The Kremlin has never been especially fond of feminist ideas. More than a decade ago, members of the feminist punk band Pussy Riot were sentenced to two years in prison for performing an anti-Putin song in a Moscow church. But pressure against feminist thought and activity has been ratcheting up. A domestic abuse law introduced in the State Duma in 2019 went nowhere. The next year, authorities designated the prominent Russian nonprofit Nasiliu.net, which supports domestic violence victims, as a foreign agent, a label regularly applied to critics of Mr. Putin’s politics. (Nasiliu.net’s founder, Anna Rivina, was personally deemed a foreign agent.) In 2021, they shut down a major national feminist festival, Moscow FemFest. “They didn’t refer to any laws but simply said, ‘We need to clear the space,’” the festival’s founder, Lola Tagaeva, told me.
When Russia invaded Ukraine in 2022, the Feminist Antiwar Resistance quickly formed and became one of the loudest protest movements in the country. More than 100 of its activists have faced various forms of persecution, the organization says. In one of the most high-profile cases, the artist Alexandra Skochilenko was recently sentenced to seven years in prison for swapping price tags in a St. Petersburg supermarket with statements highlighting civilian deaths in the conflict. Other political and social women’s initiatives have gained momentum since then, including mothers worrying about their sons being sent to war.
This summer, Russia’s health minister, Mikhail Murashko, criticized women putting their education and careers ahead of having children as “improper” and announced a national initiative to control the circulation of abortion-inducing drugs in pharmacies. At least two Russian regions have already outlawed “coercing” women into abortion, and in two other places, annexed Crimea and Kursk, private clinics have nearly stopped providing abortions altogether. Women nationwide have been panic-buying emergency contraception pills amid fears of a national ban.
Until now, the Russian state has typically opposed women’s groups by blocking their efforts to change laws or by issuing “black marks,” such as the foreign agent designation, designed to complicate lives bureaucratically. But a month before Ms. Berkovich and Ms. Petriychuk were arrested, a Russian lawmaker, Oleg Matveychev, claimed he had drafted a bill recognizing feminism as “an extremist ideology.” The bill has not advanced in the Duma.
[...]
Konstantin Dobrynin, a Russian lawyer based in Britain, said that under that law, it is possible that an official charge of radical feminism might stick, given “the darkest times we live in today.” If that happens, he said, it could very likely lead to the criminalization of feminism as an ideology in Russia. It would be, he said, “a witch hunt and the Holy Inquisition in the most literal form.”

Lisbons Feminist Festival 1st edition / March 2018
(click on the image for the facebook event)
Open Call deadline: December 31st 2017
Extension: Until January 7!
Form: https://docs.google.com/forms/d/e/1FAIpQLSfxXw3gqd5UuqBe__kSn_ZbwNUKDBtU_k43Bcwru1mombdtjA/viewform?usp=sf_link
Lisbon’s Feminist Festival is an inclusive, intersectional, self-managed and non-profit festival. It’s first edition will take place in the month of March in 2018. This is a volunteer kind of project organized by a group of people who reclaim and proclaim feminism with very diverse experiences and paths.
You can build the Festival with us, submitting proposals for initiatives through this form: https://goo.gl/forms/GbGFHqDprxrQVIba2
Workshops, debates, concerts, performances, theater, cinema, exhibitions and any form of expression which has feminism and gender equality as an inspiration are welcome. We  will bring together a diverse and comprehensive program, representing  various feminism's, through different experiences, identities, bodies and territories. We hope that all participants will be able to relate themselves with the activities of the Festival and find tools and possibilities of intervention in a safe and open space. Hence, we invite everyone - individuals, groups, associations. Share your ideas and concerns, submit your artistic project, propose a space for discussion, join us in this revolution. We will continue to make  feminism a fight for all, equal opportunities, diversity and  self-determination. Dead line for submission is December 31 (New date is January 7!).
We are also looking for suitable venues to host the Festival's actions. If you happen to be the owner or know of any available venue, please contact us: [email protected]
Important info:
Lisbon’s Feminist Festival will happen every Friday, Saturday and Sunday, through March 2018. The festival last official day is March 25th before Easter holidays.
Activities time frame can vary - from an exhibition which lasts the whole month, a cinema cycle for a weekend or a half hour performance.
We do not create any limitations regarding this. We  will launch a crowdfunding campaign to raise funds, with which we  intend to cover the minimum expenses for carrying out the initiatives.
Thus, it is essential to understand the costs that each activity entails and self-sustainability is a differential factor.
Any activity that incites violence, misogyny, racism, homophobia or trans-phobia will be excluded.
Please share this invitation and if you have any queries feel free to contact us!

CARR Drives Her Ex Insane in “Sarasota” [Q&A]
Tumblr media
Photo: Jon Del Real
The bounce effect of the internet cannot be underestimated, sounds and influences that sink into our linear timelines now seem to be able to reroute, curving back into our existence in unexpected way. CARR counts her pop-punk influences from the early ‘90s as part of her sound and elongated that angsty energy into a series of singles that have started to stir notice amongst many revivalist of that period, us included. Wanting to know more about her latest single before her appearance at FemFest in LA, we reached out to get the inside scoop.
youtube
Ones To Watch: Who is CARR?
CARR: I’m an artist, I write songs, I play shows.
Other than being righteously catchy, what is “Sarasota” all about?
It’s about a time when I was in Sarasota with my ex bf. We got in a massive fight and I sat back manipulatively and kinda drove him to losing his mind for a minute... and punching a hole in the wall.
You mix up a few styles, and have a great bridge, how’d the song composition come together?
We had the song done first without the bridge and it was really trancey and cool. The producer hit me and said I think we should add a bridge and I was down.. I thought it would break up the song nicely with one which it does, and it adds a bit of a powerful moment.
Any collaborators? Who produced the track?
The song was produced by my friend Christian Medice, mixed by Charlie Park and mastered by Ryan Schwabe. It was written by Christian Medice, Cameron Walker and myself.
“Sarasota” has a fresh style that bounces between some of your previous sounds; is this an evolution for you?
I’m not sure it’s an evolution necessarily, but it does stand on its own and is a little bit of a weirder track for me.
Can we expect more of this style in the future, potentially on an upcoming album?
As of right now I don’t have anything like it. I think it will just be a very unique CARR track, haha!
Besides this excellent single, what else should we be on the lookout for?
An EP on the way :) And lots of new music and some shows. Can’t wait to play these songs live.
What’s inspiring you right now outside of music?
Films always inspire me, and of course my main inspiration is always my experiences with people.
It’s nearing the end of Women’s History month, how did that resonate with you?
I’m surrounded by a lot of women in my life and on my team and it’s great. I love women.
Who are your Ones To Watch?
Jack Kay’s is my favorite right now. He’s so real and extremely talented. He’s gonna be big.
