Mmm can I hear about the Araunian Empire? Whatever you think is most interesting about it :3

So, I won't get into why they blew up, because I'm not done worldbuilding it hoping to keep that a bit of a mystery, but I'd love to talk about their culture!

The Araunian Empire existed as the first great center of civilization on Illaros. They had runic magic, came up with the first writing system, and built vast trade networks despite not allowing foreigners into their cities. They also came up with the first calendar system and existed by its measure for several thousand years, disappearing about four thousand years ago from the present day.

Their cities were built like giant compounds. Think Çatalhöyük or a nicer version of Kowloon Walled City. The roofs of these vast structures served as markets, while the interior was far more residential. Enchantments ensured that even the most enclosed depths received natural sunlight.

The Araunian revered the sun, in fact. They worshipped it and the mind of Beginning that lived within. They saw the world's colors as a blessing and thus painted their cities brightly. Each city had its own code of colors painted on the outside, so you would know that you had arrived at Dualn by its blue and yellow, or Eyma by its pink and red. As much as they worshipped the sun, they feared the night. Superstition stated that if you went outside at night, the stars might snatch you away or whisper in your mind. This is why their cities were built as compounds - so people didn't have to be outside once the sun set. Most Araunian saw this as more of a suggestion though, so many more sketchy parts of the market stayed open at night. Even so, it became tradition to avoid the stars.

The Araunian people were also brightly colored. Their skin and hair could be anything from red to brown to purple and everywhere in between. They stood a bit shorter and broader than humans and had slightly pointed ears. No Araunians exist in the present day because of the whole "their empire blew up" thing, but you can still see eyes of bright orange, red, or gold in some dwarven and human populations. In fact, many elements of dwarven writing are believed to have Araunian origins, as they traded the most closely with them back in the day.

And that's about it, I think. They were a highly technologically advanced society even by modern standards. Their xenophobia prevented much spread of these ideas, though, so most of their incredible tech found nothing more than a sandy grave. But mostly, the Araunians were just people going about their lives.

maybe tell me about the plot and the characters. i know there's this one lady who goes apeshit and gets revenge on everyone (good for her)

To put it simply. Due pollution slowly killing the earth big mids create an artificial planet to move people into. To avoid that to happen again we find ourselves in a kind of futuristic past where we went back in time but have technology.

This village we follow is ruled by a sort of pope, and the church has all the money. When rich people and scientists started aiming for the ruling powers the church decided to start a witch hunt claiming witches are the minds behind some attacks that happened in the city. Necticula, Angela and Eymas are childhood friends and they operate secretly to save these girls and send them away by sneaking them into Angela's nunnery.

And this is the plot explained very poorly haha while lilith is like..how do i express it. She is a witch let's start like that, i created her getting inspo from Baccus and his maenads or bacchantes, Giulia Tofana and a sprinkle of Circe.

She witnessed her mother's abuse by the hands of her father and she saw her killing him, she decided then to help women escaping or killing their abusers like Giulia Tofana, and when the witch hunt starts she hides these girls with her. At the beginning Necticula and the others are going after her bc she is a fury or anger and resentment and she started to come out of the shadows and kill a bunch of people like that. She also really really REAAAAlly hates men with a burning passion, she joins the group when Eymas is no longer there and that's good for both of them bc she almost kidnaps him at one point

Week 4 Reading Blog

This week I read pages 90-120 of Backlands: The Canudos Campaign. All throughout the chapters, Da Cunha talks about the political landscape. He talked about the people that made up the land that was fought upon and lived upon as well as giving historical context of each topic talked about. Like the previous chapters, he dives deeper into the topic of race, about the races that made up Brazil, how they got to where they got (at the time) and where they came from. After, he talked about Brazil’s cowboys and how they helped change the political landscape of Brazil starting with the Canudos Campaign.

The most important quote read this week was, “This unforgiving region was given a suggestive name by the Tupi, ‘pora pora eyma,’ a name that is still attached to one of the mountain ridges in the east…” Da Cunha writes about how the Tapuia seeked refuge from the Portuguese, Tupi and enslaved persons in the mountain ranges of the Borborema. Since they couldn’t overpower or fight back these forces, they did the best they could but ultimately, had to hide to preserve their numbers.

Nepenthes Eymae is the largest species on the Indonesian island of Sulawesi, within its genus the largest pitcher. which were re-discovered in the wild in 2020. endemic to Central Sulawesi growing in mossy forests above 1000m.

is he actually dying or just injured? how did that happen?

Oh no Eymas is dead, dead dead haha.

They attack the lab where he works and Angela and Necticula can't get there in time to save him, he dies in Angela's arms.

It creates a big split up between those two with Angela blaming Necticula and her blaming herself.
