A story of failure // In 2013 I was working in the music business as a merchandise manager with Kendrick Lamar. I had been doing it for about a year and was still novice to the whole process. One day I found out that Kendrick was going on tour with Kanye West (at the time was my favorite artist) and in that moment I decided I had to go on this tour. Mind you I had never gone on tour or even had an idea how to settle shows, count in and everything that doing merchandise on the road entails but I convinced the team that I should go. Fast forward a few weeks the tour starts and I FAIL royally. First few shows were a nightmare of miscounts, logistical problems, poor merchandise placement, the list goes on lol. I kept getting the “you’re fucking up” call after each show and I felt like shit. I remember midway through the tour I was in my hotel room in NY and I just wanted to quite; I hated feeling terrible for failing, but then I realized after each show, the mess-ups weren’t as bad as the previous one. Unconsciously I had learned and corrected my mistakes, growing through the process. By the end of the tour I managed to make very few mistakes and after that went on a few more tours and became a great merchandise manager through failing. Where there is failure there is an opportunity to grow and that’s what this collection is about. Appreciating the process of growth. FAILING, LEARNING, GROWING. Had the opportunity to attend a leadership development meeting at West Point last week. What an incredible experience. The history, the program that cadets go through, the spirit of comradery is unlike anything you’ve ever seen. Key take away: you learn through failure. These cadets are kicked in the ass every day and they are stronger because of it. Moments of vulnerability are key in growing. We as HUMANS see vulnerability as weakness. To go more in depth, us as men of color have been taught that vulnerability could get you killed. Today was a day that I truly learned, what you don’t reveal can never be healed and I allowed myself to be vulnerable with real unfiltered truth with myself.
