...I’ve been on the internet too long. I remembered the insects firebrat and instantly came up with a horny monstergirl manga premise called “An Insect woman is living in the boiler room.”

Hey everyone, it's been a while but here I am with a new touhou fic! It's a sequel to Awake Away.
Missed Connections by mona_lizard
3k words - mainly gen with pre-Reimu/Akyuu (I'm soft-launching one of my favourite rarepairs... hiii)
"After the Great Barrier fell, Hieda no Ajuu had been too busy conspiring to find and destroy her life's work to worry about Reimu Hakurei. She knew there was a thin chance the former shrine maiden was still alive, and that was pretty much it."
I hope you enjoy it! I am considering making this a series so if anyone is interested in it don't be afraid to come and talk! 😊

mr bogleech today at work I escorted a crawly bug out of the office. i thought it was an earwig, the receptionist thought it was a silverfish. what's the difference between the two??? (note: this bug appeared reddish brown to me. are silverfish actually silver???)
They are unrelated! A silverfish in extremely ancient insect, like, sharing anatomy with some of the earliest things we could ever even CALL insects in the whole fossil record!
Tumblr media
They eat simple starches, which is why they chew on paper. In the wild they'll eat mold and detritus in environments like caves or dry, hollow tree trunks!
Tumblr media
Earwigs are also really ancient, but still a bit newfangled than silverfish, much more recognizable as something in the same phylum as animals like crickets, beetles or wasps. They're opportunistic omnivores, able to eat plant matter, but also prone to hunting live insects!
But there are ALSO members of the silverfish group that are differently colored!
Tumblr media
The "rustier" looking ones are referred to as Firebrats!

Is this a firebrat or a silverfish it looks like both ? Location: Massachusetts
Mmmmmm looks like a four-lined silverfish to me but tbh they are not at all my area of expertise! But the coloring doesn't look like what you'd see on a common firebrat to me.

I am trying to make peace with the fish

He has been there all day, still alive just chilling
Aw, I hope he has much more chilling ahead of him! Some silverfish facts:
Fact number one: They're shimmery like fish because they also have little scales, just like a butterfly or moth's wings!
Tumblr media
Tumblr media
Fact number two: Even though they're technically insects, they're not really related to most of the insects you know. Almost all other insects are descended from a winged lineage, but the silverfish never evolved wings! Since their adult stage doesn't have wings (which are very intensive and difficult to grow and molt), silverfish can continue to molt throughout their lives, so they don't have to worry about losing limbs or antennae.
Fact number three: Just as they prefer cool environments, their Bizarro cousins the firebrats prefer it hot, and you can find them near furnaces and boilers!

Saw your post about the silverfish and wanted to ask: how does one keep them as pets?
not kept Ctenolepisma before, but I’ve put it into an empty house centipede cup. given they enjoy the same basement habitats, flat climbing surfaces, moderate humidity, and a firm substrate seem appropriate. other zygentomans like firebrats are somewhat frequently cultured as feeders, but those need very high heat, low humidity, and basically just thrive in egg carton with a little supplemental food

back at it with the ento brainrot, this time two really basal orders! archaeognatha (bristletails) and zygentoma (silverfish, firebrats)
Bristail (Ground) lives on rocky shorelines and uses its tail to sweep sand away. why does it do that? simple, it needs to eat metal to evolve!
Pestalot (Ground/Steel) have a steel-hard exoskeleton gained from consuming so much metal. though they're tough as hell, they aren't very strong offensively, so their protective nature makes them much more of a nuisance than a threat
their names come from bristle + tail and pest + lancelot. bristail is based on jumping bristletails, with a tail stylized to look like an archaeology brush. pestalot is based on silverfish and knights. its antennae are not only a reference to the plumes on knights' helmets, but are also based on moths', since both insects are known household pests

Found this silverfish in my bathroom last night.
Funny thing about silverfish, they alongside the firebrats are the secondmost basal of all insects, hence why they lack wings without losing them secondarily.
