I've been rewatching my favourite cartoon from my childhood, SWAT KATS, with a friend recently and I wanted to draw the best girls having some time to themselves in between all the disasters.

One of the reasons why I have grievances with the “slapping cat ears and a tail on a female character and calling them a mutant” character designs is Swat Kats because it’s so fucking lazy
Tumblr media Tumblr media
If you took off the ears then these would just be normal human women. Meanwhile the males look like actual fucking humanoid cats
Tumblr media
So if the ninja turtles look like this why tf would you make a turtle OC that looks like this ? If the skin wasn’t green it would just be a totally normal human girl ! The point of mutants is that they’re not supposed to look attractive. They’re supposed to be mutants. They’re supposed to be “ugly” not a cute girl with green skin

Fanart from my favorite (early 90's) show, SWAT Kats: The Radical Squadron, and a show where the "kat" in my username came from.
It's a show where two kats, Jake "Razor" Clawson (left) and Chance "T-Bone" Furlong (2nd to right), have double lives as both mechanics in a salvage yard and superhero fighter pilots as the titular SWAT Kats, saving their city, Megakat City, from evil villains. And among their allies are Callie Briggs (the one in the pink dress) and Felina Feral (the one with white in her hair and donning a suit).
This is them in, what I would say, their city's rare "down times" where no one is in danger and the citizens are just having a fun masquerade ball, where Jake and Chance show up in masks to, well, masquerade as the SWAT Kats and hope that no one pieces two on two together.

So you see, Fennel.. [get ready to read this all creator😭😭]
All domestic cats belong to a single species – Felis catus. This is in spite of the great variety of modern cat breeds, from the sleek blue-eyed Siamese and beautifully-spotted Ocicat, to the snub-nosed Persian and the tiny Munchkin. They all belong to the Felidae branch of the animal family tree.
The Felidae is made up of two subfamilies – the Felinae, which includes domestic cats, all the smaller wild cats, and some medium sized beasts such as the Puma, Bobcat, Serval and Cheetah. The other branch of the family, the Pantherinae, contains the big scary ones. We’re talking about Lions, Tigers, Leopards, and Jaguars.
The domestic cat’s wild ancestor is the African Wild Cat, also known as the Near Eastern Cat, (Felis silvestris lybica) – not its very close relative the European Wild Cat (Felis silvestris silvestris). This isn’t just guesswork – the evidence is all there in the cat’s DNA (the genetic coding that makes each species, and each individual within a species, unique). Domestic cats split off from their ancestor around 10,000 years ago. That’s a long history for a family pet!
And in case you start thinking your pet puss is a million miles away from all those lions, tigers and leopards, you may be shocked to hear that kitty shares 95% of her DNA with an African Lion. Not quite as close as humans and Chimpanzees (98.8%), but still very close cousins.
And, when you think about it, cats are just a small pounce away from their wild state, no matter how much they cuddle up and purr in your lap. Hunting and self-sufficiency are second nature to them, as the millions of feral cats around the world show us. The most appealing theory of how and when cats came to be domesticated goes like this. At the dawn of history, African wildcats made a choice to move in with humans, enjoying the relative warmth and comfort. And all they had to do in return was the thing that comes most naturally to them – hunting down mice and rats.
But there are other theories too…
The general ballpark figure for the widespread domestication of cats is around 10,000 years ago. The rise in their fortunes coincides with the rise of agriculture. As soon as humans were storing grain, the rodents had a field day, and the cats had their work cut out. This theory would place domestication at about 12,000 years ago in the Middle East’s “Fertile Crescent” – the cradle of western agriculture, in a crescent-shaped area of fertile land around Egypt and Syria.
The earliest evidence we have of cats being kept as pets is a 9,500 year-old Neolithic grave in Cyprus containing a man and his feline friend. So, by the time of the cat’s most celebrated early heydays in Ancient Egypt (4,000 years or so ago), they were not exactly newcomers to the domestic hearth. But the Egyptians made a particular fuss of their pets, mummifying them, and worshipping the cat goddess Bastet amongst their vast reservoir of deities. Domestic cats – all descended from those African Wild Cat ancestors – arrived in Europe with Greek and Phoenician traders about 3,000 years ago. The Romans carried cats in their baggage wherever they marched. -🌑🐮

a while later... everyone was in front of the city hall again (the Hero team, Help team, Swat kats + Foll and Michelle) gathered and ready to leave...
"yes.. you can bring the citizens back... our problem is over... and we will check the city in case something worse has happened..." Feral spoke to his soldiers on the radio, a little sad because of T-bone
T-bone was still crying a little, but Razor was still by his side, as was Callie.
"do you think he'll be okay...?" asked Letícia, next to Felina who were looking from afar "I hope so... well... I think it's time for you to leave, right...?" Felina said, still quite discouraged, "oh really! Wow, is there any paper there? I wanted to get your uncle's autograph!" Letícia's sentence made Felina laugh, and then blush when she also heard that Letícia wanted her autograph too
Manx and Garlie, on the other hand, talked quite 'intimately' as if they were long-time friends, well, at least the mayor made it seem like that
"I thank you for giving me so much confidence, Garlie!" he said, shaking her hand, while she blushed a lot, being thanked by the mayor, how cool
"ah mayor, it was totally your merit, you don't need to thank me! hehe.." oh the white owl suddenly turned red
Michelle, on the other hand, was preparing to send U-Bone, Blaze and Foll to his dimensions, or the future of their dimension, in the case of U-Bone and Blaze
"Wait a minute, Michelle!" said Foll as he ran to Feral, for a big hug "goodbye dad!"
"I am not your dad!" Feral said blushing, while Felina approached "technically, you are her dad, uncle, hehe"
"bye cousin! bye guys!" Foll gave Felina a hug, and ran to the portal, before giving U-Bone a hug, "give my future self a big hug for me, okay?" and with a big smile, she left
now, U-Bone and Blaze both run to give their dads a hug
"be careful, okay?" Razor said, while Blaze just smiled a lot "okay dad..." Blaze ran to the portal, just waiting for his partner
"dad..." U-Bone hugged him slowly, while T-bone didn't hug him too tightly, until the hug ended "good luck to you, little one, wherever you go..." the hug may not have been much strong, but T-bone's smile was more than genuine, so, U-Bone ran to the portal... and left...
"Well, our turn" Garlie and Letícia approached the rest of the kats
"ahh.. no one has a paper or a pen..." said Letícia, still wanting an autograph
"Letícia, you can ask for an autograph from Feral and Felina from our dimension."
"But I wanted autographs of the originals..."
"Ah, let's go Letícia!"
"bye!"
Garlie and Letícia waved as they entered the portal, and now only Michelle was missing.
"sorry for the mess I made"
"the only thing I hope is that you are arrested in your dimension, Michelle " Feral spoke angrily, this makes the Swat kats laugh a little
"I doubt it, bye bye~" and then, Michelle left...
and now, everything can go back to normal, in Mega Kat City...
some years later...
everything remained the same in Mega Kat City, the bandits arrived, the Swat Kats fought and won, Feral's bravery fell a little in question to the vigilantes, and T-bone slowly got over his violent act
and even Manx became a much more decent mayor, surprising everyone, except Callie, of course, she was more proud of him than surprised, hehe..
"but today the city will succumb... and not even the Swat kats could stop us! isn't it..."
From what appeared to be a hiding place, Dark Kat spoke to himself... until... a Kat, purple skin, black hair, with a blonde streak, ponytail, completely black and gold eyes, a navy blue coat covered her clothing, she had a brave and cute smile...

"daughter...?"

Swat Kats: The Radical Squadron
Hanna-Barbera was arguably in a weird place as a company by the end of the 1980s and the beginning of the 1990s. The 80s had arguably been a huge decade for them in terms of commercial success between yet more Scooby-Doo, revivals of The Jetsons and Jonny Quest, the juggernaut hit of The Smurfs (which inspired its aquatic cousin The Snorks), lots of Yogi Bear content, and, perhaps most bizarrely, straightfaced renditions of Bible stories. But change was in the air. In addition to the merchandise-driven cartoon boom, Disney had charged onto the airwaves with juggernaut hits like DuckTales, Nickelodeon was beginning its Nicktoons program, and the conservatism of the 80s was giving way to edgier programs. Most crucially, media mogul Ted Turner was getting into the animation game via series like Captain Planet and establishing Cartoon Network, where Hanna-Barbera content was a major percentage of the initial programming. In the face of all this, what was the studio’s response? Well, they began to do something they hadn’t done in a long time: experiment.
And thus we come to Swat Kats: The Radical Squadron.
Set in the fictional Megakat City, the show centers on Chance “T-Bone” Furlong (Charlie Adler) and Jake “Razor” Clawson (Barry Gordon). Formerly part of the city’s Enforcers, they were drummed out by Commander Feral (Gary Owens) after an accident he helped cause that wrecked his headquarters and consigned to the scrapyard to help pay off the debt. They decide to create the Turbokat, a truly bitchin’ jet plane, out of discarded Enforcer parts and become the Swat Kats to fight crime on their own terms. Villains they face include Dark Kat (Brock Peters), an imposing Skeletor type at the center of the chase that caused the accident; Dr. Viper (Frank Welker), a mutated mad scientist; the Metallikats Mac and Molly (Neil Ross, April Winchell), gangsters whose brains were transferred to robots after dying in a prison escape; and so on. Aiding the Kats is Deputy Mayor Callie Briggs (Tress MacNeille), the aide to ineffectual Mayor Manx (Jim Cummings, adopting a sloppy W.C. Fields-esque brogue), and eventually Felina Feral (Lori Alan), the commander’s niece.
You may have guessed from the above summary that this is not necessarily the most edifying brain candy or plot-heavy series. No, Swat Kats is of a piece with many other action cartoons of its era. The continuity may exist, but nothing akin to an overarching serial storyline does. We’re in full episodic adventure territory here. Thankfully, on that score, the show does hold up well with distinctive, memorable characters and well-structured half-hour entertainment. The tone is a little more hard-edged, with a rock/heavy metal-tinged soundtrack, high-energy action scenes a-plenty (which got the show into trouble/helped lead to its premature cancellation), and even some mild satirical jabs in the portrayal of Manx, the weak-willed politician du jour.
The characters even have some depth on occasion. Callie gets put in a damsel position at times, but just as often she’s active and engaging in the plot on her own, and MacNeille offers high-spirited work as always. Think a slightly more grown-up Gadget or Babs Bunny. Felina gets some genuinely badass showings for the era, with Alan giving her a cheerful, devil-may-care attitude that makes her intensely likable. And while Feral is a blustery blowhard, he is nevertheless given integrity in defining moments like a response to the Metallikats attempting to buy their freedom with the Swat Kats’ identities: “I don’t deal with scum.” (If anything, he could stand to be given a little more credit at times: hot-tempered and blame-shifting he may be, but collateral damage that results as a byproduct of the Swat Kats’ actions in stopping villains is not an inherently invalid concern). T-Bone and Razor are engaging leads, with a brother-like banter livening things up via the interplay of Adler and Gordon (who offers a growlier spin on his nerdy Donatello excitability). The villains are a lot of fun too, with Peters being a standout thanks to his low, stentorian bass tones, and Ross and Winchell get a lot of mileage out of their squabbling Noo Yawk mobster schtick, as well as some surprisingly genuine affection shown off in outings like “Unlikely Alloys”.
The most striking element of the show, however, remains its look. Shepherded by the French-Canadian Tremblay Brothers, it offers a mix of more typically funny animal designs with anime and comic book leanings, especially in the backgrounds. The cityscapes look more like Frank Miller’s Gotham in their stark, angular colors than your typical generic ‘toon urban environments. This is aided by great animation for much of the series from Japanese studio Mook DLE, who would later go on to do the first four Scooby-Doo DTV movies for Hanna-Barbera. Much of their hallmarks are here in regards to the crisp, fluid character movements and snappy timing on things like effects animation. (Several episodes were also done by Seoul-based studio Hanho Heung-Up, a reliable if unspectacular workhorse; their work is more typical but hardly bad) Like The Pirates of Dark Water, it signified new directions the studio could venture forth in.
And indeed they would, though this show in and of itself signified something of the end of an era. As it was being cancelled, the What A Cartoon shorts program would begin premiering on Cartoon Network, kickstarting the careers of new voices like Genndy Tartakovsky, Van Partible, Craig McCracken, Butch Hartman, and Seth MacFarlane. Swat Kats would live on, though, in a surprisingly robust fandom (which, yes, has quite a bit of overlap with furries) and is currently being revived by the Tremblays with Toonz Media thanks to a successful Kickstarter campaign. Time will tell if it can recapture the weird, wild alchemy of the original series.

Disappointed how Swat Kats has an abundance of Callie and Felina porn fanart but like, only two pieces of fanart of Chance and Jake as a couple.
