Rhett’s place was actually a loft in one of the barns up close by the Abbott family ranch house. They still stored hay up there, but there was a bed and a mini-fridge and one of those small Coleman camping gas ranges set up on a table if he wanted to cook up something. It wasn’t much, but at least it was something for when he got locked out of the house or just wanted some space to breathe. And right now, he needed a lot of space to breathe as he laid a whimpering, panting, writhing Tessa Abernathy onto his bed.
When he put her in his passenger seat at the bonfire, she was still wearing jeans and a few layers. The entire five minute drive she had squirmed and whined softly, sweating into his cloth seats. Rhett had told her, as she threw her head back and rubbed her thighs together, that she could take something off if she needed to.
He just didn’t expect her to peel off everything but her t-shirt.
The only thing Rhett knew about heats was from sex-ed class in high school. Nearly a decade ago and too vague now that he was dealing with it. Now that he had had an Omega in his front seat touching herself just to make the ache stop and panting his name.
But something like instinct was taking over his brain as he made quick work of his clothes, shucking them off and leaving them scattered on the floor. She was touching herself again. Two fingers shoved deep in her center, her free hand underneath her thin shirt — tweeking her sore breast. She whimpered his name again and it felt like a burn.
“M’comin’, Tess, m’comin’.”
Something like a second mind was telling him what she needed from him now as the Alpha who had marked her. A distinct smell of her covered in him that drove him mad. He needed to touch her. Fill her. Breed her. His cock twitched at the thought, that something clouding his brain as he growled low in his throat. As he watched her juices leak out around her fingers, his hand roughly palming himself through his boxers. He meant it when he said he wanted to take things slow with her. Even if those thoughts in the back of his head had been telling him for months that she was his. He wanted it to be her choice, he wanted this to feel right and good and natural between them.
But even rushed and unexpected — it still felt good and right. As he propped his knee up on the foot of the bed, continuing to watch her in nearly a daze.
Her eyes, half-lidded and hazy, caught him standing at the edge of the bed and she reached for him. Fingers outstretched as she whined softly.
“Alpha,” Tessa breathed, a few more tears running down her reddened cheeks. “Please. Hurts.”
At her word, the cloud abated, and he climbed fully onto the bed with her.
He could smell something — could nearly see the scent hanging in the air. A trail along the hallway lined with lockers. Honeysuckle and the air of early morning. Crisp and sweet.
On some instinct he didn’t understand, Rhett followed it. Let it lead him all the way to the nurses station up by the main office. Standing outside the door, a thought from somewhere else slammed into the forefront of his mind. Fill. He didn’t want to admit to himself that some part of him knew. Knew where this trail would lead. Knew what or who needed to be filled…Filled by him. He could already feel himself swelling in his jeans as he wrapped his hand around the door handle.
Tessa Abernathy was sitting on the nurse’s exam table. Red faced, sweating, face pinched up in a grimace with fingernails digging into her thighs. She was on the rodeo team with him. Barrel raced and got pretty blue ribbons for her efforts. Friends with Laney — Walker’s girl. Quiet and kind and radiating with that smell of honeysuckle and early morning air.
She was hurting. And somehow he knew he could make it better.
He stepped further into the room as he mumbled, “M’sorry, I don’...”
Tessa gripped her stomach — a whimper falling out of her as those tears finally fell. The sound went through him like a knife. Sharp and painful. He wanted to make it better. He could make it better. He could ease her pain and fill her and make everything good for her.
Omega. Fill.
The words screamed in his mind as he lifted his hand towards the strap to his backpack. Ready to drop it on the floor and cross the room to her right then and there. But then the nurse walked back into the room. Yelled at him to leave.
And he did.
He regretted that moment for the past ten years. Leaving her in pain. Leaving her empty. A memory he didn’t like to think back on. But then she stumbled back into his life. Beautiful and warm as the sun. Offering up a kindness he didn’t think he deserved but she gave so freely. But then she went into heat at that party and he couldn’t let anyone else have her. She was his. His. His. His Omega. His to fill.
Rhett groaned as he knelt over her, cupping her face in his hands to kiss her properly this time. Their first kiss. Not what he wanted their first kiss to be either. But it was so much more than he felt it would normally be. More intense, more wonderful, more desperate. Tessa whined, high pitched and desperate into his mouth, both hands reaching and pawing at him with whatever strength she had left. One hand trailed down her jaw, felt the residual sweat and tears, before it slipped down her neck.
Her mating gland was swollen — moreso than he had ever felt before. His fingers massaged gently as he licked into her mouth. But it made her moan, wanton and open, as her hips bucked up to meet him.
Rhett smiled, small and adoring, as he shushed her; fingers pushing her hair back from her face. “Easy. Easy. I know’mega, s’alright. ‘M’gonna take care’a ya now.”
When he was a kid, he used to find the honeysuckle bushes with Perry. Find the flowers in that early summer air, pluck one from the rest and suck the nectar from them. It felt like that to kiss her sweat slicked skin. Honeysuckle nectar sweet as he mouthed and licked and sucked down the side of her neck. As he peppered that swollen gland with light pecks of his lips.
Tessa thrashed and whined softly beneath him as he trailed one hand down her stomach, past that t-shirt he pulled effortlessly over her head, to find her swollen and dripping. An awe and a growl filled him at the way she gripped the two fingers he sunk into her, at the way she pulsated and moaned. When his fingers were fully seated inside her, he looked up to see more tears streaming down her face, her hands weakly pushing and pulling at him. He didn’t know if it was for him to stop or for him to keep going.
He knew what she needed from him now. What she needed and craved on some base instinct. But still, he didn’t want to hurt her. He wanted this to be good for her in every way.
“Rhett,” she cried as he pushed those two fingers in and out, making her whole body shudder.
“I know wha’ya need, sunshine, I jus’...Jus’ soak my fingers like a good’mega n’ll give it t’ya.” She keened high in her throat and it made him grin. “Tha’s it. Takin’ my fingers s’well.”
His fingers stuffing her full seemed to have abated her for the moment, but after just a few pumps she seemed to know it wasn’t what what she really craved. Not what she really needed. Her hips are squirming and jerking, her head thrown back as she took what he gave. But it wasn’t enough. Wasn’t enough.
“Please, Rhett, please — oh — need t’please…Alpha, please, please, can I — want it so bad. Need — Need t’be full,” she panted, eyes barely peeled open as she clawed at his back.
And he knew it too.
Biting into her jaw gently, he whispered, husky and deep, “Wan’ya t’cum f’r me first.”
It was like she was waiting for permission. Going stiff beneath him, she gasped, fingernails digging into his flesh as her walls convulsed around his fingers. Refusing to let go. She whined as he pulled them free, his hand soaked to the knuckle. But still she squirmed, her hips searching for something. Anything. Him. His cock, his knot, ready and aching to fill her.
Tessa opened her eyes, a few more tears leaking down her face, some clarity in her countenance for the first time since he marked her. He kissed her then. Gentle and consuming.
“Thank you,” she whispered, trying to tug him closer even though they were chest to chest, skin to skin.
Rhett shook his head, cupped her cheek. “Don’.”
“Why?”
“You didn’...Didn’get t’choose.”
She smiled, soft and sunshine bright. “Yeah I did. I chose you, my Alpha. Back when I’s seventeen…So good t’me.”
That made Rhett growl, low and showing some teeth. That second brain fuzzing all his thought as he flipped her onto her stomach. Practically ripping his boxers off as he urged one of her legs to bend, spreading her open for him. His cock was red, nearly purple at the tip, as it leaked and slapped against his stomach. He had never knotted someone before either, a biological process that only occured when an Alpha bred an Omega.
But he could already feel it beginning to form, causing a near pain as he lined himself up with her leaking entrance.
“Such a good Omega, sunshine, fuck — so good. My Omega. Mine.”
He was rambling now as he pushed in nice and slow. Some noise like a moan was falling consistently from her mouth, high pitched and breathy as she took him easily to the hilt. Every one of his nerves felt like it was on fire as he waited for her to adjust, or at least tried to. Even the feeling of him filling her was enough to make her flutter around him. He struggled to breathe even as he lost all composure and began to thrust deep and heavy into her awaiting cunt.
Each thrust forward forced a noise out of her, forced her higher up the bed. Her hands scrambled to reach for something, reach for him, and she didn’t stop until he grabbed hold of the back of her hand and laced their fingers together. Holding her down and grounding her. Grounding him.
“Fuck, you feel s’good,” he grumbled in her ear as he pressed himself into her back, blanketing her in him.
Changing the angle of his hips, he knew he hit that spongey spot inside her when she choked for breath. Rhett watched her mouth drop open further, her eyelids flutter, her breathing pick up as he gave short but powerful thrusts into that spot directly. Her fingers held a death grip on his own.
“Good, ‘mega,” he grumbled, shifting closer. “That’s a good fuckin’mega.”
Tessa made some choked noise, shoulders hunching in on herself as he just kept going. Kept pushing right into that spot. He felt her clench around him, keeping him as deep as he could go — it made him shudder and twitch inside her. But he didn’t want this to end just yet. Didn’t want it to stop feeling this good. So he curled his free arm around her and pressed his fingers into her little bundle of nerves.
“A-Ah!” she cried softly, legs trying to claw into the mattress and gain some traction.
“God, y’re makin’ such pretty lil’noises, ‘mega. Think y’can make s’more f’r me?”
“S-Someone c-could hear,” she stuttered out, glancing towards the hay door that hung cracked open.
Being stuffed full of him and at least partially satiated, some of Tessa had come back into her it seemed. This was having the opposite effect on Rhett. The further they went the more lost he became. Lost in her scent, lost in her pussy, lost in filling her like his biology screamed to do. But she was also his Omega — and he longed to please her.
“What? Y’scared someone’s gonna hear ya take m’knot?” he questioned.
The thought made her flutter around him, but she still nodded. “C’Come check it out.”
She had a fair point, but if someone from the house hadn’t come to investigate her moaning at that point, Rhett was unsure if anyone ever would. But he could see the worry in her eyes, keeping her from letting go completely and caving into the pleasure he so desperately wanted to give her. So, he let go of her hand and brought two fingers up to her lips. He bumped the rough pads against the swollen flesh and she parted for him with heavy lidded eyes.
“That’s it — that’s my ‘mega,” he said with a grin as he pushed his fingers into her mouth and pressed down on her tongue, she practically went limp beneath him. “My fingers’ll keep ya nice’n quiet.”
But that didn’t stop him from trying to draw every little noice he could from her. He wanted people to hear. Wanted everyone to know that he fucked his Omega that good. That it was him filling her and not anyone else. So he gathered the last of his composure and slowed everything down. Took his dear sweet time as he pressed against that spot inside her and held it there, as he circled her swollen clit with firm, lethargic circles. And he watched, revelled, in the way her jaw went slack around his fingers. At the heavy look in her blue eyes. At the way her chest heaved and her body went practically limp caged beneath him.
With every press and pull of him, with every breath she took, she made some noise around his fingers. He felt the vibrations of it al teh way down his arm, and it made a smile tug at the corner of his mouth. And he kept up that same slow, beautifully agonizing pace as she was brought closer and closer to release.
And he was brought closer and closer to insanity.
Her walls spasmed around his fingers as he massaged her in perfect time with his thumb against her clit. A sob echoed around his other hand as tears slipped down her cheeks.
“F-Feels good, ‘mega?” he stuttered, vision blurred and mind hazy but still grasping the last of his control.
Tessa nodded with another sob.
Until this point, she had been boneless on the mattress. But now her hands scrambled to curl around any part of him she could reach, liek seh was scared he would leave now that she was so close. Her breathing was heavy, hard, fast as she moaned and sobbed and drooled around his fingers. Tears running down her cheeks as she stared bleary eyed at the wall. He could feel her thighs quaking beneath him, her walls spasming and trying to pull him deeper.
“I-I got ya, ‘mega, I got ya,” he whispered as he leaned down and pressed a gentle kiss to her swollen mating gland. “Let go.”
Let go she did. Rhett watched, the last of his sanity dwindling, as her eyes rolled back. Her walls gripped him so tight he didn’t think he could move even if he tried to. Something high-pitched and loud got caught around his fingers still pressing down on her tongue. He could feel her juices coating his thighs.
After that, Rhett wasn’t entirely sure what happened.
All he remembered was flashes of Tessa screaming in pleasure, skin slapping against skin, his own roaring yell…
His teeth coming down hard on her mating gland.
He came to as he felt his knot swelling at the base of his cock. As Tessa whimpered trying to take it.
She threw her head back, brandishing the red bite mark and already purpling bruise on her neck, and whined: “Rhett…Can’t…”
He smoothed his hand up her sweat slicked side. Feeling like he just woke up from some nap he only meant to be thirty minutes but instead it was four hours. Not knowing what time or even year it was.
All he really understood was that Tessa Abernathy was wholly and completely his. And that was good.
“Yeah, y’can, sunshine,” Rhett finally spoke, whispering into her neck and peppering that bruise with kisses. “Y’were made f’me, ‘member? Made f’y’re Alpha. Ju’ lemme help ya.”
As his knot pressed in bit by bit, he moved his hand, which had somehow slipped out from beneath her, back between her legs. She whimpered at the touch to her swollen bundle of nerves, sensitive and abused, but it seemed to help. Her whimpers of pain turned to soft moans of pleasure. And when it finally settled inside her with a quiet pop — he felt her spasm around him once more. Forehead pressing into the mattress as she keened.
His hand slipped up and there was a bulge in her lower stomach. It made him shudder to think that was him.
A silence settled over them after that. Caught in the afterglow — at the moment too perfect to be broken. Rhett felt an overwhelming need to make sure she was comfortable. An itch he was desperate to scratch. Still locked inside her, he rolled them both onto their sides and grabbed the quilt from the end of the bed to cover their naked forms. Tessa nuzzles back into him easily, and she fit against his chest like she was made to be there.
And maybe she was.
“M’sorry,” he whispered, unable to hold his tongue forever.
“Huh?” Tessa replied, voice laced with sleep, like she just on the edge.
“I —” he lightly touched the bright red bite mark. “I didn’mean to…”
She sighed, something content and knowing. He could practically feel her smile. “I wouldn’t want anyone else.”
She fell asleep shortly after that. Rhett out of words and feeling exhausted himself. There would be more to discuss when they both woke up in the morning, that was sure. And there would be questions that needed answered from his family, who he was certain heard some of what went on tonight.
But right then, it didn’t matter. Right then he wrapped his Omega up in his arms and fell into the blissful arms of sleep.

Top 10 VLCC Weight Loss Programmes And Their Costs
Future Miss Pretty Me
Rewind a few years back. This is exactly what occurred to me.
I turned around as I heard someone calling me - 'Mini Aunty'. I was taken aback when the next-door neighbor's kid, just 2 years more youthful to me, mockingly called me Aunty. Hell! Life can't get harder for a 16 year old that had actually always rubbished the statement of being obese, thinking it's merely sign of health as her family puts it this way. His words echoed in my ears and also heart.
Being elevated in a Conventional South Indian family where being overweight simply indicated being chubby, food filled with ghee and scrumptious savories are bare basics, it was an unexpected jolt of reality that shook me- below I am just 2 months far from starting my college- time that I have been waiting for a very long time now and the extremely assumed of being this hefty me walking with the gates of college just to be mocked and also aggravated for how I looked, sent out shivers down my spine.
That extremely moment I understood gone are the days of being material as well as trying to be unaware of my looks and also health and wellness, I can not stand to lose out on fun of being appreciated, dating, as well as making relatives like a normal 16 years of age. And I likewise noticed last night, climbing up staircases is not a very easy job to me any longer. And newspapers these days are flogged with info on way of living conditions brought on by obesity, Diabetic issues, coronary heart problem, psychological diseases like medical depression and also lowered self-confidence to call some.
Tears welled up in my eyes as I assumed of my preferred brand-new life and also its stark comparison to my threat filled up existing life, yet luckily I have actually always been somebody that takes difficulties directly and places thorough effort to manage any scenario. Morphe x Jaclyn Hill Eyeshadow Palette Review
When I first saw this palette I was insanely excited for it, but it kept selling out before I could get my hands on it. But finally this last time I managed to get my hands on the Morphe x Jaclyn Hill eyeshadow palette. Which is like the perfect everyday palette. I'm probably going to be leaving this palette out on my counter to use it every day. Jaclyn took two years to perfect this palette and it honestly shows in the shadows. The palette has 35 shades for $38 plus shipping/handling with 1.98 oz of product in each pan. Originally they had the name on the plastic sheet from what I saw from people who got the first batches. But that was not included in mine palette so I had to reference the PDF Morphe has on there website to insert the names during the swatching section of my video.
First Impression, Tutorial, and Swatching Video
Swatches (Finger and Brush)
I know I did this in the video already but I wanted to do them once more and take a picture of each swatch. As I wanted to do have them in a better light since I filmed this at night and my camera didn't adjust the color correctly. I tried to fix the color in editing, but some of them still weren't perfect thus the second round of swatches in natural light. Of course, I did the swatches with both a brush and my finger as I wanted to make them as true as possible. I go back and forth on my opinion of finger swatches as they aren't honest since not everything you apply with your fingers. Contour, highlight, blush, eyeshadows, etc. However for lid colors I sometimes do use my fingers so that's why I really go back and forth on them. So if you're like me, I love when you get to see both to see the difference. So without further ado here are the swatches for a second time.
Each photo is one of the column the top swatch is the finger one and the bottom is by brush.
Descriptions of Shades From Jaclyn Hill
I am the worst at describing colors. Give me paint and I can recreate it, but don't have me try to describe it. So here are the descriptions from Jaclyn Hill that was published on Morphe's website for the eyeshadow palette. Which is basically from her video where she introduced the palette.
Enlight: An out-of-this-world, universal shade for brow bone and inner shadow magic.
Beam: Amp things up with this frosted version of Enlight, it’s great for deeper skin tones.
Silk Crème: Your transitional, creamy-matte crease color with yellow undertones.
M.F.E.O: Peach, matte and cool: made for each other (hence the name)
Faint: Love this princess shade. No matter how fair skin you are, this fiercely frosty shade goes great all over the lid.
Sissy: For the rose-gold queens out there, this super-girly shade was named after my sister.
Little Lady: Confession: I call my sister ‘little lady’ and this is her second fave color. Perfect to rock at the office since it’s not too gold or out there. It’s the perfect shimmery wash of neutral.
Creamsicle: OB-SESSED with this flattering yet daring color. Pop it into the crease to make the color of your eye’s pop.
Butter: Super creamy with a warm, terracotta undertone makes this an amazing shade for your crease color.
Pooter: For those of you not comfortable with super warm colors, this neutral chestnut shade, named after an inside family joke, is for you.
Pukey: Yes, I named a color Pukey. My favorite matte color in the whole palette. SO creamy. SO pigmented. The ultimate warm brown.
Hunts: Linda made this daring, boldly blendable shade happen. I love it because…it’s perfect. The creamiest shade in the palette. My fave shade of all-time.
Firework: Dare I say this is the most shimmering shade? It’s great for all over the lid and for creating a warm, smoky eye. Partner it up with any of the matte orange shades.
Queen: The perfect gold. I have nothing else to say.
Obsessed: I was looking to create a shade for the perfect smoky eye. This took forever to get right, but it’s perfect and I’m totally, you guessed it, Obsessed.
S.B.N.: One of my most-used, all-over-lid colors is this deep, pinky-bronze shade. It creates the perfect, smoky but natural look. S.B.N…N.B.D.
Hillster: God, I love this color all over the lid or on lower lash line. I wanted a good range in this palette, and this is the deepest warm shimmer we have to offer.
Roxanne: I named this after myself (my middle name is Roxanne). That may be narcissistic, but I don’t care. My subscribers know this is my favorite color in the world. I honestly use it every day on lower lash line or outer crease.
Jacz: An actual burgundy with great color payoff. These high-pigmented mattes go through lots of rounds to make them this super creamy.
Buns: This is Linda’s favorite crease color, but it took some time for it to grow on me. We removed it from the palette at least 5 times. I hated it at first, but now…obsessed. It’s a great everyday neutral shade for all skin tones.
Cranapple: A true cranberry shade perfect for all over the lid.
Royalty: I love it so much. The purplest of purples. A badass purple. No undertones. Just shimmery purple (I had to create one) that’s great to layer.
Twerk: The reason this color is in the palette? I hate blue. I wanted to be able to wear an awesome shade of blue and this is it. Bold, fun and totally wearable with major wow factor.
Hustle: For those of you not into warm shades, this is 100% cool with gunmetal, purple undertones.
Meeks: The best bronze out there (and named after one of my best friends, because that girl loves her bronze). Not too metallic, and all ages can rock it whether you’re 14 or 40.
24/7: Completely different formula than the rest of the palette: pressed glitter, baby. Apply with finger, or a very wet brush, for a sophisticated, fresh-from-the-runway look.
Chip: I use this shade all the time to smoke out outer corner and lower lash line. Creamy, smooth and highly pigmented. Win, win, win.
Mocha: SO chocolatey and super warm, perfect for deepening any eye look.
Pool Party: My favorite pop of color ever! Beautiful turquoise with flecks of glitter may seem over the top, but it’s not. It’s super wearable (just like a swimsuit).
Jada: Named after my niece since this is her fave color in the whole world. Very similar to Pool Party, but with a matte spin.
Diva: Bye-bye Christmassy green shades. I so wanted green in this palette, but a neutral one to wear all over lids and layer with warm reds…and not make you think of Santa.
Enchanted: This deep, matte green is Diva’s (and all the other green shades) partner in crime.
Central Park: I wanted every woman and man to have the option of a cool, matte brown.
Soda Pop: We were so excited to get this color perfect. So deep and so dark. You almost think it’s black, but it’s purple. And one of the most complementary shades for any eye color.
Abyss: Matte and black as hell. One of the blackest blacks I’ve seen. So hard to make black rock, but we did it.
Ingredients
Talc, Mica, Kaolin, Dimethicone, Tridecyl Trimellitate, Phenyl Trimethicone, Ethylhexyl Palmitate, Octyldodecyl Stearoyl Stearate, Capryl Glycol, Phenoxyethanol, Ethylhexylglycerin. May contain: Isononyl Isononanoate, Isostearyl Isostearate, Nylon-12, Polymethylsilsesquioxane, Magnesium Stearate, Silica, Titanium Dioxide (CI77891), Iron Oxide Black (CI77499), Iron Oxide Yellow (CI77492), Iron Oxide Red (CI77491), Hydrated Chromium Oxide Green (CI77289), Ultramarine Blue (CI77007), Ferric Ferrocyanide (CI77510), Chromium Oxide Greens (CI77288), Manganese Violet (CI77742), FD&C Red 40 AI Lake (CI16035), FD&C Yellow 5 AI Lake (CI19140), FD&C Blue 1 AI Lake (CI42090).
Overall Thoughts
I absolutely love this palette! I can for sure see myself reaching for this palette all of the time and will probably just have a permanent home on my bathroom counter rather than in my makeup collection drawers. These shadows blend so beautifully and are hella pigmented, which I love! Plus I love how there is a variety of colors that I can dip into to create any look I want to. I seriously recommend this palette, so if you would like it yourself I wish you the best of luck trying to get a hold of it before it gets sold out. That is if they release another round of it. So may the odds be ever in your favor. If you already have this palette, what is your favorite color from it? I'm leaning towards Hillster or Jacz at the moment.

Tumblr media Tumblr media
It is a truth universally acknowledged that Rhett Abbott had an astounding talent for putting his foot in his mouth. Even if he was with the person he knew best in the entire world. Even if she knew he was prone to it and could look past that it wasn’t truly what he meant. But Tessa knew he meant it this time. These were his true feelings, held in the palm of her hand. Warm and hard and aching.
She supposed his foot came to be in his mouth by saying anything at all. By grabbing her hand and urging her to touch him. It completely shocked her into silence. How else could she possibly react? She thought they would just lull themselves into a nice sleep eventually, maybe do some pillow talk where they made themselves laugh till their sides ached. Just like they used to do when they were kids. Then in the morning she would make breakfast and he would be on his way.
In the back of her mind, she was pretending. Like she had with her sisters so many times before when she was small. He was her husband coming home after a long day on the ranch. She made hot chocolate and they watched TV in the living room — snuggled up close. They were together. This was their house. This was their life.
But it wasn’t.
She was just playing house without her best friend knowing it.
Rhett was her best friend. He was there because she asked him to be. Because she didn’t like being alone. That entire cottage with just her in it with nothing to fill the space besides her own thoughts. Rhett always had been good at that. Filling her spaces in between. It was so easy to pretend with him. To think in the back of her mind that he would wrap his arms around her as she made the hot chocolate. That he would kiss the top of her head as they watched her stupid medical drama. She could picture it so clearly.
And yet, now that she was getting what she had nearly always wanted, she didn’t know what to do. All she really could do was stare wide eyed and chest heaving into Rhett’s face. Her entire body felt heavy and hot, her heart racing as her jaw clenched. But she didn’t pull away.
She took too long to say something, however.
“Shit — fuck — m’sorry,” Rhett muttered as he practically jumped up from the bed, covers tossed to the side haphazardly in his haste.
Tessa shot up in bed, watching him as he gathered the clothes he was wearing earlier and held them over his crotch. He pushed a hand through his hair as he backed away from her and towards the door. Some of the heaviness disappeared now that there was some distance between them. But her entire body still felt hot and covered in static.
“M’gonna…M’gonna go. M’sorry.”
“No!” she shouted, too loud for just the two of them as she got up from the bed too. “I — please don’”
All Rhett did was stand there, rooted to the spot as he swallowed thick and shifted from foot to foot. Eyes shifting to look anywhere but her as she approached him. Tucking her hair behind her ears, Tessa still didn’t know what to say. What could she possibly say to make this situation better?
“Could you…Could you jus’not do it tonight? Or — Or’s this been buildin’ f’r’a while?” she finally asked, hands threaded together as she looked up into his face bathed in moonlight.
He swallowed again, opened and closed his mouth a few times, then spoke quietly: “Long time, Tess. Long time.”
“Oh,” she breathed, turning away to gather her thoughts, then looking back to him with a smile. “God’dam’it, Rhett.”
“What?” he asked, chuckling himself with his brows furrowed in confusion.
Tessa licked her lips and said, “I’been in love with you since we’ere fourteen. I thought…I forgot abou’it sometimes. T’spare my own feelin’s, I guess. But — I’ll never forget when we watched The Grudge over at Laney’s house n’you held m’hand under that pillow the whole time ‘cause I’s terrified. Made…Made me realize I wanted t’hold y’r hand f’rever.”
Rhett dropped the clothes he was holding and stepped towards her. For a moment, she wasn’t sure what he was going to do. But then he was holding her by the cheeks and kissing her — soft and slow and full of everything he had been feeling for over a decade. His stubble scratched her chin but she didn’t even care. She was kissing her best friend. And it was perfect. Her hands smoothed up his chest and tugged at his t-shirt, pulled him in closer as she tilted her chin to deepen the kiss. Rhett took it in kind. Some smile she could feel against her mouth pulling on his lips as one hand dropped to curve around the back of her neck.
She pulled away, kissed him once, twice, more before she grinned up at him and asked: “So d’you love me too, or…?”
Laughing through his nose, he bumped his forehead with hers. “Yes. Yeah. Love you, sunshine.”
“Good,” she laughed softly before kissing him again.
And they continued to kiss as Rhett backed her up towards the bed, his hands hooking under her thighs as he climbed onto the mattress. He laid her down gently, breaking the kiss just to trail his lips down her neck. It felt like he was making up for lost time. Exploring everywhere now that he could. His hands quickly slipped up the hem of her shirt to feel the soft skin of her tummy. His lips found their way all over her throat and collarbone that was exposed from her top. It nearly made her laugh. Made that hot feeling in her skin burn even brighter.
How had she been so worried something more between them would ruin things? She already knew they drove each other crazy. She already knew all his likes and dislikes, his weird quirks, and the baggage he carried. But right then, she didn’t want to worry about that. She just wanted to be with Rhett. And all that that meant.
As he nuzzled at the crook of her neck, she slipped her hand between them and pressed her palm into that now slightly softened bulge in his pants. Rhett grunted as his hips jerked into her touch.
“We don’have t’do that if ya don’t wanna,” he mumbled into her ear before kissing the shell.
“I wanna,” she replied, pushing her fingers into his hair. “Been thinkin’bout you a long time, bubs.”
His eyebrows shot up. “Y’have?”
“Oh, geeze, this’s embarrassin’.” She tucked her face into the pillow, blush blooming on her cheeks. But Rhett was quick to turn her back to him with a gentle hand on her cheek. “I…Anytime I…Touched myself…Thought’a you a lot’a the time. You’r Justin McBride.”
“That bull rider from Nebraska?” He narrowed his eyes at her.
“That five-million dollar bull rider.” But when a certain look passed over Rhett’s face, Tessa was sure to hold his jaw and make him look her in the eye. “But who needs a million dollars? All I need’s you, bubs.”
“You sure?”
“Always have been.”
Tessa woke up that morning feeling better than she ever had. Rhett was by her side. Just on the edge of waking up with a pout on his face and his arm wrapped around her tight. It was how she wanted to wake up every day for the rest of her life. When he finally woke up, rolled over on his back with a big stretch, she placed herself on his bare chest. He was so warm, and his arms instantly serpentined around her shoulders.
Tracing that bullrider tattoo on his chest, she remembered snickering when he first showed it to her. She thought it was too big and dark and just on this side of silly. But now it was a part of him. A part of him she loved in spite of her dislike of the tattoo.
She loved him.
“Move in with me,” she whispered as his fingers danced up and down her arm.
“What?” It was his turn to snicker as he tried to look down at her.
Tessa picked herself up to look into his face. Hair falling down into his storm blue eyes. Those thin lips quirked in a small but beautiful smile. The stubble on his chin and cheeks. She could still see that five year old in him. The one who tipped over the bird feeder box so they could look at the baby ducks together. The one who bought Mario Party 4 just for her with all the money he saved up so they could play it together, even though he didn’t like it. The one who asked her to prom in his quiet way while they were studying together. The one who stood up for her when she couldn’t say no. The one who knew her favorite movie, food, vacation, book — everything.
So she repeated, softly: “Move in with me.”
“Movin’ things a li’l fast ain’t we?” he questioned with that same quiet smile.
“Pretty sure we’been takin’ things slow our whole lives, Rhett,” she replied, grinning widely. “So, whaddaya say?”
Rhett tucked a lock of hair behind her ear as he looked at her seriously, brows furrowed as he searched her for something she knew wouldn’t be there. “You sure? I…You sure y’wanna deal wi’me?”
“Pretty sure I’been dealin’ wi’ya my whole life,” she said with a grin and he rolled his eyes. “Yes, bubs. I — I wanna be with you all the damn time.”
She kissed him then. Soft and sweet. And when she pulled away, they were both smiling.
“I guess’ll move in with ya then.”
They both laughed as Rhett rolled her onto her back. Warm kisses turned passionate.

June Abernathy wanted to surprise her daughter after spending the night alone in her own place for the first time. She was proud of Tessa. She knew just how scary it could be moving out on your own. Even if it was just down the road. So she worked diligently half the morning while her husband tended to the ranch. And when the breakfast was ready, pancakes and sausage and fresh fruit, they packed it all up and drove to their daughter’s cottage.
There was a truck parked out front. June knew that truck. It was Rhett’s. Which didn’t surprise her much. Maybe Tessa invited him over for the day. June knew how much her daughter didn’t like being alone — and her go to to keep her company since she was small had been that Abbott boy.
The door was unlockd, which didn’t surprise her either. They lived out in the middle of nowhere. There was no sense of danger.
What June Abernathy didn’t notice, however, was that Rhett and Tessa were not in the living area. In fact, they were nowhere to be seen. She was too busy unpacking the breakfast things and telling her husband to set the table.
Too preoccupied by her own surprise to recognise the faint sounds that were coming from down the hall. The quiet moans, the soft giggles, the gasps of names.
No. She really didn’t recognize what was happening until she was outside her daughter’s bedroom door and knocking before pushing it open.
“Wake up, honey, we brought breakfast,” she said as she opened the door completely.
But her smile dropped when she saw what was going on inside. Tessa, completely naked, pulled up with her back against that Abbott boy’s chest. His hand was wrapped around her throat, teeth scraping against her jaw. His cock nestled deep inside her as she breathed out a moan.
Then Tessa opened her eyes.
“Ma!” she shrieked, scrambled to pick up the quilt from the end of the bed and cover herself up.
June didn’t stay long enough to see the look on Rhett’s face. Most likely mortified. She simply closed the door and scurried back down the hall. Her husband was just setting out the juice when he looked up to see his wife looking traumatized.
“Nate, we gotta go.”
“Why? What’s wrong?”
“Tessa has company.”

“Guys, I don’know about this…” Tessa sighed as she glanced warily down at the injection needle in her hand, filled with a blue liquid.
Her suppressant dose for the following day that she usually injected just before going to sleep. But now there she sat on her bed, rolling the syringe in her hand — filled with the thing she was always told would keep her safe — debating whether or not she should take it. Just because her friends had a semi-decent point:
It had been nearly a year since she had sex, and she needed it, desperately.
She felt like a spring wound too tight, ready to explode with all that built up energy and force. And no matter what she did, no matter how many new toys she bought and tried out, nothing helped. It just created a stronger itch, a stronger desire. To be well and truly fucked by someone else. Held in their arms and kissed and maybe even wanted for a night. But, yet again, no matter what she did, she couldn’t find the right person to hook up with. One night stands were never her thing, and living in a small town where everyone knew everyone and she went to high school with every guy around her age, made it difficult.
Well, she might have found someone she could see getting in bed with, but he was just a friend. Even if, for the past several months, every night when she touched herself she thought of him.
She knew you weren’t supposed to think of friends that way. But it was hard when that friend was none other than Rhett Abbott. The boy she had a crush on in high school but had only recently reconnected with. The man who, half the time, she couldn’t tell was flirting with her or not. Who looked so good in a pair of Wranglers and a stetson; rode bulls like an artist would paint. Who grinned at her like they shared some secret and blinked at her bashfully when she complimented him. How was she supposed to not think about him that way?
But it wasn’t just her lack of sex life that left her anxious and irritated most nights. It was that ever-present and gnawing feeling that there was something missing. Like there was some itch she couldn’t quite scratch. Like she left something behind and she couldn’t remember what or where. But she knew it was gone. Knew there was a hole where it should be. A gaping emptiness in her that she feared, one of these days, would consume her whole.
She knew, on some base instinct, what it was she was missing. What it was her biology craved and longed for. But it was something she was unsure if she’d ever be able to have.
“S’gonna guarantee y’get laid, that’s f’r sure,” Chessler replied from the video call on Tessa’s laptop she was on.
“Or I get torn t’pieces,” Tessa said.
“Oh, y’won’t get torn t’pieces!” Laney scoffed with a flick of her hand. “All them stories’re exagerated!”
Like you’d know, Tessa thought, resisting the urge to roll her eyes. It was difficult being the only Omega in her friend group. They were all Betas, they didn’t have to worry about heats or anything like that. They got to live normal lives for the most part. They didn’t have to worry if their supply was running low or get turned away from jobs just because of their biology. Jealousy, green and ugly, snagged at Tessa’s heart as she gripped the syringe tighter in her grip.
“We even know if any Alphas’re gonna be at the party?” Riley asked.
“Walker’ll be there, but ll’keep’im distracted.” Laney winked and the rest of them groaned.
“Pretty sure Cash n’his brother Trip’re comin’.”
“The Jenkin’s boys? Haven’t they been workin’ in Cheyenne?” Tessa questioned.
“I don’know tha’s just wha’I heard.” Chessler shrugged.
Tessa took a deep breath, moved the syringe to her other hand. “Trevor’ll prolly be there…”
Trevor Tillerson. She was with him for a few months, the last man to ever touch her. And if she could go back in time and slap her younger self for getting with him, she would. He seemed nice at first. Made her feel special and showered her with gifts. That was, until he figured out she was an Omega. Then suddenly it was all pressure to get off her suppressants and expectations for her to submit to him like the Omega she was — like the Alpha he was. She broke it off and he got mad. It opened up something deep and terrifying within her to wonder what he would do if he caught her off her suppressants and possibly in a heat.
“N’so’ll Rhett,” Riley pointed out with a knowing grin.
“Yes! Rhett Abbott! Oh, s’perfect!” Laney squealed.
“Guys, we — we don’even know f’r sure if he’s an Alpha,” Tessa said, her entire face feeling hot as she looked down at her injection needle again.
“Babe, there’s no way he’s not. Have y’seen’im?”
“Yeah, no Beta’s that confident or has that kinda…Presence.”
“S’just that…He’s never mentioned it…” she replied.
“Maybe he’s the type t’keep it to himself. Plenty people like that.”
“Not everyone’s a complete dick about it like Trevor.”
“I guess, but…I don’know, m’just scared of what’ll happen,” Tessa said.
“Look, how ‘bout this,” Riley jumped in, “You don’take y’r suppressant tonight n’go t’the bonfire tomorrow with all those Omega hormones lurin’ the boys in, n’we’ll make sure nobody unsavory gets anywhere near ya. Deal?”
Laney and Chessler nodded in agreement. And while Tessa was still scared, still terrified that it would only end in disaster like her parents had warned so many times before, she agreed. Set her suppressant aside with a dramatic flourish so her friends could see over the video call.
What could possibly go wrong?

She felt fine for most of the day. Even normal. Going about her usual routine with only a knot of worry growing and twisting in her stomach. Mostly about what would happen that night at the bonfire, when she knew she would be surrounded by Alphas and Betas alike. She didn’t feel a heat coming on, though she hadn’t dealt with one since she was a teenager.
Tessa remembered what it felt like, despite the passage of time. Despite only experiencing it once before her parents took her to the doctor and got her on suppressants. The signs and symptoms burned into her. The memories of those days locked in her bedroom etched into her mind.
It was mostly confusion. Hatred of her own self for being this way instead of normal like all her friends. Pain and just wanting it to stop. Some instinct from deep within calling out for her Alpha to come and help her. Make it go away. Knowing that everything would be good when he was there. And it still brought some sort of embarrassment and shame to her heart that even back then, the face that came to her when she begged for her Alpha to come, was Rhett’s.
The pain started as her sister was driving her to school. Her breasts felt sore and swollen, a swirling in her gut that she couldn’t quite explain. Shiloh asked if she was alright as she pulled up in front of the school, and Tessa assured her everything was fine. Just some odd pains that she really didn’t feel like discussing with her sister in the school parking lot. It would probably go away in a few minutes.
But it didn’t. It only grew worse. By third period biology Tessa was squirming in her seat. She felt desperate for any sort of friction, everything felt swollen and wet. Hot all over and head spinning so much she couldn’t concentrate on the lesson. Her stomach was even beginning to cramp, jolts of pain with her mind screaming empty at her.
She didn’t understand, she didn’t understand.
And it certainly wasn’t helping that Rhett Abbott kept looking back at her every five seconds with a hungry look in his eye.
After class, she called her mother in tears. Trying to explain without going into too many details how she was feeling and that she just wanted to go home. A bleak understanding took over her mother’s voice when she told Tessa to go to the nurse and wait for her to come get her. Tessa didn’t like the sound of it. Was she dying?
She went to the nurse and again tried to tell her what was happening. Stumbling over words and symptoms even as she felt sweat sticking to her shirt and her head became more and more clouded. Stuffed up like there was nothing else in there besides empty and Alpha. Again, understanding took over the nurse’s face and Tessa felt a sense of dread mix in with everything else as she was directed to take a seat.
The nurse said something about making a call but Tessa couldn’t really hear her. Not when her heart was practically beating in her ears and she was trying desperately to hide the fact that she was rubbing her thighs together — trying to find some relief.
But she looked up, startled and afraid, when the door to the nurse’s station swung open.
And Rhett Abbott stood there staring at her with wide eyes, almost like he was shocked he was even there himself. Hair cropped short with a few curls dangling over his forehead, a line in it like he had been wearing a hat and been yelled at to take it off. He held a backpack with one strap on his shoulder. Lanky and tall and unaware of the fact as he took up nearly the entire doorway.
They looked at one another for a moment. Tessa with her chest heaving and her vision going fuzzy, another cramp going through her when she caught some scent in the air. Leather and wet earth. It made something inside her ache. Made her hands itch to reach out for him, somehow knowing he could make everything better but not understanding why or how.
“M’sorry, I don’...” he trailed off as he took a step forward.
There was that smell again. So familiar, so calming — and yet she had to grip her stomach as it cramped. A whimper tumbled past her lips as she felt the first tears slip out. Rhett made to drop his backpack, take the last few strides to cross the room to her.
But then the nurse came back into the room and gasped at the sight of him.
“Rhett Abbott you get outta here right now! Out!”
It was a memory she didn’t like to think back on. That made her cheeks heat and her palms sweat and something inside her ache. But still that scent came to her from time to time. Leather and wet earth. Rhett, something inside her whispered every time and she had to force it down. No. Nothing ever came of it. He wouldn’t even really look at her when she came back to school a week later and hadn’t talked to her up until a few months ago. She wondered if he even remembered that day. When they both somehow knew he could fix what was wrong with her.
Maybe that was why she tried to deny that he was an Alpha. Maybe that was why she feared going to the bonfire in the state she was in, knowing he would be there.
What if he got pulled away from her again? What if he just rejected her like she had heard Alphas do before? The worry and fear grew inside her, an open pit she was on the edge of falling into.
Riley came and picked her up for the bonfire around eight. It was a perfect summer evening. The sun already starting to dip between the trees but the sky still a brilliant shade of blue. The air was just beginning to cool from sweltering hot to a more bearable temperature. Perfect for a bonfire out in the middle of someone’s back field.
“Ya woulda looked cute n’a dress s’all m’sayin’,” Riley commented as they pulled out of Tessa’s driveway and out onto the main road.
Tessa looked down at her old pair of jeans and quarter zip. Something comfortable when she felt distinctly uncomfortable was at least sort of helpful. She wasn’t about to wear a dress to a bonfire, something she would never do normally, just because she was looking to get laid. Or claimed? Or fucked? Or…Something else she couldn’t quite put her finger on?
“N’freeze my ass off? No thank you,” she replied lightly with a smile.
Riley gave her a sidelong glance, curiosity bubbling in her deep brown eyes. “So…How ya feelin’?”
“I — I really can’t tell,” she sighed, “I mostly feel nervous. But I can’tell if m’just doin’ that thing where y’give y’rself symptoms? Like I expect ‘em t’be there so there they are?”
“Like what?”
“Like my tits hurt.” Riley laughed and she had to shut her up with a playful smack to the arm. “M’bein’ serious! They’re sensitive!”
“What, like y’re pregnant?” Riley chuckled again.
“No, not like that.”
But the thought, the thought of being pregnant and filled, brought one screaming idea to the forefront: empty. An unconscious hand moved to rest over her stomach. Just like when she got her first heat back in eleventh grade. With a deep breath, she shoved it down deep inside herself. Smashed it up into a box and locked it up tight.
She wasn’t going into heat. She wasn’t going into heat. She wasn’t going into heat. It was just one missed suppressant dose. Surely it couldn’t do that much damage.
“You do smell different,” Riley commented.
Tessa looked over at her with furrowed brows. “How can y’tell?”
“I may be jus’a Beta but I can still smell the…You coming off ya. S’kinda strong.”
“Doesn’t smell bad, does it?”
“No! S’like uh — like — this’s gonna sound weird, don’judge me — like early mornings and honeysuckle,” Riley said with a chuckle.
“That’s…Oddly specific.”
“You asked!”
Tumblr media
The bonfire was at Olivia Barlow’s family ranch, out in their south pasture. A small thing that made quality, pricey beef that got shipped all over the country. And there were at least twenty other cars there by the time Riley and Tessa pulled in.
Probably more people than Olivia told her parents would be there. But it wasn’t like they were going to know or mind. They were miles away from the house and they were all adults. Or at least pretended like they were during business hours. Now though, now it was like they were all back in high school. Passing around coolers and kegs of beer and dancing to country music blaring from someone’s sound system in their truck. A classic Wabang bonfire if Tessa ever saw one.
By the time Riley and Tessa joined their other friends closer to the massive fire with grey smoke billowing up into the darkening sky, they already had chilled drinks pressed into their hands. And Tessa had nearly forgotten about her suppressants and her heat and the soreness in her breasts.
And the beginning aching feeling between her legs.
That was, until Rhett joined their group. Grinned at her all shy and small and gave her another drink because he saw hers was empty. Stood close to her side as he listened to the long time friends chat and laughing when he would catch Tessa’s eye. Until, somehow, it was just the two of them. Standing by the fire and talking about games he had been playing recently and shows she liked. About their days on the high school rodeo team and memories they didn’t even realize they shared.
It astounded her how easy it was to talk to Rhett. How naturally their conversations flowed and how normal it felt to stand so close to him. To feel the heat coming off of him and feel his breath, like cheap beer and chewing tobacco, against her face. And she didn’t even mind it. She felt safe and cared for and thought of when she was with Rhett. And she couldn’t help the yearning and longing and love that welled up inside her as she looked up into his deep blue eyes illuminated by the fire’s glow — half shadowed by the bill of his trucker-cap.
“You smell nice,” he suddenly muttered, voice deep and graveled as he flashed her a small smile.
A heat bloomed in her cheeks. “Thanks.”
“S’like honeysuckle,” he went on, narrowed his eyes at her slightly. “S’it new?”
“N-No. M’not — M’not even wearin’ anythin’.”
Rhett grunted at that, those cobalt eyes flicking down then up again as he looked at her. As he took a step closer. “I’member that smell.”
Leather and wet earth. The scent of it filled her lungs and made her breathe clearly for what felt like the first time in years.
The heat spread everywhere. Like she was standing in the fire and didn’t care if she burned. Her mind became blissfully blank as she stared up at him. As a flood of arousal soaked her panties. And she watched, unable to move in fear of breaking the spell, as Rhett’s eyes darkened. Like he could sense it. His hand reached for her and she stepped just that little bit closer.
“Holy shit! Tess Abernathy’s about to put out ladies n’gentlemen!” A loud, boisterous voice exclaimed as an arm was thrown around Tessa’s shoulders.
And the spell was broken.
Rhett snapped his head up to look at who was now hanging all over her. Eyes darkened by something else now. She knew who it was. She didn’t have to look over to know.
“Fuck off, Trevor,” Rhett hissed.
“Oh, come on now, Abbott. Jus’a little fun,” Trevor replied, squeezing Tessa in closer to his side. “Isn’t that right, little Omega?”
Tessa felt tears sting the backs of her eyes as she looked around. Everyone was trying to just stick to their own conversations, but she could tell they were looking over. Glancing and whispering and talking. It was like the fire was inside her very chest. She tried to pull away from Trevor but he just pulled her in tighter. Arm nearly curled around her neck.
And she couldn’t help but feel some shame when Rhett glanced at her when he said the word Omega.
“What? You didn’know?” Trevor laughed, “Big Alpha like yourself an’you can’t just smell it on her? She fucking reeks. Practically screamin’ f’r someone t’breed her.”
Ashes and deer hide — Trevor’s scent that always made her feel nauseous.
With his arm around her neck, Rhett looking at her like that, and Trevor’s scent choking her lungs — she felt like she couldn’t breathe. Could feel a cramp beginning to form in the pit of her stomach. The world turning hazy as her thoughts blurred and blended together. She just needed to get away. Needed to find some place alone and secluded so she could try to breathe and maybe get ahold of Riley to take her home.
She managed to slip out from under Trevor as Rhett charged forward. Poking a finger into his chest and grumbling out something about just shutting his mouth and leaving her alone.
The cramp, powerful and immobilizing, finally overcame her as she stumbled away from the two of them. Into the small patch of trees in the Barlow’s south pasture, just outside the edge of the bonfire’s circumference. The sounds of the party faded into background noise as she tumbled past the thicket line. Where a larger tree stood just beyond that she found purchase against.
The rough bark was grounding against her palms. Brought her back to her body and what needed to be done. She felt like she was boiling. Between her legs felt slick and swollen, desperate for attention. Her heart beat rapidly inside her chest and even she knew, from the way eyes followed her as she stalked away, that people knew. They knew she was an Omega about to start her heat.
And she was doomed.
Turning, she leaned back against the thick trunk and took in a deep, shaking breath. She wasn’t in a full heat yet. But she was just on the precipice. Anything could set her off. She needed to get home and fast. Hopefully, if she took her suppressant and just laid down for the night the symptoms would subside. If only her hands would stop shaking enough to pull her phone out of her pocket.
“There you are, little Omega,” Trevor called out quietly, followed by the breaking of branches.
Her head snapped up to see him walking slowly towards her. Devilish smile on his face as he flicked his blond hair out of his eyes. He was wearing some ridiculous “Western” purple button up with a shining belt buckle he had not earned. Another cramp ripped through her abdomen as his scent filled her nostrils.
“No,” she managed to mutter out as she pointed weakly back at the party.
“No? You can’t be serious right now. You need me,” he replied, still continuing closer.
And all she could do was try to back herself further up against the trunk. Praying by some miracle the bark would open up and swallow her whole. The closer he got, the heavier it felt she was becoming. She sagged against the tree. Her mind fogged of nothing but empty and Alpha. Trevor could fill her. Trevor was an Alpha.
“Y’re about t’go into heat, aren’t you?” Trevor questioned, so close now all she could smell was him, could feel his breath on her face. “Need me t’knot you up n’knock you up, don’t you? Let me be your Alpha, baby.”
Yes. “No.”
The single word came out slurred, slow and heavy on her tongue. Trevor just chuckled and pulled in close. Put one hand on her waist as he leaned down, mouth brushing over that swollen gland in her neck that made her shudder. Suddenly, she was taken back to when the two of them were like this before. When he got tired of asking and nearly bit into her mating gland. Nearly forced her to be with him for the rest of her life — against her will. She had screamed then and she opened her mouth to do it again. But it was like her muscles wouldn’t quite work. The sound wouldn’t quite come up and out of her throat. All she could manage was some broken squeak as she pushed weakly at his chest.
“Don’fight it, you know you want it.”
She did want it. She wanted to be filled and touched and knotted and just full for once in her life. But she didn’t want it from Trevor Tillerson. She tried to scream again but still, nothing came out besides another garbled no that Trevor didn’t heed and a few tears.
Then suddenly, Trevor was yanked away from her. Leaving her cold and barely able to hold herself up as her knees buckled, her back slipping down the rough bark.
Leather and wet earth. Rhett.
She looked up just in time to see Rhett push Trevor away, the two of them chest to chest as Rhett backed him away from her.
“You touch her again n’I’m gonna put you in the fucking ground,” Rhett seethed as he stared Trevor down.
A gush of arousal soaked her panties as she whimpered, hand gripping her stomach as another cramp hit her at full force. She was panting and doubled over and clawing at the tree to try and stabalize herself. But it was no use.
Rhett looked over his shoulder at her, eyebrows furrowed in concern. His nostrils flared as his eyes darkened beneath his cap, something like understanding taking over his features.
And Trevor laughed. “You can smell it now can’t ya? That little Omega’s in heat n’somebody needs t’claim her before the Jenkins brothers get over here and tear her limb from limb. N’she’s mine. Always has been, always will be.”
Turning back to look at him with eyebrows pulled low and a curl in his lip, Rhett practically snarled before he pulled back his fist and got Trevor with his knuckles square in the jaw. Trevor retaliated with a growl, tackling Rhett in the chest. But Rhett didn’t go down, he only stumbled back a few steps, and another few when Trevor’s fist connected with his side. But with another shove and another punch to the face, Trevor was flat on his back, staring up at the stars with a groan.
Rhett turned to Tessa immediately.
She was still leaning back against the trunk of the tree, chest heaving as she clutched at her stomach. She could barely think, thoughts all consumed by the slick between her legs and the empty feeling in her chest, but someone was coming. Probably Cash and Trip, maybe even Walker, lured in by the scent of her heat. Her heat that had been set off completely, brought on by an Alpha defending her.
Rhett Abbott defended her. Protected her. He was so good. A good Alpha. He would treat her well. He would make everything better, just like she always knew he would. He would make everything alright…
“Tess, you okay?” Rhett asked quietly.
She didn’t even realize he had moved from standing over Trevor. Not until one of his big hands cupped her cheek and forced her to look up into his face. His expression crumbled at the sight. A soft groan slipped past his lips. No doubt her face was flushed. Her eyes half-lidded and pupils blown to consume all of their usual blue. He squeezed her cheek just a little harder, drew in just a fraction closer.
“Fuck, sunshine…” he whispered under his breath.
Her hands, against her own will, shot out to him. Took hold of his waist and tried to pull him in closer. Get him inside her skin. Alpha, who would make everything good.
“Please,” she heard herself say, but did not realize her mouth had opened. “Hurts.”
Rhett groaned again, ripped off his hat so he could press his forehead against her own. “I know, I know. You got…Got any’a that medicine with ya?”
“N-No, I didn’t think…” Her throat swelled with tears before she could finish, tears blurring her vision as she let out the smallest sob.
She didn’t think this would happen. She didn’t want this to happen. If she could, she would slap herself for agreeing to this scheme. Just to get laid. Another sob slipped out of her as Rhett shushed her.
Her stomach cramped again and she fell forward into his chest. He caught her with ease, unintentionally putting one thigh between her spread legs to help keep her upright. A whimper escaped her at the sudden contact, her hips wriggling against all logical thought to get more friction. To just make the pain stop.
“Fuck, this isn’t how I wanted t’do this,” Rhett muttered as his hands fell to her hips.
No, no, no, no, he doesn’t want me, she thought. And it took all of her remaining will power to stop her minute movements, a whine punching out of her as she looked back into his face. “M’sorry, m’sorry —”
A twig snapped somewhere to the west, from the direction of the party, and Rhett hunched over her further. Nearly curled around her as he pressed a hand into the tree bark and leaned in close to that swollen gland in her neck. From his behavior, other Alphas and Betas were coming. Drawn in by her scent or just curious as to what the commotion was all about. Either way, she didn’t want to be seen like this. In the middle of a heat, in the middle of nowhere, with an Alpha she was sure was about to reject her.
“M’not gonna bite ya, promise,” he whispered, before tilting his head, presenting the side of his own strong neck to her. “Just gon’mark ya. Let everyone know to fuck off.”
In a moment, she was overwhelmed by his scent. It filled her lungs, her pores, her very soul. He scent marked her. Let the world know she was his and his only. At least for the night. Rhett growled as he shoved in closer to her, head turning to sink his teeth into the hinge of her jaw. A tiny scrap of his canines that left her moaning. Alpha Alpha Alpha. It made her head spin and her knees fail her once more. Her hips dropped even harder onto his thigh, and she moaned as he guided her to move against him. Not tentative and trying to be impreceptible, but purposeful rolls against his jean clad leg. It was like ice on burns as she threw her head back and gripped tightly at his shirt.
“Wanted this t’be your choice,” he muttered, mostly to himself.
“W-What?” she asked, some clarity returning to her as the ache was eased between her legs.
“Tess, I’ve been thinkin’ about you n’y’r heat — n’y’r smell’ve honeysuckle n’early morning air since I’s seventeen,” he gruffed out, lips pressed to her temple. “You…I think y’were always meant t’be my Omega n’I just — after meetin’ you again — fuck, I wanted t’take it slow.”
In response, she whined wantonly, openly. High in her throat with her head thrown back and hips working even faster against his leg. He wants me, he wants me, he wants me.
“Y-Your Omega,” she stuttered out with a breathless smile.
Rhett grinned back at her, nudged his nose with her own. “Yeah. Mine.”
More rustling from the west. And Rhett snapped his head up to look at who was intruding on them. Teeth practically bared as he blocked her from view. Tessa ducked in close to his chest, trying to hide. Her hips stopped moving on instinct. Embarrassment and thoughts of her Alpha protecting her flooding her veins.
“Fuck off,” he growled to whoever it was.
“Shit, Abbott got here first,” the distinct voice of a Jenkins brother said, most likely to the other.
“S’not too late, y’could just pass’er off when y’re done with her. Let us have a turn,” the other Jenkins said, “She smelled real fuckin’ pretty before you covered it up.”
“I said fuck off, she’s mine,” Rhett repeated on a bark, voice echoing through the trees.
“Alright, alright, okay. We’ll back off.”
Rhett turned his attention back to her, hand tilting her face up to look at him again with the softest expression she didn’t think he was capable of. Eyes big and blue as the near nightime sky. A piece of hair he now kept long dangled in front of his face. She wanted to push it back, knowing he didn’t like it in his eyes. But her limbs wouldn’t cooperate. She could barely lift her arm from his waist before it fell against his chest.
“We need t’get you outta here,” he whispered, calloused fingers slipping down to massage gently into her swollen gland. “Somewhere safe.”
“Home?” she mumbled back.
“I don’know if y’re gonna be able t’make it all the way home, sunshine. We could go t’my place? S’close — five minutes. If y’re okay wi’that.”
His place. Surrounded by his smell and his things and him. Tessa was nodding before she knew she even had an answer. And Rhett smiled as he pressed his lips to her burning forehead. Then he scooped her up into his arms like she weighed nothing, head tucked into the crook of his neck, and he carried her away.

what if tessa was a princess and rhett was the knight she fell in love with...
The summer castle was under siege. Enemy forces were just outside the gates, amassed to plunder and pillage and take Princess Tessa captive. She was not the heir to the throne, but she was an excellent bargaining chip in gaining the power they so desperately thought they wanted.
She raced from her chambers, holding her skirts in one hand and her prayer beads in the other. One bead for each of the Four Faiths that she prayed to for protection.
"Come, Your Highness! We must get you away from here!" her Crownsguard shouted as the castle delved into chaos, terrified screams and the distant rumble of catapults hitting their marks.
He pointed down a hall she knew led to a back entrance outside the castle gate. She could escape what she knew their evil plots to be. But as she looked around at the huddled servants, the crying commoners stuffed into the banquette hall...And thought of that lowly knight she knew would be stationed in the southern parapet, she couldn't do it.
"What about them?" Princess Tessa asked, gesturing to her people.
The people who trusted her to protect them.
"What of them?" her Crownsguard replied.
"They will be slaughtered! I cannot leave them to perish!"
She could not leave him. That lowly knight who called her by her first name and first name only. Who walked with her through the gardens under the guise of her protection. Who came to her chambers at night and removed his armor just for her. Who spoke to her so tenderly. Who loved her as herself - not a princess.
"There is nothing that you can do, Your Highness." Her Crownsguard gestured down the hall more fervently. "Please. Let us away before it is too late."
But it was too late. Another loud boom resounded through the castle. It made the very earth shake. Princess Tessa regained her balance as she clutched her prayer beads with new vigor. Then she ran to the window...
Only to see the outer wall crumbled, and the southern parapet half-standing.
Please, please, please.
Princess Tessa ran from the banquette hall, her Crownsguard screaming after her and trying his best to catch up in his full armor. But she was faster. Always had been. There were soldiers standing in ranks in the lower bailey - terrified men fifteen and older with spears or swords shoved into their hands. Trembling in suits of armor that didn't really fit. The enemy was fast approaching from the hole they had made in the outer wall. Tall men in dark armor ran at those inexperienced farmers with all that they had.
Only none of them expected for the princess they were fighting for to be running through the battle itself.
A few of the enemy soldiers watched as she ran through the lower bailey. Her silken skirts billowed in the breeze and her hair flowed in ringlets behind her - her tiara lost somewhere and she didn't even care. Princess Tessa ran right into the enemy, but none of them stopped her. They were just soldiers, they didn't know what the princess looked like. All of them, including their leader, expected her to be under lock and key in the holdfast.
She ran through rubble and dead bodies and her sworn enemy until she made it to what remained of the southern parapet.
Men in dark armor ran around her, towards the fight, but all she could see were the knights in the light gold armor of her people lying dead amongst the ancient, fallen stones. She rubbed her thumb over her prayer beads and began to look for her lowly knight.
Please, please, please prove I'm right.
Bloodied faces. Broken bones. None of them were her lowly knight. Maybe he wasn't stationed at the southern parapet after all. But there, on top of that pile of rubble, was a golden-clad form with her favor tied around his wrist. Sickly green arrows stuck out of his chest. He lay completely still.
And please, please, please don't bring me to tears when I just did my makeup so nice.
Princess Tessa climbed the pile of rubble. Dust still hung in the air. Her dress ripped and she didn't even notice. His helmet had come off at some point, beautiful brown hair hanging just below his ears. His eyes were closed. A bit of blood clung to the corner of his mouth. His sword was still clutched in his hand.
"Rhett," she gasped his name as she collapsed to her knees at his side.
Cradling him like she had so many times before, she drew him to lay in her lap. But his chest didn't move with each of his steady breaths. That small, kind smile did not grace his face. Her hands, dirtied and bleeding from moving rubble, clutched at him wherever she could reach. Her lowly knight. The man who saw her. Her tears made a small noise as they dropped against his armor. The man she loved.
Her prayer beads were nowhere to be found - and she didn't need them to pray to the gods.
"H-Heartbreak is one thing..." she tried to start, but stuttered on her tears. With a breath, she started again: "My ego's another...I beg you, don't embarrass me, motherfuckers...Please, please...Please! Please, please, please prove I'm right! Don't...!"
She could not speak anymore. Her tears choked the rest of the words from her throat. All she could do was hold her love as tight as her strength would let her and bury her face into his neck. Her tears wetted his skin, her rasping wails like that of the damned echoed against what was left of the stone over the din of battle. She knew her unspoken prayers would reach the gods she had always been so faithful to.
They wouldn't abandon her now.
Sir Rhett took a gasping breath. He jerked up into her as he took in great lungfuls of air. Princess Tessa pulled away from him to look into his dirty, blood-stained face. Blue eyes like a stormy sea stared back at her as he began to hold her back. Gauntleted hands clutching her waist as confusion filled his face. There were still arrows sticking out of his torso but it didn't even matter. He was alive. He was alive.
The gods had listened. Her prayers had been answered.
"Rhett," she whispered his name as tears and a smile fought on her countenance, hands cupping his stubbled cheeks like something holy.
"Tessa," he whispered back, glancing around at the scene, "Where...?"
But it was too late. A pair of hands grabbed the princess around the shoulders and lifted her from her love. She fought and screamed but it was no use against their strength. Rhett tried to get up, tried to save her, but his body felt foreign to him, like he was just waking up from a sleep too deep. Like he was paralyzed. But then an armored foot was planted on his chest and he couldn't have gotten up if he tried.
"Thank you, for making the princess so easy to capture," a dark, malicious voice rasped before Tessa was carried away, thrashing and shouting his name all the while.
And it wasn't until the fighting was done and silence filled the castle that Rhett was finally able to stand. That he was able to tighten the blue favor around his wrist. That he was able to take his sword and break the rods of every arrow lodged in his chest with one fell swoop.
The gods answered Princess Tessa's prayer - and he was going to make it worth their while.

Rhett hooked his forefinger beneath her chin and her breath hitched in her throat. Got caught on something like yearning as he wiped at her chin with his thumb. The edge of those rough calluses brushing against her bottom lip.
It was everything she wanted when she was fifteen. He wanted her. Looked down at her now with blue eyes so soft and wondering, mouth ticked up in some smirk only slightly cocky. He swiped his thumb over her chin a second time, pulled in closer to her, made it feel like he was the only other person there. The sounds of chattering children and cars as they drove by were drowned out by the rushing sound in her ears. The pit in her stomach burst into flames, roaring and all-consuming as she felt the heat coming off of Rhett’s body. So close. So wanting.
He wanted her. She wanted him back. Even after what happened at the bonfire. With his laugh so soft and smell of freshly ground feed and open sincerity. And wasn’t that everything she desired? To want and be wanted in return?
But just like that, the moment was over. He retracted his hand and pulled away from her. Tessa looked up from the bucking bronco on his shirt to his face. Some fear there she recognized from the general store.
“M’sorry ‘bout las’night. I think y’re one helluva girl and I just…M’sorry I’made ya uncomfortable, s’all. Wasn’t my intention.”
His mouth opened and closed, those crystalline blue eyes widening as he stared at her. He thought he messed up again. Made her uncomfortable. That she would bolt from him again at any second. But there was no room for fear. No frigid wind to put out the flame. She didn’t know what had changed. Maybe it was seeing a side of Rhett that was entirely unexpected to her. That he would apologize for coming on too strong. That he would take his niece out for ice cream and watch Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles with her. That he would reveal to a girl he couldn’t remember the name of a week ago that he used to pretend he was a cowboy in his front yard. Whatever it was, this didn’t feel fleeting, in the moment.
With Rhett, right now, it felt complete.
And sorrow may have still been inevitable, in her experience it surely was, but it was a risk she was willing to take.
So she opened her mouth and spoke quietly, “D’you get it?”
“Uh-huh,” he muttered back, a relieved smirk on his face as he licked his thumb clean. “Tastes good.”
But then he was leaving. Gathering his niece under his arm and giving Tessa a reluctant goodbye with a sad kind of smile. And she let him go.
Unconsciously, she reached up and touched her chin, her bottom lip. She could still feel his touch against her skin. Warm and rough and so gentle all at once. Something she hadn’t felt since high school fluttered around in her stomach as she grinned beyond her control. Bit her lip to try and hide it as she felt her cheeks heat. Just from the memory of being touched by him — of being the center of his attention.
It was everything her fifteen year old self dreamed of. Wrote about in her diary she still had tucked away on a shelf back home. Somewhere deep inside, she could even feel that teenage girl squealing and giggling and kicking her feet.
But was it what her twenty-three year old self wanted? Dreamed of? Wanting to be wanted was not the same as wanting. As desiring to be around someone all the time and longing for them to know the innermost parts of her like the back of their hand. To know the innermost parts of them in return, no matter how messy. To see it and love it and want to build with it. With them. With Rhett? She didn’t know.
Her life was complicated and busy. Haunted by a living ghost of who she would become. Determined to change her fate. And yet terrified to do it. Her efforts so far had led to nothing but understandable heartbreak and defeat. Too many schedule changes and cancellations. Not enough time spent with the person she thought she could maybe desire if given long enough. But she was never given long enough.
She was never enough to try for. To stick it out and wait and hope. Would Rhett be willing to wait? To try? Just to be with her? His whispered reputation around bar tables and over the back of salon chairs wasn’t promising. According to Laney, he’s slept with more women than she can count. Warm bodies to scratch an itch and satisfy a carnal desire and then left with empty promises of a phone call. To Tessa, it sounded like a lonely existence. One she wasn’t sure she entirely believed either. He seemed too kind and too sincere for it to be the whole truth.
“M’sorry ‘bout las’night. I think y’re one helluva girl and I just…M’sorry I’made ya uncomfortable, s’all. Wasn’t my intention.”
Someone whose sole intention was to sleep with her wouldn’t say that. Wouldn’t go so far to apologize in person and then keep talking to her after. Reveal secret pieces of himself to her.
Rhett Abbott was turning out to be far more confusing than she thought he ever could be. The boy she crushed so hard on in high school she cried over it. The bull rider who forgot her name. The man who invited her to bonfires and came on too strong and listened. A puzzle with pieces so jagged and random they surely didn’t fit together. But some part of her was determined to figure it out.
Even if it meant breaking her own heart in the process.
“That y’r boyfriend’r somethin’?” a cracking voice asked suddenly.
Tessa jumped as she looked over to see Wyatt sitting down beside her on the bench. Shaggy black hair falling in his eyes  — she needed to get him in for a haircut soon. If he even let her. He was shorter for his age, scrawny with bones sticking out even though he ate enough to feed three people most days. He looked pleased that he had been able to scare her as he settled into his seat.
“No,” she replied, hand over her heart as if that would stop its rapid beating. “Rhett’s a friend. His niece Amy n‘ Jace’re in the same class.”
Wyatt didn’t respond. Suddenly disinterested as he poked his thin fingers into the holes in the metal table. Jace sat on the bench seat beside them, possibly pretending his spoon was an airplane and his empty ice cream bowl was either a target or a boat to land on.
Tessa looked over her shoulder to see Colton still across the street with all his friends. Laughing and attempting tricks on his skateboard. She turned back to Wyatt. “Why aren’t ya with Colton n’them?”
“They…They didn’really talk t’me, so…”
She had to stop herself from tsking, from reaching over and pushing his hair out of his eyes and laying a comforting hand on his shoulder. She knew this was going to happen. They were all older than Wyatt by several years. All high schoolers while he was still in middle school. At least they hadn’t made fun of him or teased him. At least he didn’t say they did, anyway.
It was hard to make friends while living in the Boys’ Home. Regimented schedules and fairly strict policies about any of the boys being out of the house on their own. Tessa knew it was for their own good. Living in the Home made for a safe space for them to live and learn and grow. A place where their needs could be met and problems could be solved. A place where she hoped each of them felt cared for and loved. Despite the hindrances to their social lives.
“Wanna play finger football?” she asked, eyebrows raised as she took the ice cream cone wrapper she was going to throw away and began folding it into a triangle.
Wyatt shrugged. “Sure.”
“Can I play?” Jace quickly jumped in to ask, dropping his spoon with a clatter.
“You can keep score f’r now,” she replied as she finished folding the wrapper. “Play the winner when we’re done.”
They played for a few minutes. Wyatt beat her soundly at the game that was really all hand-eye coordination (of which Tessa severely lacked), and then he beat Jace too. Who grumbled at his loss, lip sticking out as he set his chin down on his arms crossed on top of the table. And Tessa smiled when Wyatt offered to give him a few pointers when they got home.
It amazed her sometimes how tight-knight the boys were. They were nearly like brothers. Supported one another and fought with one another like them too. Older ones helping the younger and always looking out for one another at school. They stuck together, and for it Tessa was grateful. It was hard going through life when you lived in a place like that. At so young. A constant reminder and marker for the rest of the world to see that you were…Unwanted. That there was something wrong with you.
There was nothing wrong with any of them. Puzzles that needed to be figured out, pieces that needed to be found. And she hoped they knew they were wanted. They were cared for. They were loved. Maybe not by the people who should have been doing those things. But by someone. By her.
When they came back to the Boys’ Home, the smell of pot roast permeated the air. Tessa took in a great lungful of the scent and breathed out a sigh. Something like nostalgia and longing hit her in the chest. It was her mother’s recipe, a smell that reminded her of home. Not even just the place, but the feeling.
“Alright, if y’re homework’s not done hop to it — n’if it is, I need ya t’show it t’me so we can go over it together, alright?” Tessa told the three boys as they ran past her in the entry hall, making a beeline for their shared room with the other two who didn’t get to go out for ice cream.
All three of them gave some vague noise of agreement before they disappeared from her sight. She laughed with a shake of her head as she walked further into the house.
The Amelia County Boys’ Home was built in 1886 as just a residential home. A grand Victorian settled in the newly established Wabang, Wyoming — then a booming oil town. The house one Walter Granger had built when he and his wife first got married. They were together only five years before he died. Left widowed, with more money than she knew what to do with, and no children of her own, Abigail Granger decided to convert her home into a place for troubled and orphaned children.
By the time the Home was nearing its 100th anniversary, it was bought by the state. Out of private funds and Abigail Granger dead for nearly twenty years. But its legacy was one that permeated the town, the county, the whole state even. Boys were sent from all over for well over 100 years to live and learn there. Boys whose parents couldn’t take care of them for a while, boys with behavior issues, boys who had nowhere else to go.
June Abernathy volunteered there when Tessa was young — before Tessa was born. And maybe that’s what made her youngest daughter fall in love with the place. Or maybe it was some innate sense of caring. Generosity. Charity. That made her want to work there since she was twelve years old. Most kids wanted to be astronauts or work at zoos or be doctors — but not Tessa. The only thing she ever wanted to be was a social worker, before she even knew what the title was. It was her calling. Her destiny.
Even if that destiny forged some weight on her shoulders that never seemed to go away. Some weariness that had sunk into her bones. One that, most days, she forgot about. But others…But others it became impossible to ignore. Brought tears to her eyes and a pathetic whine to rise in her throat like she was a toddler throwing a tantrum. Because there was never enough time. Never enough of her to go around. To carry around her own and the baggage of five boys whose lives had been harder than most was a burden no one person should have to bear.
But Tessa did it gladly. Because it was what she always wanted.
Right?
After checking the pot roast, Tessa went to the living room where more clothing donations waited for her to sort and fold. Grabbing the box on top of the pile, she sat down on one of the couches to begin. The background noise of the boys talking, the old house creaking, and birds chirping outside permeated the air. She hoped and prayed, as she grabbed the hoodie from the top of the box, the rest of the weekend would go as smoothly as the morning had. Linda was leaving soon for her days off — it would just be Tessa in a house full of pubescent and pre-pubescent boys. Always a herculean task, one that left her feeling more ragged than usual, but one that gave her time to grow closer to the boys under her care.
Before she could truly inspect the sweatshirt for stains or holes, Levi walked into the room with his hands shoved in his own hoodie pockets. The seventeen year old wore clothes like they were meant to cover something. Meant to hide in. Big hoodies and t-shirts. He was shorter than Colton, pale and all sharp angles. Inside and out.
The cut above his eyebrow was healing well. Just a dark red line now, scabbed over and healing itself, instead of the bright crimson it had been. But the bruise around his eye still looked gnarly. Purple and angry, swelling his lids shut slightly.
Another fight at school that left Linda furious.
But Tessa just felt some heavy weight in her chest.
“Feelin’ okay?” she asked as he flopped down into the armchair across from her.
“M’face hurts,” he grumbled back, revealing a red knuckled hand to card it through his jet black hair. Then he sighed. “N’so does m’head.”
“Wan’some ibuprofen?”
“Yeah.” He paused, finally looking up at her with those spring-grain green eyes. “Please.”
Tessa smiled, small and soft, before she put back the sweatshirt and went to the kitchen. A minute later, she handed Levi a glass of water and two little red pills. He swallowed them without drinking anything.
Sitting back down on the couch she asked, “Wanna talk’bout it?”
“No’really,” he said, clenching his jaw.
Tessa bit her lip. Busied her hands with the donated hoodie again, looking it over for longer than she should but not really paying attention as she chose her next words carefully.
“Principle called ya know. Told me wha’happened,” she spoke gently, calmly, making sure he sensed no anger or disappointment. “That some other kid was gettin’ beat up n’you stepped in.”
Levi wouldn’t look at her. Worked his jaw back and forth as his leg bounced anxiously. He always had been an angry kid. It was why he was at the Home in the first place. Too many fights in his hometown. His single mother didn’t know what to do — didn’t know how to handle him. And maybe didn’t want to handle him. A kid with so much anger, made only angier that no one seemed to care. No one seemed to want to try. To stick around.
Tessa hoped he knew that she wanted to try. Wanted to stick around.
“I wan’you t’know…” she started slowly, “Fightin’ isn’t always th’answer. N’t’be honest, if ya keep it up, y’ll end up someplace worse than a Boy’s Home. N’there won’be anythin’ I c’n do t’stop it.”
He finally looked at her. A hint of fear in that green eye that Tessa hoped sunk to the heart.
“But uh — I am proud’a ya…For standin’ up f’r that kid.”
The corner of his mouth ticked up as he looked back to his lap. Tessa smiled too.
“Ll’try, Tess,” he mumbled. “I don’...I don’ wanna leave.”
Some of that weight lifted from her chest as he walked out of the room, back to the boys room. Tessa smiled again, proud of herself for getting through to him, when she finally acknowledge the donation hoodie she had been messing with for the past few minutes.
It was an Amelia County High School Rodeo team sweatshirt. Sage green and faded with time and good use. The sleeves were frayed and dotted with small holes. It had seen a good few years. She grinned as she took in the bucking bronco logo with a cowboy clinging to the saddle. One hand raised in the air with a lasso twirling above his head.
She thought back to Rhett Abbott, her cheeks warming.
A group of them snuck down to the hotel pool past their curfew. They were supposed to be in bed, sleeping and preparing for the round of rides and ropings set for tomorrow morning. But that didn’t seem to matter to any of them just then. When it was ten o’clock and they were hours away from home. Their chaperones none the wiser as they snuck out of their rooms in their swimsuits. Giggling and whispering and quietly squealing to one another.
Tessa sat at the edge of the pool, feet ankle deep in the cool water with Taylor Goyer at her side. A fellow barrel racer, two older than her, and one of the team captains. If she was down here with the rest of the delinquents surely it was okay.
Taylor was telling her something about a movie she watched recently. Something about magicians and card tricks and stealing money. But Tessa wasn’t really paying attention. Instead, she was focused on the group of bull riders huddled together at the other end of the pool.
Rhett Abbot was one of them. He was thin and baby faced and his hair was slicked back from the water but he was still handsome. Even in that horrible hotel pool light. He shone with the water still clinging to him, laughing at something one of the other guys said. She had never seen him shirtless before. And it made something stick in her throat that she couldn’t quite get rid of.
“Who’re you lookin’ at? Dalton?” Taylor broke her out of her revere.
“Um — “ Tessa shook her head as she looked back at her friend. “No one. Jus’got lost’n space I’guess.”
Taylor took the excuse with narrowed eyes, jumping right back in and telling Tessa that she should watch the movie she was talking about. And Tessa looked back at Rhett one last time as he grabbed Alyssa Harrod around the calves and pulled her into the pool.
She wondered if he would pull her into the pool now. If he would wrap his arms around her waist and try to pull her under to ruin her hair. She shook her head and scoffed quietly.
What a ridiculous thought. She was an adult now. Grown out of wanting to be teased that way. But still, some part of her that was still fifteen, wanted it desperately.
With a sigh, she turned the sweatshirt around, and her eyes widened.
Abbott was iron pressed onto the back in block white letters. Most of them were peeled up and fading, but that last name was still clear as day. She remembered seeing that sweatshirt on Alyssa Harrod. On Olivia Barlow. It was a stamp. A seal. A claiming back in high school. They were seeing Rhett Abbott, and all that that meant.
The hoodie couldn’t be a donation. It had a name on it, the boys couldn’t wear it. So, indulging her fifteen year old self just this once, Tessa got up from the couch with the article of clothing clutched in her hands.
And stuffed it into her closet.

For the most part, Rhett didn’t mind grinding cattle feed. It was a long process, usually taking all of the working hours, and the grinder was so loud he didn’t have to talk to whoever was working with him. His father, with quiet but stern questions about what he was doing with his life. Or Perry, encouraging him to keep up with bull riding with that sad look in his eyes like he had lost something.
Rhett knew what his brother thought was gone but he would never bring it up. He would rather save himself the punch in the face it would grant him.
But today, he didn’t have to deal with either of them. His father was out in the fields counting heads of cattle. And Perry had the day off to spend with his family while the weather was still nice. Which left Rhett all alone amongst the store barns out in the east pasture, grinding feed all by himself.
It was more work for just one person, driving tractors and pulling wagons and making sure the corn was being fed into the grinder, but he really didn’t mind. Beat having to discuss his life everyone thought was going nowhere fast — including himself most days.
There were some days, however, all by himself on his family’s expansive land, when he could see the beauty in Wabang. See past the dust and the grime and the lingering smell of decay. That Saturday in September was one of them. The morning was bright and clear as he rode his horse, Ace, out at dawn. The air cool and crisp, the grass frosted underfoot. By midmorning, he needed to take his jacket off, the sun shining bright amongst great puffy clouds. The mountains seemed to glitter off in the distance, sway in the rising heat of day. Their snow covered peaks like a promise of the winter that was to come.
It was beautiful, but it was just his life. Green fields, far off mountains, infinite blue sky. A postcard existence — but he knew what it was really like. It was being born and living and dying all in one town and never seeing anything else. It was hard work and back breaking labor. It was stiff joints at twenty-three but no right to complain. It was struggling to make ends meet, eating six to a table crammed in a small kitchen. It was dirt under fingernails and sun damaged skin. It was grinding cattle feed alone with a sprained wrist that ached every time he picked up a supplement bag.
The trailer filled up at about two and a half tank loads of feed. There was still half a tank left in the mixer, but he could come back for it later. It was past noon, the sun was beating down on his back, and he had been working for seven hours straight. Without so much as a water or a snack to munch on as he watched the supplement and ground corn mix together. Once the feed trailer was stowed safely in the dry barn, Rhett untied Ace from the post and rode back to the house.
Hoping to find a quick bite and not get yelled at for not finishing his job.
Pushing a thing of dip tobacco between his cheek and gums with his tongue, he walked towards the front door. His stomach rumbling as he watched his boots move across the dirt path and through the grass. But when he looked up, he noticed Amy sitting out in the yard.
She was the spitting image of her mother, Rebecca. Eyes bright and blue with thin, pale blonde hair — cheeks dusted in freckles and teeth crooked, just a little too big for her mouth. Everyone expected Perry’s genes to be stronger, but there didn’t seem to be an ounce of Abbott in her. And for that, Rhett was almost grateful.
Would have been a real goofy looking kid if she ended up anything like his brother. Or him even.
Amy was braiding clovers together into a crown, weaving the stems slowly with big eyes downcast. Her little mouth downcurved in a frown.
Rhett spit out his dip as he approached her.
“Hey, ladybug, watchya doin’ ou’here?” he asked, tugging his gloves from his hands.
She set the messily braided clovers down with a sigh then looked back over her shoulder at the house. When she met his eyes, she looked like she wasn’t supposed to tell him.
But she did it anyway: “Mom and Dad’re fightin’ again.”
Now that he was listening, he could hear the yelling coming from inside the house. Something about space and how this wouldn’t have happened and needing to get over it. Fragments and sound bites. Another of those things about living in an old ranch house. The walls weren’t good at keeping secrets.
He grunted, put his hands on his hips. For a second, anger flared up in Rhett’s chest. So this was what Perry was doing instead of helping him with the feed? Arguing with his wife about the same old shit and not making any progress because he was too stubborn to actually listen to her? Then a sort of sadness trickled in with it.
Amy shouldn’t have to hear that shit, either.
She was only nine, and already she understood too much about her parents’ feelings towards the Abbotts, the ranch, Wabang, and each other. Already saw and heard too much. There was already something too grown up behind those blue eyes and Rhett didn’t like it. He could remember holding her for the first time when he was just fourteen. Everyone made him sit down to do it because they didn’t trust him and he didn’t know why. Not until Perry placed that little baby in his arms, telling him to support her head. He had never held something so delicate before in all his life, and hadn’t since. Fragile, precious, terrifying. New life — only one week in this world. It made him tear up and he didn’t even know why.
Eventually, he could hold her while standing, while walking, sometimes even while running. Eventually, he scared the shit out of Rebecca by tossing her in the air, her shrieking giggles making him laugh. Eventually, she could talk and he liked to listen, about bugs and horses and sparkling shoes and pretend princesses saving knights from dragons. Eventually, she was mostly grown up and so was he.
But Rhett didn’t want her to grow up, not yet. She deserved to stay little, just for a little longer. Making crowns out of clovers and giggling and not knowing what secrets the walls refused to keep.
“Whaddaya say we go ge’ice cream?”
“Really?” she questioned, popped up onto her knees with a small toothy smile.
Rhett chuckled. “Yeah, really. Lemme go change.”
He tapped her on the head lightly with his gloves as he passed her, making her laugh. And it made him smile despite the anger still bubbling in his chest and the hunger gnawing at his gut.
When he pulled open the screen door, its loud screech and bang as the old hinges smacked it back against the exterior wall announced his presence before he even walked inside. The yelling suddenly came to a halt. He rolled his eyes as he crossed the entry and climbed the stairs, distantly hearing the argument pick back up in harsh whispers.
Once in a fresh pair of jeans and an old rodeo t-shirt, beat up trucker hat hiding the sweat slicking his hair, he called out that he was taking Amy into town. No one answered him and he didn’t repeat himself. He just strode right back out into the shadeless yard where Amy stood waiting for him with her hands in her pockets. The corner of his mouth ticked up as he took her under his arm and led her over to his truck.
“Ya missed lunch,” she pointed out as they climbed inside.
“Might ge’more th’n ice cream then,” he said, starting the engine.
“So Jiffy Treat?”
“Course.”
The local ice cream shop, in business since 1973. It was nothing special. Just a squat building on the side of the road with a walk-up window and a few covered tables out front screwed into the concrete. It was the place to go in the Wabang heat to cool off. Mostly just sad dads bringing their kids to try and make them feel better about whatever was going on at home.
Rhett never thought he would be one of those sad dads — sad uncle really.
As the truck shook and rumbled down the gravel drive towards the main road and off Abbott land, Amy quickly snatched up the cardboard box at her feet and set it in her lap. The box had water damage healed over one too many times and a missing corner, but it still did the job alright. Holding an unorganized and haphazardly placed collection of cassettes.
“Which one has the Georgia song on it?” Amy rifled through the tapes, plastic clacking together as she threw them around.
Rhett knew which song she was talking about instantly. “Reba McEntire — uh, lady wi’curly hair — black’n white.”
It took her a minute to find it, but once she did, she held it up and giggled triumphantly. Rhett told her to put it in as he turned left onto the paved road that led into town, cranking open his window to let in a breeze. He still felt like he smelled like ground corn and yeast. But he wasn’t about to make her wait any longer by taking a shower — or let his stomach continue to eat itself any more than he had to.
With a whir of tape and a few skipped tracks, the opening guitar and piano of The Night The Lights Went Out In Georgia started to play.
Amy sang along loudly, bobbing her head to the beat and missing a few of the words. While Rhett muttered them all quietly, tapping his fingers against the steering wheel. Asking once the song was over for her to rewind the tape and let him listen to the album in full.
“You need t’get a new radio, Uncle Rhett,” she said as she pressed the right buttons. “One y’can plug y’r phone into.”
He chuckled softly. “I like m’tapes jus’fine.”
“Y’sound like Gran’pa.”
Amy said it with a laugh, and Rhett rolled his eyes for her to see. But she didn’t need to know that stabbed at something inside him he didn’t like. A beast, locked in a cage. Pacing, waiting to be angered enough to set itself free.
He didn’t want to be like his dad.
But apples didn’t fall far from trees in Wabang — inevitable and constant.
There were a few other cars parked in the small Jiffy Treat lot. Kids in swimsuits either just coming back or going to the swimming hole over in Hayden running around the umbrella shaded tables. The parents chatting with cones in hand.
Amy jumped out of the truck first as soon as Rhett threw it in park. He was quick to follow after her, already fishing his wallet out of his back pocket. The teenager working the window slid it open with a smile as they walked up.
“What can I ge’for ya?” she asked, finely manicured nails poised with a pen and notepad.
Rhett ruffled Amy’s hair as he looked over the menu. “Go’head, ladybug.”
“Can I have a scoop’ve bubblegum with sprinkles, please?”
“In a cone or a cup?”
“Cone, please,” Amy said, then backed away from the window so Rhett could step up.
“N’ll take two hotdogs n’a thing’a onion rings, please,” he said, thumbing the few bills in his wallet. “N’can I get a cup’a water?”
It did not go out of his notice how the young girl looked him up and down, teeth biting into her lip as she wrote down his order. It made him shift his weight to his other foot, hoping to just get away soon. But her pink blush did remind him of someone — and it made the corner of his mouth raise.
“That it?” she asked.
“Yep.”
She gave the total with his cup of water and he paid, Amy’s ice cream quickly being called from the other window. Bright pink and covered in rainbow sprinkles. Her smile was ear to ear as she took it with both hands and sat down at one of the tables. Rhett plopped down on the bench across from her and tried not to focus on just how hungry he really was. It was nice under the shade of the umbrella, sun no longer beating down on his back. Birds chirped in the yards on either side and cars rumbled past on the road behind him. He could feel the wind they created whipping at his shirt. It would have felt good if he didn’t worry that if they swerved even a little he was done for.
“R’Mom n’dad gonna get a divorce?” Amy asked as she licked at her ice cream.
Rhett coughed around his drink of water. “Wha’makes ya say that?”
“Lily Stockton n’my class — her parents’re gettin’ divorced.” She shrugged. “She said they fought a lot. Now she goes t’her dad’s house on the weekends.”
She didn’t seem sad. But she wouldn’t look at Rhett directly either. Watching the swimsuit kids as they got rounded up by their parents or cars as they drove by.
“Shit, I don’know,” Rhett said after a moment to think, pushing his tongue into his cheek despite having no dip to fiddle with.
That seemed to appease her for the minute, and he was thankful. Because there was always the possibility. He couldn’t rule it out and he always had been terrible at lying to his niece. If they did get divorced everyone would probably be happier save his mother, who would just be heartbroken at her son’s broken marriage. His broken family. They would become a constant prayer request to her church group. Though he doubted she brought up their struggles to them now. Keep things in the family until it bursts at the seams for everyone to see.
His food got called and he muttered a thank God under his breath as he got up to get it. He didn’t even care to put ketchup or mustard on his hotdogs, he just sat down and started eating. It was hot and fried and delicious.
As they ate, Amy trying to keep up with her ice cream before it melted onto her hand, an old white Jeep with wood paneling on the sides pulled into the lot. Rhett watched it as he finished off his second hot dog, Amy making some comment about how he always ate too fast. It was a nineties model at the least, though it was hard to say without asking. Minimal rust around the bottom and the paint needed to be redone but that didn’t matter much. Every car looked like a junker in Wabang. Old model trucks with longer beds than any of those 21st century Ford monstrosities could offer. Rhett was surprised at how good the engine sounded though, a nice rumble as it slowed to a stop and cut off completely. A rarity for a car that age in a town like this.
The back doors swung open first, three boys clambering out and into the sun. They waited patiently by the bumper as the driver stepped out.
Rhett nearly choked on one of his onion rings.
She looked beautiful. Light brown hair falling around her shoulders and the golden chain of her locket peeking out from a quarter zip with the sleeves rolled up. Her wide smile was like its own sun as she slammed the creaking driver’s door shut and gestured for the boys that poured out of her car to get in line. The smallest of them running ahead to go first. She followed behind. Her eyes big and blue as July squinted in the sun, turning them to slits crinkled at the edges, and Rhett smiled.
He really hoped he would see Tessa Abernathy again. It had been nearly a week since he got to apologize in the fluorescent light of the general store. He just thought, and maybe hoped, he would have more control over his heart rate than he did right then; pounding against his ribcage as he watched her walk and dig through her purse at the same time. Would she notice him? Would she talk to him? He nearly wanted to slap himself. He was never like this around women. Especially women he wanted. He knew all the tricks and he knew all the lines — just to feel something, just to get loved for a night. But this was different. She was different.
Then Amy suddenly gasped. “That’s Jace!”
Rhett blinked rapidly as he looked back at his niece, feeling like he just got caught doing something he shouldn’t. “Uh — w-who?”
“He’s in m’class — we sit at the same table,” she said, pointing at the smallest boy bouncing up and down in front of the order window. “C’n I go say hi?”
“Sure, ladybug,” he replied.
She didn’t waste a second. Pink ice cream dribbled down onto her knuckles as she raced over to talk to the little boy. He looked just as excited to see her as she was him. Gasping and jumping and pointing to the order window — which was handing down to him a bowl of multicolored ice cream covered in gummy worms. Rhett finished off his onion rings and wiped his hands off on his jeans as he watched them. Happy that Amy was distracted — at least for a little while. That she wasn’t thinking about her parents yelling at each other through thin walls or Lily Stockton or having to spend weekends at her dad’s. That she wasn’t asking him questions he didn’t know the answers to. Instead, she was just being a kid. Talking excitedly with a friend, getting sticky fingers, and eating bright pink ice cream covered in sprinkles. That was what she deserved. To just stay little, just a little longer.
But Rhett stiffened, hot dogs and onion rings sitting like led in his stomach, as he watched Tessa come up to the order window, paying for the three boys’ ice cream. He couldn’t hear what they were saying, but her and Amy were clearly talking to one another. Tessa smiling at the two little kids fondly and making big facial expressions that made him smile.
Then Amy was pointing at him. Tessa turned her head to look with raised brows. She smiled, wide and stunning and full of a kindness he could nearly see and felt undeserving of receiving. Raising his hand, he waved with a small smile —
And he had to stop himself from cringing.
He was definitely regretting those hot dogs, and not showering, now as Amy and Jace rushed over to sit on the bench opposite him. Amy saying something about him being her uncle and riding bulls. Jace didn’t seem that interested. Rhett hadn’t even noticed the group of teens that had taken over the table next to them until the two older boys came over and joined them. That just left Tessa, carrying a waffle cone filled with some yellow ice cream, to sit with him at his table. Unable to stop himself, he started fiddling with the paper boat his food came in. Why did talking to her now feel like he was sitting on the back of a bull, the gate about to open and his career on the line?
“Hey, Rhett, how’s it goin’?” she asked as she sat down on the bench at his right.
“G-Good, yeah,” he answered, glancing up at her and looking away. “You? How’s it goin’ with you?”
“M’good too,” she laughed, hiding her smile with her ice cream, then she looked over at Amy and Jace, lost in their own world. “Y’r niece’s cute. Her’n Jace seem t’get along.”
Rhett swallowed thickly. Some part of him wanted to smack himself because he knew talking with her was so damn easy. Even though all his life talking to anyone was a struggle he preferred to avoid. Truth and stories and some secret part of him bubbling to the surface because, somehow, he wanted her to see it and know. But he didn’t want to mess this up. Not again.
“He — uh — he livin’ in the Home? W-With you?”
“Yeah. He’s’re youngest righ’now.”
“Wha’is he? Nine?” he asked, brows furrowed, finally looking her in the face.
She wasn’t looking at him, and that made it easier. Too focused on Amy and Jace as they talked about school and sports and shows they liked. How she was obviously Spider-Man and he was Hulk. There was a kind of sadness in her eyes though that he had never seen before. One he wanted to fix.
Eventually, she nodded, hand raising to cover her tongue peaking out, licking ice cream from her lip. “He’s a foster. Couldn’even get’im t’say a word when he first showed up. Now look at’im.”
Rhett didn’t fully understand what that meant, but he knew enough. A foster kid. Either his parents were out of the picture or he got taken away from them by the state. Rhett hadn’t even realized he was ripping a fringe into the edge of his paper boat until he had finished an entire side.
“He’s go’somebody good takin’ care’a him now,” he mumbled, watching the side of her face as she ate her sweet treat. “Makes’a difference.”
There was that pretty pink blush that made the freckles on her cheeks stand out. Her eyes sliding over to look at him as she licked her lips again. It made him laugh softly.
She chose not to comment as she glanced down at his unbraced hand. “Wrist feel better?”
“Uh, yeah,” he said as he flexed his fingers. “S’alright.”
“Takin’ it easy?”
“Nope.”
Tessa leveled him with a look and it filled up something warm in his chest. She barely knew him, but she cared. Enough to get mad at him for not resting his injury and rolling her eyes when he laughed and said what? No one in his family had yet to mention it. Even when he took off the brace before he really should have. Even when he winced and clenched his jaw doing certain tasks. It was like it wasn’t even there. That something warm was still there, but beside it was something sour. Tart and bitter to the taste.
One of the boys that came with her walked up to their table. He appeared to be the oldest. Long curly black hair and headphones around his neck — skateboard tucked under his arm. Tall and unaware of the fact. Skin cratered like the moon. His face looked permanently pinched up in anger, bushy eyebrows furrowed low over dark eyes. But when he spoke, he didn’t sound grumpy at all.
“We’re gonna go’cross the street. That alright?” he asked, pointing to where he and his friends wanted to go.
Rhett looked over his shoulder. It was just an alley between downtown brick buildings. Someone tried to decorate it once with creeping ivy and string lights and metal benches. But the ivy was now brown, the string lights were gone, and the benches were uninviting — save for a kid with a skateboard.
Tessa nodded easily with a smile. “Yeah, s’fine. Wyatt with you?”
The teen nodded.
“Alright, go’on. We’re gon’leave n’bout thirty minutes.”
A smile broke out across his face. An unexpected expression for him, but it suited him well. Then he jogged off, back to his friends. Rhett couldn’t help but notice Tessa watching them with her brows pinched together.
“Wha’s that look for?” he questioned as she turned back to her nearly finished ice cream.
“S’just…” She seemed to wrestle with her words for a second, tongue pushed into the roof of her mouth as she thought. Then she sighed as she looked at him with her head leaning towards her shoulder. “Wyatt’s younger than Colton n’all his friends n’I…I don’wan’im gettin’ made fun of.”
“That’s jus’life. He’ll be fine.”
“Still hurts,” Tessa said.
There was something in those eyes like July that Rhett couldn’t really read. Something like too much understanding. Something like experience. Something like Amy too grown up. Again, he suddenly was filled with the urge to fix. To make that look in her eyes go away. To make whoever made fun of her pay for it because she didn’t deserve that. To take her out for ice cream to help her forget. Bring back that kindness in her eyes, at least for a little while.
“Uncle Rhett!” Amy suddenly called, “Should I be Mikey or Donnie?”
Rhett stared at her for a second, brows furrowed — then it clicked. “Oh, like the ninja turtles?”
“Yeah!”
Tessa placed her hand on his arm to get his attention. “We’ve got the ole’eighties show on VHS. Jace’s obsessed righ’now.”
“We, uh —” He swallowed thickly as she retracted her hand, watching her soft as silk hands retreat almost sadly. “We watched the nineties movie together —  few weeks back.”
“Oh, that’s so fun.”
“Rhett!” Amy cried, exasperated. “Should I be Donnie or Mikey?”
“Mikey,” he answered simply, not even having to think.
Amy immediately hopped up and struck a pose with her fists posed for a fight. “I’m Michelangelo!”
“And I’m Leonardo!” Jace yelled as he sprang from the bench as well, pulling pretend swords from his back.
Then they were off. Amy twirling imaginary nun-chucks around as they play fought one another. Weaving around the other empty tables and jumping up onto benches. Rhett and Tessa watched them with laughs on their lips.
“Y’ever — uh — y’ever pretend t’be somethin’ when y’were a kid?” Rhett asked as he looked at the back of her head.
She turned her head over her shoulder, eyes still focused on the kids, as she said, “Used t’pretend I was a fairy. Had a pair’a wings from Halloween I’wore f’r nearly a year.”
Rhett chuckled as he looked down into his lap. He could picture it perfectly. Little girl refusing to take the wings off even if they were bent up and dirty, because she was a fairy. Her parents just giving up and letting it happen. He thought it was adorable — nearly said so but he bit his tongue at the last second.
“I’d wander’round the yard wi’those, uh toy guns? Thinkin’ I’s a cowboy.”
“That’s sweet,” she said as she turned back to look at him with a smile, small and kind.
Her ice cream cone was finished, but there was a glob of yellow on her chin — just beneath her lip. She just looked so pretty. Rhett knew he shouldn’t. After coming so close to ruining whatever was blossoming between them. But before he could really think it through, before he could rationalize, before he could nail down what he should do instead of what he wanted to do — his hand was reaching for her.
“Oh, you — ya got somethin’...” Rhett said, tucking his forefinger beneath her chin and wiping at the rogue ice cream drip with his thumb.
Her cheeks turned an even brighter shade of pink, the color going down, down into the collar of her quarter-zip as he made a second pass on her soft skin to make sure he got it all. Eyes downcast as she took a deep, steadying breath. When he finally pulled away, the ice cream was gone, and she looked up at him from beneath her lashes with her lip caught between her teeth.
That same look from that night at the bonfire. Before she practically ran away from him and he was left with a different kind of ache. A different kind of itch. That only she could fill. With her kindness and just right smiles and heart too big for her chest. Regret pooled in his stomach like concrete along with those hotdogs and onion rings. His mouth opened and closed as he wrestled with an apology. But then…
“D’you get it?” she asked quietly.
“Uh-huh,” he muttered, relief flooding him now, as he licked his thumb clean. “Tastes good.”
Tessa stared at him for a moment. Thoughts churning behind those big blue eyes and her mouth popped open. Made him smirk as he watched her. She wasn’t running for the hills yet, and for that he was thankful. He no longer felt like he was in the chute, on top of a bull, his career on the line. Instead, he felt like Rhett Abbott talking to Tessa Abernathy. Siphoning off that kindness and maybe giving some out in return.
“It’s, uh — it’s lemon poppyseed,” she finally decided to say and it only made his grin grow.
“‘Ll have t’try it sometime.”
Then his phone vibrated in his pocket. A text from his mother.
Your dad’s wondering why the rest of that feed hasn’t been stored.
“Ah, shit. We gotta go,” he said, collecting his trash as he rose from his seat.
“R-Really?”
“Yeah, got work t’do.” He fished his keys out of his pocket. “Ladybug! C’mon, we gotta get on home!”
Amy sighed, but said goodbye to Jace. Once his trash was disposed of, he put Amy under his arm and started the walk back to his truck. Telling Tessa it was nice seeing her and trading reluctant farewells.
Once inside the truck, Amy grinned at him like she knew a secret.
“What?” he laughed.
“You like her.”
Rhett felt his face flush. “I — you don’t — I don’t —”
“S’alright. I won’t tell,” she said as she settled back into her seat with a pleased smile.
He started the truck with a huff. “Little shit.”
The ride back to the ranch was easy and quiet. Amy leaning back in her seat with her head tilted towards the window — watching endless green fields roll by. And Rhett caught up in thoughts of Tessa Abernathy with ice cream on her chin and looking up at him through thick lashes.
He supposed he couldn’t deny that he liked her. As childish as the term sounded. At the very least, he wanted to be with her. Get to know her. Talk with her. Pulling from her with such ease that kindness the world didn’t deserve and maybe show her some in return — even if he wasn’t very good at it. It was a foreign sort of urge and an alien kind of weight in his chest. Rhett didn’t like his partners, no matter how long or short they were together, getting too close to him. Seeing all that he was and all that it meant, all the dust and grime and that he was just like everyone else in Wabang. A horse sent out to pasture, waiting to die. Knowing there was better but being too afraid and too caught up in it all to leave. He thought he could leave it all behind once. But then he didn’t, and it brought a shame he still didn’t understand and didn’t want to deal with. He couldn’t get out. And maybe that was why he was the guy that made them realize they wanted to be married, just not to him.
But then again, Tessa didn’t get out either. And she seemed like one of the only things in this life that hadn’t been touched by the Wabang grime. Shiny and bright and loving this life in a small town.
He might not have deserved a girl like that, but he was willing to try.
When he parked in front of the house, Amy leaping from the passenger seat and running inside, his dad was waiting on the porch for him. Sitting on the old bench his grandmother thrifted from an antique store. A relic from one of the ancient country churches that closed its doors long ago. His ankles crossed and fingers threaded together in his lap as he watched Amy head inside. Rhett sighed as he cut the engine and opened his door — knowing what was waiting for him once he went up those steps.
He didn’t even make it up one of them before his dad started talking gruffly, “Wen’out t’check on ya ‘while ago…Left all the equipmen’out.”
“Yeah, yeah — Goin’ back to finish grindin’ now,” Rhett replied, taking one booted foot off the step and putting it back on the ground.
“Where’d y’take Amy?”
“Ice cream.”
“Y’had work t’do.”
Rhett clenched his jaw, ticked it to one side. Adjusted his weight from one foot to the other. Itching to get away so he wouldn’t get in more trouble than he was. But he never had been good at not putting his foot in his mouth.
“Yeah, well, somebody had t’make sure she wasn’t hearin’ her parents’ screamin’ match,” he said, finally looking his father in the face with his jaw set and eyes ablaze.
His dad stared at him for a moment. Chin jutted out and small brown eyes narrowed. Then he rose from his seat and Rhett straightened, prepared to defend himself. His own fight the walls wouldn’t keep to themselves.
“Just get the feed done.”
Then he turned and walked inside.
Rhett looked at that old empty church pew for a minute. Mind reeling through everything else he wanted to say. Why does Perry get a day off to have a fight with his wife? Did you even bring any food or water when you came to check on me? If the work wasn’t done would you have even noticed I was gone?
Prayers to an absent god.
Then he pushed off from the porch step and walked back to the barn.

Here to Stay (Rhett Abbott x OC)
listen I saw a post this morning and I blacked out and now we're here....enjoy the filth (aka oral m receiving and implied masturbation)
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Tessa pulled off of him with a soft pop, looking up at him with saliva glistening on the corners of her mouth and eyes half-lidded. “Keep the ice on y’r hand, bubs.”
“Y-Y’re not makin’ it — easy,” Rhett replied, voice pitchy and breathless as she kissed at his pelvic bone.
She had the audacity to smile almost bashfully as she turned her face into his hip. Rhett really didn’t think he deserved this. Locked in the one-person bathroom, back pressed against the door with his jeans around his boots, his almost-girlfriend getting her knees dirtied and marked up just to please him. A thank-you, she called it as she dragged him into the bathroom.
Rhett didn’t need thanking for punching that guy in the face — three times. He put his hands where they didn’t belong and called Tessa things he should have prayed to God for forgiveness for. Should have prayed to Rhett for forgiveness for as he was dragged out of the Pit Bar by the back of his shirt. Rhett, with all that anger and fury bubbling beneath his skin, wanted to keep hitting him. Wanted to follow him out into the parking lot and make him apologize over and over until Rhett was satisfied.
But then Tessa put her hand around his wrist. Looked up at him with gratitude and fear in her eyes — and all thoughts of that asshole left his mind. She was the only thing that mattered. He was practically putty in her hold as she pulled him over to the bar and asked for a bag of ice for his already reddening knuckles.
Moldable and malleable and willing to do whatever she wanted. Even as she wrapped her lips around his leaking cock and took as much of him in her mouth as she could.
“Fu-uck, sunshine,” he breathed, the back of his head hitting the wooden door with an audible thunk.
The ice slipped from his red and aching knuckles again, but neither of them cared as it tumbled to the floor. A crunch and a splat on the busted tile. Not when he was slipping cold and wet fingers into her hair.
He sighed, “Too good t’me.”
She hummed around him, hands digging into the meat of his thighs as she bobbed her head. Drool leaking from the corner of her mouth. It took nearly all of Rhett’s willpower to pick his head up from the door and look down at her. She looked beautiful — just like he thought she would. Even in the dim, nearly flickering light of that bathroom. Mouth full of his cock, no one elses, his. There were tears in her eyes when she looked up at him through those thick lashes. And he couldn’t help the soft groan and little buck of his hips, pushing him further into her mouth, that had her moaning and gagging around him.
“O-Oh, shit —” He gripped her hair a little tighter, forced her to keep still even as that surprisingly devilish tongue kept working him. “C’n I keep goin’, baby? So close…”
Tessa nodded as best she could. Relaxed her jaw even as her nails dug further into his flesh. Prepping herself for what was to come. Rhett, with all the gentleness he could muster while his cock ached for release, put his other hand on the side of her face. Then he began to rock gently into her mouth.
“So good, Tess, fuck — mouth feels so good.”
He was babbling now and he didn’t even know it. Grunting and talking and praising as he worked his hips harder, faster. And Tessa just sat there and took it, moaning and gagging and tears streaming down her cheeks. He didn’t even notice the hand that had slipped beneath the skirt of her dress.
Not until his spine went rigid against the door and he was spilling into her mouth. And she swallowed it all dutifully — let him stay in her mouth until it hurt just enough for him to hiss and grin.
“Oh, sunshine,” he whispered when he finally came back to himself and noticed what she was doing.
Rocking into her own hand with her forehead rested on his hip.
“Just so good t’me,” she whimpered quietly.
The sound echoed in the bathroom quiet.

Her skin felt burning hot beneath his hand as he trailed it down, down, down her side. Rough fingertips slipping over yellow lace until they came to a halt on her hip. Rhett gently guided her hips to rock against his thigh once more, barely needing to apply pressure as she succumbed to the dripping need between her legs. He could feel a wet patch already forming on his jeans.
Tessa broke away from his desperate, consuming kiss with a whimper, fingers tangling in his hair. She looked so damn pretty in the low hotel room light. Light brown hair like burnt honey tossed messily over one shoulder. Blue eyes hooded and pink lips swollen from too many kisses parted and wet. Rhett leaned back against the headboard and just watched her for a moment. Those muscles in her abdomen rolling and contracting as she moved her hips against his leg all on her own. Just like riding a raging bull. God, he wished he hadn’t thrown his hat off at the door. That too big stetson sitting on her pretty head would be a sight right then.
God, he missed her. A month was too long. But they had different commitments, different rodeos. And they always knew they would end up together again somewhere down the line.
Somehow they always did.
His other hand slid up her thigh to squeeze the forgiving but hardened flesh tightly. “That’s it, keep goin’, sunshine.”
She was getting shy on him now. Leaning into his chest with her face pressed into his collar. No matter how many times they hooked up, Tessa still liked to hide from him. Hold back those noises. Not let him see. But Rhett loved coaxing her out of that shell. Making her fall apart over and over until all her inhibitions were down and she could just be Tessa. Not the famous, million-dollar barrel racer. Just the girl from Wabang, Wyoming getting her world wrecked by the boy she went to high school with.
So, picking up on her rhythm, Rhett pressed his thigh up into her at just the right time to make her grind down just that bit more pleasurable. And he revelled in the heavy moan that she let slip into the crook of his neck.
“Sound so pretty, sunny, tha’s a good girl.”
Involuntarily, her back arched, pushing her chest into his as a breathless oh slipped past her lips. Sometimes she hated how Rhett could climb the walls of her and poke at her tender center. Her most vulnerable parts. But really, it was her own fault for letting him in in the first place. He was a piece of home, a comfort, a release…One that she had missed terribly for the past four weeks. Their unspoken agreement when they were in the same city was one she didn’t want to break. One she didn’t want to lose because it wouldn’t just be the piece of home, the comfort, or the release she lost. It would be Rhett.
Who, despite the growing hardness in his jeans she could feel against her leg, didn’t push it. Didn’t even move besides the hand on her hip and thigh and his leg pressed into her. Who, despite the mutual benefit of their agreement, always put her pleasure first. Always made sure she fell apart as many times as she could take. Until there was nothing left in her head besides him and him only.
So, heart racing in her chest, she reached between them and cupped him through his jeans. Feeling the hard outline of him beneath the rough denim, long and thick and overwhelming.
Rhett’s grunt quickly turned into a low moan right in her ear, his hips bucking up into her hand. Then he shook his head with a kiss to her hair. “Don’worry’bout me, lemme help you.”
She whined high in her throat, moved against his thigh faster, burrowed into his chest further. But she can’t bring herself to retract her hand. Mostly out of embarrassment that her tactic to get him to finally fuck her didn’t work. But also because the feeling of him was grounding. This physical thing that showed he wanted her too.
But, God, she was getting impatient. She wanted him. Had craved the feeling of him stretching her out and making her his for nearly a month. That feeling of her just being Tessa Abernathy, and him just being Rhett Abbott, two kids from Wabang trying to find some sense of home in one another. Maybe even some sense of love.
Tessa, of course, didn’t know how to articulate any of that. Let alone that she just wanted him to press her down into the mattress and make her forget her own name already. Instead, all that came out was insistent whining into his chest. Her hips working against him harder, her hands pawing at his bare, broad shoulders.
She felt those same shoulders rumble with a chuckle. “Whaddaya want, sunny? Come on now.”
Threading his fingers into her hair, he pulled lightly and she went without complain, letting him look into her blown pupils with raised brows. Her hips slow to the occasional cant against the large wet mark in his jeans. After a minute of looking at him, wetting her lips and trying to find the words she finally whispered out:
“Wan — Want you.”
As her fingers reflexively squeezed around his bulge, making him groan. Then he captured her lips in a searing kiss, tongue fighting to lick inside her mouth and teeth nipping at her bottom lip. For a moment, she thought she was going to get what she wanted. But then his hand left her hair and trailed back down to her hip, gently urging her with a push and a tug to get her going again.
“Soak my thigh like a good girl,” he grumbled against her parted lips. “‘N’ll give ya what ya want.”
A half-frustrated groan slipped past her lips.
Rhett grinned. “What? Don’wanna be my good girl anymore, sunshine?”
“Wanna be good,” she whispered back, fingers pushing back into his hair she cut in a hotel bathroom back in Texas.
He smirked again as he pecked her lips, moved her hip a little harder.
“Then show me how much ya missed me.”
It was like a flip got switched. With a moan and a tug of his hair, she was reclaiming his lips. Possessive and overwhelming but in the best way possible. Rhett whined softly as her tongue slipped past his lips to taste whiskey and chewing tobacco. Her body moved harder, faster. It really was like she was riding a bull. Moving and rolling with every buck. Taking it all in stride. Even when he surprised her by trailing kisses down her neck and sucking at her hardened nipples through the lace of her bralette.
“Rhett,” she breathed, just on the edge, just a little more.
“Come on, sunny baby, give it t’me,” he panted back, warm breath enveloping her breast.
The way she gasped his name as she came had him twitching in her hand still tight as a vice around him. Then, like she weighed almost nothing, he was lifting her from his lap and settling her onto her back on the soft sheets. Gone were the rough motel thread counts they rolled around in when they both first started out on the circuit. Now, they were in a five-star hotel with a view. Now, the sheets were silken and expensive and there wasn’t a slot for a quarter to make the mattress vibrate (a feature Rhett sometimes missed).
Rhett undid his belt buckle, a big one from his latest win in Montana, and pushed his jeans and boxers far enough down for his cock to spring free. Angry and red and dripping precum. He felt ready to burst as he leaned back over her still panting form, his seams on their last threads with his hands on either side of her head.
“Did so good, sunshine, my sweet baby girl,” he muttered as he pressed kisses all over her face. She only hummed in reply, a happy sort of sound that made him grin against her cheek. “Wanna keep goin’?”
“Uh-huh, please,” she whimpered back, already squirming.
“Well, whaddaya want?” he teased, notching himself against her clothed entrance. “Come on, use y’r words.”
He couldn’t help but love to tease her on occasion. It made her bashful. Made her cheeks pink to something like cotton-candy in the low light. Even as she wriggled her hips to get him to do what she wanted and her teeth came down hard against her bottom lip. He could see the gears turning behind those bright blue eyes. The words she so desperately wanted to say but couldn’t bring herself to. With his fingers curling into those ridiculous silk sheets, he rolled his hips against her. Watched as her mouth dropped open and her eyelids fell nearly closed.
A sight he thought about almost every night while she was away from him.
He barely even started the next flex forward of his hips before she squeaked out, “Want you inside me — please!”
He couldn't resist that, no matter how much he wanted to keep teasing her. As he moved her panties to the side, he dropped his forehead to hers, and pressed his lips wherever they could reach. Then he pressed in slowly, letting out a deep, guttural groan at the feeling of her walls fluttering in a desperate attempt to accommodate him.
“Fuck, y’re tight,” he huffed as he paused, trying not to blow his load right then and there with the way she was squeezing him.
Tessa arched her back, brow furrowed as she looked down to where they met then back up to his face. “It-It’s been a month, bubs.”
“What? Didn’have anybody t’tide ya over?”
They both knew the answer to that. They both didn’t want to think about the implications of it right then either.
Rhett stilled again once he was sheathed to the hilt. Just feeling her pulse around him, warm and tight and just what he had been wanting. Listening to her panting where he had her caged beneath him. Struggling to take him. Some whine got caught in her throat as she pawed at his chest.
“Big,” she gasped sharply.
It made him shudder, arms buckling with his lips breathing heavy against her temple. “I know, baby, s’okay. You c’n take it. Know you can.”
She whined again as he tilted his hips and ground them into her clit. Trying to help, trying to ease the ache. She knew that. But right then, all she could truly think about was just how big Rhett Abbott was. How did she forget that nearly every single time? How he filled every available inch of space inside her, pressed against all the proper places, until she could feel him in her guts. How those broad shoulders and chest filled her entire view with her below him. Everywhere. All the time. Everything was him. And that meant everything was good.
“M-Move,” she was finally able to whisper as she hooked her calves over his hips. “Please.”
The small whine that punched out of him on his first draw back and push in makes her head spin. He moved slow but firm, moving in inches that felt like so much more to her. The once cool metal of his belt buckle pressed against her thigh now felt burning hot — a brand of his own making.
“Doin’ so good, sunshine, takin’ me so deep,” he praised as he mouthed at her cheek and jaw.
“R-Rhett,” she whimpered, feeling tears prick at the backs of her eyes as he tilted his hips just right and hit that spot only he had ever been able to find. “Oh, f-fuck, right there. Don’stop.”
“Can you cum f’me again, sunny? Be my good girl?” he asked, panting and stuttering, pace no longer slow but hard and fast, unable to control himself.
Tessa barely managed to sob out a yes. Tears streaming down her cheeks that part of her doesn’t know why they have appeared. Was it because it just felt so good? Was it because it was finally them together again at last? Was it because she already knew he was going to be gone in two weeks time? What she did know, what she did understand, is that when he wrapped one big hand around both her wrists and pushed her arms up the bed, she was a goner. Sobbing and moaning and sloppily trying to meet him thrust for thrust. When she reached that high, she crashed into it hard with a cry and an arch of her back and Rhett’s sweaty hair sticking to her neck.
She barely registered the warmth flooding her as Rhett gave his last few thrusts. And then a few more just because he liked when it hurt. When he was edged towards that overstimulation that made his eyes water. She always wondered if he did that with everyone he slept with or just her. But when he tried to pull out and she tightened around him, he hissed and whined and let go of her wrists to pound his fist into the mattress.
“Uhn, Tess, t-too much,” he grumbled breathily.
“Wan’you t’stay,” she said, tongue feeling too big for her mouth.
Still breathing heavy, Rhett flashed her a small smile. “Wanna keep me warm?”
“Uh-huh,” she replied, pushing his hair back behind his ear from where it had fallen across his face. “Jus’for a minute. Please?”
They both knew the answer. They both didn’t want to think about the implications of it.
With some slight manuevering and a few more noises from Rhett, he was flat on his back and she was straddling his hips. Curled up on his chest, listening to the slowing beat of his heart. A piece of home. Comfort. Release…
Happiness. Wholeness. Love.

She never did it intentionally. Most of the time she didn’t even realize she was doing it until she was in the middle. Until she was looking away from him with a heat in her cheeks she couldn’t deny and a wetness between her legs that mostly left her feeling embarrassed.
They were just hands.
But, God, they were Rhett’s hands.
Palms wide, fingers long and thick, blonde hairs on his knuckles and the backs of his hands. Littered in scars and callouses from years upon years of hard work and fighting and bull riding. So really, it wasn’t Tessa’s fault when she got caught up staring at them.
Curled around the steering wheel of his truck. Wrapped around a beer bottle or the lip of a coffee mug. Resting in his lap with his fingers threaded.
It didn’t help that she knew what those hands were capable of. What strength they held. Those hands could hold him onto the back of a raging bull for over eight seconds. Those hands that won him more fights than he lost. Those hands could fix her car's fuel pump like it was nothing.
Those hands that twined themselves around her hips and waist any chance they got. Those hands that entirely eclipsed her own when he held them. Those hands that, when dipped between her thighs, knew just where to touch. Just where to tease. Just where to press and when to make her see stars. Those hands that ghosted over her flesh to make her shudder. That held her breasts just right with those dexterous thumbs teasing over her nipples. Those fingers that taste like leather and tobacco when he puts them in her mouth. Those hands that caressed her and touched her like a thing divine. Those palms that gripped rough and hard after one of his rides — held her in place and molded her just how he liked.
“Sunshine. Tess? You there?” Rhett called, sudden and almost loud in her ears.
Tessa looked up from where she had spaced out. Vision snapping back into focus. Rhett sitting there at the dining room table with his hands up by his finished plate, looking at her with furrowed brows and an amused smile.
“D’you say somethin’?” she asked.
It came out more like a squeak. She knew she had been caught. Her face was probably beat red, and she really couldn’t ignore the desire that was growing within her. The dampness in her panties that only worsened when she tried to cross her legs. And Rhett knew her like no one else. She knew that he knew that something was up. Especially when he cocked a brow at her and sat back in his seat.
He nodded his chin at her. “What were uh…What were ya thinkin’bout?”
“N-Nothin’,” she replied.
She got up from her seat quickly, probably too quickly, to start clearing away the dinner plates and get things cleaned up. And Rhett just watched her. Fingers threaded together with his forearms rested on his thighs. God they always looked so good like that. Tessa looked for a second too long as she scooped up his plate.
He let it slide, for the moment. Let her slink away to the kitchen and fill the sink up with sudsy water.
No, it wasn’t until she was elbow deep in spaghetti dishes that he made his move.
She felt the heat of him first. That firm chest pressed against her back. His breath that still smelled of oregano and parmesan in her ear. However, she couldn’t help the small gasp that escaped her, floated into the open air against her will, when his palms came in contact with her jean clad hips. He smiled against the sensitive flesh of her neck as he pushed at first, then pulled her back into him.
It sent a jolt through her core that made her bite her lip.
Rhett kissed gently at the spot beneath her ear. “See somethin’ ya like, huh?”
“S’nothin’, bubs, honest,” she whispered back.
He tsked as he shook his head, dark hairs falling over his forehead as he skimmed those thin lips down her neck — to the juncture with her shoulder.
“Com’on, sunny baby, we talked’bout this,” he rumbled, one of those devilish, divine hands slipping beneath the hem of her shirt to tease at the soft flesh of her belly. “Gotta tell me wha’gets ya goin’.”
Tessa held out her resolve for as long as she could. Stopped up by embarrassment and pride. But then his hand was trailing up her abdomen, teasing at the bottom of her breast through her thin lace bralette, and she was putty in his hands. She knew he wouldn’t go any farther, and if she stayed silent long enough, he would pull away entirely. With some noise of discomfort and a laugh from Rhett, she pulled her hands out of the water and gripped the edge of the sink tight.
“S’embarrassin’,” she muttered, cheeks hot, still unable to just spit it out.
“S’okay,” he chuckled, nipped at her neck. “Think I already know what it is.”
“Y-You do?”
“Uh-huh.”
He pulled his face away from her neck. Confused, she didn’t know what he was doing. So she finally looked up from the fading suds. Just in time to catch in the darkened window, their reflections distorted but clear, Rhett’s hand rising to curl around her neck. He kept his grip light, but she could feel the presence there, the pressure and weight. It still made her choke, her chest suddenly heaving at the sight of that hand around her throat. Those thick fingers and hairy knuckles, that pale white scar between his forefinger and thumb. Without knowing it, her hips rolled back into him. Desperate for friction, desperate for release.
Rhett smirked as he caught her eye in the window reflection.
“Now don’t that make a pretty necklace?”
