Fandom Throwback Thursday

Fanworks - be it fics, artworks, edits or moodboards - take time, love and energy to make but very often only show up for a few days (with luck weeks) on the dashboards of the fandom before they are buried under shitposts and memes and the daily tumblr madness and that's not only sad, but in many cases a real loss for the fandom community as a whole.

Many creators are frustrated and drained by this fast-paced way of creating and the mood has been down for quite some time now; so let's change that together!

The idea is simple: When Thursday comes around you reblog an 'older' piece of fanwork of your choice (or more. hell, go wild) to keep those amazing pieces from being forgotten. 'Older' can mean anything from three weeks to five years and beyond; believe me, creators love when their babies get exhumed and brought back to life.

Fic Throwback Thursday

Fanfic writers: if there’s an old story of yours that never made it to tumblr, or got buried, or just hasn’t gotten much attention in a while, consider this an invitation to promote it! You were here for, like, five minutes. What’s your excuse?”

(Crowley becomes more acquainted with Dog, and finds out they have more in common than he expected.)

Throwback Thursday, Fandom Edition: Wayside School Kid

This art was inspired by Chapter 25 of Wayside School Is Falling Down, in which Mrs. Jewls's class dresses up for Picture Day. There's no date on it, but I probably drew it sometime in the early or mid 1990s.

Not all of the students are pictured, but I'm pretty sure of who some of them are supposed to be.

Wayside School was one of my first literary obsessions, and almost everything about the series holds up to this day. I love the humor and the surreal worldbuilding, and the way the latter two books in particular blend episodic storytelling with multi-chapter arcs. I love the occasional forays into genuine horror, from a version of hell (or maybe purgatory) where students are trapped in the same classroom doing busywork for eternity, to a succession of substitute teachers who psychologically torment the kids in the third book. I love how, no matter how many weird things are happening to the main cast, there are always hints of other, unexplained forces at play in the background. Some of the chapters that have stuck in my mind the most firmly involve Miss Zarves (there is no Miss Zarves) and the 19th story (there is no 19th story), as well as the trio of mysterious men who seemed have some kind of control over the reality of the school, and asked questions like "Do you want to be free, or do you want to be safe?" I also, unsurprisingly, loved the Dr. Pickle chapters; although the ongoing "Paul can't stop himself from pulling Leslie's pigtails" story thread now carries some uncomfortable and all-too-real messages about consent and personal space, the idea of a school authority figure who hypnotizes the students in his care was, as a fantastical device, extremely formative for me.

"Joe's triangle went ting" and "I got a tutu too" and "How can you chew your nose?" and "Mr. Kidswatter is a Mugworm Griblick" were in-jokes in my family for years. I referenced the series in otherwise unrelated fanfics that I wrote as a teenager. My yellowing, water-warped childhood copy of Falling Down, signed by Mr. Sachar at the Boston Book Festival in 2015, sits on my bookshelf as I write this post.

Fandom Throwback Thursday

What are some "old" fanworks you have lurking on hard drives, in abandoned LiveJournals, or have just generally forgotten about? Do you have ancient fics that have survived several site migrations, old sketches, pics of your first cosplay? If so, I wanna see 'em!

My bit of show 'n tell comes from 2010! My main fandom was Transformers.

While decluttering a media cabinet this week, I came across a Transformers (G1) Tracks/Raoul Fanmix I had put together and for which I made a CD label and jewel case insert. Judging by the dates on the file names when I found the originals on an old USB (I originally posted it to LiveJournal on 6/14/2010) I must have put them all together on my EeePC 701 SD netbook. It must have been excruciating working on that tiny screen, but all I can remember is how much fun I had picking songs and printing out the pictures to put in the jewel case.

These are my drawings from January that I haven’t post these drawings cuz I forgot. Left side was Nonsurat with flowers, crystals and a halo before got her into pearls (her pearls are smt like an accessory) and right was a gijinka version without their mask/helmet before final look as KRBAY gijinka sketches at first I used to dislike how they look with the mask and helmet but as soon I got comfy to draw them with helmet and mask on human version I like.
