Thank you to all of the humans who save/foster animals, providing them with chance after chance... and for those who rescue/adopt them into safe and loving environments. This "little guy", Buka (aka Boo Boo) was found by animal control (with a micro-chip) and the previous caregivers no longer wanted him. Then he was adopted by a man in DC who kept him in his basement... and then no longer wanted him, so he was picked up by a client of mine from his house... He would have been euthanized if he had returned to the shelter, being a large dog at the age of 6. They’re a misunderstanding with how today’s version of the Staffordshire Bull terrier is viewed, as they are still labeled fighting dogs at rescues and such. The reality the breed today is only a slice of the dog that once ruled the school yard and it is more of a show and pet dog than anything else. . . The early crosses of Bull and terrier dogs were not the stout, proportioned dog we see today but a rugged, tough, hard as nails, very skilled and game dog. These dogs were bred for performance, not looks. . . To create the Staffordshire Bull terrier a cross between a Bull and a Terrier happened. The cross was popular and gained popularity rather quickly. What it produce was a prototype, the ancestral foundation stock for todays Staffordshire Bull Terrier, the Bull Terrier, the American Pit Bull Terrier and American Staffordshire Terrier all sharing the common ancestor, the “Bull and Terrier” . . Before the 19th century Bull baiting, Bear baiting and cock fighting was as common as apple pie. It was purported at the cattle markets, dogs (bulldogs) were set upon bulls to tenderize the meat, but this was a myth, a way to get around those that opposed the blood sports. The real reason was to provide entertainment for crowds that would gather around to watch the show. . .
