If The Left Hand of Darkness ever gets adapted to the screen, I think the way they can visually distinguish people in Kemmer would be really easy actually.

You know how in Hollywood every actor is made to look hot? Like, regardless of how much it would logically make sense in the universe their character exists in, they’ll have perfectly manicured eyebrows, immaculate hair styling, flawless skin, etc. That’s just the accepted default look of a Main Character.

So for the people on Winter, you just do the opposite of that, and make a “no-makeup” kind of natural look be the default. Granted there’s gonna be some level of makeup for a film production, but aesthetically speaking, making them look like they’re all just Some Guy. Then when they go into Kemmer, give them the standard hot makeup. You don’t have to swing full yassifying in intensity (though I would enjoy that too), but it would be a subtle enough shift to read as a Distinct Change.

Then you cast someone unreasonably attractive and made up to be so as Genly Ai and the audience will immediately understand why they’re all baffled by how he seems to be perpetually in heat.

This Springtrap had a long time to think about what he’s done, and he’s decided to not bother anyone in that building… For now. He’ll be back by Night 4, if the haunted house crew is smart enough.

I wonder if @incorrect-fnaf-quotes has suggestions for a nickname for this guy. I was going to call him “Boardwalk Springtrap”, but ehh. I’ll have to double-check to see if Fazbear’s Fright was supposed to be around a boardwalk.

     It's a bit of an open secret that the mages of Kinloch Hold are fairly freeform and loose when it comes to their approach to and views on sex. "Everybody was kissing everybody" and all. And to an extent, that's true; despite the presence of a Chantry within the tower, there's a distinct lack of adherence to typical social expectation when it comes to sexual or romantic relationships. I wouldn’t go so far to say that it’s “free love”, as it’s directly in response to restrictions around what relationships they can have, but sex in itself among each other is something they don’t really see the need to restrict for themselves. It's typically casual, but open. Unless you're hurting someone in the process, or are particularly devout, none of the mages really attach shame to it(that includes those who choose to not participate). And since they aren't actually allowed to marry beyond a technicality, they don't view its supposed sanctity as a barrier to find comfort with each other, and there is an open and deep investment in its education as a result. But that's really only part of it.

Absent “standard” relationships, it’s more common to just be very physically affectionate among each other. You see this most in people who very clearly grew up in the Circle; apprentices tend to hang off one another, open clinging of hands or laying over one another - physical affection is straightforward. Even older mages demonstrate levels of this with casual touch and proximity towards each other, though it’s muted through the years of introducing “professionalism” to the lifestyle. It’s far less likely to express romantic attraction to a Fereldan mage than it is comfort around familiars and peers, and as it’s something everyone does, it’s not gonna be sourced to any one person you're connected to if you attract the wrong kind of attention.

But the tales heard outside of Kinloch Hold are much wilder than the truth of it. The Chantry being as it is and its countering views of the subject, there's a degree of catastrophizing from those who are allowed to leave the Tower -- servants, sisters, templars and the like – surrounding the ‘strange and wanton’ practices of the mages on the lake, and thus tales and rumors circulate and grow to outlandish proportions. Hence stories you hear from certain assassins of ritualistic orgies under the full moon. So to outside ears there’s more spins of ‘dens of debauchery’ to couple with the whispers of demons and foul magics.
