To describe the drama in other words, Shen Qingqiu is a model horse finishwork expert who mentors the Qing Jing amateur customizers. He's been jealous of Luo Binghe because Binghe's painting skills keep placing higher than his in model horse shows. When sqq finds out Binghe has been consorting with the dark side (kitbashing models) he uses it as an excuse to kick him out of the customizers yahoo group and get him banned from the hotels in Lexington Kentucky so has nowhere to stay (Yue Qingyuan runs the biggest hotel chain in Kentucky in this au) and also doesn't drive him home. Now that Binghe is stuck in hell (Kentucky USA) he fully masters extreme customization using knock off factory defect models because he can't afford high quality ones. When his mastery is complete, he applies to the Huan Hua model horse show group which gets him back into Breyerfest to show his ultimate creation to spite Shen Qingqiu: Xin Mo the life sized miniature curly pony statue

Breyerfest Best Customs Contest

 A contest that Breyer held prior to Breyerfest was the Best Customs Contest. People were able to submit their customs into three categories. GOOD NEWS EVERYPONY @snommie has enlightened me to some delicious recent hobby drama of absurd proportions!!

So to contextualize, the Breyer company is The pinnacle of the model horse hobby, and just like comic book nerds have comic-con and manga nerds have comiket, model horse nerds have Breyerfest, held in Kentucky annually to celebrate all things toy horse and real horse. It is, by nature of being held by a toy company, an all-ages show with advertisement material mostly targeting kids who want to meet famous horses and such, but perhaps more prominently there's also a dedicated fanbase of intensely dedicated adult hobbyists who go to collect exclusive special runs from the show, bid on ridiculously expensive OOAK models for benefit, etc.

Though most of these people are just collectors, there's also a significant community of artists that customize models in various ways-- kitbashing them, repainting them, even full resculpts, etc. For these people, Breyerfest's top event is the Best Customs Contest (BCC). The entrants to this contest can run in 5 categories: finishwork, which is only repainting an original plastic model into a maximally realistic horse portrait with no sculptural additions; fantasy, which is kind of just get wild with it (this year I saw one of the submissions was someone who turned their models into skeleton horses, which is pretty cool you have to admit); performance, which is where you create a realistic diorama of a horse working (being ridden, jumping, etc.); theme, which this year was "dress to impress", showcasing people's abilities to make scale replica tack (bridles and saddles, etc.); and the main source of our drama-- the most extreme custom class, a class dedicated to having as little of the original model show while resculpting, kitbashing, etc etc. until you essentially make your own original model using a Breyer base.

Now, this extreme custom (and to a lesser extent, the fantasy) category has been a sore spot for traditionalists in the hobby. Some have gripes with how it somewhat erases the original model at the core of model horse collecting, some feel it presents an unfair advantage as the judges are more likely to be swayed by an entry with a ton of multidisciplinary work behind it and therefore ignore other entries that may have been equally as skilled, just with less modifications. All of this and more have been brought up in the discourse around this year's entries:

Of particular fuss this year and within the comments was this piece, a life-sized fully furred realistic miniature curly pony sculpture entered into the most extreme custom category.

It does indeed have a Breyer model somewhere in the structure of it, or else it wouldn't qualify, but some still argue that it's a bit like cheating to make such a drastically new art piece to submit to a model horse customization contest (personally, I think its in the MOST EXTREME contest category and it does indeed deserve a win for being. the MOST EXTREME).

There's also a fair bit of controversy over the winners, as many of them have worked for the company in the past or are otherwise well known within the model horse art industry, sparking a debate on how accessible this contest is for the majority of (unknown) model horse customizers.

Another thing I've failed to mention is that the winners of the BCC earn an exclusive prize model for their efforts-- this is highly, highly coveted by OF (original finish-- the way the model is sold directly from the company) collectors, and some feel that these well-known artists are monopolizing the prize models just to resell them to OF collectors to get a fat check at the end of the day. Interesting stuff going on for sure
