10. January 2024 - A Fine Example of Victorian - What, Exactly?
I had to own this.
The seller of this ca. 1870s ferrotype (tintype) thought it was a feminine-looking man. I disagree. You don't need to watch many films from Germany's Weimar years to know this is a woman. The hair is pulled back and slicked down in a way men didn't do in the Victorian era.
An actress in a role? An amusing inside joke? A gift for a Special Person? A statement of some sort? Feel free to make up your own interpretation of this fascinating image.
Again, I had to own this.

Unretouched original ferrotype of Henry “Billy the Kid” McCarty, c. 1880, wearing a vest over a sweater, a slouch hat and a bandana, while holding an 1873 Winchester rifle with its butt resting on the floor, and his Colt revolver holstered on his left side. (This led historians to believe he was left-handed, but they did not take into account that the ferrotype process produces reversed images. Several historians have written that the Kid was ambidextrous.)

28.August 2022 - New Photographs in My Collection
I’m not a fan of ferrotypes (tintypes) but I saw the young girl and felt she needed a caring home. It is a small image - about the size of a business card. The original is bent and scratched. I have done enough restoration to make her more presentable. The faint colour in her cheeks was hand-applied by the original photographer some 150 years ago.
The sepia print is by an unknown, but talented amateur photographer. I purchased it because she looks so happy. It is about 3x4 inches/7.5x10 cm in size and mounted on sturdy card stock.

(*) Ballet in one act with choreography by Roland Petit, libretto by Jean Anouilh, scenery & costume design (including the ballet's cat masks) by Leonor Fini. It tells the story of a musician who falls in love with his beautiful cat Agathe, who has assumed semi-human form. Agathe tries to be faithful to her human lover but is lured away by the sound of tomcats and the call of freedom. She leaps off the rooftops and the musician falls to his death as he tries to grab hold of her. She falls after him and they are united in death. | src The Oxford Dictionary of Dance
