im replaying and im at the point in the story where flayn goes missing and everyones like "OH MY GOD WE NEED TO FIND FLAYN", the dramatic music is playing in the monastery and everything

im talking to dimitri hes like "FUCK. WE CANT JUST STAND HERE WE HAVE TO FIND HER." and byleth is like "ok do u wanna have a tea party first tho :)" and hes like "....yeah lol :)"

Thinking about a line from Dimitri to Ashe in their C-support -- "We've fought side-by-side as equals, haven't we?"

Well ... yes and no. There's a good reason this argument whiffs every time Dimitri uses it. On the battlefield, even if he's not giving orders, he is still the prince of Faerghus. His life and death have international consequences that Ashe's just don't.

On the other hand, I think Dimitri's stance is more complicated than "royalty oblivious to his privilege."

Dimitri is very, very familiar with war and violent death. Dimitri watched his father die; Dimitri is acutely aware that kings die as brutally and messily as anyone else. If a spear goes through Dimitri's chest, he'll drown in his own blood just like Ashe would. In that respect, he's not wrong -- on a battlefield, he and Ashe are equals, in that they'll die just the same.

That's the part that Dimitri constantly tries and fails to communicate to the people around him. I don't think he's unaware that his status is inescapable -- in fact, I think he's all too aware of it -- but to Dimitri, mortality eclipses all other concerns. They'll all be equal in death, so don't die for him. Please, please, please, don't die for him.

You know, I see so many people refer to Claude, Edelgard, and Dimtiri, as being close friends during the academy phase. Personally, I don’t get that vibe from them at all. I think it’s tempting to push this narrative for ✨max angst✨ involving the war, but their interactions don’t read to me as anything more than polite.

Maybe it’s tragic to imagine them as the closest of friends ripped apart, but I think it’s even more heartbreaking to remember that these were children who didn’t even have a chance.

You have Claude, who is constantly evaluating everyone around him. The embodiment of distrust. He’s looking, silently begging, for reasons to trust them. He wants so badly to shape the future of both Almyra and Fódlan with him with them both - but he never can. He only sees cold analysis in their eyes, and that is all he allows himself to see. He’s not completely wrong.

You have Dimitri, who isn’t in the right mind to plan for the future. He subconsciously doesn’t even really believe he has one. He likes Claude well enough, even though he gets irritated over how nonchalant the guy acts. And Edelgard… well, he cares for her, but has trouble reading her and if she even remembers their past.

And, of course, Edelgard - who is planning to start a war and actively avoiding attachments to those who she is going to likely oppose on the battlefield. I think this is pretty self-explanatory.

It’s easy to imagine them as friends in another life, especially after Three Hopes, but I don’t think they ever were in either timeline - not truly.
