•someone requested Graytear with a huge sprinkle of angst. I ended up writing this AU, but idk if its enough angst, so I am not posting it as a reply to the person, but posting it on its own!•

•AU where Ultear is in Tartaros and Gray has his devil slayer magic - but she’s how she was around her Lost Ages scene, with not knowing her own worth or self, or if she was good or evil. so there’s unrequited love, back and forth bickering, and the whole “You’re a devil slayer, im a devil, come kill me” kinda???•

After meeting and facing his father, Gray really shouldn’t be surprised anymore. He understands Sabertooth’s shock at meeting their old master and his daughter, he sees Juvia’s pain for defeating the necromancer who had used his father, but - nothing, none of it, could have prepared him for this. But, here she is, Ultear standing in front of him. She’s different, somehow, and yet still reminds him of that same person he’d met on Tenroujima - broken, alone, just her and the world. Like a shell of a person, who can’t figure out their own self or worth.

“Huh. I wonder what your mother would think of this?” He sighs, gesturing to her fingertips stained black, the horns atop her head, one broken and dripping a dark ink. “Really, now... you can come back home with us. Let’s go back to Fairy Tail, or Crime Sorcière.”

“Hah!” Ultear laughs, pulling a floating orb towards her, “Back home? Don’t you get it?! I can’t go back now!” She throws it towards him, but it smashes against his ice shield, the separate parts flying back to her to reform. “I can’t... I can’t go back now.” She laughs weaker, voice gone soft. There’s no fight in her. No will, no want - no purpose. She stands here, empty, and still pushes herself to fight. For what? There’s nothing left, and she’d clearly left her guild for this.

“You still can. We don’t have to fight. I’ll bring you home to Jellal and Meredy, okay?” Gray knows he’s asking too much. He knows she won’t listen, or that she won’t even hear him. Still, his hope refuses to waver - not now, not ever. He’d always hope that she could recover from her past, that she could finally smile with friends, or even just stand by his side. He cared for her, after all. Maybe even loved her. And now, it all seems too late. Nothing could reach her, now.

“I told you.” She sighs, expression oddly blank. “There’s no use. I was ready to end someone’s life with these hands. I’m really still a witch who doesn’t think twice about murdering someone... something like that, I can’t come back from.” Something in the air shifts, and Gray watches in awe as her black-tipped fingers freeze over with frost, the ice spreading to the burnt trees around them, to the ground - frozen paths, all leading towards Gray. Underneath him, the ground grows, and he quickly dodges as where he once stood explodes, vines and flowers made of ice erupting.

“No, no, you can. You can come back.” Gray shouts, dodging the ice vines being thrown towards him. He jumps away from frozen flowers, and still, still, never attacks back. He knows she won’t stop, he knows she won’t give up. “Please. There’s people who care about you, who don’t want this for you.”

“Don’t you get it?” Ultear growls, summoning blocks of ice that bloom out towards Gray, trying to hit him. “I don’t deserve to live! You’re a devil slayer, aren’t you? Here I am, a devil, right in front of you! Fight back!”

She keeps attacking, never acknowledging the people around her, the ones who were there. Jellal, Meredy, Gray - they’re really frozen away in her memories, so she sees nothing else but the darkness. There’s no time to grieve. Ice vines keep growing around him, covered in purple thorns. Because even a beautiful rose has thorns.

Thinking about fairy tail and I came across the realisation that Gray’s magics are basically fighting each other?

Sure they’re both ice magic but:

Maker Magic vs Slayer Magic

They’re literally polar (haha) opposites!

And if you really want to make it worse: if you head canon that after taking the memento morí curse Gray was ‘demonised’ a bit, his magic could be hurting him.

It wouldn’t be the same for the dragon slayers because they’re magic gives them the dragon attributes. They aren’t actually part dragon.

—personally, i think all slayer types have a bit of what their magic is designed to destroy in them (keep your enemies closer type shit yk?), but i also like to ignore inconvenient things in my hcs for fun—

The idea of his magic hurting him is a horrifying thought so im thanking you immensely , this ended up being more of a ramble abt Grays magics in general tbh

If i remember correctly, Silver didnt have those ‘demonized’ marks and he used to same magic (also i hc that devil slayer magic is a mix of normal magic also curses, like using the demons own abilities against them, but thats a separate topic). Going off this, it’s because he had, what, 17 years to gradually learn it? He didn’t become demonized bc he didnt have to force himself to use it immediately

I think bc Gray having to learn so fast or having to use it so intensely immediately after getting his devil slayer magic that his body simply couldnt fully handle the onslaught of demonic-esque magic that it partially overrides his humanity in a sense. Which is why we get to see that ‘demonized’ look he has.

i ALSO think the reason he doesn’t become full demonized is because how he was able to learn so fast, bc he used the molding tactics he already knew. So when Gray uses his devil slayer abilities he is also using his makers magic at the same time, which restores some semblance of his humanity. (i really hope this makes as much sense to you as it does me)

On the topic of why Grays slayer magic may harm him and not other slayers,

Its bc of what i stated before, he had to use too much power too fast. Its like when someone who isnt used to exercising tries out a vigorous one without any warm up; it can hurt and overexert body and do more harm than good.

Slayer magic is different than most other type of magic, it more about raw power than a perfect technique (in this au anyways), it takes a little of whatever they’re supposed to destroy and transfers it into them a little more every-time they overuse it

Usually, Dragon slayers are raised by actual dragons, they were taught from the ground up what to do and what to not do, how to handle that much power at once and how to use it

Gray, a devil slayer, had absolutely none of that. He knew no more than what he observed of other slayer types, but every type of, even the different subtypes, work differently. So he was going from nothing and probably thought this was just how it felt all the time.

It felt like his two magics were at a constant war inside him every-time he used them together, both fighting for control of sorts, it hurt less than it felt extremely uncomfortable

Just had a fun idea for a filler ep. Basically, while the team are out on a job, they encounter a modified form of the Changeling spell that switches their magics instead of their bodies. Now, it's a race against the clock to figure out how to use each other's powers and defeat the guy that did this to them before the effects become permanent. And unlike the original Changeling, the swaps aren't paired together.

Gray ends up with Erza's Requip, mostly because I think it's funny that the accidental stripper ends up with a magic that lets him change into a million different armors. Speaking of which, Erza absolutely keeps an eye on him the whole time to make sure he doesn't lose anything.

Erza ends up with Wendy's Dragon Slayer magic. Truthfully, I don't have much of a reason for this one beyond liking the idea of Erza using dragon slaying magic. I feel like the first time she tries to roar, she takes in too much air and actively begins lowering the oxygen levels around her.

Wendy gets saddled with Lucy's Celestial Spirit magic. I'm going with this mostly because I remembered that girl from the Infinity Clock arc that Mest thought looked like Wendy and decided to sorta reference her. For the most part, I can see her doing pretty well with it, aside from maybe forgetting which key goes to which spirt.

Lucy winds up with Happy's Aera, mostly because I can see Happy teasing her about not being able to fly and I want to see her divebomb into a Lucy Kick.

Happy gets Carla's abilities, mainly because I can imagine there being a joke about him being bummed that he basically stayed the same until he has a vision or transforms.

Carla is stuck with Natsu's Dragon Slayer magic, purely because that kind of destructive power does not gel well with her. Like, she gets the hang of it, sure, but not before accidentally committing at least three acts of arson.

And last but not least, Natsu ends up with Gray's Ice Make and Devil Slayer magic. I imagine that at first he's pissed at how friggin' cold everything is now, but once he gets used to it he'd keep trying to Ice Make a dragon, only it for it to be the worst looking thing you've ever seen.

By the end of it, they've committed a record breaking amount of property damage for Fairy Tail.
