These days, you can find flights (an order of samplings or tastings of selected items) at many local restaurants. But if you thought they were only beer or cocktail related, think again. Establishments in the Elgin Area are bringing new meaning to what’s traditionally been considered a flight with soup flights, ice cream flights, and more.
Here’s a roundup of some of the creative food and drink flights you can find!

How Did Kanpur Become an Industrial Area?
Tumblr media
Kanpur, a city located on the banks of the Ganges River, has a rich history of industrial growth and development. Known as the “Manchester of the East,” Kanpur’s journey from a small town to a major industrial hub is fascinating. This transformation can be attributed to several factors, including its strategic location, historical events, and industrial initiatives. In this blog, we’ll explore the key elements that contributed to Kanpur’s industrial rise and highlight why partnering with the best digital marketing agency in Kanpur can be a game-changer for local businesses today.
Strategic Location and Early Beginnings
Kanpur’s geographical location played a significant role in its industrial development. Situated in the heart of Uttar Pradesh, Kanpur was well-connected by rail and road, making it an ideal spot for trade and commerce. The city’s proximity to the Ganges River provided an abundant water supply, which was crucial for many industries.
The British East India Company recognized Kanpur’s potential in the early 19th century. They established military outposts and began developing infrastructure, which laid the groundwork for future industrial growth. The construction of the Grand Trunk Road, connecting Kanpur to major cities, further boosted its commercial prospects.
The Cotton Textile
The real industrial boom in Kanpur began with the establishment of cotton textile mills in the mid-19th century. The city became a major center for cotton processing and production, attracting investments from both local and international entrepreneurs. The availability of raw materials, skilled labor, and favorable business conditions made Kanpur a textile powerhouse.
Several prominent mills, such as the Elgin Mills and the Lal Imli Mills, were established during this period. These mills not only produced high-quality textiles but also generated employment for thousands of people. The textile industry’s success laid a strong foundation for Kanpur’s industrial economy.
Diversified Industries
As Kanpur’s reputation as an industrial city grew, it began to diversify its industrial base. The leather industry emerged as another key sector, with Kanpur becoming one of the largest producers of leather goods in India. The city was home to numerous tanneries and leather processing units, which supplied products to both domestic and international markets.
In addition to textiles and leather, Kanpur also saw growth in other industries such as chemicals, engineering, and food processing. The establishment of the Kanpur Industrial Development Authority (KIDA) further accelerated industrial growth by providing infrastructure and support to new businesses.
Role of Government and Policies
Government policies and initiatives played a crucial role in shaping Kanpur’s industrial landscape. Post-independence, the Indian government focused on promoting industrialization in various regions, and Kanpur was identified as a key area for development. Policies aimed at encouraging investment, providing subsidies, and improving infrastructure were implemented, which attracted more industries to the city.
The establishment of educational and research institutions, such as the Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) Kanpur, also contributed to the city’s industrial growth. These institutions provided a steady stream of skilled professionals and fostered innovation and technological advancements.
Modern Era and Digital Marketing
Today, Kanpur continues to be an important industrial center, with a diverse range of industries contributing to its economy. The city has embraced modern technologies and digital marketing to stay competitive in the global market. Businesses in Kanpur, including those in traditional industries like textiles and leather, are leveraging digital marketing strategies to reach a wider audience and enhance their brand presence.
For companies looking to thrive in this digital age, partnering with the best digital marketing agency in Kanpur can be a game-changer. These agencies offer expertise in SEO, social media marketing, content creation, and more, helping businesses effectively navigate the digital landscape.
Conclusion
Kanpur’s transformation into an industrial powerhouse is a testament to its strategic location, historical significance, and the entrepreneurial spirit of its people. From its early days as a trading hub to its current status as a major industrial city, Kanpur has continuously evolved and adapted to changing times. As the city moves forward, digital marketing will play a crucial role in ensuring its industries remain competitive and continue to thrive in the global market.
By understanding the factors that contributed to Kanpur’s industrial growth, we can appreciate the city’s rich industrial heritage and look forward to its promising future. For businesses aiming to succeed in Kanpur, collaborating with the best digital marketing agency in Kanpur will be essential in achieving sustained growth and success. Embracing digital marketing strategies will not only enhance brand visibility but also ensure that Kanpur’s industrial legacy continues to flourish in the digital era.

Research Project
This year instead of doing two essays or having to keep a blog we have a research project or a dissertation. I am still going to keep this blog as I find it helpful to contextualize my work in relation to other work and helps me keep everything in one place.
For this project I am planning on exploring the ethics of collecting and displaying cultural, historical and artistic artefacts and potential solutions to the problems that arise here.
I want to do this as it is a topic I'm interested in and am thinking about as a potential career area. I also hope that doing this it might help me develop a more definite practice and explore scientific and experimental areas in art and science. I also want a better understanding of the concept of ownership and belonging of artefacts.
I plan to research this topic through colonialism and reparations, especially WW2 Nazi Looting. I also want to look into art theft both by individuals/ gangs and by bigger institutions and governments. I will look at museum ethics, I hope to be able to talk someone who works in a museum in the areas of ethics and/or curating a museum display. I haven't yet found many artists to look at, but I will look at Maeve Brennan and Picasso. I am going to particularly look at the Elgin marbles and native artefacts in places such as North America and Australia.
I am also going to look at Liverpool's part in colonialism and art theft.
I want to look into a new type of curating, a way to bring the scared back to objects and return their deeper social context to them, rather than just have them seen as a display pieces. If this is not possible then I would like to look into ways of creating respectful replicas to display.

June 8th-21st: Last Weeks in Granada + First Week in Juigalpa
*I apologize for the lack of photos in this post.  They will be coming soon!*
My last week and a half in Granada included my final Spanish and Instrumentation lectures, two frustrating but insightful trips to Ticuantepe, some exciting weekend adventures, and lots of good-byes.  We finished our Spanish classes with a comprehensive exam, which tested our knowledge on both language and the history of Nicaragua.  Afterwards, the teachers threw us a farewell party, complete with Spanish-related games, a piñata, and some delicious local pizza.  I’m thankful for my experiences with NSLS, and I really feel that my Spanish has improved significantly with them.  I’ll miss my discussions with my classmates, McKenna and Jack, and my professor, Maria Lydia; however, I’m excited and ready to immerse myself in an entirely Spanish-speaking hospital.
During our last engineering lecture, Iyad had a personal discussion with us about our preparedness for the second month and how we should appreciate this one-of-a-kind opportunity.  He explained that at his current point in life, where he is married, has children, and works full-time at a university, he would never have the chance to travel to another country for two months and volunteer at a hospital.  We should be fortunate, he said, and I could not agree more.  Would I able to do this in two years or so, after I’ve graduated from GW and started working somewhere?  I mean, maybe, but probably not.  He explained that we should do everything we can to take advantage of the second month, including learning about new devices, making a positive impact on the hospitals, and making lasting friendships with both our coworkers and host families.
For my last two Friday hospital visits (June 9th and June 16th), I traveled to the city of Masaya.  On the first day, our coordinator told us that one of the doctors needed two students that could test some donated hospital devices in another area.  Seth, my Month 2 partner, volunteered to go, as did I - I figured it’d be good to start developing a working relationship with him.  We met Dr. Vidal Ruiz, an interesting individual with a quirky sense of humor.  He began driving us to what we thought was a satellite hospital campus where the devices were stored.  However, we soon realized that something had been lost in translation, since he ended up driving us to his house in Ticuantepe.  When we arrived, we assembled a table and some chairs and quickly got to work.  The equipment was difficult to sort through… There were boxes overflowing with cables, dusty and neglected defibrillators, stacks of ECG paper and bandages, and more.  From the get-go, I was frustrated by the lack of organization and I felt that I had no idea where to start.  For someone who can be a little too analytical and methodical, I realized that I needed to overcome this frustration and just look at the devices one by one.  Seth and I went through a bunch of AEDs, patient monitoring systems, IV pumps, and more.  By the end of the day, we had sorted the devices by their degrees of functionality, and we wrote some notes explaining what we had done.  Next Friday, I went back to Masaya and was once again asked to work at Dr. Vidal’s house.  This time, Jack volunteered to come with me.  We went through some more devices, and this time I felt more satisfied with what we had accomplished.  We called Dr. Vidal, explained what we had worked on, and headed back to Granada.
Over the past two weekends, I hiked the Mombacho Volcano (which included ziplining over the forest canopy) and relaxed on Ometepe Island.  Mombacho was great.  The volcano is considered semi-active, but it hasn’t erupted in 20,000 years.  For that reason, a lush rainforest has grown on top, which was beautiful to hike through.  From the top, we could see Granada, Lake Nicaragua, and Las Isletas - little island chains in the lake near Granada.  If Mombacho was great, then ziplining was amazing.  Flying through the air over the trees was an experience like no other, and we even got to see a bunch of monkeys hanging out in the trees.  The following weekend, 11 of us traveled to Ometepe, an island on Lake Nicaragua formed by two colossal volcanoes.  The only way to get there is by driving to the town of Rivas and taking a ferry across the lake.  During the trip, a bunch of us hiked to a beautiful waterfall called La Cascada de San Ramon.  It was by far the biggest waterfall that I’ve ever seen, and standing underneath the water felt incredible.  The next day, a couple of us biked for 4 hours to see a natural spring pool called Ojo de Agua.  I really liked Ojo de Agua, but I was surprised to see that it looked more like a community pool than a watering hole hidden in the forest, which is kind of what I was imagining.  The most exciting part of the trip was seeing 4 tarantulas, two of which happened to be in my shoe (I noticed this after I put my foot in; it was terrifying and I screamed quite a bit).  We left Ometepe early in the morning on Monday, and arrived back in Granada around 10:30AM.  I finished up last-minute tasks, like doing my laundry and replying to some emails, packed my bags, and spent the night saying good-bye to friends and my Nicaraguan family.  I was sad to leave everyone, but excited to start my new journey in Juigalpa.
Yesterday, Seth and I were driven from Granada to Juigalpa, where we met our new homestay family.  Our family is a proud owner of a pizza restaurant, which happens to be connected to their house!  We had some of their pizza for dinner last night and it was amazing.  My new mom’s name is Lesbia, and she has a 26-year-old daughter, Lesja, and a 25-year-old son, Jader.  Karen, Jader’s wife, also lives with them, along with their 3-year-old daughter, Isabel.  Our first day with them was really interesting.  They drove us to a nearby town called Santo Thomas, where we had delicious quesillo and seafood.  When we came back to Juigalpa, Seth and I passed out, woke up for dinner, explored the town a bit, and then passed out again.
Today was our first day in the hospital.  We met the crew of maintenance workers: Jose, Elgin, Jader, Hector, and Pedro.  We spent the day working with Jose, and we fixed a ventilator (which ended up in the pediatric ICU unit) and then we worked on some pulse oximeters.  The guys are a friendly and funny bunch, and I’m looked forward to working more with them.  I would write more about this first day at the hospital, but unfortunately, I’m at the point where I’ve been writing this blog post for a pretty long time and I’m about to pass out :(  One thing that I’d like to acknowledge - I have stronger wifi here in Juigalpa, so I’m hoping to update this blog more!  With that said, hopefully there will be more stories coming soon :)

The Elite Disgruntled's Real World Heavyweight Championship Title History.
How have I been since I finished my intense post (two/three days have passed in that time)? It is almost like I need to put out spoilers. Am I NXT, ROH, NJPW on Axs? Or am I Impact?
Acknowledging my trauma from sexual assault in regards to the wrestling business was therapeutic. I will have probably given the post at least one more proofread, more time to work through it, relive it, regret it. At least the expectations are known...except for  a significant loss of @maineventzombie Twitter followers (80 to 75, guess I am as insincere as those saying my anti-Southern Pride blog claim). As long as Kavanaugh has not made any decisions between now and then, my outlook should not be any more dire.
With that thought, placing our cats in suspended animation when we are not at home to extend their lives should be a technology to explore and to patent. We can use my girlfriend's cat, a cooler and some dry ice to start. Then there will be no more need to inquire my readers about helping me out in finding a way to promote my B-movie pro-wrestling zomcom, Main Event of the Dead, I would be happy to send you a treatment if you e-mail me at [email protected].
Placing a plug there reminds me that Redbox may need my film. "Black Water" with Jean Claude Van Damme and Dolph Lundgren amused me, but was 15 minutes too long to warrant any more coverage a submarine B-movie that was filmed on one sound stage deserves. Sound stage may be too generous. It may have been whatever floor in an office building the production company claims to be their's.
With "Main Event of the Dead," there are no illusions that there will not be a variety of sets. Trying to convince us that the same control room desk is on opposite sides of the sub will not be an issue. But, with the next rewrite, maybe we could set it in a submarine instead of Don's in Donahue or The Eagles Club in Berwyn.
"Black Water" shows me that finding the perfect length for a project is important, so since this is the end of my "Disgruntled's Real World Champion" blog, I worked on a summary of the past four entries' lists to fill up any empty space. Hopefully, my last ditch effort for discussion, will not be like that film.
2014 to Now:
77th World Heavyweight Champion - WWE's Randy Orton (1) - 12/15/13 to 4/6/2014
Since this is Orton's second to last reign as WWE/World Champion, I almost got away with keeping him out of the Real World Champion narrative. Adam Cole had won a tournament to claim the vacant ROH title, but that was just the start of him breaking out on a national level. This is the closest we have been to one champion since Chris Jericho, so I cannot deny who The Ringer's Dave Shoemaker calls, "The measuring stick for a WWE superstar," his place in history.
78th World Heavyweight Champion - WWE's Daniel Bryan (3) - 4/6/14 to 6/9/14
If I think back to 2015, I am sure Bryan had said he was the unbeaten champion upon his return, but if you are that, you need to pull the Shawn Michaels's Intercontinental Championship gimmick and bring your belts with you. Ironically, he would be relegated via ladder match to the IC title upon his brief return.
79th World Heavyweight Champion - ROH's Adam Cole - 6/9/14 to 6/22/14
The WWE spent 20 days vacant, and there was only one champion available. I know Total Nonstop Action has been excluded, but can you sell me on Eric Young over Adam Cole Bay Bay?
80th World Heavyweight Champion - ROH's Michael Elgin - 6/22/14 to 9/6/14
Bobby Lashley might be the better person, but Big Mike is the better all around worker.
For TNA/Impact Marks:
Sorry Dixie. Let it be known, when I originally started working on the list, I was doing my best to take the TNA World Championship into consideration. But, when it was WWE light, their former WWE talent that captured their highest title was reminiscent of Verne Gagne and Vince McMahon Sr. trying to prove the NWA wrong. This also left the WWE presence constantly overshadowing their "home grown" talent. I think AJ Styles was not a fully formed wrestler until he walked away from the company.
Having been involved with the business, the more places to make money the better should be my mindset. But TNA/Impact feels like a drag on the business since they never seem to do anything right. It just drives me nuts to hear people say, "they're really getting better," and then how they shot themselves in the foot. If I wanted trying to get better, I will drive to towns 30 minutes outside of a metropolitan area to catch a no budget, $20 talent indie instead of adding $15 a month on my cable bill. To see that stuff with a large budget bothers me, so Impact bothers me.
81st World Heavyweight Champion - WWE's Brock Lesnar (4) - 9/6/14 to 3/29/2015
You cannot put a chicken farmer, a Briscoe, up against a former Ultimate Fighting Championship Heavyweight Champion.
82nd World Heavyweight Champion - WWE's Seth Rollins (2) - 3/29/15 to 11/4/15
If you are going to cash in Money in the Bank, do it at the one place where no one can deny your cunning.
83rd World Heavyweight Champion - ROH's Jay Lethal - 11/4/15 to 8/19/2016
Jay Lethal was defending two titles at this time and managed to hold ROH's most prestigious title over a year. Roman Reigns's first three title reigns all occurred during this time frame.
84th World Heavyweight Champion - New Japan's Kazuchika Okada - 8/19/16 - 6/9/2018
The title reign was nearly two years. During this reign, the champion defended against the ROH Champion Cody on national TV in the United States. The Universal Title has had only one interesting title reign (Kevin Owens), and it could be said that Okada may have ran AJ Styles back to the United States. Kenny Omega may have helped with that as well.
Current World Heavyweight Champion - New Japan's Kenny Omega.
The list is meant for discussion, so please bring it on. Here is the list of champions (1983 to July 94 [tumblr limits]) along side their pretenders. Enjoy.
Key: NWA Reigns, WWF/WWE, WCW, ECW

Lista Ng Mga Mainstream Spots Na Ayoko EP 02
Pagkagising ko today, ayaw niya akong tantanan so go! Napaka babaw. Everything about it is just too made up.  I tried looking for the hidden Mickey pero wala e. Jusko. Bakit sila ginagawang accessory to capitalism? Bakit kahit na isipin ko na they are well taken cared of, ang sakit-sakit pa rin ng puso whenever I see them? May sariling station ‘yung papuntang Ocean Park. Jusko. Gusto ko na lang umuwi. Mag-bike sa city side and mag-photowalk tapos sumakay ng ferry.  VICTORIA PEAK, Hong Kong  Hindi ko magets why tourists need to go to The Peak.
Nakakasad kasi with progress ba talaga comes a huge cost na endangering the sustainability of a rich and vibrant city?
Honestly, gusto ko ‘yung breath-taking in real life na nasasabi kong photos and videos do not do justice to the places I visit level. Ganyan. ‘Yung swelling ‘yung insides ko na pakiramdam. ‘Yun.
Go for exploring the city on a bike and via ferry and bus. Tapos ride all the colors ng cab, too. Merong malapit sa Little Bao. Parang First United sa Escolta siya pero ‘yung mas organized and mas progressive. Too bad na hindi ko binili ‘yung wooden musical box na handmade na Little Prince. Sigh. Daming artists sa HK. Try mo rin ‘yung mga free tours nila depending on the season.
RUINS OF ST. PAUL, Macau Probably one of the most disappointing landmarks na pinuntahan ko to date kasi though super steal ng deal na na-score ko from HK to Macau both for transpo and tour, hindi talaga siya makatarungan in ALL aspects.
The place gets easily congested kasi nga maliit lang siya tapos wala ka pang mapag-stayan to chill and people watch.
Go for exploring ‘yung mga old world feels ng mga kalsada ng Macau lalo ‘yung mga hindi matao.
RECLINING BUDDHA, Thailand  Hindi talaga ako fan ng mga temples and mga museums in general though I like history. Hindi ko alam kung bakit kasi they are supposedly co-existing pero thing is, ang dalang kong makatagpo ng museum and temples na authentic ang vibe. Minsan iniisip ko if yung mga relics/artifacts e tampered na or worse, replica na lang. And the reclining buddha is not an exception kahit na I hoped na sana ‘wag ganun. First stop, ang daming tao and ang gulo-gulo which is very unbecoming considering na temple siya. Hindi ba realistic, pero sana kasi maramdamin ko man lang ‘yung solemnity or at the very least, the calmness of the place, but no. Plus, nakita ko pa ‘yung mga jars/vases na may paandar na lagyan ng coins for good luck or wish or whatever. Grabe. Dinaig pa wishing well na kahit magkano lang ibato mo, good to go na ‘yung good luck or wish mo. I really cannot stomach it.  Go for the less known temples. Similar naman ‘yung architecture nila so maganda pa rin magpicture and all pero madadama mo ‘yung break from the bustling city sa mga medyo mas hindi kilalang temple. Actually, we just stumbled upon a temple nung killing time kami for the famous/infamous crab omelette spot nearby. Hindi pa kasi bukas because we did not have any reservations. We were so lucky that we were able to climb the temple all the way to the top. Had the chance to reflect and feel that calmness. Plus, I got to see the non-stereotypical na mga monks. One of them pa nga had a large tattoo in full color. Was so tempted to ask if I can take a snap/video of him pero sabi ko I had to temper myself kasi monk e.
Effort pang puntahan kasi medyo in the middle of nowhere siya at wala ng ibang katabing mga spots. Seems like ginawa lang talaga ‘yung place para puntahan for photos, so, lels and luhs. So, go ka if ang gusto mo e isang series ng feed na pangmalakasan pero walang nakakabit na kwento at quotes lang ang panlaban mo.
Go for a cooking class under Chef Liz instead. Sobrang sulit and to be honest, ‘yung mga niluto namin sa class na ito beat the shit out of the restaurant food na magaganda ang reviews sa TripAdvisor or mga blogs or vlogs combined. Best ever sticky rice to think na ang sasarap na ng mga sticky rice be it sa tabing-daan or sa classy restos. ‘Yung rice kasi ang nagdala since ‘yung paggawa niya is not mass produced plus ‘yung coconut cream is made from scratch as well. Rice was cooked traditionally as well and was served hot and that elevated the satisfaction level even more. Sobrang passionate pa ni Chef Liz and her school helps girls to finish their studies.
Will definitely go for recos nina Mark Wiens and Mikey Chen, instead. ‘Wag na isama si Anthony Bourdain kasi given naman na ‘yun. So, we tried some of his recos and sakto lang. Underwhelming.
Go for the spots na medyo shady man e frequented ng locals. As in ‘yung medyo tabi ng estero, nasa tagong pasilyo or nasa weird location like in between ng mga automotive supplies area. Basta, go where the locals go. Bring lang your own water bottle para mas may safety blanket ka and Loperamide if mahina tummy mo, but I did not have a queasy tummy naman ever sa trips ko so far.
CHATUCHAK MARKET, Thailand  Ang init noong punta namin is hotter than Divisoria levels. Ang to be honest, any clothing na tiangge find worth 200 PHP is pricey na for me. Wala ring wow factor sa mga stalls so I got bored easily --20 minutes to be exact. ‘Yung mga tindera pa doon sa mga pinuntahan namin e napakakikinis at napakapuputi so nakakahiyang tumawad for me. Iniisip ko lang paano nila na-achieve ‘yung ganung level na kakinisan and kaputian in life.
Skip the shopping and go for a food trip. Ang daming masasarap na street food doon. Better get a Grab/Uber na rin kasi ang hirap kausap ng mga cab drivers.  EGG COFFEE, Vietnam  Got my fix in Giang Cafe, ang OG na creator ng egg coffee sa Hanoi. Maganda ‘yung lugar kasi very old school siya. Maganda rin ‘yung spot ko kasi overlooking ‘yung kalsadang puno ng mga motorbikes and gabi pa so mas putok na putok ang prod-like vibe. Pero ‘yung coffee itself, okay lang. Nothing special. Hindi man ako fan ng coffee, whenever I go to new place, I always taste coffee kasi it reflects culture.  Go for the weasel coffee in hazelnut. I was asked to sample it ang sinabi nung good-natured owner na weasel nga daw ‘yun. Sobrang mura. May libre pang coffee dripper kaya sold na ako, solve pa. Plus points kasi hindi rin ako fan ng hazelnut, but it tasted so good.
HA LONG BAY, Vietnam  El Nido 5ever, mumsh! Nadali ako nito kasi UNESCO-approved ito. ‘Di ko napagtanto na four hours ‘yung one-way trip dito so basically, isang buong araw ‘yung nakain sa stay ko. Nakakatawa sa cave kasi para maganda ang look, nilagyan nila ng mga ilaw which made it so pretentious. Our tour guide was really full of effort pero no deal. Points for the old world looks ng boats and napaka walang hassle na pag-tour na walang kahit anong mababasa sa’yo unless mag-kayak ka.
Go for biking around the city and nearby places. I had one very early in the morning. I arrived in Hanoi at 1:30 AM then rachada na ako ng 5:30 AM. Wonder how it looks ‘pag gabi on my bike.
Looking forward to more trips na walang itinerary masyado and more focused sa interaction and immersion with locals for a more authentic experience na surely one for the books and hindi confined sa feed goals. Oh, the roads less traveled! See you.

On the Road: 2018 Ottawa

______
TRAVEL / ARRIVAL /  LODGING
We left Toronto via VIA Rail bound for Ottawa, with the train making a few minor stops along the route. I don’t know how popular or utilized Canada’s train system is between Alberta and Manitoba, but I imagine it gets more-regular, higher-volume use in central and eastern Canada, and in the rockies. It’s a scenic way to travel, if you’re traveling someplace scenic. I’ve done plenty of European trains in the past, but only once previously in Canada, back in 2010, heading west from Montreal to Toronto. That first trip inspired some unexpected motion sickness (oddly jittery ride), and was plagued by neighbouring passengers loudly having an idiotic conversation. No such issues this time around.
We sat in a booth-like configuration facing one another with a table between us and one stranger. Trip took about four hours, which passed well-enough, though my body wasn’t happy with me following the 12km Toronto walk I’d recently completed. Hard to get/stay comfortable when everything hurts. I spent most of the ride reading Anthony Bourdain’s A Cook’s Tour, and ate a pricey but strategic ham & cheese sandwich from the VIA menu.

______
Upon arrival, we took the bus into town and then walked to our Air B&B near the university. The climate here, even during this part of the year, is sweltering and stiflingly humid. The unit where we stayed is a suite in an old house - one probably occupied by two students for the majority of the year. It had many signs of being hastily renovated by an amateur trying to spruce things up unsuccessfully. The layout was bizarre and bordering on non-functional in most rooms, and overall was grittier and dumpier than had been advertised. There was also no air conditioning, but thankfully there were two rotary fans available. Most evenings were spent reading on the awful little couch in the common area.
The unit didn’t have a dishwasher machine, nor could I find a plug for the sink (which I didn’t notice was absent until our last night when I planned to do all the washing up at once). As a result, I’m not sure if the supplied dishes/flatware/etc had been washed properly by the owners or previous guests/tenants, or ever. (They... seemed clean?) So I had to improvise a solution in order to wash anything. But no AC in this climate, the bad layout, uncomfortable rooms, kitchen mysteries, etc. - and it was more expensive than the better one we’d just left in Toronto. I’d be unlikely to stay in this place ever again.
RIDEAU STREET / ORIENTATION / TRANSIT
We were based near the University just south of Rideau. Other parts of the neighbourhood felt like they were peppered with drug dens, but no one caused trouble for us. From Rideau, we were able to reach the market nearby, as well as the parliament area and the interprovincial bridge. Pretty walkable and not likely to get lost. We walked a great deal, as usual.
Rideau also had several grocery stores, along with record and book stores, and the Ottawa-branch of Steve’s Music (I’d also visited the same store in Toronto, but liked Ottawa’s better). I really did a lousy job exploring book/record shops on this trip, and missed out visiting any here.
Transit in Ottawa echoes Edmonton’s: unreliable. On a particularly hot afternoon where we had an appointment to keep, our bus passed us by without stopping, after already running late. Maybe their definition of “full “is different from ours. Later transit efforts proved more successful. There’s a lot of construction going on, as Ottawa works toward implementing an underground LRT system.
BEST BREAKFASTS
All my best breakfasts in Ottawa involved smoked salmon. Zak’s Diner does a nice salmon and eggs plate with salad, potatoes, bagel, and beans. They also offer Benedicts, but given the “all-day breakfast” service, I wasn’t sure how fresh the Hollandaise would be. I didn’t regret my order. I like their slogan: “Don’t Starve!”

Elsewhere in the market, The Original Continental Bagel Co. served decent Montreal-style bagels in various unpretentious sandwich presentations. I did lox, onions, and cream cheese. Solid breakfast, but not too heavy a start to the day.

BEST DINNERS
Bite Burger House serves a variety of different gourmet-meat burgers. Normally that’s not really my thing, but they did a good job of it. I had a swiss & mushroom burger, and and a surprisingly good Old Fashioned. And the leftover, mac & cheese ended up being our daughter’s supper for the next two nights. It was also good, and surprisingly rich.

Le Mein Craft Noodles was good but also ludicrous. They have a very small menu (half of which seems to only be available on weekends). So you basically order noodle bowls, some contain broth, some don’t. You pick your size of noodles, size of bowl, and level of spiciness. The missus and I had the same kind of soup, with different noodles. Hers was spicy and small (which was roughly the size of a large pho in most places). Mine was mild and large, and took up half the table. It was literally a tureen-sized bowl, probably with 2L of broth. And the noodles, while tasty, were almost impossible to lift because of their size. I ate as much as I could before we had to get the wee one to bed, and took the rest home. I’m not sure I received all of my broth in the container, though I suppose the noodles might have continued to absorb the fluid. There was virtually no broth in the container when I next opened it, sadly.

OTHER MEALS AND ALMOST MEALS
First food in town was down Rideau at the well-regarded Shawarma Palace. As it was near bed time, I walked over, grabbed a chicken shawarma platter takeaway, and we all shared it back at the house. Not bad, though the chicken was pretty dry by the time I got any in me.

Our main reason for the detour to Ottawa was to visit a friend of ours who now lives here. We haven’t seen her for several years. The Lieutenant’s Pump is a pub she recommended over in the Elgin area where we met her for lunch. They make a decent grilled-cheese-plus sandwich, though I wasn’t mad about the service. The shaded patio was nice on the hot day, but did give everything a yellow hue. Shaded or otherwise, the humidity was impossible to escape outdoors.

On our last day in town, we again connected with our friend for lunch. After a long walk together, we stopped at another of her recommended joints in Little Italy: Pub Italia. I couldn’t really figure out the theme of the place, but it’s sort of an Irish Pub, in Little Italy, but decked out in lots of religious themes. A heavily air-conditioned curiosity. I offended our server by ordering a Ukrainian beer by its name, which apparently nobody else has ever done, and she refused to try and pronounce it once she understood what I’d ordered. L’vivs’ke Beer for breakfast, followed by a disappointingly cardboard-like Margherita pizza. The beer was good, though.

Another good idea on a hot day: blackberry and lemon gelato. Also gave this Harvey & Vern’s Cream Soda a try, though sodas and ice cream are only a good pairing if you mix them.

HISTORICAL BUILDINGS / MUSEUMS
My past has left me jaded and indifferent to most museums, galleries, and other historical fancy places. I’ve seen enough cathedrals, palaces, etc. to last a lifetime, and really don’t need to see any others - unless the subject matter is something very special to me. I didn’t bother entering the parliament or any of the Canadian Gov’t buildings while we were here, though my wife did explore some of those related to her interests.
We did cross the Interprovincial Bridge and visited the Canadian Museum of History (formerly the Canadian Museum of Civilization) one afternoon. I best enjoyed the 20th Century area, but there’s lots of stuff here to explore if you’re into Canada as a subject. The wee one also enjoyed the museum’s area for children.

We also visited the Victoria Memorial Museum toward the end of our stay. It contains lots of exhibitions to do with animals, plants, fossils, the sea, etc. Over their entrance is a large inflated jellyfish which my daughter has decided is her friend and for whom she authored an elaborate history.
Given the time of year, it seems as though every school within 100km of Ottawa is scheduling their field trips to coincide with our visit. This place was overrun with groups of screaming teenagers, confused school children, and frazzled chaperones. Busy to the point of being difficult to walk around because you’d suddenly get swarmed, jammed-up, and passed-by, and it would happen again two minutes later. Several areas contained live animals in aquaria or in display cases, and too many people tapped, banged, yelled, or otherwise disturbed the inhabitants for my liking.
Hard to enjoy yourself here, under the circumstances, which was a shame.

______
CITY ATTITUDE / STYLE / CLIMATE
I’ve had a hard time getting a sense of who/what Ottawa is during this stay. One of the strange things about the place is that it really feels like Edmonton, which was totally unexpected. Not in the sense of weather, of course, but in the architecture and general run-down feeling of several areas we visited. If Edmonton still had 100 year old walk-ups strewn about, the effect would be even stronger. Even our friend living in Ottawa thought so. It’s not a town I’ve ever given much thought to, so I don’t know what I expected going in - maybe, being a Federal capital, that it might have more of an international flavour to it. Other than hearing a lot more French spoken, I didn’t really get a sense of that.
As I’ve already said, the weather here is bordering on inhuman for someone from the dry prairies. Most days were very warm. Every day was very humid. Another peculiarity: the hottest point of the day, every day, seemed to begin around 10:00PM (22:00), after dark, and then continued to intensify into the night, radiating through every room. Ottawa is further south than Edmonton, so the sky was dark around 9:00PM (21:00) every night, adding to the bizarre dynamic.
Most of the areas of Toronto we visited had average-to-good-looking people dressed badly. On average, the people in Ottawa were dressed much better, but often more conservatively. Many people of all genders could be seen wearing shorts, though they fit better here - and given the ghastly humidity it’s almost hard to blame them. Almost. And, as was the case with the museums we visited, endless packs of tourist groups and students in the wilderness clogged sidewalks and doorways.
LEAVING / AIRPORT
We really expected a deluge on our last day, thanks to the clouds and peak humidity, but it didn’t happen before we left. A rocky and prolonged bus ride took us to the airport, winding through the previously-unseen downtown before landing on a freeway area. The downtown looked rather like Edmonton’s too. Major areas of both cities must have been built-up heavily in the 1970s.
The airport itself was fine, but curiously busy. A long, long line at security had other travellers confused as well. One woman near us who visits the airport regularly told me she’d never seen the security line so long before. No idea why today was different. Airport food is almost as notoriously uninteresting as airplane food. With few dining options in the terminal; we opted for pre-made cafe sandwiches - pricey but adequate. The airport had a small play area for toddlers, where our daughter played without issue for a long time and befriended any other kids who wandered into her domain.
Air Canada can be hit-and-miss, but the fight home was one of the best I’ve had in years - and only marginally longer than a flight from Toronto would have been. This was an unfamiliar configuration of airplane - two rows of paired seats all the way down, rather than rows of three or some other stagger. I guess fewer people fly to Edmonton from Ottawa than from Toronto, hence the smaller plane. My seat-mate was unobtrusive enough to have not existed, which was nice. Our daughter nearly slept the whole way home, which mystified her parents as it has never happened before.

CLOSING THOUGHTS
Ottawa’s a bit of a question mark to me. I went in with no strong expectations, but left underwhelmed. It felt a lot like bizarro-Edmonton to me, and that’s kind of how I have to frame it.
In my life, I’ve heard/read countless people who had no background in Edmonton criticize the city as ugly, formless, unnecessary, or any other number of pejorative descriptions. Though far from perfect, I never agreed with those assessments of Edmonton. But I have history there; they don’t. Those critics didn’t get Edmonton, and didn’t bother trying to. Having been to Ottawa, I think I understand how they felt for the first time.
Ottawa: It’s Alright - not much of a slogan, but it fits.
Our friend is happy living here, and I’m glad for that. Unless something changes someday, we’ve probably no reason to return. For better or worse, it didn’t really make much of an impression on me.

Drinking Wine: Good for the Heart, Bad for Teeth?
Most of us have heard that drinking red wine may have heart-healthy benefits. And while there’s still some debate on just how true that is, you may find it surprising that there may just be some oral health benefits to partaking in glass every now and then. Our dental office in Columbia explores these potential smile benefits as well as some not-so-good side effects in this week’s blog.
The Good
Studies conducted in several areas throughout the world have suggested a positive link between drinking red wine and a decrease in tooth decay. One of these studies published by the Journal of Agriculture and Food Chemistry took bacteria rich biofilm from the mouths of several volunteers, which they then dipped into wine. What they found was that the wine was effective at getting rid of the bacteria. With less bacteria around to weaken enamel and cause decay, one could also assume a lower risk for cavities. However, it might not be all good news.
The Bad
In most of the studies surrounding the positive correlation between red wine and dental health the researchers removed the alcohol content prior to testing. This is important to note since we know alcohol tends to dry out the mouth. A dry mouth has the opposite effect of fighting off decay and actually supports a decay-friendly environment. Red wine also has a tendency to transform teeth from a bright white to a dull or discolored appearance. While that can usually be reversed through whitening or cosmetic dentistry from your dentist in Columbia, it’s still a negative in our book. Finally, the acidity of wine can wear down tooth enamel and leave teeth exposed to, you guessed it, decay.
The Final Verdict
We don’t really have a definite conclusion on whether the potential positives of red wine outweigh the negatives. Essentially, more research is needed for us to get on board with supporting the claim that red wine is a good way to fight decay. But in the meantime, we’re not here to tell anyone to stop enjoying their occasional glass of wine, of course. Just enjoy responsibly, keep an eye out for any tooth discoloration, and follow the tips below.
Alternate drinking wine with water. If you can, it wouldn’t hurt to rinse your mouth out with water occasionally, too.
Hold off on brushing immediately after drinking wine to keep the acid from being spread throughout your entire mouth and all over your teeth.
If you’re a red wine lover and happen to notice some tooth discoloration, call our Columbia dental office to schedule a professional whitening or cosmetic dentistry treatment to get your smile back to a vibrant white. Or if you’re just looking for a new place to call your dental home, we’re always welcoming new patients and would love to see you. Schedule a visit with us today!
Welcoming patients from Columbia, Elgin, Lugoff.
