How lock-in hurts design
Tumblr media
Berliners: Otherland has added a second date (Jan 28) for my book-talk after the first one sold out - book now!
Tumblr media
If you've ever read about design, you've probably encountered the idea of "paving the desire path." A "desire path" is an erosion path created by people departing from the official walkway and taking their own route. The story goes that smart campus planners don't fight the desire paths laid down by students; they pave them, formalizing the route that their constituents have voted for with their feet.
Desire paths aren't always great (Wikipedia notes that "desire paths sometimes cut through sensitive habitats and exclusion zones, threatening wildlife and park security"), but in the context of design, a desire path is a way that users communicate with designers, creating a feedback loop between those two groups. The designers make a product, the users use it in ways that surprise the designer, and the designer integrates all that into a new revision of the product.
This method is widely heralded as a means of "co-innovating" between users and companies. Designers who practice the method are lauded for their humility, their willingness to learn from their users. Tech history is strewn with examples of successful paved desire-paths.
Take John Deere. While today the company is notorious for its war on its customers (via its opposition to right to repair), Deere was once a leader in co-innovation, dispatching roving field engineers to visit farms and learn how farmers had modified their tractors. The best of these modifications would then be worked into the next round of tractor designs, in a virtuous cycle:
https://securityledger.com/2019/03/opinion-my-grandfathers-john-deere-would-support-our-right-to-repair/
But this pattern is even more pronounced in the digital world, because it's much easier to update a digital service than it is to update all the tractors in the field, especially if that service is cloud-based, meaning you can modify the back-end everyone is instantly updated. The most celebrated example of this co-creation is Twitter, whose users created a host of its core features.
Retweets, for example, were a user creation. Users who saw something they liked on the service would type "RT" and paste the text and the link into a new tweet composition window. Same for quote-tweets: users copied the URL for a tweet and pasted it in below their own commentary. Twitter designers observed this user innovation and formalized it, turning it into part of Twitter's core feature-set.
Companies are obsessed with discovering digital desire paths. They pay fortunes for analytics software to produce maps of how their users interact with their services, run focus groups, even embed sneaky screen-recording software into their web-pages:
https://www.wired.com/story/the-dark-side-of-replay-sessions-that-record-your-every-move-online/
This relentless surveillance of users is pursued in the name of making things better for them: let us spy on you and we'll figure out where your pain-points and friction are coming from, and remove those. We all win!
But this impulse is a world apart from the humility and respect implied by co-innovation. The constant, nonconsensual observation of users has more to do with controlling users than learning from them.
That is, after all, the ethos of modern technology: the more control a company can exert over its users ,the more value it can transfer from those users to its shareholders. That's the key to enshittification, the ubiquitous platform decay that has degraded virtually all the technology we use, making it worse every day:
https://pluralistic.net/2023/02/19/twiddler/
When you are seeking to control users, the desire paths they create are all too frequently a means to wrestling control back from you. Take advertising: every time a service makes its ads more obnoxious and invasive, it creates an incentive for its users to search for "how do I install an ad-blocker":
https://www.eff.org/deeplinks/2019/07/adblocking-how-about-nah
More than half of all web-users have installed ad-blockers. It's the largest consumer boycott in human history:
https://doc.searls.com/2023/11/11/how-is-the-worlds-biggest-boycott-doing/
But zero app users have installed ad-blockers, because reverse-engineering an app requires that you bypass its encryption, triggering liability under Section 1201 of the Digital Millennium Copyright Act. This law provides for a $500,000 fine and a 5-year prison sentence for "circumvention" of access controls:
https://pluralistic.net/2024/01/12/youre-holding-it-wrong/#if-dishwashers-were-iphones
Beyond that, modifying an app creates liability under copyright, trademark, patent, trade secrets, noncompete, nondisclosure and so on. It's what Jay Freeman calls "felony contempt of business model":
https://locusmag.com/2020/09/cory-doctorow-ip/
This is why services are so horny to drive you to install their app rather using their websites: they are trying to get you to do something that, given your druthers, you would prefer not to do. They want to force you to exit through the gift shop, you want to carve a desire path straight to the parking lot. Apps let them mobilize the law to literally criminalize those desire paths.
An app is just a web-page wrapped in enough IP to make it a felony to block ads in it (or do anything else that wrestles value back from a company). Apps are web-pages where everything not forbidden is mandatory.
Seen in this light, an app is a way to wage war on desire paths, to abandon the cooperative model for co-innovation in favor of the adversarial model of user control and extraction.
Corporate apologists like to claim that the proliferation of apps proves that users like them. Neoliberal economists love the idea that business as usual represents a "revealed preference." This is an intellectually unserious tautology: "you do this, so you must like it":
https://boingboing.net/2024/01/22/hp-ceo-says-customers-are-a-bad-investment-unless-they-can-be-made-to-buy-companys-drm-ink-cartridges.html
Calling an action where no alternatives are permissible a "preference" or a "choice" is a cheap trick – especially when considered against the "preferences" that reveal themselves when a real choice is possible. Take commercial surveillance: when Apple gave Ios users a choice about being spied on – a one-click opt of of app-based surveillance – 96% of users choice no spying:
https://arstechnica.com/gadgets/2021/05/96-of-us-users-opt-out-of-app-tracking-in-ios-14-5-analytics-find/
But then Apple started spying on those very same users that had opted out of spying by Facebook and other Apple competitors:
https://pluralistic.net/2022/11/14/luxury-surveillance/#liar-liar
Neoclassical economists aren't just obsessed with revealed preferences – they also love to bandy about the idea of "moral hazard": economic arrangements that tempt people to be dishonest. This is typically applied to the public ("consumers" in the contemptuous parlance of econospeak). But apps are pure moral hazard – for corporations. The ability to prohibit desire paths – and literally imprison rivals who help your users thwart those prohibitions – is too tempting for companies to resist.
The fact that the majority of web users block ads reveals a strong preference for not being spied on ("users just want relevant ads" is such an obvious lie that doesn't merit any serious discussion):
https://www.iccl.ie/news/82-of-the-irish-public-wants-big-techs-toxic-algorithms-switched-off/
Giant companies attained their scale by learning from their users, not by thwarting them. The person using technology always knows something about what they need to do and how they want to do it that the designers can never anticipate. This is especially true of people who are unlike those designers – people who live on the other side of the world, or the other side of the economic divide, or whose bodies don't work the way that the designers' bodies do:
https://pluralistic.net/2022/10/20/benevolent-dictators/#felony-contempt-of-business-model
Apps – and other technologies that are locked down so their users can be locked in – are the height of technological arrogance. They embody a belief that users are to be told, not heard. If a user wants to do something that the designer didn't anticipate, that's the user's fault:
https://www.wired.com/2010/06/iphone-4-holding-it-wrong/
Corporate enthusiasm for prohibiting you from reconfiguring the tools you use to suit your needs is a declaration of the end of history. "Sure," John Deere execs say, "we once learned from farmers by observing how they modified their tractors. But today's farmers are so much stupider and we are so much smarter that we have nothing to learn from them anymore."
Spying on your users to control them is a poor substitute asking your users their permission to learn from them. Without technological self-determination, preferences can't be revealed. Without the right to seize the means of computation, the desire paths never emerge, leaving designers in the dark about what users really want.
Our policymakers swear loyalty to "innovation" but when corporations ask for the right to decide who can innovate and how, they fall all over themselves to create laws that let companies punish users for the crime of contempt of business-model.

What do ranger schools teach? Besides basic survival, first aid and training their pokemon to certain task to help?
Lmao OTHER than all of the things you mentioned, which are absolutely covered in most ranger schools, it actually depends a bit on the school. The OG ranger school, located in the Almia region (also where HQ is), is the main hub for training rangers on proper use of a Capture Styler, although there are a couple others in different regions that also offer these courses.
The basic certification course has 3 main prongs – the ranger program (obviously), the operator program, and the technician program. I feel like the first 2 are pretty obvious – ranger program is to teach you how to be a ranger, and the operator program teaches you how to be an operator. Operators are the ones who monitor and receive reports, consolidate data, and dispatch rangers where they are needed in field. If you’re out on a serious mission they will also monitor you pretty closely and provide guidance or call for emergency services if necessary. The technician program teaches you about ranger tech- mostly the styler, but also the software programs that operators use and our environmental database. It’s pretty competitive to get into that one. I thiiiiink Honey (@freerangeranger) will probably touch on these in more depth in her presentation at Foster Island, so if you’re curious I’d advise you to tune in over there.
Most school also offer the field ranger course, which takes 3 months and grants you the necessary certification to become a field ranger. Prospective field rangers study ecological reports, environmental sciences, pokemon biology, and in theory gain a baseline understanding of the law. I know it sounds intense, but I did it and honestly it was pretty easy. The hard part is qualifying for the course in the first place.
Beyond that it is pretty specific to the school you attend. Hoenn’s ranger school, as an example, runs a specialization course for anyone who wants to become a marine ranger, since they have so much gotdamn water. Paldea’s ranger school is just getting set up, but they will be one of the lucky few that will offer the capture styler certification course, as well as emergency de-escalation courses for encountering wild tera pokemon.
Ranger schools also offer professional development for existing rangers, and workshops run by the union for the public at large. They play a pretty important role in educating the public at large and helping teach people how to Not Be Idiot Dipshits while out and about. I’m sure I’m missing a bunch of stuff, it’s been a hot minute since I was in ranger school.

Emerging Specialisations in BBA and B.Com: You Shouldn’t Ignore
In today’s fast-changing world, it’s not enough to simply choose a degree—you also need to choose the right direction within that degree. That’s where specialisations come in. They help students focus on a particular field, build relevant skills, and find roles that align with their strengths and interests.
Two of the most popular undergraduate programs—Bachelor of Business Administration (BBA) and Bachelor of Commerce (B. Com)—now come with several specialisations that open up focused career opportunities.
Tumblr media
BBA: A Foundation for Future Leaders
A BBA specialisation allows students to dive deeper into specific areas of business rather than staying limited to general management. Whether your child is drawn to people, numbers, or systems, there’s a path to match.

This stream is great for students interested in trade and maritime operations. It covers areas like port management, shipping regulations, and global logistics.
Careers: Port Operations Manager, Documentation Executive, Freight Forwarding Agent, Marine Logistics Coordinator.
Human Resource Management
If your child enjoys working with people and solving internal business challenges, this specialisation is a perfect fit. It teaches the essentials of recruitment, team management, employee engagement, and labour laws.
Careers: HR Executive, Talent Acquisition Associate, Payroll Officer, Training and Development Coordinator.
Finance
Students who enjoy budgeting, data analysis, and economic planning often thrive here. The focus is on financial reporting, investment strategies, and corporate finance systems—skills that companies value highly.
Careers: Financial Analyst, Risk Management Assistant, Investment Operations Associate, Junior Accountant.
Marketing
Creative minds who enjoy consumer trends, brand building, and storytelling often do well in marketing. This stream focuses on market research, advertising, digital strategy, and communication planning.
Careers: Marketing Coordinator, Brand Executive, Social Media Associate, Client Servicing Executive.
Supply Chain Management
For students who think in terms of process and efficiency, this specialisation covers procurement, inventory control, and distribution systems. It's a great option for those interested in manufacturing, e-commerce, or logistics.

Studying BBA in Chennai gives students the advantage of learning in one of India’s fastest-growing business hubs, with access to industries that support these specialisations.
B. Com: Commerce Meets Career Readiness
Choosing a B Com specialisation helps students move beyond basic accounting and build targeted skills that prepare them for the job market or higher studies.
Commerce
This traditional specialisation focuses on trade, business practices, and financial systems. It suits students who want to explore multiple roles across government services, administration, or general business.
Careers: Business Assistant, Administrative Executive, Office Coordinator, Public Sector Exam Aspirant.
Accounting & Finance
One of the most in-demand paths, this stream is designed for students aiming for roles in taxation, auditing, and corporate finance. It’s also a great stepping stone for CA and CMA aspirants.

Computer Applications
This modern specialisation blends IT with commerce. Students learn how to use software tools to manage data, handle transactions, and support tech-enabled business functions.

Choosing a BCom in Chennai gives students access to leading educational institutions and industry connections, especially in finance, IT, and marketing sectors.
Why Online Learning Is Gaining Importance
Online learning is no longer seen as an alternative—it's a modern approach to higher education that meets the evolving needs of today's students. It enables access to quality education without the limitations of location, offering structured programs from reputed universities through digital platforms.
While learning from home and managing personal schedules is certainly a benefit, the real strength of online education lies in its ability to deliver well-designed, career-focused courses supported by expert faculty and interactive resources.
An online BBA degree with specialisation gives students the same academic depth as a traditional program, with the added ability to apply business concepts in real-time if they’re already working or involved in entrepreneurial activities. With specialisations in areas like HR, marketing, or supply chain, students can gain targeted skills while building a strong foundation in business management, preparing them for leadership roles in a range of sectors.

Mastering the Road from Behind the Desk: A Guide to Truck Dispatch Training
Tumblr media
Are you looking to start a rewarding career in the logistics and transportation industry? Then truck dispatcher training might be the perfect first step. With the growing demand for efficient freight movement, becoming a skilled truck dispatcher opens the door to a stable, high-paying, and flexible career — no CDL required!
In this blog, we’ll walk you through what truck dispatcher training involves, why it’s important, and how to choose the right truck dispatcher course to launch your career.
What is Truck Dispatching?
Truck dispatching involves coordinating the movement of freight and ensuring timely delivery. A dispatcher acts as the communication hub between the trucking company, drivers, and clients. Their responsibilities often include:
Assigning loads to drivers
Planning efficient routes
Monitoring weather and road conditions
Ensuring compliance with trucking regulations
Handling emergencies and last-minute changes
It’s a fast-paced role that requires strong communication skills, problem-solving abilities, and a solid grasp of logistics.
Why is Training Important?
While it's possible to learn dispatching on the job, formal truck dispatch training programs offer a structured path to competence and confidence. Training helps you understand:
The basics of the trucking industry
DOT (Department of Transportation) regulations
Load boards and how to use them
Negotiation techniques with brokers and shippers
Software and technology tools like TMS (Transportation Management Systems)
Training also prepares you for real-world challenges, like resolving delivery issues or managing driver schedules effectively.
What Does a Truck Dispatch Training Program Cover?
A typical course may include:
Industry Overview Learn the fundamentals of logistics, freight types, and industry terminology.
Dispatching Process Step-by-step guide on assigning loads, route planning, and managing paperwork.
Using Load Boards Hands-on training with platforms like DAT, TruckStop, and others to find and post loads.
Compliance & Safety Understanding FMCSA regulations and ensuring your operations are legal and safe.
Customer Service Skills Communicating effectively with drivers, clients, and brokers.
Software Training Instruction on popular TMS tools and apps used in the field.
Real-World Scenarios Case studies and mock dispatching exercises to build confidence.
Who Should Take This Training?
Truck dispatch training is ideal for:
Aspiring dispatchers with no experience
Truck drivers looking to transition off the road
Entrepreneurs starting a dispatching business
Fleet owners wanting to manage their own dispatch
No prior logistics experience is usually required, making this a great entry point into the industry.
How to Choose the Right Training Program
When selecting a training provider, consider:
Course Content – Does it cover everything from basics to advanced topics?
Instructor Experience – Are they industry professionals with real-world knowledge?
Hands-On Practice – Are there practical exercises or simulations?
Support & Resources – Does the program offer mentorship or business startup help?
Certification – Will you receive a certificate upon completion?
Online programs offer flexibility, while in-person classes may provide more direct mentorship.
Final Thoughts
Truck dispatching is more than just answering phones and assigning loads — it’s about strategy, communication, and efficiency. With proper training, you can gain the skills and confidence to thrive in this high-demand career. Whether you're looking to join a company or start your own dispatching service, investing in quality truck dispatch training is a smart move toward a successful future in logistics.

Optimizing Operations with Concrete Pump Dispatch Software
In today’s competitive construction landscape, efficiency and precision are paramount. With projects becoming more complex and deadlines tighter, managing logistics effectively is essential for concrete producers and contractors alike. One of the most game-changing technologies in this field is Concrete pump dispatch software. This sophisticated tool is transforming how businesses schedule, track, and manage concrete pumping operations, ensuring that every pour happens exactly when and where it should.
Concrete pumping involves numerous variables, including equipment availability, job site conditions, traffic delays, and customer schedules. Traditionally, coordinating all these elements required a significant amount of manual communication and paperwork. However, the introduction of digital dispatch solutions has revolutionized this process. Dispatchers can now manage multiple jobs in real-time, track the location and status of equipment, and adjust schedules on the fly—all through a centralized platform.
The most significant advantage of Concrete pump dispatch software is its ability to provide a bird’s-eye view of all ongoing operations. Dispatchers no longer have to rely on phone calls or handwritten notes; instead, they have access to GPS-enabled tracking and automatic updates. This real-time visibility enhances decision-making and reduces downtime, helping to keep projects on schedule and within budget.
Moreover, these software solutions are designed to integrate seamlessly with other construction management tools. This ensures that data flows smoothly across departments—from sales and logistics to billing and reporting. By consolidating all relevant information into one interface, teams can collaborate more effectively, reduce errors, and enhance productivity across the board.
One of the key features of modern dispatch software is route optimization. By analyzing traffic patterns and delivery requirements, the system can recommend the most efficient routes for pump trucks. This not only minimizes fuel costs but also helps in reducing the carbon footprint of operations. Additionally, automated scheduling features ensure that resources are allocated based on availability and priority, allowing companies to handle more jobs with fewer delays.
In the mid of implementing these technological advancements, many companies are also investing in Products for concrete producers that complement dispatch software. These products include moisture sensors, batch control systems, and mobile apps that keep workers connected with the office and the job site. When used in tandem, these tools create a fully integrated production and delivery ecosystem that increases transparency and accountability.
Customer satisfaction is another area where this technology shines. With real-time updates and automated notifications, clients are kept in the loop about the status of their delivery. This proactive communication reduces misunderstandings and builds trust between the service provider and the client. Furthermore, data collected by the software can be used to generate detailed performance reports, which are invaluable for analyzing trends and identifying areas for improvement.
In an industry where time truly equals money, every minute saved can significantly impact the bottom line. Whether you’re a small operation or a large-scale enterprise, investing in Concrete pump dispatch software can streamline your workflow, improve coordination, and enhance service quality. The combination of real-time data, automated scheduling, and robust integration capabilities makes it an indispensable tool for modern concrete businesses.
As the construction industry continues to evolve, those who leverage smart technologies will lead the pack. Embracing Products for concrete producers that support automation and data-driven decision-making is not just a strategic move—it’s a necessary step toward future-proofing operations. Concrete pumping is no longer just about machinery and manpower; it’s about smart planning, precise execution, and leveraging technology to deliver excellence on every pour.
