Okay, we're really deep into flu / covid / other-virus season now, so let's do something about that sore throat and congestion.
Mock Toddys are on the menu.
Just take a cup of hot water, add a squirt of lemon juice (as much as you like), a plop of honey (again, as much as you like), and a sprinkle of either cinnamon or cloves or nutmeg (or two or all three), then just mix that stuff up and sip away.
If you want, you can make it with hot green or black tea instead of the water, but I'd suggest caffeine-free if you're planning on sipping before bedtime.

Llet merengada is one of the three most popular summer drinks in the Catalan Countries, after orxata and granissat. It's a cold drink made of sugared milk aromatized with lemon and cinnamon.
You can buy it in any ice cream shop (gelateria) or orxateria, but it's also easy to make at home, so here's the recipe!
Ingredients:
500 ml of milk
1 lemon's peel
1 cinnamon stick
75 g (=5 spoonfuls) of sugar (you can use more or less, depending on how sweet you like it)
2 egg whites
Cinnamon powder
Preparation:
Pour the milk in a pot at medium heat, add sugar, the cinnamon stick and the lemon peel (try to use only the yellow part, leaving out the white part, because the white is sour).
Before it starts boiling, move the pot out of the heat and let it infuse and cool down for at least 15 minutes.
Strain the milk through a sieve and cool it in the fridge.
If you want the simplified version, skip to step number 5. To follow the full recipe, once the milk is completely cold, freeze it. In order to obtain the desired texture, once it starts crystallizing, quickly blend it in the blender, then repeat this same process at least twice with an interval of about 2 hours.
Beat the egg whites to stiff peaks, then add two spoonfulls of sugar. (To be able to do this well, the eggs should be at room temperature).
Add the egg whites to the icy milk and sprinkle cinnamon powder on top. Serve it immediately. When you drink it, it should be cold, and it's alright if there's a little bit of frozen pieces (shaved-ice style) floating around but it shouldn't be frozen.
Variations: you do other flavours. You can add a few drops of coffee or change the cinnamon and lemon for others like orange and clove or cardamom and ginger.

i was looking for non-alcoholic "phony negronis" which are a specific brand shipped on short notice, and in my search i was introduced to Sanbitter which is a bitter aperitif soda (also non-alcoholic). and im so mad this is the first time i heard of them because they're so tasty and such a tiny little bottle. now i just gonna find a cheaper place to source them in nyc because i'm sure some italian grocery store stocks em
Tumblr media
it also makes me wish "bitter sodas" were more popular here because low abv bitter drinks made with seltzer are very enjoyable and sometimes i want that minus the part where you get buzzed

‘Eyeballs’ !
Ingredients  (1x):
2 – 20 ounce cans of longan fruit in syrup
6 ounces fresh blackberries
½ cup blackberry preserves or jam
1 cup cherry juice chilled
1 cup white grape juice chilled
1 cup cranberry juice cocktail chilled
1 cup longan juice reserved from the canned longan
8 cups ginger ale chilled
12 ounce bag of frozen blueberries
Instructions:
Drain the longan and reserve the juice. Set both aside.2 – 20 ounce cans of longan fruit in syrup
Pour the blackberries into the bottom of a large pitcher. Break up the blackberries using a long wooden spoon.6 ounces fresh blackberries
Add the blackberry preserves/jam and mix into the berries.½ cup blackberry preserves or jam
Pour in the cherry juice, white grape juice, cranberry cocktail juice, and reserved longan juice, mix well.1 cup cherry juice,1 cup white grape juice,1 cup cranberry juice cocktail,1 cup longan juice
Pour in the ginger ale and give a light stir.8 cups ginger ale
To make the eyeballs, place one frozen blueberry inside of one longan.12 ounce bag of frozen blueberries
The punch can be served with the eyeballs in the punch pitcher, in individual glasses, or served on the side.
Notes:
Chill, Chill, Chill: Make sure to use chilled juices and ginger ale for a refreshingly cold punch.
Size Matters: When making ‘eyeballs,’ make sure to match the size of the blueberries with the longan fruit. They should fit snugly.
Berry Beware: Frozen berries can stain your hands. Use gloves if you want to avoid smurf fingers! Then again, maybe that’s perfect for the spooky season!
More Color: For a punch with a more vibrant hue, feel free to add a drop or two of food coloring.
Adults Only: Want to make an adult version? Replace half of the ginger ale with champagne or prosecco for a spirited twist.
Ice It Right: If you’re using ice cubes, opt for fun shapes like skulls or pumpkins to keep the Halloween spirit going.

I invented a great non-alcoholic cocktail last night on the fly and I think y’all should know about it. I made it in a 3-person batch by kind of eyeballing things so these measurements are not super precise, unfortunately. Also it needs a name!
Ingredients
3 parts sugarcane limeade; I think it was around 2 cups (I buy this from the farmer’s market, you can probably make your own or try a storebought limeade)
2 parts ginger beer (I used a whole small bottle of Fevertree)
1/2 tablespoon of rosewater
1/2 tablespoon of Sauvignon blanc white wine vinegar (this has to be a vinegar with flavor- try a champagne vinegar, or a smaller amount of balsamic if you don’t have a good white wine vinegar.)
1 shake of salt
1 sprig of rosemary, crushed in your hand
A light sprinkle of nutmeg (like 1-2 zips of fresh nutmeg on a microplane per person)
Assembly:
Combine liquid ingredients in a big cocktail shaker or medium pitcher. Stir.
Add salt.
Stir with crushed rosemary sprig and leave sprig in.
Sprinkle nutmeg.
Carefully pour (using cocktail strainer if it helps) into 3 glasses. Ice and cocktail cherry is optional.

I love making cocktails, and bitter ones are right up my alley. I've tried non-alcoholic substitutes for liquors so i can serve teetotaling guests something special, and so far gin is the only one they seem to get pretty close. But recently I tried these two - Pathfinder which is an herbal bitter, and Roots Divino, which is a vermouth with the alcohol removed. Both contain 0% alcohol.
These are great. In fact if you mix these (one ounce each) on the rocks with tonic and a lemon peel it makes a delicious little spritz
