I saw the comment on your last ask and wanted to ask what's your 5th gen theory? I know that for me actually looking at the years 5th gen should have started already but it feels like we're still in 4th gen because no one other than a few girl groups have blown up the way that 3rd groups both boy and girl had and anyone who has gotten popular has been in last year or two. Making a big three comparison exo in their 3rd or 4th year was in a very different place than stray kids or treasure now

fifth gen HAS already started! just not where or how you would think. and for clarity's sake: i don't categorize gens by group popularity, and that would be a moot point anyways because the success of previous gen groups is never going to be replicated on the same scale because of how dramatically the industry has changed.

my fifth gen theory is this: there's already starting to be a generation change in the last year, but it's being lead by smaller companies who are unable to sustain the current fourth gen performance model, and subsequently there's either going to be a delayed transition where the big four companies will be the last to debut fifth gen groups, OR there's going to be a full split where big four and other well funded companies can keep producing groups in the fourth gen method, while every other smaller group has an entirely different performance method.

the main characteristic of fourth gen has been very strong and heavy dance skills paired with difficult choreography, on a scale that's much more extreme than previous gens. although a lot of third gen choreography was probably harder on its idols' bodies thanks to the acrobatics, third gen idols were still trained as well rounded performers and were able to transition smoothly out of their stuntmen eras and still be able to maintain their group's artistic identity. in order for companies to ramp up the spectacle factor from this, instead of tricking + stunts they prioritized technically difficult dance, which has translated into the bulk of fourth gen idols being by large, probably the most technically skilled generation of dancers. however, like i've said in previous asks, that has come as a detriment to pretty much every other skill that used to be trained into idols. making the sacrifice of dance vs singing is fine for companies that have the funds to support having big spectacular cbs and have large stable fanbases that consume uncaringly, but it's more of a problem with smaller companies who are getting priced out of being able to afford cbs to even hope to match the scale that fans are coming to expect. so as a result, they're going back to training their idols as more holistic performers and simplifying choreography. i know a lot of people are not paying attention to the rookie bgs but a lot of the ones from the last year and change have been a totally different calibre of performer than the established fourth gen groups, and it's likely to continue that way. my hypothesis is that the last company to catch on fifth gen is going to be the next jype bg, and how they perform is going to be the indication of if there's going to be a staggered transition or a full split.

Music May #4: EXO-CBX - Blooming Day (Throwback Thursday #3) release: April 2018 genre: Kpop

Thursday means another throwback, but this time we're only going as far back as 2018. And continuing the trend of Kpop despite having so many other options (so many), because I have the attention span of a small goldfish right now and EXO is a relatively easy group for me to write up. :p

Debuting in 2016, CBX combined Chen and Xiumin (originally of EXO-M) and Baekhyun (originally of EXO-K) and started as a way of combining the two halves of EXO in a smaller unit that produced music in the same overall vein as the main group while also making first forays into the Japanese market with Japanese-language releases starting in 2017. So a mix of ballads and dance-pop, since this is a subunit with two of the 4 original EXO main vocals, and a chance for Xiumin to shine a bit more.

As a song, Blooming Day is a sweet ballad with a question guaranteed to make fangirls swoon: can I be your boyfriend? It's a fun up-tempo dance beat with love song lyrics and considering who sings it, a perennial favorite. The image of the song is softer than previous EXO releases with a the members in very "boyfriend" styles throughout both the MV and the promotional period. An overabundance of flowers and softer colors on the sets further contribute to that almost cozy feel in the music video, with Baekhyun in particular looking very soft and fluffy throughout.

I don't normally bring up covers in these, but if you feel like you've heard this song again recently, it probably means you wartched the start of the new season of The Show, in which new MCs Xiaojun (NCT/WayV) and Hyeongseop (Tempest) joined returning MC Yeosang (ATEEZ) in forming special unit MC NAEggUZ (yes, this is a visual pun) for a special stage, which is actually a splice of at least two of the three times they performed it - a stylist put too much faith in just rolling Yeosang's sleeves in one run, so his left sleeve Does A Thing where the cuff slips and at one point falls out completely, yet is magically back (and then not and then back again) across several camera cuts. Which, uh, maybe says something about how many times I've watched this performance now, but the song's such a warm bop and I've needed that especially lately.

"Blooming Day" is the lead track off EXO-CBX's second mini album, Blooming Days, which may or may not be in stock wherever you typically buy these things if you're looking for physical copies, but certainly is up for digital purchase and streaming.

however she did have some fans! she had three fansites from the start which made her glad bc she didn't want to be embarrassed and not have any ... unlike the others DLDFN

especially because the stylists wouldn't let her wear shorts like the boys sigh

but nct dream and red velvet's promotions clashed this era!! she got to see her red velvet unnies more which was probably the most excited nctzens had seen her yet

red velvet made her sing some of russian roulette btw

fans went crazy bc they knew she was supposed to debut in red velvet

she also got to meet blackpink!! her and nari became really close despite the age difference, she also really liked jennie but overall she just really enjoyed their presence

and none of them judged her for being in a group full of boys 😌

when exo won first place during lotto louder and made nct stay on stage😭

oh she was so red she couldnt help it she was the biggest exol

she tried to stay away from lay, kai and chanyeol aka her biases 💀 and then she’d get to the other members and panic cause lbr … so she went and hid behind doyoung lol

she thinks its so funny in the contrast of outfits n concept when she sees a throwback vid on her sns

she loved being on the hoverboards though

she found them so cool

and was very glad she never fell off of them in public

she still has her hoverboard btw

she was mostly around mark or jaemin during this era while they were out in public

overall she was just very glad to be debuting finally but she wasn't happy about how fans were treating her

she could do boy group dances just as well

and her voice actually did fit in well with the boys, too

thats why they put her in nct dream

ngl although she knew, deep down in her heart she deserved to be there and that she was put in dream for a reason, she was still a 16 year old girl who was hurt at the insults hurled at her

so of course the hate got to her

debut was not really kind to her honestly

but she always almost always had her members by her side!! <3
