I find it so fucking hilarious how roque preaches philosophy and he's painted as this loyal, benevolent guy who anyone could go to for advice because he's all zen and shit, he even goes as far as to defend victra when everyone starts questioning her loyalty:
Page 282 (Golden son):
“Now she is here, when we are little more than a ragtag coalition of bandits, and you question her. You disgust me. It makes me sad to be among you bickerers. So l if another man or woman questions her loyalty, I will lose faith in this fellowship. And I will leave.”
Only for it to turn out that she's the one who ends up sticking with Darrow afterward (you know) and roque ends up turning his back on him and worse. Talk about irony.
I swear, Roque pisses me off just by existing 😭😭

This parallel 🤌🏻
“I am Sera au Raa,” she says proudly. “Were you really a red? I heard my father speaking,” she explains.
“I still am a red,” I say. “It’s not something I stopped being.”
“Oh. You don’t look like one.”
She must not watch holos if she doesn’t know who I am. “Maybe it’s not about what I look like,” I suggest. “Maybe it’s about what I do.”
Minutes later…
“You whelp. I pity a world where you decide if a man like Lorn au Arcos lives or dies. Did your parents never teach you?”…”What is pride without honor? What is honor without truth? Honor is not what you say. It is not what you read.” Romulus thumps his chest. “Honor is what you do.”

That shout into the wind aka Golden Son thoughts
Holy FUCK
it got worse and better at the same time
SPOILERS UNDER THE CUT LETS GOooOOoOoooOo
Holy fuck
holy ACTUAL fuck
I was up listening to my audiobook until 6:30AM because I could NOT stop
Here my dumbass thought that the last hour would be CALMING. It would be able to SLOW DOWN from all the non stop action of the book.
Tumblr media
Ok ok ok lemme start with other thoughts first before the clusterfuck that was the end of this book.
Karnus au Bellona had one of my favorite quotes of the book. He and Darrow are speaking to each other (I also love that if you paid attention here, Karnus gives the hint about the assassination attempt that Octavia was planning to let happen here) at this party thing. Darrow asks why Karnus wants to kill him despite having everything and Karnus responds that Darrow has dishonored his family. Darrow's like "Pfff so it's pride? Pride is but a shout into the wind." And Karnus responds with, and let me get my papers. It reads as follows *stacks papers and reads*
"I will die. You will die. We will all die and the universe will carry on without care. All we have is that shout into the wind. How we live. How we go and how we stand before we fall. So you see...pride is the only thing."
And I'm sitting here squinting at my ceiling like DAMN bro that's a fucking LINE.
OH OH AND HOLY FUCK WHEN DARROW HUMILIATES CASSIUS!!!!
"AND I CLAIM THE SWORD ARM OF CASSIUS AU BELLONA."
Tumblr media
I was slightly confused because Darrow's training with Lorn was off screen so when Darrow was twirling with the Willow Way I was like WAIT WHAT??? But boiiii Cassius BUH BYEEEEE. I know that will be a problem later but...still. I'm happy to live in my bubble for at least the remainder as I type this before I start Book 3.
Roque. *folds hands on table*
I....get it, I suppose. Still don't like it, still disappointed. It's hard to blame Darrow even though he was warned to make amends. Mostly because Darrow has major trust issues and the more bad things that happen with betrayals (Tactus, Jackal, Roque. I'd say Pliny too but we never liked Pliny and he wasn't a friend, so.) it's only going to reinforce that.
Don't get me STARTED on Mustang. Like WOMAN. You're up Darrow's ass day and night 25/8 466 days a year to tell you about the truth and he does and you're like
Tumblr media
The one time I didn't like her. I was like BITCH STOP IT. JUST STOP IT. DARROW PLEASE TELL ME ABOUT YOUR DARKNESS SO I CAN ACCEPT YOU FULLY. OH WAIT NO NOT THAT DARKNESS NOOOOOO DARROW HOW COULD YOU
like pls stop
I kinda want him to be with Victra. I love her. I actually shouted when during the battle her mother turned the ship around and switched sides and Victra's ship released the Telemanus war party into the Bellona fleet. I was like HOLY FUCK VICTRA IS MY ACTUAL QUEEN. SHE IS IN FACT THE MAIN CHARACTER. I just love her and wish she was Darrow's wife in arms. Those two would be BAD.
Tactus. Sigh. Poor guy but fuck him. GENUINELY poor Tactus but also genuinely fuck Tactus.
SEVRO AND DARROW'S SCENE WHEN THE BURDON LIFTS OFF HIS SHOULDERS THAT SEVRO KNOWS AND STILL IS THERE TO HELP HIM
phhewwwww I almost cried. ALMOST.
And now we come to my baby child. My sweet sunshine. The light of my life. Ragnar. Our sweet baby boi Obsidian. Our Stained.
Tumblr media
So many amazing moments with him. Truly. His actual fear when Darrow sits with him in that freezer and tells him he is free. And Ragnar is like "?????? YOU SHAME ME ??????" That like he really sees freedom from a Gold's service as a shame upon him because of how the Obsidians have been used in history. Which by the way, is disgusting. I have a huge love for Obsidians because of their past and how they were culled and used and taught to see the Golds as gods. And here comes Darrow trottin' up like "yo so uh, we're all the same, i was born in the dirt and oh I'm a Red and uhhh you're free and uhhh choose your own destiny. ok bye!"
And Ragnar is like
Tumblr media
When he gives Ragnar the Razor? Don't touch me. Him somehow slinking around UNHEARD and being Darrow's bodyguard? I live. Him threatening Mustang from the darkness, saying that Reaper is too important to the people to be killed, that he lives for his sisters and his brother and his two fathers and his mother and that Mustang has 10 breathes before he ends her life?
ICONIC.
I hope he lives a long, prosperous and beautiful life.
"Tell all who will hear; The Reaper sails to Mars. And he calls for an Iron Rain." GOOOOOOSSSIIEESSSSS. I had GOOSEBUMPS BITCH
Tumblr media
Ok. Let me calm down. *wipes a single tear away with thumb*
It's the end, I said. The war is OVER, I said. It was fought, I said. Darrow will be adopted and will be a step closer to the top and he-
Wait, please don't say that Pierce Brown. Please don't tell me the dude who just gave Lorn a drink has "a familiar walk". WHO IS THAT. WHO IS IT. NO N ON O WHO IS THAT TELL MEEEE
And then the fan was hit by literal shit. The shit didn't hit the fan, the fan was hit by shit.
Roque? Betrayal. Jackal? Betrayal (wasn't shocked, but how long a game Jackal played to get Darrow was commendable because his "long concealed hate filled smile" he gave Darrow I was like DAMN bro he got us). Nero? Shot in the fucking face. Lorn? Stabbed and head cut off. Ares? Decapitated in a box. Darrow? Paralyzed, traumatized and taken. Great. Just great. Fabulous. Stupendous. Ideal. Warranted. Understandable. Un-traumatizing. Calming, in fact.
aRE yOU FUCKinG KIDDING Me?!?!??!?!?!?!?!?!??!?!?!?!??!!?!?!?!?!?!!??!?!!??!?!?!?!?
HOW AM I SUPPOSED TO GO TO SLEEP LIKE NOTHING HAPPENED AFTER THAT MY HEART RATEkar IS AT 120, BITCH
MY FIGHT OR FLIGHT IS ACTIVATED
MY AMYGDALA IS FIRING AT THE SPEED OF SOUND
Tumblr media
I'm scared to read Book 3. I'm frightened. I lost 14 days off my life from the last hour of this book. Is it even worth the torment? Is it worth the pain? Probably.
Just....let me be dramatic for a few hours.
Then I'll pop in Book 3 and probably cry harder
I SWEAR TO FUCKING GOD IF THEY TOUCH RAGNAR I WILL BE DEVASTATED
Then again knowing this book series he's going to die for sure
I'm scared

I will always consider both Harmony and Roque to be rats, and though I hate Harmony far more overall, I find Roque’s betrayal to be worse.
Harmony ratted on Darrow, Fitchner/Ares and the Rising in a moment of rage and desperation. She felt (un-rightfully) justified in what she perceived as revenge against “golds” (Darrow, Fitchner, and others). She also traded information in exchange for freedom and survival, which is a “decent” reason for ratting. Even though nothing she does in this instance is even remotely right, she still has reasons for doing what she did. She was up against a wall, being tortured with no way out, and she felt like Darrow and Ares had betrayed the cause (even though they had not). I could never justify her actions because they were atrocious and she’s a piece of shit, but she did have reasons for doing horrible things in the heat of the moment when it was her life or someone else’s, and there was no clear way out. Her betrayal in this instance is infuriating because if she hated Ares for being gold she didn’t have to rat on Darrow too. Everyone wanted to know who Ares was. No one was looking for Darrow. Regardless, she was desperate. She was surviving. She was alone. She is utterly horrible and did not think it through. This was not a long term thought-out plan on Harmony’s part.
But Roque? Roque’s betrayal was cold-blooded. It was calculated. His life was not in jeopardy. He did not do it out of desperation, revenge, rage, or need for survival. He did it because he could. He thought it out. He had time to sit on it and decide what to do. He was not backed into a corner. He could have warned Darrow. Instead, he was an active participant in a scheme against Darrow. What Roque did, he did on purpose with intent and precision. He was not overwhelmed, manhandled or blackmailed into participating in a coup against his will or better jugement. He was scheming. He was a key participant in a planned out coup, that involved being right in the centre of the betrayal. Cassius killed Fitchner because he was a threat, but I seriously doubt he did so out of malice and it is highly unlikely he killed Fitcher via decapitation (if they fought). Which means that Fitchner’s head was removed after he died. It means that Roque saw them put Fitchner’s head in a box, and carried it over to Darrow without so much as shaking. He wasn’t even supposed to “crown” Darrow that day during the ceremony. He most likely volunteered to paralyze Darrow and present Ares’ head to him. Even though he logically knows it was Aja and the Jackal that killed Quinn, he still sided with them over Darrow. He chose to pin Quinn’s death on Darrow. He decided Darrow was more at fault because of his colour. That’s cold. That’s vicious. That’s shameless. He had a thought-out plan that he executed with intent and extreme lack of remorse.
Harmony betrayed Darrow and Ares in a hot-blooded attempt at “revenge”.
Roque betrayed Darrow in cold-blood, because he believed in racial supremacy.
Tumblr media
Since Roque loves poetry so much, I’ve decided to end this post with a little interlude on rats. 💗💗

The Mark of Wolves - Red Rising fic
Synopsis
All my people sing of are memories. And so I will remember this death. It will burden me as it does not burden my fellow students—I must not let that change. I must not become like them. I’ll remember that every sin, every death, every sacrifice, is for freedom.
But Darrow forgets. He forgets everything. Red, Gold, the mines, the Sons of Ares, his mission, his family, his purpose, his dreams, his past. Eo. So what does Darrow become?
Drabble I: Darrow
He tells me his name is Cassius. Cassius au Bellona.
“Cassius,” I repeat, hoping that at least the taste of his name would bring me some familiarity. It doesn’t.
“Do you remember me?”
I study him—his golden curls, his shining eyes, the cleft in his chin. He’s a boy on the cusp of adulthood, a young man of infinite beauty. He’s not someone you can easily forget. And yet, the sight of him sparks nothing. “Should I?”
He flinches. I didn’t mean to hurt him. You shouldn’t hurt young, beautiful things. He waves away my hesitant apology and calls me Darrow. Darrow au Andromedus. It leaves me indifferent.
I sit cross-legged with my back against the wall. Cassius mirrors my position across from me, and next to him is a slight long-haired boy who’s kept silent until now. He leans forward. “I’m Roque au Fabii,” he says and when that, too, gets nothing from my side, he asks, “What about your family? Your parents? Your home?”
I frown in concentration.
Cassius perks up. “You’re from Yorkton. Your mother’s name was Lexus, I believe.”
I shrug.
"And your father... Your father's name, I mean..." Trailing off, he turns to Roque for help, but all Roque does is shake his head. It’s clear none here knows me all that well.
Roque sighs, “It seems you’ve lost your memories.”
I feel lost.
I woke up surrounded by forgotten faces and with no idea who I am or who I’m supposed to be. Questions tumble through my brain, the next one louder than the one before.
They try to explain the situation succinctly.
It’s our third day at the Institute on Mars,
So, I’m trapped in the savage wilderness, where society has been reduced to young Golds giving in to their primal instincts, and I don't even know what Gold is supposed to mean.
“I do wonder sometimes,” Roque begins after Cassius has recovered, “as to the purpose of all this. How can this be the most efficient method of testing our merit, of making us into beings who can rule the Society?”
“And do you ever come to a conclusion?” Cassius asks.
“They have us here because this valley was humanity before Gold ruled. Fractured. Disunited even in our very own tribe. They want us to go through the process that our forefathers went through. Step by step, this game will evolve to teach us new lessons. Hierarchies within the game will develop. We’ll have Reds, Golds, Coppers.”
“Pinks?” Cassius asks hopefully.
“I … don’t know about Pinks,” Roque says. The idea of a Gold being a Pink offends him. I don’t know enough to form an opinion. “But … the rest is simple. This is a microcosm of the Solar System.”
Roque notices my blank look. “Darrow… do you know what the Society is? The colors?”
I shake my head. “What’s a Pink?”
Roque snorts.
Cassius buries his face in his hands.
Roque is finishing his summary of  the Red class when he’s interrupted by two pairs of voices and pounding feet. The girls have returned.
“Has he woken up?” is the first question the shorter girl asks as she steps through the doorway.
The lean, long-limbed girl that follows closely behind her, whistles. “Wow, that looks gorydamn nasty!”
She means the wound on the side of my head—a horizontal, freshly stitched and swollen scar. Nine stitches. Cassius is in the middle of cleaning it with salt water.
I stare at them, suddenly conscious of the fact that I’m wearing nothing but my underwear under the light blanket. Cassius said they’d washed them and hung them to dry in the sun outside.
"What?" asks the lean girl.
"What?" I say.
"What?" she repeats.
Cassius lifts his eyes to heaven. "Great ancestors, spare me."
"He doesn't remember you, Quinn. Or anyone, for that matter." Roque clears his throat. “We believe he suffers from amnesia.”
“Believe?” Cassius gives a harsh laugh. “He doesn’t recall his mother from Jove. It’s a fact, my goodman.”
Quinn gapes. "Nothing?"
"Not a gorydamn truth," Cassius says. I admire how his hands stay steady and gentle despite his heated tone. "We just had to explain to him what the Society is."
Quinn gapes some more.
The short-haired girl brings me a cup of water. “Little sips,” she advises, smiling kindly. She introduces herself as Lea.
“We were deciding who was right to lead us. The discussion quickly devolved into . Titus waited until we had our backs turned.” He nearly growls. “The coward.”
“What happened exactly,” I ask him, “Cassius?” But he remains tight-lipped, the anger obvious in the way he works his jaw. He finishes putting the bandages in place, squeezes the back of my neck and leaves the room.
We stare after him.
“Did I do something?”
Lea shakes her head. “You should eat your berries, Darrow. You need the energy.”
After some hesitation, I fall upon them. I didn’t realize how hungry I was.
Quinn takes over. “We were leaving. Titus grabbed the standard and attacked. Caught you—” she points at my temple, the wet spot underneath the bandages, “Right there.”
“I saw it all happen. Titus was aiming for Cassius,” sweet-featured Lea adds, “You saved him, Darrow. You pushed him out of the way, left yourself open. That’s how Titus got you.” She shivers. “Your blood splattered all over us. It was everywhere. We thought you’d died.”
“It was chaos,” Quinn agrees, her gaze faraway. “We fought like hell. Cassius threw himself at Titus with a roar. I grabbed a chair and started swinging at anyone who came close. Got Vixu-something in the chest. He was down for the count after that. Lea did the maddest thing. She hit and bit Titus’s hand until he dropped the banner.” She laughs when Lea blushes. “By then, you’d recovered enough for us to retreat. Roque knew a shortcut through the empty stables. Cassius’d left Titus’s face a gory mess and we covered our retreat.”
“I can’t believe I forgot the standard,” Lea groans, hiding her face in her hands.
“At least you remembered to grab us some grub instead. I carried that chair out of the gorydamn castle!”
They devolve into giggles.
Roque finishes quietly. “You passed out after a mile. Cassius carried you the rest of the way here. You were unconscious for twenty-seven hours. The rest is history.”
It’s strange how that sentence is true, especially for me. My history boils down to the past hours spent in their company. Anything before that is an empty void.
Cassius walks back in and throws a pile of damp black and gold fatigues on my lap. He seems in an even worse mood than before, although none of his ire is directed at us. “Darrow, get ready, my goodman. Proctor Mars wants a word with you.”
