I see so many people starting to use Threads as a way to escape Twitter and yes, it's owned by Facebook's CEO and giving Facebook the monopoly of social media is bad but I think we should also talk about the fact that, you know, Threads isn't avalibe in the EU for privacy reasons????? That should be concerning to EVERYONE

I funking hate Facebook.
What the fuck is this shit? This can't be legal right?
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Maybe the "I don't give Facebook consent to do XYZ" status update folks had the right idea.
Under the GDPR anyone has the right to withdraw personal information or ask that it is destroyed. In most circumstances - and that should include Facebook. Like, this could very easily be brought up against Facebook if it presses on ahead with this anyway.
I've only just woken up but someone please tell me this is fightable.

Meta ordered to stop training its AI on Brazilian personal data
Following similar pushback in the EU, Meta now faces daily fines if it uses Brazilian Facebook and Instagram data for AI training.
Tumblr media
Brazil’s data protection authority (ANPD) has banned Meta from training its artificial intelligence models on Brazilian personal data, citing the “risks of serious damage and difficulty to users.” The decision follows an update to Meta’s privacy policy in May in which the social media giant granted itself permission to use public Facebook, Messenger, and Instagram data from Brazil — including posts, images, and captions — for AI training.
The decision follows a report published by Human Rights Watch last month which found that LAION-5B — one of the largest image-caption datasets used to train AI models — contains personal, identifiable photos of Brazilian children, placing them at risk of deepfakes and other exploitation.
As reported by The Associated Press, ANPD told the country’s official gazette that the policy carries “imminent risk of serious and irreparable or difficult-to-repair damage to the fundamental rights” of Brazilian users. The region is one of Meta’s largest markets, with 102 million Brazilian user accounts found on Facebook alone according to the ANPD. The notification published by the agency on Tuesday gives Meta five working days to comply with the order, or risk facing daily fines of 50,000 reais (around $8,808).

Soooo instagram gave me a pop up this morning that since now the EU made it illegal to harvest personal data to sell to third party without the explicit user's consent, one can either tell them they can harvest and sell your personal data or pay a subscription to use their apps.
Tumblr media
Like this is not even about ads, they are still allowed to show ads to users. They just can't harvest and sell personal data without consent anymore, and are throwing a fuss about it

the tumblr press page says 48% of users are Gen Z, so aged 12-27. and this website says 40% Gen Z and 30% Millennial although idk how trustworthy that is. either way those are unfortunately useless categories for purposes of figuring out who is rent-paying age versus who just started highschool

am begging fandom at large to adopt my niche but ultimately extremely correct take that giles would have been immediately tech literate had jenny lived. HE WAS HOLDING A PROGRAMMING BOOK WHEN HE TRIED TO ASK HER OUT. man was doing his HOMEWORK. he loves her so much & his reticence re: computers would have eroded just the same way he stayed at that monster truck rally. it would have been full of passive aggressive comments in places but he would still be taking notes on every single thing she has to say.

So I had a FUN LITTLE DISCOVERY about Facebook today!
So today I decided to go ahead and private as much as my Facebook as possible. Why? Because the less I have to interact with it, the better. Literally the only reason I don't delete it is because I use it to keep in contact with my D&D group who won't use Discord for some cursed reason and I do have some old memories on there with a couple of friends that are nostalgic. And while I was referring to an article which had some steps for how to do so, I came across this little gem:
Tumblr media
To which I said, "What do you mean OFF Facebook activity??? What OFF Facebook activity would FACEBOOK be tracking???" So I followed those steps and went in there and pulled up the list of information it had stored and LO and fucking behold! Apparently Facebook has been tracking a BUNCH of shit that I've been doing online EVEN though my Facebook is registered with my old-ass hotmail account and almost everything I do online is through my modern gmail. Also, I VERY INTENTIONALLY don't have FB installed on my phone, so it is VERY much separated from anything I do. And not just my searches, oh no no. It has been monitoring a WHOLE BUNCH of fun stuff including tracking my doordash orders, etsy orders and searches, shopping on zenintcg, the fact that we have insurance through Allstate, even my old fucking HINGE dating profile which I haven't even USED since like 2018 but apparently they've been getting updates on as recently as last year.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Seriously the ONLY thing Facebook should know about on this list is Grand Summoners, because it used to use FB to log in. NOTHING ELSE had anything to do with my hotmail, or FB. This is all information that FB obtained independently without my consent.
SO THAT'S FAN-TUCKING-FASTIC. I'm just... such a fan of that!
So for any of y'all who you know, DON'T want this corporation who is known for mishandling and selling user information to have information that it obtained about you without your consent outside of its platform, I suggest you follow those steps above to disable that. Currently it takes you to a secondary page where you you will need to follow these additional steps to Disconnect from Future Activity:
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
So yeah maybe spread the word because this is sure news to me and BOY AM I PISSED. Like I expect this from Google. Google tracking my searches or whatever makes sense in a hell on earth capitalist society way. Amazon tracking what you search on Alexa (or say within the same room as Alexa), sure. But Facebook finding my information even though it's associated with a different email address and not through its platform? THAT is just insane and malicious to me. I feel like a tin hat lunatic that's like "the social media's secretly trackin' me and stealin' my information!" except this time they actually ARE.

According to Sada Social, there is an urgent need for an immediate investigation into Meta's leak of WhatsApp users' data to the Israeli military.
The group diligently observes the collective dissent voiced by numerous Meta employees, encompassing Facebook, Instagram, WhatsApp, Messenger, and Threads, regarding the Meta company's complicity in the genocidal war against the Gaza Strip, its endorsement of the Israeli occupation, and its fueling of the "Lavender" artificial intelligence system used by the Israeli military to kill Palestinian individuals within the Gaza enclave.

Ai is extra shitty when you realise ai is being trained by default on social media. Meaning. They are training ai with dead people's info. They can't consent or revoke consent because they are dead.

(Copied from my clock app post)
Tumblr media
As the screenshot says, Meta is datascraping. Everything on Instagram, your faces, private photos, art, EVERYTHING, is being used to train AI, and they took away the option to opt out. there's a form you can fill out to protest this, but you can't opt out. I'm trying to spread word across all platforms so more people can join the boycott!!!! the other solution would be deleting all your data from Instagram and other meta platforms. This is theft of intellectual property and an invasion of privacy.
If you think AI is currently harmless or is only being used to make our lives easier, you're only thinking at the base level. imagine what certain demographics will do when the AI is trained with children's faces. And other communities online are already getting taken over by AI. AI also greatly increases water consumption. For years, deepfakes and AI generated porn of people have been made without permission. Etc, etc. I need you all to critically think about this and the impact it may have on the entirety of the world instead of just brushing it off.
No AI!! If you support AI, don't interact with my page. Don't interact with AI until there's laws and legislation regulating it and protecting everyone.

Meta playing ball with data privacy regulators
Tumblr media
Facebook and Instagram this week emailed Brazilian users about their data collection policy for training AI models. This follows action by Brazil’s Data Protection Authority (ANPD) to suspend such collection without warning users first.
In early July, the ANPD ordered Meta, the parent company of both social media platforms, to suspend its policy of using Instagram and Facebook posts to train AI software.
The agency suspended the ban on August 30, giving Meta five business days to present an updated timeline for implementing a plan to comply with Brazilian legislation and modify the form used by non-users to exercise the right to object.
Meta has committed to informing users about using their data for AI training and updating their privacy policies to provide clearer details. Additionally, Meta has pledged not to use data from individuals under 18 for AI training until further notice.
