Sweeping Promises, Hunger For A Way Out (Feel It, 2020)

Weird band name. Sweeping Promises. The Vague Commitments. Sounds like a bunch of stoners who’ll never get out of their practice pad, not like a razor-sharp minimalist pop song-making machine.

Everybody in the DIY/punk circles is going crazy about Hunger For A Way Out, and I’m not surprised. First of all, it’s got a great opener: the title track reminds me of “Pervert” by Primetime, it has the same exciting force and simplicity, lodging itself easily between your ears for weeks after the first listen. The album sounds great: mono, the perfect amount of lo-fi, straight up clean bass, drums and guitars with a sprinkling of synths thrown on top. It's like you’re in the room, and the room is small and sparsely furnished.

And the vocals, ah, the vocals. I don’t usually like good singers, they make me uncomfortable. Though I know it’s fake, I like the feeling of overt authenticity given by timid, untrained, out-of-tune vocals. Sweeping Promises’ singer, Lira, is the opposite of that: she builds sweet harmonies on top of the jagged instrumentals, stretching her voice with confidence from a lower, almost spoken register to beautifully attuned falsetto and powerful bursts of energy. It’s a ways from what I’m used to appreciating, yet I find it endearing, catchy, and obviously impressive.

The record goes by quick (spins at 45, too) and is easy on the ears. Though definitely equipped with a sweetness and a soft touch, it’s build on a bedrock of rough, gritty sensibility, rooted in the first wave of British post-punk (“Out Again”, one of the best songs on the album), but also in 90s alt-rock (“An Appetite” has a chorus that would’ve broken MTV in 1996). As an old millennial, I feel like this is a record that would appeal to Gen Z listeners, with its nostalgia-tinged sound, its personal, anxiety-soaked lyrics and its quick, straightforward songwriting—that is, if Gen Z listened to independently released guitar-based music, but they don’t, so Sweeping Promises will have to settle for The Quietus’ year-end best-of list or something like that.

Happy 30th @WEEZER!!! I'm a day late because of deadlines! Sorry!!! . I've been a fan since their first album in 1994 and still am! When I need a pick me up, I put on one of their albums to destress. . In 2013, I was fortunate enough to be commissioned by @skyboundent & @bigclutch to design a poster for their 10th anniversary of #RobertKirkman 's comic #TheWalkingDead!!! Big thanks to Dave at @vannenwatches for hooking it up!!! . The project was a TON of fun to do! I basically got to kill @sgs711 @rivers_cuomo #brianbell and #patrickwilson and then reanimate them as #ZOMBIES!!! Thankfully the band had a good sense of humor!!! Originally it was supposed to be 1 poster but I got way too ambitious and pitched the idea of doing a #screenprint poster for each band member. All the while prepping for the con and being filmed for a documentary. Keep reading... . I even got to do a signing with the band minus Patrick @feelitrecords during @sandiegocomicconinternational where they told their fans that I was the new drummer! I had to decline signing any albums that I didn't play on! But I did sign a bunch of posters with the band!!! Photos by Tony Moorman . Afterward, I got to take a bunch of friends to go see the band play live for the party! . At the same time I was being filmed by @t_moorfilms for the art documentary making_it_pictures In that doc, you can watch me nervously sitting between Scott and Rivers signing the poster I designed. The Cowboy, WiFi on the Prairie (Feel It, 2020)

I appreciate hard working punk bands as much as the next guy, don’t get me wrong. But nothing sounds like a band who’s just simply got it. The Cowboy have it. It’s apparent from the first sound that issues from the speakers when you drop the needle on the thing—just the coda of a bass note, like they had already played a song but forgot to hit record. We’ll never know what came before that bass buzzing. But I’ll bet it was great.

Bass and drums carry the heavy load in The Cowboy. They legitimately sound like a landslide, rumbling and exploding continuously, while the guitar jumps from driving riffs to classic-sounding rock’n’roll licks to dissonant 1988-class-of-noise-rock breaks. Though the main hook, for me, is how effortlessly exciting and catchy their songs are.

Bass player Steve Peffer and guitar player Josh Banaszak used to play in the Homostupids, and The Cowboy has a lot in common with that band. They too sound like superintelligent beings from outer space trying to blend in with a caveman crowd. Banging and smashing things around, they end up smashing up the song structure: no choruses, no verses, just full frontal attack, and floating scraps of intros, outros or bridges show up when least expected. They use the same approach when it comes to lyrics: free-associating fragments of thought that successfully build a wacky Cowboy world around the listener. I want to pick a line but I have so many favorites. Fuck it, I’ll go with “Swing low / Smooth Chariot”. Perfection.

One could argue that this is how somebody who writes a review should always feel, but I feel like a fucking tool trying to explain why WiFi on the Prairie is a such a brilliant record. A grunt and a hand gesture should suffice.
