My fabric stash is, I say this with self-awareness, too big. However, I can't seem to smallen it, and it's been too bloody convenient over the years to have so many colors/patterns/types when I need to get some small project done in a hot hurry. I genuinely don't remember where all of it CAME from; some pieces I remember of course (I made a skirt out of that in 1991!) and others must have been gift from other people's stashes?
There has been one piece in the stash kind of on my mind for a while. It is a complicated blue and brown pattern (sounds yucky, but actually quite nice) and a silky knit fabric. It was a perfect rectangle, but not very big. Maybe half a yard of 44 inch stuff?
Anyhow. I got out a very simple shirt pattern for stretch fabrics for my daughter last summer, because she found a knit fabric she adored. I pondered the pattern a bit, measured the fabric, and realized that if I didn't add sleeves, and pieced the top of the shoulder a bit, it would j-u-s-t work.
In the end, as usual, I realized there were two small adjustments I could have done to make it even better, but I have a function shirt and the remaining scraps of that fabric are ridiculously tiny. That is - a success!
This morning I have to confront the Difficult Detail on my painting. Please send me good wishes for competence and skillful shadows!
I was heading out the door for my long run this morning when Daughter texted. She has three friends all having babies so she needs to get cracking and make some baby quilts. She is isolating at home with COVID. After some texting to and fro I wrapped up my bin of scrap squares, chucked in my revolving cutting mat, a ruler and rotary cutter and pressed Hubby into driving it over to her house while I headed out into the frosty morning for my long run. Cant wait to see what she makes from my bin of scraps.
The picture isn't great at showing everything, due to not having enough room, but lookit all my fabrics! I got 21.5m of fabric that came out to 12lb/5kg (and expensive AF shipping!).
The purple cat and teacup/pot print is not on the selvage, which is extremely frustrating as it's only about 20in/50cm in length, and I am toll. So some splicing or tiers will be done so as to have a skirt that goes past mid thigh.
Everything is lovely and a nice texture, I'm excited AF to start sewing...except that I still need to do patterns, as well as finish my first two pieces that I've already gathered everything for, before I start buying even moar trimmings and lace.
I was going through my fabric stash pulling things out to do some mending with and the remnant I unwrapped and and using for the first time right now is dated back to 2010.
I have this super cute flannel fabric that I bought online about a year ago. The plan was to make a jammie set and a pillow case with it. I took it out of my collection to prepare it for sewing but didn't get around to it that day so I set it on my To Do pile.
Which is how I found out that all the skeletons glow in the dark.
[ID] Multiple pictures of colourful fabrics folded up neatly in the shelves of a cabinet. The doors of the cabinet are open to show the fabric. There are close-up pictures of the folded fabric. You can see some of the patterns: leaves and florals and dots for example. At the bottom of the cabinet are a couple of light-coloured fabrics in white and creme, suitable for mori kei fashion. [/ID]
I don't have a single system to sort my fabric hoard, but a couple of systems that I make work for me as best I can. I don't have enough space to only employ one system. Pictured here is my newly resorted fabric cabinet. (The drawers don't hold fabric, only the cubbies.)
Spy the mori kei pile at the bottom? 🍃
A conversation with @trasno-personal inspired me to post this from my drafts now!
It is a cold winters evening so what better place to be than in my sewing room. I am using scraps to make some mug rugs. I have put the left overs in a bowl so I can make a couple more as time permits over the coming days.
