overcome it for certain situations and this is the case for Feng Xin. He can handle interacting with women just fine in certain circumstances. When there’s danger or when it comes to his followers and their prayers , he can handle it. We see him do it with the Ghost Bride scenario just fine, not just talking but even moving her somewhere safe. Similarly he can interact fine with The Queen and Ling Wen because those are duty situations. His interactions with them aren’t personal per say. Yes, personal matters come up , but protecting the royal family was part of Feng Xin’s duty which he never dropped even after the fall & banishment. It's his work, it's nothing personal Ling Wen it’s typically exchanging information & reports or being yelled at for fighting. It’s still in confines of relating to his duties. There is a clear task to deal with and this is just a part of it. He talks with them just fine in those scenarios. No mentions of panicking. Feng Xin can separate himself from ‘ duties ‘ and him. Excluding Xie Lian bc Xie Lian is everything to him. When it comes to saving people or work, he doesn't really have the TIME to think about it. He needs to focus on getting things done.

But the moment it becomes personal or isn't strictly for work, Feng Xin panics. He goes ghostly pale , he yells & swears , shivers and struggles to breathe , puts distance between them. Shi Qingxuan very nearly causes the man to pass out pressing against him & sends him into hysterics. And sure , it’s funny for everyone else. But for Feng Xin , it is genuine fear and panic. He can’t help it. He UNDERSTANDS it is irrational but it doesn’t help. He can handle talking if he really needs to , he’ll stutter and won’t make eye contact , but he can manage it. But if you start getting physically close , panic builds. Struggling to breath , verbal outbursts , cold sweat , chills , everything i said above. He doesn’t get aggressive, he would NEVER get aggressive, but HE will potentially get hurt trying to get away from them.

The situation with Jian Lan made it far worse. Because she was the first woman outside of work that Feng Xin finally started getting comfortable around , and then he got shoved away by her. It’s worth noting that even that took time. The book mentions that for a while , he would only sit and then gradually started to talk and eventually lead to more , though for all we know that could have only been 1 or 2 times. He wanted company, wanted to escape everything a bit. Even just sitting quietly in a room. In a way, it was unintentionally exposure therapy that helped teach him to at least talk & care with her. Many people with gynophobia mention they can be okay with certain women after exposure therapy like this. Not all, but some. It’s a very individual situation. Like with THIS woman I am comfortable but not others till getting to know them. That's how it was for Feng Xin.

Being rejected intensified Feng Xin’s phobia , not to mention over 800 years of it never being addressed. As a martial god , he doesn’t interact with many women besides his followers , and like I mentioned , he can handle that because it’s part of his duty ( despite his immense discomfort with how that has become one of his duties ). Time has just made it worse and worse.

But there ARE ways women can help make him more comfortable or talk. He’ll still be nervous, but bringing up things like animals, his pet dogs, archery, exploring the world, topics that Feng Xin knows and LIKES means he’ll be more inclined to talk. Still nervous, and not making eye contact , but he’ll talk , and he’ll slowly get more and more comfortable. And Feng Xin is a sweetheart , as he gets comfortable he’s more inclined to stop reacting so intensely or even go out of his way to maybe talk. It’s not instant , its a process , but he gets there and eventually he CAN get comfortable and interact with THOSE specific women as he would with others. But it’ very much for individual women and not a ‘ get over fear of all women ‘ situation.
