Things my next bookbinding project has taught me: regular-ass office paper has dye lots apparently?? Ran out of paper during printing, opened a new pack, and now I have three signatures that are a totally different shade of white.

Note to Self: maybe, instead of prepping a crap ton of bracelets with crimp closures and not having any for the other side when the bracelets are finished, you can set aside a second crimp so that you can actually finish bracelets and have a sense of accomplishment

Pst! You know what time it is? New cosplay time! I decided to remake one of if not my favorite cosplays in my collection, Naven Nuknuk from Epithet Erased
Tumblr media Tumblr media
This has been by far my most time consuming build (as well as expensive). this cosplay took a total of 279 hours over the span of roughly 8 months to make. That time doesn't include redoing sections or details that didn't make it into the final look.
And now for a detailed look at this whole outfit because dang, I put so many tiny details in.
Starting off with the earring and beads, I used a tequnic called lampwork to make them. The best way I can explain lampworking is like miniature glassblowing
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Lampwork uses glass rods heated in a flame to create generally small pieces like beads or buttons. Lampworking can be incredibly detailed. While I'm still fairly beginner at all of this I was able to learn a tequnic called implosion to make the flowers look more 3 dimensional. I also used lampworking to make the buttons on the undershirt!
I did all the 3d modeling for parts like the glasses and the belt buckle. (Stealing pictures from my Instagram because the progress tracker i use corrupted my images)
Tumblr media Tumblr media
While I don't usually focus on the 3d modeling in my builds it's a huge passion of mine. After making a model of the belt buckle I put my 3d print into casting clay. After carefully removing it I poured tin in to make the final belt buckle.
Tumblr media
I also taught myself basic leather working and tooling to add some apple blossom inspired designs onto the belt and painted it.
Tumblr media
Next thing I think I should talk about is the embroidery. I wanted to incorporate more details about naven into his outfit. After asking jello some questions we came to the conclusion that the embroidery should be lillies and carnations. Because of my constant insanity I hand embroidered everything. I also did some embroidery on the pants and used an embroidery floss that changes colors in the sun for fun.
Tumblr media
Before I get any questions about materials I'll add in, the white shirt and embroidery are both silk. I struggle to embroider with cotton dye to the sound and feeling it makes, and I felt like being fancy so silk shirt too. The pants are a cotton twill (pretty much jean fabric without the indigo) and the green strips are silk. A perfect Segway into the tatting and knitting!
For those who don't know tatting is a traditional form of lace making found in many different places around the world. There are 2 main forms of tatting, needle tatting and shuttle tatting, I tend to use shuttle tatting due to how nice and portable it is. I thought tatting would be fitting to add to navens outfit due to it's other name, farmers lace.
Tumblr media
And now for the big beast of this outfit, the knitting. Like with everything else in this outfit I dyed the yarn myself. It's 80 percent wool to 20 percent silk blend.
Huge thanks to jello for suggesting so many ideas, this outfit wouldn't be nearly as cool as it is otherwise.
Anyways I hope all y'all like the outfit! I had so much fun making this insanity

> 𝗺𝗮𝘀𝘁𝗲𝗿𝗹𝗶𝘀𝘁 <
-
Changbin was naturally curious. Whether it be about his cousin's current class, what his bandmate ate for yesterday’s dinner or the weather of a country on the opposite side of the globe. He was curious about anything and everything. So, naturally, after dating Y/N for about two months, he would get curious about the lime bracelet that wrapped itself around his boyfriend’s hand. The said trinket was held together by a single thread of yarn, decorated with miniature glass beads and a tiny, fluffy frog in the middle. If he was being honest with himself, it did not look aesthetically pleasing. In fact, it wasn't. The beads were uneven and scuffed up, the color choice was horrible and overall it just looked like it hadn’t been washed in a while. He was afraid to call his partner out on this, being the shy bear he was, but after seven weeks with his boyfriend, both his curiosity and hygiene-oholic self got the better of him.
“You know,” Changbin mumbled in a sing-song tone, staring at the unattractive accessory, “you never told me about that…” he pauses, rethinks his words and continues again as his boyfriend locks eyes with him, “bracelet around your wrist.” Y/N freezes, resulting in both of them halting, and with them, their stroll at the park.
“You okay?” Changbin asks, half confused, half worried, “I’m talking about the—”
“Yeah, I know what you’re talking about.” Y/N cuts him off, lips quivering as he tightens his grip on the paper bags he holds, almost ripping the fragile sheets, “Let’s just drop these off at Nicky’s first.” Nicky’s is the name of the local bread shop they deliver to and for. In fact, both men had met each other there as delivery boys. To the owner’s surprise, both hit it off pretty well. Too well to the point that they started dating.
The walk out of the park and into the autumn street was quiet, way quieter than it was supposed to be. The street was bustling, there were cars honking their horns and bicycles ringing their bells, but it was all ear-splitting silence with Y/N. After dating him for seven weeks, and knowing him for even more, he was sure his boyfriend was always bubbly and upbeat. But in this moment, something about his actions, or the lack thereof, said the exact opposite. And to be really honest, it made Changbin uneasy. He knew what he said had upset his partner. He wanted to apologize but was too afraid—to sound dumb and repetitive or to hurt his feelings even more. Which of the two was it? That he was unsure of.
“Good morning Mrs. Park!” Changbin greets, showing his dimples off as both boys enter the shop.
“Good morning!” Mrs. Park chirps back, raising her head towards both men, retracting the knife from the loaf she held. “Oh! Those must be the bread I ordered! Thank you for getting them, you know me, too old to walk all the way to the supplier. Too old to remember to do so too.” She laughs, putting the bread knife flat on the wooden cutting board as she shifts her gaze from Changbin to Y/N. “Oh! You can put that in the back.” Y/N nods as he drags his feet towards the back of the shop, slowly disappearing into its retro-ness.
The store’s aroma was always the same, the smell of lavender and the chilly air slapping them in the face whenever they went in. But Y/N’s aura wasn't. And Mrs. Park could tell.
“What’s up with him?” She asked, raising a brow, not really expecting the answer she would get.
“I asked him about that lime bracelet he has on all the time.” Changbin replies, sighing, “It’s… kinda dirty don't you think?”
“Oh.” is all she replies. She stays silent for an uncomfortable amount of time until Changbin realizes.
“I… didn’t do anything wrong, right?” He says, hoping for the best, “What is it any—”
“I think it would be better if you ask him yourself.”
“Well…” Changbin doubles back, “if it’s anything uncomfortable for him to share, then I won’t bug about it anymore. I don’t want to sacrifice his feelings for my curiosity.” He replies, unsure of what to think.
Mrs. Park nods and as if on queue, Y/N reappears and steps out the pantry, paper bags that were previously held by his hands gone. He smiles at the lady in her 40’s and heads straight to the door, leaving the scent of lavender and bread behind. Changbin follows suit, looking at Mrs. Park as she nods back, sending him a reassuring smile.
Changbin steps out into the breezy autumn eventide, hues of marigold and tangerine painting the afternoon skies like a canvas. Y/N trudged and crossed the street, entering back into the park, the aura much different from before. What was bright and warm this afternoon became darker and colder as the moon began its daily process: replacing the sun. What was once a yellow orb glowing high up in the sky was now just a small orange blob on the horizon, and on the opposite side of the colored canvas, a glimmering white crescent, slowly rising through the blue hues. Changbin found the indigo, azure, tangerine and marigold ombré charming, a sight he would never forget. Y/N spotted a nearby bench and sat down, his boyfriend taking the empty space beside him. They sat there for a while, staring at the moms telling their children to get off the swings so they can go home, and the hotdog vendor packing up and calling it a day. In a way, both the swings and the hotdogs reminded him of someone… special.
“I—” Y/N pauses, trying to rephrase his words once again, “I haven’t really told you about this,” he says, brushing his fingers ever so slightly over the lime fabric on his wrist, “gift.”
Changbin is confused, visually confused at that, but keeps quiet and lets him continue. “A friend of mine… gave this to me.” Y/N says, looking up towards the darkening skies, holding a tear back, “At first I thought it sucked, you know, the beads don’t look that nice. I didn’t see its value.” He said, face scrunching as he tries his hardest not to let a tear out. “So I didn’t wear it.” Changbin nods, unsure of what to say.
“He passed away a month later.” He fails to keep the cap on his bottled feelings on, a tear or two slipping out, “I found him in the bathtub, blood everywhere, and his face… oh his face,” Changbin wraps him in warmth, “it looked lifeless and yet so… sorrowful.” He says, clenching the left side of his shirt, more tears dripping down the side of his face, only to be dried up by the fabric of his boyfriend’s shirt, “I didn’t know that was possible.”
Changbin hugged and patted his back for a while until he calmed down, until he could finally form a proper sentence. “He helped me figure out and accept who I am.” Y/N says, the left side of his lip pulling up as his face forms a melancholic smile, “I didn’t realize it back then, but I wouldn’t have been so open with my sexuality now if it wasn’t for him.” Both stared up at the young night sky, the elegant stars beginning to show themselves. “I’ve worn this,” he says, fiddling with the dirty cotton frog in the center of the trinket, “since the day we buried him.”
Y/N lets a tear fall once again as he leans his head on Changbin’s shoulder, finding the closure he thought he’d already found months ago. “I loved him. Still do. I just wish he would've told me about his problems. Just wish he would’ve stuck around for a little longer.” Changbin nods once again, still unsure of what to say.
“But that was all in the past. There’s nothing I can do about it now.” Y/N says, ripping his eyes away from the lime bracelet, staring up at the midnight blue sky, the bijou stars twinkling in the distance, “Nothing but remember him with this ugly ass ornament.” Changbin looks into his eyes, confused.
“This ugly ass ornament that means the world to me.”
End.

Sariah’s accessories + lunch box
Tumblr media
Having Courtney Moore’s collection around makes it so easy to come up with things to make for my own 80′s character, Sariah. I’ve been looking at a lot of the stuff offered for her and trying to recreate it for my girl using things I’ve got on hand already.
Sariah attends a private girls’ school that requires her to wear a uniform, but the last Friday of each month is casual Friday. So for that occasion today, Sariah is wearing a Courtney-inspired outfit and accessories.
Tumblr media
I based this outfit off of Courtney’s shirt and tie and her purple suspenders skirt, which when worn together looks adorable. Her shirt is from Our Generation, but I made the tie, the skirt, and the suspenders. This bubble skirt was a very easy sew, with only a few seams. Instead of a bottom hem, the fabric is folded into a tube and stitched at each end. Her suspenders are elastic ribbon; I haven’t figured out yet how I want to secure them to the skirt, so they’re just pinned right now. Her socks, shoes, glasses, watch, and earrings are American Girl brand.
I also based her accessories on Courtney’s.
Tumblr media
I didn’t make the “Maureen for Mayor” pin since that’s only relevant to Courtney’s story, and not my doll’s.
Tumblr media
On her right arm she wears jelly bracelets, which were trendy in the 80′s. Courtney’s accessories set has plastic bangles, but I wanted to try making jelly bracelets from hot glue. So this is very much a prototype. What I did was trace a single line of glue onto a piece of parchment, let it cool, and then glued the ends together into a circle that I then painted and varnished. I’m not sure that I love the irregular edges, and they aren’t stretchy enough to be smaller. So I’ll probably try this again with another material.
Tumblr media
Around her neck she has her Lip Smackers peach lip balm. The container is a rolled up piece of paper; I designed the label and then printed it out and rolled it around a small candle. Then I filled the other end with hot glue and pressed the ends of a piece of yarn into it.
Tumblr media
And of course, she has a Walkman! I made this from a small plastic hinged container. I designed the graphic that goes on the top, based on pictures of the original Walkman, and glued it to the container. The buttons are painted pony beads and the headphone cords are attached through a cylindrical glass bead that I painted. Right now it doesn’t secure to her clothes, since I’m still trying to figure out what to use to fasten it.
Tumblr media
The box opens and has a cassette tape inside. I used an image search to find a photo of a cassette and added the words “Sariah’s mix April 1984″ on the front. The picture is glued onto a piece of foam board and laminated with clear packing tape.
Tumblr media
The headphones are My Life As brand, and the cords are from a defunct small appliance.
Tumblr media
She also brings her lunchbox to school! This is also based on Courtney’s PAC-MAN lunchbox set.
Tumblr media
Character lunch boxes were extremely popular in the 80′s, and I’m assuming are probably still around today. Sariah’s has a picture of Rainbow Brite, a cartoon she would have watched in 1984.
Tumblr media
The lunch box is made from a carton of egg whites that I washed and cut apart. It hinges with a piece of clear packing tape and opens up. The thermos and the lid are made from a rolled piece of paper printed with Rainbow Brite and her friends on it. I laminated it with tape to give it a plastic look. The lunchbox handle is a bent piece of zip tie.
Tumblr media
Sariah is an athlete so she prefers healthy lunches. She packs extra snacks on days when she has gymnastics or soccer practice. She’s got a peanut butter and jelly sandwich, sliced green apples, cherry tomatoes, baby carrots, string cheese, and two Girl Scout cookies. I made the apples and the sandwich from painted foam board. Everything else is clay. The plastic bags were cut from a real sandwich bag and the cut edges were sealed with clear tape.
Tumblr media
Here’s what they look like out of the bags, and with my hand for scale.
After this, I’ll be working on recreating Courtney’s sleepover accessories and school supplies!

What is an Abaya?
An abaya is a garment worn by women around the globe. It’s long-sleeved, black in style, floor-long. When a lady goes out of her home, the abaya is worn over street garments and is designed to be free and flowing, hiding the body’s “curves. The abaya may slip over the chest, but will usually open at the front, close with snaps, zipper, or layers that overlap. The sleeves are made of the same fabric; they are not stitched on individually. The abaya can be worn with other clothes, like a scarf covering the hair.
Beyond has the modest collection of premium and trending abayas and kaftans
The majority of ladies love to put on modest abaya attire regularly, as garments are especially suitable for the region’s high temperatures, dusty local weather, and religious beliefs.
There’s a reason why women in the Gulf are among the world’s best-dressed. I have an outstanding sense of dress with a well-developed knowledge of careful cutting, fine fabrics, and exquisite embellishment. It is a long flowing black gown with elegant designs that can be flat or decorated.
Modern women who practice modest fashion often try the latest style of fancy abaya designs to make them look fashionable and elegant in everyday life. Muslim women especially, love to wear abayas in various colors, designs, and patterns that are highly sophisticated and elegant. Gone are the days when abaya meant only a dark black piece of a cloak like a garment, contemporary women know how to wear stylish abayas in a modern fashion keeping in view the modest values
Are you interested in the story of Beyond? How it became of the top brands in UAE? Then you must read the article
Now a day’s abayas are created with the traditional theme but in the latest and sophisticated styles and cuts to create an edgy look. The flares and flowing fabric and the elegant cutting and sewing style make abayas above any other style and that’s what modern women must have.
Abayas appear simple and straightforward at first glance, a variety of designs actually exist. Modern abayas are simple and unadorned, but finding them with sticks, painted decorations, and custom cutting has become more common in recent years. The ornamentation is often located along with the cuffs, necklines, front or back of the jacket. To add flourish and glitter, beads, sequins, painted yarn, ribbon, crystals, lace, etc. Design houses have even made haute couture abayas, and local designers and Gulf countries have quite a following among young women.
Black is still the traditional and most common base color, but abayas can also be found in other colors such as dark blue, brown, green, and purple.
Although modesty is the goal, women still enjoy accentuating their visible features through makeup, traditionally Kohl used on the eyes like eyeliner. Another way of embellishing their look is through henna, a temporary tattoo typically applied to a woman’s hands. Henna is made from dried leaves, and the designs made with it are beautiful.
Beyond was also featured in Khaleej Times
Women also wear a headscarf called the Shela, to cover their hair. This is normally black and made of very light material. Many women opt for designer scarves, which can even be matched to their handbags. For more traditional women, the Vishwa is an option. This black veil covers the entire face; it is thin enough to see out of, although nobody can see their faces. A third option is the Burqa, which only shows the eyes. Together these women’s garments are known as the Hijab, which essentially means head covering.
Women love their jewelry, making this an essential part of their dress. In the past, women carried all their savings in the form of jewelry, in the absence of banks. Women wear everything, including gold and silver bracelets, earrings, rings, anklets and more.
If you want to shop abaya you can explore the collections of Beyond which provides premium Abya.

O great & wise dad, do you have any tips on organizing crafting supplies? I'm dealing with about 4+ generations of inherited stuff, everything from embroidery floss to glitter to yarn to seed beads to lace, plus an antique loom & spinning wheel. Plz....help. It's awesome but also v overwhelming, esp cuz there's lots of 'I respect the resourcefulness & also growing up during the Depression style Trauma of it, but jfc do we need this much metallic trim clearly salvaged from old Christmas decor?'
OK first of all dealing with all that must be an ordeal but also i want your life. Holy shit.
So first thing: Containers. Itty bitty containers for beads, bigger containers for other things. Put containers in containers! Bag stuff up by category and chuck em in a box! Some stuff u might wanna buy containers for but household waste should cover u for most of it. I use a LOT of jars (spice jars are great for beads and glitter). I did buy an IKEA Skallax unit and some boxes to fit for some other things that won’t go in jars so well, like fabrics and paints etc.
Second thing: Pinterest. Pinterest is a blight BUT theres some good ideas for storage there. Like I saw one person using the IKEA plastic bag holder for putting rolls of wrapping paper in cus it’s got holes in that work perfectly. Wine bottle holders for yarn. All sorts. It’s great.
Third thing: Use your craft stuff to organise your crafts! Perhaps you can use up some yarn or fabrics to make some containers for other things? I used up all my plarn making a basket for onions.
Fourth thing: Vertical storage. When u got a LOT of stuff, u need all the space u can get. Shelves are your friend. (or even stackable boxes)
Fifth thing: Do not try and do it all in one go. Pick one thing, organise it, go have a cup of tea.
Sixth thing: If there is stuff you *want* to get rid of but you’re struggling to let go of it, give it to another crafter. That way you know it will get some love.
As for the BIG stuff, I think if you get everything else organised then I think those will be easier to find a place for.

do you embroider as well as knit? if so do you have any channel recs or tips or anyyything that would help a beginner? thank you
i do!! there are a lot of different types of embroidery but i'll focus on the traditional sewing-type done with a fine needle and thread/floss. i taught myself when i was in high school with youtube videos and pinterest tutorials fjdjdjd
for youtube channels i would recommend handiworks, diy stitching, and bluprint (they've got a channel but they're also a website like skillshare that's for fibre crafts mainly and they're an excellent resource if u have the money to spare)
there are also written tutorials with pictures by sublime stitching and this sampler tutorial. there are also a lot of good books out there that u can find as ebooks or epubs somewhere, like hoop dreams by cristin morgan and embroidery: a step by step guide by dk, those have been really helpful for me. u can also check your local library if you have access, every single library i've ever been in had several older books about learning embroidery that are still applicable to this day because the techniques haven't changed. i like owning/using books in the crafts i study especially physical, i love the tactile aspect of it alongside the inherent physicality in fibercraft.
as for tips i would say to practice basic hand-stitching with a simple backstitch (like in sewing clothes) for a bit to get used to the dexterity and train yourself to be able to keep stitches even and control the stitch length, it'll be a lot easier learning more complex stitches and managing colour and texture and everything if you've already got a good feel for using a needle with thread and a piece of fabric.
i'd also recommend practicing with stitch samplers, just draw out some basic designs or follow tutorials/patterns and stitch them with as many stitches as you can think of, explore the textures and differences in visual effect, try to do straight lines and smooth curves in different stitches, practice with colours, split the floss into their individual threads and do the same stitch with 1 thread, 2, 3, 4, 5, all 6 to see the differences.
you can use any fabric to embroider but it's easier to learn on woven cotton or linen-type fabrics and cross-stitch fabric that u can buy at the craft store. that way you can more easily gauge the sizes of your stitches and the grain of the fabric and use it like a grid
hope that helps!! you can also look into punch needle embroidery, crewel embroidery, beading embroidery, and painting with yarn.

#marchmeetthemaker2020 Day 7 prompt - love to make No surprise here. I love, love to knit lace, intriguing, complex lace. Don't get me wrong - there is very little about Knitting that I dislike - but lace can enthrall me. The shapes and drapes of the patterns. The way the yarn choices influence the final effect of the patterns, and lately the way gradient yarns can be shaped to highlight everything else. @freiafibers shawl balls are my latest obsession. If I add beads? Who am I kidding? 😂 When I add beads, what will that do to the drape of the fabric? Do I want shimmer and movement or do I want bling 😍? Or do I want it all? If I work with undyed fibres how will I paint them for greatest effect? Which fibres take the dyes the best - I love mohair and silk blends the best for this technique - the dyes move beautifully through the fibre, bit not so fast that the obscure the shapes I am highlighting. Both silk and mohair take colours so vividly so the colours are clear and intense. Wool takes dyes so well that shapes blur too quickly,. The effect is different and I choose the stitch patterns according. Patterns done in wool are reminiscent of water colour paintings, softer with gentler lines of patterning. I knit lace for me. I find the pattern complexities soothing and completely engrossing. The options are endless and the results amazingly beautiful 😍 I write the lace patterns in the hopes that other crazy knitters will follow me down the rabbit hole and discover the most beautiful of all Knitting - lace. #meetthemaker #making #lacemaking #designdetails #designer #letissierdesigns #lacemaker #lacepainter #paintinglaceknitting #lacedesigner #laceknitter #knittinglace #laceknittersofinstagram (at Nanaimo, British Columbia) https://www.instagram.com/p/B9eh647plmg/?igshid=xt4kxv1tzaga

I've made a couple doll crafts and I would like to do more. Do you have any recs for materials? I'm already getting some foam core and a set of small paint brushes and such, I've got a couple kinds of glue and some photo paper, but idk is there any crafting material you find is good to have on hand?
Excellent question. There’s lots of stuff that’s great to keep on hand. I dug through my craft bureau made a full list of what I’ve got. Of course, don’t feel pressured to always have all of these things on hand. You should pick and choose based on what sorts of crafts you want to do.
Basic tools:
X-Acto knife, which is great for cutting foam core cleanly
emery board or rough sandpaper to sand the edges of foam core
hot glue gun and glue sticks
clay sculpting tools if you’ll be working with clay; here is a picture of what I mean. If you’re not ready to get a full set of tools, start with the one pictured third from left with the pointy blade and the scoopy blade.
scissors, one pair for paper and others only for fabric (cutting paper with fabric scissors will quickly dull them)
Mod Podge, which works well as a varnish and sealer for painted crafts; it comes in matte, glossy, and super glossy
markers or Sharpies, both fine-tipped and thicker
ruler for marking straight lines
hole punch
needle, thread, pins, and seam ripper if you’re planning to do any sewing
Materials:
craft foam, which is different from foam core. Craft foam comes in smaller, thin, flexible sheets of a soft spongy material. When it’s painted and varnished it looks like leather.
polymer clay (if you don’t want to make homemade clay)
acrylic paint in a variety of colors; I usually keep 10-15 colors on hand
metallic acrylic paint is great for a gold and silver look
puffy paint; you can just get white and then paint over it with acrylic colors
wooden dowels or bamboo skewers
toothpicks, which can also be a tool to apply paint very finely
wooden craft sticks, which look like popsicle sticks or tongue depressors but come in a variety of sizes from tiny to jumbo. Usually they come in packs of like 50-300.
scrapbook paper in different patterns and designs
assorted beads and cool rocks
floral wire
garden wire that’s covered in a soft rubbery material
yarn, jute strings, or kitchen twine
assorted ribbon and lace
food coloring, which you can mix with white glue and make transparent paint
Here’s also a list of things to hoard when you come across them, because they’re good to have around for various projects:
tissue paper, which you can use for paper mache projects
thin cardboard, like the kind used for cereal boxes
small glass jars
small glass and plastic bottles
small metal containers like what some spices are sold in
clear rigid plastic, the kind often used for packaging food, like the clear plastic lid you’d get when buying a cake from a bakery, or like when hotels give you clear plastic cups. It’s formally known as #6 plastic. I use that for a lot of different projects. You can even use it to make DIY Shrinky Dinks.
thin rigid aluminum, like what premade graham cracker pie crusts come with. You can cut it with scissors and glue it to foam core pieces and it looks like metal.
round cardboard containers like the ones that salt or oatmeal are sold in
plastic water or milk jugs to cut up for rigid plastic
I think that’s everything! I’m so glad to hear that you’re getting into doll crafts. It’s a lot of fun to make tiny things for tiny friends to hold in their teeny tiny hands.
