#favorite fashion moments of the Met Gala

In no particular order, my top looks from the 2023 Met Gala "Karl Lagerfeld: A Line in Beauty"

My thoughts are below, but I'll be honest, I didn't really do any background research this year because there wasn't much to be done. These are really just my opinions on whether or not I liked the look.

Ironically, I felt this was a very mediocre year, which led to me having a lot more favorites than usual because they were kind of all on the same level. In previous years I would have separated this into multiple posts, but I don't really see the point.

Doja Cat: I wanted someone to dress up as Choupette the cat and she delivered, and managed to do so in a way that was still fitting for the event

Keke Palmer: She looked amazing, and really captured the Chanel look with the bombshell hair and the extremely bedazzled tweed. I honestly don't want to think about how much that dress weighed

Anne Hathaway: Besides that fact that I love everything Anne Hathaway has ever done, this dress was the perfect combination of honoring Lagerfeld's style while also incorporating it into the style of the brand she was representing (Versace). It had tweed and pearls, but also sex appeal and safety pins

Cardi B: First, I just want to appreciate her ongoing commitment to high fashion and the fact that she had three (3) completely separate looks. This particular Miss Sohee look was my favorite because she's living out my glinda barbie mermaid fairy princess dreams

Harvey Guillen: This was one of the first looks I saw of the night, and still one of my favorites. It has all the Lagerfeld style essentials, but still manages to look unique. Plus, creative menswear always gets extra points because the bar is painfully low, though this year was a surprisingly pleasant exception.

Jennifer Lopez: It's not the most creative look, but it's right up my alley and honestly, do we expect anything groundbreaking from JLo? She's always going to show up in something pretty that's decently on theme enough for me to just focus on whether or not I like it. And this immediately makes me think of classic Chanel.

Penelope Cruz: She was a co-host, it's vintage Chanel couture from the 80's, and she's one of the people I most heavily associate with Lagerfeld and Chanel. A win all around.

Russell Westbrook: I really want to give Russell Westbrook credit for always showing up to the Met Gala and really going for it. I love all the details: the pearl necklace, the tweed blazer with floral clasps, the bows on the shoes

Chloe Fineman: Another first look that turned out to be a favorite. This again had all the necessary design elements without feeling like a cheap knockoff. Also major points for the bedazzled cat bag.

Anok Yai: I don't know and I don't care how this relates to theme, she looked like a goddess

Bad Bunny: Another man not only doing something interesting but incorporating the theme? Genuinely shocking. Obviously I loved the OTT floral cape, but I really loved the ode to c. 2005 Chanel with the backless suit and backwards necklace.

Gisele: She wore the same dress from an iconic 2007 editorial, proving not only that she still has it, but that she's always had it. A true supermodel.

Salma Hayek: She looked hot, I don't know what else you want me to say about it. Also it had color, which nothing else did. My eyes were starving for color.

Glenn Close: For starters, she needed an entire team to carry her train so props for that. She brought the drama, the glitz, and the "age is just a number so shut the hell up" glamor.

Lil Nas X: This was, for lack of a better phrase, a cheeks out, bedazzled, balls to the wall look. The Choupette inspiration is more obvious when he was inside with the fur (ish?) coat on, but I honestly didn't care. I needed a moment and he delivered. Though I do wonder (1) how long it took to bedazzle him and (2) will he every fully be de-glittered.

Brian Tyree Henry: I don't know if it's the pose or the cape, but it's giving me dramatic shakespeare vibes and I appreciate it.

Naomi Campbell: The only issue I have with this look is that they called 2010 Chanel Couture "vintage" and I can't accept that. Beyond that, I mean, it's Naomi Campbell in Chanel Couture. I was also dying for any semblance of color at this point and somehow this dress was among the most colorful

Jenna Ortega: The perfect combination of chanel tweed cropped blazer/mini skirt and the Wednesday Addams aesthetic. Which was interesting because I thought she was trying to move away from that but I don't care it was a successful look

Ava Max: Chanel was known for the haute couture bride, and this not only really captures that, it was one of the most and quite honestly only majorly dramatic looks of the night

Halle Bailey: She looked like a mermaid and I love that for her

Ashley Graham: I would have loved this look regardless, but after seeing the dress it was modeled after, I also think it was one of the best tributes of the night

Tems: Has she ever looked bad on a red carpet? Her headpieces are just getting bigger and more elaborate and I see nothing wrong with that.

Diddy: I love the drama + the floral cape, though I am left wondering how he didn't faint under all of that. Also, you can roast me all you want for captioning his post with Sean Combs but that's what was given to the AP so it's what I went with.

Shai Gilgeous Alexander: A final man who followed the theme and wore something interesting, arguably more interesting than some of the women. I actually think I like this look better without the coat over it.

Hi! I don’t know if you’re still answering Met Gala questions. If you are, I still as wondering if you could explain why you had Quannah Chasinghorse in Atelier Prabal Gurung as part of your top 10? I love her look and would wear the dress in an instant; she’s definitely one of my favorites in terms of loving the fashion, but I can’t figure out how it fits the theme. Did you put it on the list because of fitting the theme (which you definitely know more about than me) or just because it’s an AMAZING look? I’ve loved reading your thoughts; thank you for sharing your knowledge and expertise with us!

Of course! I've gotten a couple of questions about her look and I think she did a brilliant job of incorporating her culture while also understanding what the MET Gala is about.

Quannah Chasinghorse in Prabal Gurung with Jewelry by Lenise Omeasoo of Antelope Women Designs

While the Gilded Age was a massive boom of wealth and culture in the United States, much of this success was built off the exploited lands and labor of immigrants, Black people, and Indigenous Americans. Quannah went and flipped that narrative on it's head. Many people went with the Glamour part of the theme, but she went with the gilded. I pulled some quotes from this article in Vogue from Lenise Omeasoo herself and Quannah's mother, Jody Potts-Joseph. I think they articulate the deep message and meaning far better than I can.

"Chasinghorse’s accessories—her intricate jewelry and feather hairpieces—celebrated the idea of Native community and love in a unique way. The custom jewelry by Lenise Omeasoo, a Blackfeet and Cree artist who runs Antelope Women Designs, was intended to quite literally envelope the model with Native pride. “The piece was inspired by the Native community,” Omeasoo tells Vogue. “The tipis surrounding Quannah represent the love of her community, there with her.” Omeasoo applied dentalium shells, porcupine quills, and beads on smoked hide. “All the traditional materials I used were gifted through trade with other Native artists over the years,” says Omeasoo. “This was my first quilled jewelry set—a bit risky, but I wanted to give my all for Quannah’s iconic moment.”" -Lenise Omeasoo

Working as a high-class supermodel definitely has its perks, some of them being the endless traveling around the globe, the flow of money and expensive possessions, such as designer brand clothes, a crib in the outskirts of Seoul and a sleek black Mustang - his favorite.

But most of all, Kim Mingyu is a renowned bachelor and a playboy who has kept the paparazzis and gossip sites busy with his…rather wild personal life. And when Kim Mingyu sets his sight on something or someone, he’ll do everything in his power to get it, even if it means bringing pain on others.

And this is exactly what would happen after one fateful night - the night he met you.

Y/N L/N. A famous influencer and socialite - one post on your Instagram account brings you enough money to pay for a luxurious trip to an exotic place. You’re known throughout the high societies of fashion temples, you’re bound to be attending fashion shows and fancy galas, always sitting at the front row, next to designers, photographers and lots of important people. 

That’s where you met your beloved boyfriend of two years, Joshua Hong. You and Joshua were both invited at the show, blessing the eyes of everyone there, flashing warm smiles and exchanging chaste yet warm kisses with your boyfriend, his eyes shining brighter than all the rhinestone-decorated dresses, glittery makeup and lights of the catwalk. You watched the show with huge interest, your eyes fixated on the new launches, the smooth fabrics and the flow on the models. 

Until he came into the view. 

It was as if time stopped, the repeated clicks of the cameras around you and the loud murmurs of the guests around you turning into a blur, as your pupils dilate at the sight of the one and only Kim Mingyu, effortlessly strutting on the catwalk, owning it, making it his. You had never seen him close, only from photos and videos online, but damn, the real thing is always better.

He didn’t leave your mind even after the end of the catwalk and during the party, mindlessly swirling the flute of champagne in your hand.

How could a man like him exist? What was he made of? God? The Devil? Those questions were running laps in your mind.

“Something on your mind, angel?”, Joshua's smooth voice brings you back to reality, his hand resting on the small of your back. “Just…feeling lucky to be here”, you reply with a soft smile, “With all these important people, all the glamor…With you”, you add and mentally wince for lying to your beloved. “Aw, my baby is getting wholesome”, he coos with a laugh and presses a kiss on your cheek.

“Oh my, if it isn’t Joshua Hong showing affection in public”, a deep, velvety voice disrupts the rather intimate moment and you both turn around to see the one man who has been tormenting your thoughts for the past three hours. “Oh my, if it isn’t Kim Mingyu starting a normal conversation”, Joshua jokes and shares a tight hug with the man. “How have you been, my friend?”, “Eh, the usual. Traveling, modeling, booking shoots, meeting dashing beauties”, Mingyu flashes a toothy grin. He then shifts his eyes to you and you feel a jolt on your spine as his gaze changes into something indescribable, something you can’t quite put your finger on.

“Speaking of dashing beauties, how dare you don’t introduce me to the beautiful lady accompanying you, Joshua”, he smoothly switches the attention to you, “I’m Kim Mingyu. And you are?”, “Y/N L/N. It’s a pleasure to meet you, sir Kim”, you opt for a handshake. “My my, such good manners. And please, call me Mingyu”, he smiles and presses a kiss on the back of your hand. “Y/N is an influencer - and a very successful one”, Joshua sweeps next to you, wrapping his arm around your waist, instinctively bringing you closer to him, “Isn’t that right, angel?”, “If you say so, Shua”, you giggle and turn to kiss him, Mingyu’s gaze feeling heavy  on you all of a sudden.

“You’ve always been a lucky man, Joshua. And lady luck is still on your side, it seems”, the model comments. “Indeed. Although I’d like to call it ‘fate’ rather than luck”, he looks at you again fondly. “Fate or luck, I advise you to keep this pretty lady as close as you can”, Mingyu adds on, ready to walk away.

“Anyone could swoop in and steal her away”.

Your eyes meet Mingyu’s eyes again for a split second and you can feel trouble oozing from him, especially with the words he spoke just now. 

But it only makes you wanna find out more about the man.

“Interesting guy”, you nonchalantly say while sipping on your champagne. “Interesting, yet dangerous and troublesome”, Joshua sighs audibly. “I thought he was your friend?”, “He is. But that doesn’t mean I’ll turn a blind eye to his true nature”, “And what is his true nature?”, “He’s a man with looks, power and fame. But he’s also irrevocably attracted to danger in most of its forms - especially fast cars and pretty women, single or taken”, Joshua explains, “Wow, you make him sound like an asshole”, you laugh but stop once you see your boyfriend’s serious expression. “I think it’s better to keep your distance from him”.

“Shua, I’d never betray you for someone else”, you put down your glass and cup his cheeks with your hands. “I know, sweetheart”, he smiles softly and takes your hands in his, pressing a kiss on the tips. “Come on, let’s enjoy the party, shall we?”, and he takes you by your hand, pulling you against him to enjoy the rest of the night.

Meanwhile, Mingyu is watching the two of you being all lovey-dovey, gaze seething with jealousy, tongue darting out to wet his bottom lip, focusing on your enticing silhouette and the champagne bodycon dress of yours. 

Thinking how pretty you’d look without it and under him, moaning his name.

Not that it’d be long before it happens.

“Ugh, my head is spinning”, you rub your temples while waiting for your face cream to dry. “Maybe you shouldn’t have drunk so much champagne, baby”, Joshua chuckles while putting on his pajamas, ruffling his hair slightly. “It’s not my fault it was actually good for once!”, you whine and pat your face with your fingertips, hoping it’ll dry faster. “I have to say, the party was more fun than expected”, you comment, “Yeah, it was hilarious to see two instagrammers pulling each other’s extensions”, Joshua snorts. “You do know I’m an instagrammer too, right, Shua?”, you throw him a slight glare, “I know, but you ain’t fake like them, honey. Plus, you’ve never gotten in drama like this”. 

As if on cue, a notification on Instagram pops up in your phone and you open the screen to a very surprising sight.

mingyu_k has started following you.

“Y/N?”, “Hm?”, “Is everything okay? You got serious all of a sudden”, Joshua rubs your arm soothingly. “Oh? N-No, it’s nothing important…Just a verification I forgot to do on the app, won’t take me long”, you reassure him. “Okay sweetie, I’ll be off to sleep”, he pecks your lips, “Don’t stay too much though, you need to rest!”, he chirps while exiting the bathroom and you flash a small smile.

Nothing important. Another lie within a night. About the same person. 

You feel your hands getting clammy, not knowing what to do next. Kim Mingyu followed you on Instagram and you’re on the edge of panicking, because you can feel it in your bones that he did it with a purpose in mind. Suddenly, Joshua’s words during the party are brought to the surface again and they’re running laps in your brain, red flags going off left and right. 

Then why did you press the follow back button? And most importantly, why are you still waiting over your phone and not going to sleep, wrapped in your boyfriend’s arms? 

mingyu_k: you look even better than the photos, sweetheart

Of course he’s flirting, you think to yourself and type an answer, your manicured nails clicking on the screen.

its_yn: is that what you tell to every girl you follow? 

Mingyu is currently laying on the king-sized bed of his hotel suite, only in a pair of tight, black boxers, quietly chuckling at your response, not wanting to wake up the naked girl who’s blissfully asleep right next to him - probably tired after getting railed by him after the party.

mingyu_k: only the ones who get my attention right away

He watches the three dots bounce on the screen of his phone and scoffs lightly when you reply to his message.

its_yn: sure sir playboy supermodel

mingyu_k: you’re flattering me, sweetheart

its_yn: don’t let it get to your head though

mingyu_k: that would be me getting in your pretty lil head, babe

mingyu_k: you thought i didn’t notice the way you were looking at me during the catwalk?

“Fuck”, you curse under your breath, feeling yourself heat up by each passing second, basically driven into a corner by Mingyu - how the hell did he notice you? There were so many people in the front rows and he walked on the catwalk for what? Thirty seconds? A minute? You couldn’t understand.

But it was so adrenaline-inducing, this little push and pull game you’ve both started, with no intentions of stopping any time soon, despite the underlying danger.

its_yn: so what? Is it a bad thing to admire a handsome person at work?

Mingyu smirks like a devil at your latest message and he glances over to the asleep girl, shifting a bit further away from her to open his camera and take a pic of his spread thighs and then another one, pressing ‘send’ immediately.

mingyu_k sent two photos.

You open the messages and your mouth goes agape at the sight of Mingyu’s deliciously muscular thighs being spread on the mattress. But the second picture is even worse - his perfectly sculptured face smirking in the camera, craning his neck backwards on purpose to flex it and the hint of his taut chest, oh God, his fucking chest-

its_yn: you’re fucking insane

mingyu_k: so what? Is it a bad thing to share pics with another pretty person?

mingyu_k: or are you scared of your pretty lil gentleman finding out?

“God, you fucking asshole”, you breathe out and run your hand through your hair in frustration. 

its_yn: it’s getting late you know

mingyu_k: does my princess want her beauty sleep?

its_yn: i’m not your princess, mingyu

mingyu_k: of course you aren’t

mingyu_k: go back to your pretty prince baby, he’s probably waiting for you

its_yn: just don’t text me again

mingyu_k: I won't. but you will

its_yn: maybe in your dreams

mingyu_k: the only dreams you’ll see are yours with me, babe

All while you close your phone in a panic and silently go back to bed, slipping into Joshua’s arms, hoping his embrace would wash away your worries and guilt, Mingyu is laying back on the bed, a dirty, triumphant grin plastered on his face. 

“What Kim Mingyu wants, Kim Mingyu will get it”, he mutters, licking the corner of his lips, shutting his eyes and letting sleep take over him.

Your sleep was terrible, to say the least. 

You couldn’t stop thinking about the short conversation you had with Mingyu in your dms and you most certainly couldn’t stop thinking about the pictures he sent you. Yes, Joshua did warn you about his mannerisms, but you never expected he’d be so… direct with you. It made you nervous, but it also lit a spark inside you - as if the sudden attention he was giving you made you feel… wanted. 

To be completely honest, you still love Joshua. But the amount of time you both have invested in your respective work has definitely dealt a damage to your relationship - in the most intimate part of it, specifically. In other words, you haven’t had sex with your boyfriend in almost a month. Waking up at completely different hours and returning home late has become a part of your routines and you aren’t even married yet.

Even today, you woke up alone, Joshua’s side completely empty and cold on the bed of the suite you were staying in. To his defense though, he did leave you a small note, apologizing for having to catch a different flight than you back to Seoul, saying he’d text you as soon as he gets to Incheon Airport.

You groggily get up and go to the bathroom, hoping a cold shower would wake you up and a rich breakfast at the hotel restaurant would charge you with much-needed energy before the trip back home.

About an hour later, you’re back in the room, taking your clothes out of the closet and carefully folding them and placing them in your suitcase. You check the time on your phone and opt to take a quick picture, uploading it on Instagram as a story, captioning it with “packing up for home <3”. Seeing you still have some time before checking out of the hotel, you decide to sit on the balcony, enjoying the beautiful view in front of you.

You had visited Paris on your first year anniversary with Joshua and you had the time of your life. You smile softly as you remember the fond memories you created with your beloved boyfriend, the walks you shared along the Elysian fields, on top of the Eiffel Tower.

Your phone rings all of a sudden, snapping you out of your dreamy state. You open the screen and cold sweat washes over your body as you see a new message from Mingyu, who happened to be the first one to see your story.

mingyu_k: only one suitcase, huh? did your prince charming leave you alone already?

"No rest for the wicked, huh", you scoff and open the chat, typing out your answer.

its_yn: none of your business

its_yn: it won't be long before I'm with him again anyways

You hope this will shut him up and leave you at your peace. 

But of course not.

mingyu_k: maybe you will, maybe you won’t

its_yn: what the hell is that supposed to mean

mingyu_k: i’m just saying you might be led astray in the meantime, sweetheart

its_yn: by who? you?

mingyu_k: that’s on you, angel

You wanted to throw your phone off the balcony and scream out of frustration. Because Kim Mingyu was definitely frustrating you to no end. Why you? What was that made him stick to you like a leech in such a short period of time? 

You’ve been thrown into a spiral of thoughts and guilt since last night, your little talk with Mingyu and his very provocative pics not letting you sleep peacefully, making your panties a mess - all while Joshua was sound asleep right next to you. 

You shake your head sideways and try to get a grip of yourself. You huff and enter the room again, taking your suitcase and leaving the room, riding the elevator down to the reception and checking out earlier, hoping you’ll catch an earlier flight home.

You exit the hotel and go straight to the taxi waiting outside the hotel entrance, the driver helping you put the suitcase in the car. “Where to, miss?”, “Charles de Gaulle airport, please”, “Right away, miss”, the driver reassures you and you sit back comfortably, pulling out your phone to check whether you can change your ticket to an earlier flight. You call, hoping you’ll find a seat in time and after a quarter of talking on the phone, you manage to book a seat in business class with the 13:20 flight to Seoul.

The taxi ride passes in a blur and you find yourself bolting out of the car after paying the driver, rushing to pay for your ticket and get your luggage checked, your hands getting clammy. This is why I hate last minute changes, you think and groan, taking your luggage back and running to the airplane as fast as you can, completely missing the familiar pair of eyes who follow you until you enter the airplane.

A few minutes later, you’re safely in the plane, sitting on your seat, which is thankfully right next to the window. You take out your phone and call your boyfriend before your flight takes off.

“Babe?”, “Joshie? Where are you?”, “The flight made a stop at Dubai and I’m kinda stuck here for the time being. Where are you though? I saw your story this morning”, “Ahaha, yeah… About that”, you trail off with an awkward laugh. “You’re on the plane to Seoul, aren’t you?”, he asks with a knowing tone. “Okay fine, the flight departs in ten minutes! I couldn’t stay in Paris anymore. Especially alone”, you pout and he chuckles. “Did my angel get homesick already?”, “Yeah, kinda…”, “It’s okay, baby. Be patient and we’ll see each other again soon”, Joshua reassures you and the warmth of his tone calms you down.

For now.

“Attention please. The plane will depart shortly. You’re kindly requested to take your seats and fasten your seat belts”, you hear the announcement by the air hostess. “Hey Joshie?”, “I heard it, angel”, “Gotta go now”, “Okay, have a safe flight home, Y/N”, “You too, Josh”, you tell him and turn off the phone, fastening your seatbelt.

“Eager to see your prince charming, aren’t you, sweetheart?”, a deep voice is heard right next to you and you freeze in your seat as you turn around and see none other than Kim Mingyu sitting right next to you. On the same plane.

“What are you doing here?!”, “Getting ready to enjoy my flight, sweetheart”, Mingyu grins playfully and you feel absolutely powerless, cornered in your seat - quite literally. “Is this even your seat?”, you scoff, trying to ignore him, but he chuckles and fishes out his ticket. “Does that answer your question?”, he places it in your lap and to your dismay, the number of his seat is indeed the one right next to yours.

“Just my fucking luck”, you mutter under your breath. “Why the long face, Y/N? I think we could have a great time together”, Mingyu purrs in your ear and the hairs on the back of your neck are standing straight, his seductive tone already messing with your brain. “What is your problem, Mingyu?”, you face him, “Why are you so attached to me all of a sudden?”. You notice how his eyes darken, flashing his pearly white canines with a sultry smirk and you try to keep your composure because fuck, he looks so goddamn sexy and irresistible.

I should probably give a heads up that I have mixed feelings about the Met Gala, because i've been working in media for so long and every year we had a chaotic day trying to report on everything so it gives me anxiety sometimes. Also some of these might be basic or I might be missing really obvious ones

This is the first image that comes to mind when the Met Gala is mentioned. Every single Rihanna look is a serve but goodness, this is a 100000/10

Can't decide between these two looks from Blake Lively, she looks so regal. She just gets it every time and I admire that.

Cher wearing the original naked dress. She looks like a dream.

I am so sorry to Z, I loved her Cinderella moment, but I liked Claire Danes' a little more. It just looks so well executed and the silouette is amazing

Speaking of Z, her Jean D'Arc look is probably one of my all time favorite of hers, she just looks so fierce and majestic and that hairstyle shouldn't be working as well as it does on anyone but here we are

Meeting the parents wasn’t supposed to be nerve wracking, but Arthur Fox was literally James Bond, and Alex might throw a New Years Bash in Texas for his mother’s Governor’s ball every year, but Arthur’s Halloween parties are legendary.

8. The one where it’s shipping season and the suitors get competitive

“Fall Ball, there is no earthly antiquated reason why this kingdom still does something so ghastly”

“You want to ask Alexander don’t you?” Pez asks with a raised eyebrow

“Just me and everyone else,” Henry sighs out.

In an event rivaling the Spring Fling, the Fall Ball was one of the most prime positions during suitors season to make a move. Everyone wants Alexander’s hand, so Henry must work extra hard to capture his heart.

9. The one where Alex is a ghost courier

Alex looks down at his note again and shakes his head. Trying out the Ouija board with Nora had been a mistake. Now he was on some convoluted journey to tell a bunch of people a ghosts last wishes. The laundry list of names is long, but near the bottom there is one that makes his heart flip over in his chest, why in the world would a disembodied voice want to talk with Henry?.

10. The one where they are making spooky outfits for the Met Gala

The Met Gala Costuming Institute has named this years theme as “The Haunting.” It might only be tipping into fall but the design houses are already in full swing. Too bad fashion’s best and brightest don’t get along… or do they?

This year’s MET was really good honestly, and I think the reason people stayed on theme is because most of the people there worked with Karl , and they could easily pull vintage or current looks from Fendi, Chloe, and especially Chanel. But I really liked that a lot of people actually were dressed in other designers instead of just wearing one of those three brands cus that could have been TOO easy (though I think they needed an easy one cus they’ve been struggling)

I still hate that she decided to honor that man

The carpet was horrible and looked like toothpaste was spread across the carpet

And horrible was Anna’s outfit too

That was by far the most average boring met gala. Idk if it’s the theme or what but it just felt like literally any other red carpet. No drama no wow moment no shocking moments nothing iconic. Basic AF and almost everyone wore black/white. maybe I am expecting too much? Idk

The theme this year was kinda "meh" to me honestly (for more reasons than one).

I think one of my favorite themes from one Met in more recent times was the one where they had the religious theme. Believe it or not, but people got really creative with that one, and it really showcased fashion really well!

NCT’s Johnny Suh on His Debut at Met Gala 2022 & Members’ Reactions

NCT’s Johnny Suh was a new face at Met Gala 2022, but he certainly turned heads. The Chicago-born K-pop idol flew in from Seoul, South Korea, to attend the Costume Institute Gala in New York City with designer Peter Do.

Since debuting, Johnny has established a distinguished style profile both on and off the stage. With every comeback, we see Johnny in a new look, and in between, we see his personal style shine on his vlog series Johnny’s Communication Center (especially through his fashion evaluations).

It seems Johnny’s style also caught the eye of Peter Do, the Vietnamese-born, NYC-based designer behind many of your favorite runway and celebrity looks. Known for modern, imaginative suits, the LVMH Graduates Prize recipient designed a three-piece set in black satin. Paired with statement boots and a sleek hairstyle, the look marked Johnny’s first Met Gala.

To celebrate his Met Gala debut, Johnny told Teen Vogue all about the experience, from working with Peter Do to finally stepping on the red carpet. 

On working with Peter Do

I feel like for a long time, our teams were trying to get us together, but we were looking for the right occasion, and I guess the Met Gala was the soonest and the best place to showcase Peter Do and me.

Everything happened really quickly. He gave me the sketch a week before, and he started making it then. I really look into details of clothing and I think Peter Do really emphasizes that. I feel like it was definitely a collaboration between the theme of the Met Gala and Peter Do's signature look.

And as soon as I came in from Korea, we went to get fitted and everything was just really quick. Everything was really smooth. Thankfully, all the clothes fit right as soon as I got here. So there were no problems and everything was just perfect.

On choosing accessories and hair color

There were a lot of options, but we came to one earring because of how simple it was and because of how it really kind of stood out.

I think there was a lot of talk about [my hair color] before I came from Korea. We wanted to go with something more slick. Something that showed off a little cooler side of myself.

On the song that best fits the look

Our song “Kick It” would be a great song to match it to because I was feeling confident in that outfit yesterday.

On walking the red carpet

I have been on many red carpets. I think this was the first time that I was really nervous because I didn't know what was going to happen in there. I heard that my team couldn't come inside, so that got me really worried. And there were a lot of people I've never met before that I really have wanted to meet. It was just so many new things at once. That's what made it kind of nerve-racking.

It was actually great. It was less stressful than I thought it would be. There were a lot of people there to help me. I had wonderful people standing with me in line and everybody was really sweet. It wasn't really hard to have a conversation with anybody.

We had Eva Chen with us because Peter Do also dressed her, and she was very sweet and kind and because of her — she knew everybody — people came up to talk, and I got to meet everybody.

By the time I was on the red carpet, it was just like, “Finally it's my turn.” There's a very long line and we were standing in the line for about 40 minutes. I was just like, "Finally I could get on. I just want to go inside now," but I tried not to show [it]. [I] just tried to look cool.

On the after-party look

I think I was supposed to be a little more loose, because we were kind of on the tighter side during [the] Gala look. So we wanted to show off a little more of a free side of me. Everything was really oversized.

“Regular” would be the song. Because that's how I dress on the regular.

On remembering the experience

I think it's actually extraordinary, to say the least. I never knew this would ever happen. And now that it did, it's still kind of unbelievable. I'm sure that I'll look back on this day like years from now and just still remember every single moment of it. That's how impactful it was to me, and it was also the first Met Gala of my life.

On how the members reacted to his Met Gala debut

Everybody was just like, “Oh dude, you were so hot.” And I was like, “I can’t wait to see you guys when I get back to Korea. I can’t wait to tell you all about it!"

GEMMA CHAN at the 2022 Met Gala on May 2nd 2022 in New York City wearing LOUIS VUITTON

I was not impressed with Louis Vuitton this year. I like custom and fun new looks from designers, and everyone wore something we’ve already seen before. Gemma wore a dress that we saw pretty recently on Hoyeon. However, Gemma did have one of my favorite LV looks of the night.

With the wide and body skirt, and all the glitz and glamour, this look felt really on theme. I really liked the skirt and the layers on it. I also loved the little coat thrown over her shoulders. It was a strong look, but it wasn’t enough for me. We already saw it a few months ago and it just didn’t have a big enough wow factor for me. Gemma is maybe my favorite fashion star at the moment, and she’s has had much stronger looks this year and at previous MET Gala’s.

You’ve been to so many iconic fashion shows; which of them stand out in your mind as being emotionally moving or show-stopping?

I would say the most impactful show for me was Virgil Abloh’s last Off-White show. I couldn’t make it to the show as I was very pregnant at the time, but I was able to watch it live. I thought it was so beautiful, emotional, and moving.

I have to imagine you have an incredible fashion archive; what pieces are you most excited to save for Atlanta?

I save everything for my daughter—I have the most amazing pieces, and I cannot wait to share my entire archive with her when she is older. I’m so excited to see how she is going to wear and style them! And hopefully she wears one of my Met dresses to prom [laughs].

Tell me a little bit about your CR Fashion Book cover shoot. What was the vibe like on set? How were you feeling about the styling?

It was so much fun shooting for CR—we ended up staying until 11 P.M. to make sure we got the best shots! Blake is one my favorite people on earth and we get along so well on both our personal and work relationship. I thought the styling was really fun, and my favorite shot has to be the one where I am surrounded by my most memorable wig moments.

You’ve been running a business for so long; how do you keep the KHY empire evolving?

I am so blessed to have a job where I genuinely love what I do. I’ve always enjoyed makeup—creating a look is a creative process that I really love. I’m lucky to have been able to turn my passion into a successful business, and share my favorite products with consumers. It is so much fun, and there are still so many products we haven’t launched yet that I want to develop. I’ve been working really hard on my clothing brand these past few months and I can’t wait to share more about my next drop. Fashion runs in my family’s blood, so I’m really blessed for being able to follow my own path in this.
