The event saw guests make cocktails, eat delicious canapés and write their sustainable intentions on the installation. Your Honey is Quiet

even our loudest honey cannot sing like the honey back home

a non-alcoholic cocktail, built in the glass it is drunk in, joining its kin in the @worldsbeyondpod unofficial cookbook

🍯 1/2 tbsp of even our loudest honey (garlic honey with rosemary, spruce tips and pine tips)

🍋 a squeeze of a lemon wedge

🧊 stir well over a large ice cube

🌲 fill most of the glass with chilled fevertree tonic

🌸 top with your favourite kombucha (i used one called nettles and petals from cultured kombucha)

✨ garnish with some more drizzles of even our loudest honey and a thick twist of lemon

I invented a great non-alcoholic cocktail last night on the fly and I think y’all should know about it. I made it in a 3-person batch by kind of eyeballing things so these measurements are not super precise, unfortunately. Also it needs a name!

Ingredients

3 parts sugarcane limeade; I think it was around 2 cups (I buy this from the farmer’s market, you can probably make your own or try a storebought limeade)

2 parts ginger beer (I used a whole small bottle of Fevertree)

1/2 tablespoon of rosewater

1/2 tablespoon of Sauvignon blanc white wine vinegar (this has to be a vinegar with flavor- try a champagne vinegar, or a smaller amount of balsamic if you don’t have a good white wine vinegar.)

1 shake of salt

1 sprig of rosemary, crushed in your hand

A light sprinkle of nutmeg (like 1-2 zips of fresh nutmeg on a microplane per person)

Assembly:

Combine liquid ingredients in a big cocktail shaker or medium pitcher. Stir.

Add salt.

Stir with crushed rosemary sprig and leave sprig in.

Sprinkle nutmeg.

Carefully pour (using cocktail strainer if it helps) into 3 glasses. Ice and cocktail cherry is optional.

UK Stocks Hit New High, GBPUSD Steady

UK blue-chips hit new highs on Thursday as investors digested a big batch of corporate earnings, as well as interest rate decisions from the European Central Bank (ECB) and, overnight, by the US Federal Reserve.

After the Fed, as expected, kept its monetary policy unchanged on Wednesday night, the ECB reduced its key interest rate by 25 basis points to 2.75%, also as anticipated, on the back of figures showing the eurozone economy flatlined late last year.

Meanwhile, Fed chair Jerome Powell dialled back the hawkish tone taken on inflation in the US central bank’s latest policy statement. In his post-meeting press conference, Powell clarified that the change in statement language was not a signal, adding that the Fed sees no cause to adjust rates again until data shows risks to the job market or a fresh drop in inflation.

US data on Thursday saw fourth-quarter economic growth miss expectations, with gross domestic product up by 2.3% over the final three months of 2024, a marked slowdown against the 3.1% seen over the third quarter, and lower than analysts’ expectations of 2.7%.

Meanwhile, US initial jobless claims dropped by 16,000 to a seasonally adjusted 207,000 for the week ended January 25, well below forecasts for 220,000 claims.

On foreign exchanges, sterling was mixed, gaining 0.08% to 1.2461 versus the US dollar after the hawkish Fed statement on inflation, but slipping 0.01% against the euro to 1.1948 following the ECB news.

US stocks were higher in morning trading on Thursday as investors assessed Jerome Powell’s less hawkish comments, as well as quarterly earnings reports last night from Big Tech companies, including Tesla, Microsoft, and Meta Platforms, with iPhone maker Apple due to report after the Wall Street close on Thursday.

At the stock market finish in London, the FTSE 100 index was up 1.1% at 8,646, a closing high and just below a new all-time peak at 8,655, having breached the 8600 level for the first time ever. Meanwhile, the FTSE 250 index jumped 1.2% to 20,805.

Precious metals miners Endeavour Mining jumped 7.2% after it reported solid 2024 production results. The boost also came after gold prices hit a record high.

The busy day for blue-chip earnings also saw Shell add 2.6% as the oil major maintained its US$3.5 billion pace of share buybacks despite weaker-than-expected fourth quarter earnings, which reflected write-offs in its exploration business and lower crude prices.

Wealth manager St James’s Place added 10.2% as it saw its assets under management hit a record last year, with 2024 net inflows of £4.33 billion, after the fourth quarter brought in £1.5 billion.

Airtel Africa gained 9.0% as the mobile telecoms firm reported a strong third-quarter operating performance and launched a second $100 million (£80 million) share buyback.

But BT Group shed 1.6% as the telecoms giant said third-quarter revenues had fallen amid weaker phone sales and a struggling business unit.

And Sage Group shed 0.6% as the accounting software firm only maintained its revenue forecast for fiscal 2025 even after posting 10pc growth in first-quarter underlying revenue.

Elsewhere, FTSE 100-listed discount airline easyJet rose 4.3% and British Airways-owner IAG added 1.2%, supported by London airports expansion plan hopes.

But Wizz Air dropped 5.5% as the FTSE 250-listed group cut its annual net income forecast for the second time in six months, as it grapples with rising costs related to the grounding of planes due to engine problems and economic uncertainties.

Meanwhile, on AIM, Fevertree Drinks jumped 20.2% after signing a long-term strategic partnership in the US. As part of the deal, brewer Molson Coors is to buy an 8.5pc stake in the posh tonic firm for £71 million in cash, with the proceeds set to be returned to shareholders via a share buyback programme.

Day 77-78 Argan Oil & Eid & back to Marrakesh

After a late breakfast on the upper deck of Riad Baladin we’re in search of an authentic argan oil shop, Essauoria was listed as the place to purchase it.  Many stores dilute with water. Felix, the Manager, gave us instructions and instead of showing the two taxi drivers I asked the full instructions, they saw half, as I’d folded the paper in half 🤦‍♀️

A young man approached us and said he’d heard us ask two drivers something and could he help.  He lives in Switzerland and also had a place here and a car.  He offers to drive us. And as I explained to Rose, I just didn't randomly jump in a car with a dude, I did a quick risk assessment! But he couldn’t find it either, again with only half the instructions! Websites and instagram pages led us down more rabbit holes.  He worked out, as I’d seen when I originally google maps the name, it was back in the Medina 🥴😂

We stocked up, careful not to go overboard given the weight! The authentic product is about the same price as the crappy stuff I buy at the supermarket at home, 250 dirham for 250mls.

The rest of the day was spent browsing the shops and grabbing lunch at KSOU rooftop.  The food was good, but we ordered too much. Rose wasn’t keen to come to Carrefour, 2.8kms each way for oat milk and tonic! I walked the back streets and excuse my frankness, it is a “shit hole”! Eva did offer up an alternative destination and perhaps I should have taken her advice, I think it was near Agadir. Carrefour was well stocked and slightly exciting to be honest.  They had mounds of spices, cheese, olives, Moroccan sweets, even fevertree tonic! I forgot to check for coffee pods 🤦‍♀️

Rose decided to come with me for a walk along the beach front.  It was certainly more picturesque than the back streets, but windy and bloody cold. 

Given many restaurants were closed, dinner was at Brunch & Co and it was disappointing. It was my issue in making assumptions, even with google translate. I wanted a vegetable tagine and mistook tagine with egg for vegetable and egg.  It was three fried eggs with some cherry tomato and red onion cooked in the tagine 😂 with more bread 😂 and my fourth egg for the day. Rose enjoyed her quesadilla with fries.

I had a very bad sleep, fever, headache, body aches and pains and a very slow start to day 78, it was hard to stay upright. Luckily breakfast was served to 12 and checkout was 12.

Felix warned us about the sights we might see on the streets. Mainly sheeps' heads being burnt. It was certainly an interesting experience, many huge bonfires with charred sheeps' heads, sheeps' skins in wheel barrows (later we learned they'd be taken to the tannery), sheeps' poo on the streets, burnt hooves and all sorts of bits that the stray cats would no doubt sort out. One man apologised for the site and his mate and I both said at the same time there was no need for an apology, it's their celebration. The more distressing sight was heading around the corner to go back to our Riad and seeing a young woman trying to sweep away the thick blood. Felix was surprised at this as well. He said the sheep are killed on the rooftop and the blood is washed down the drains onto the streets. We had to step into it to get inside.

Riad Baladin is owned by a German beer brewer who has two other hotels, one in Tanzania and one in Italy and they are renovating a restaurant nearby, but not for serving beer!

We caught the bus back to Marrakesh to witness the same sights. Even our driver said it was crazy. We stay at the Riad for dinner, aside from seeing the butchers cutting up the remains of the sheep for sale, there is nothing else opened.

honestly im not a big gin fan lol i prefer whiskey or vodka, but im drinking a premade aviation with larios gin. its pretty good! very fruity, poured it over ice too. do you have any brand recs/favs tho? i might try more stuff with gin when i get the chance since i like this one - 🐶

oh i love aviation! i’m biased tho, since it’s made in pdx and i’m originally from there.

hmm, my typical go-tos are usually hendricks or empress (it’s blue!!! and once you add tonic or citrus it turns pinky purple). but when i’m feeling bougie i like roku or nordes.

honestly though, the biggest thing is making sure you have the right tonic. i’m a fevertree guy all the way.
