Beautiful 1860 home in New Orleans, LA has 7bd, 6ba, 5,033 sq ft, $1.998m. The home has been renovated, and it's a nice reno, but owners think that they have to paint everything gray, today.
Enter a side hall.
The sitting room is deep gray, molding and all. I would've liked to have seen that wainscoting in it's original wood, b/c of the medallions. Or least painted in a lighter color to make them stand out.
Not sure if they opened 2 rooms up, here, to give it a more open floor plan.
It's a lovely home. Beautiful floor to ceiling windows in the dining room, and an original fireplace.
A hall with glass doors opens to the other rooms and the back yard.
The kitchen is spacious enough for a very large dining table/island combo.
Nice counters and 2 tone cabinetry.
The pantry was turned into a bar and they even installed a tap.
Nice sunny family room has an original brick fireplace and doors to the patio.
The primary bedroom also has large windows that let in natural light, plus an original fireplace. I wonder if the windows were once doors. I would think that they'd open to the terrace.
I really like the ensuite. But, instead of picking up the blue in the tiles, they picked up the stupid gray. Love the tub and sink.
The 2nd floor terrace is so pretty.
Spacious secondary bedroom also has an original fireplace.
Nice renovated shower room.
There's a full kitchen up here, too.
Plus, another beautifully renovated shower.
The listing says that it's a single family home, but this looks like an apt.
It has a living room/kitchen, bedroom and a shower.
In this back hall there's a freezer and another shower.
Yards are usually small, but this property is long and has a lovely pool, patio and garden.
Plus a covered deck.
And, more garden.
Lovely ivy covered front porch.
The home also features gated off-street parking on a 5,985 sq ft lot

NEVILLE WAKEFIELD
- STAND by ART -
He brought Richard Prince and Martin Kippenberger together, developed Matthew Parney's Renaissance art into a Swiss parallel art, freed Helmut Lang's sculptures from the white cube, encouraged a reevaluation of Jack Smith, and brought together George Harms and 20 other artists to expand the possibilities of art - all six of these were handled by a curator named Neville Wakefield, and if you don't know about him, you're missing out.
NEVILLE WAKEFIELD - CURATED WORK
HELMUT LANG
SCULPTURES

"Sculptures" exhibition featuring more than 20 of Helmut Lang's latest sculptures
"The ideas of this show is what is appropriate space to show his work"
"The concept of this show is to give his work a place that is worthy of it."
After making his debut as a fashion designer in Paris Fashion Week in 1986, Helmut Lang launched his own brand, which caused quite a stir. With his conceptual forms that swept the fashion scene in the 1990s and his designs based on simple colors such as white, black and gray, Lang was called the "flagship of minimalism" and made many achievements in the fashion world. "I was a big fan of Helmut Lang myself. I loved not only his clothes, but also his marketing methods, such as his advertising visuals that used Robert Mapplethorpe's photographs," recalls Neville Wakefield. However, in 2005, Lang suddenly announced his retirement. He set up an atelier in Long Island, New York, and decided to focus on his work as an artist.
In 2008, he joined the German company "Kestner Gesellschaft".
The exhibition "Alles Gleich Schwer" held at the New York Stock Exchange was Lang's second solo exhibition. It featured sculptures of three decapitated eagles. Three years later, he held "MAKE IT HARD" at the Fireplace Projects gallery in New York, where he cut up 6,000 pieces of clothing he had designed and archived, and exhibited them as cylindrical sculptures. Both exhibitions were curated by Neville.
"I had heard the name Neville Wakefield since I was a designer. But I think the first time I met him was at the exhibition "NEXT EVER AFTER" at The Journal Gallery in New York in 2006-7," Lang recalled. After the interview with Neville, Lang said, "I'm looking forward to seeing him again.
He asked him to "curate an exhibition."
Lang continues, "When we were discussing "Alles Gleich Schwer" in my studio, we decided to actually display all the works. We placed the works according to the drawings and discussed the proportions of each piece, and whether this size was really okay. I think that was the beginning of us getting to know each other better." Furthermore, Lang likened his current relationship with Neville to "like a pair of gloves," telling us that they are irreplaceable to each other.
And in May of this year, the exhibition "Sculptures" was held at the "24 Washington Square North" gallery in a quiet residential area of Washington Square, and was an installation of more than 20 of Lang's latest sculptures.

Sculpture that explores the boundary between abstract and concrete expression

The materials used in the work include rubber, iron, and plaster.

Industrial waste reborn as art pieces

A series of works installed in a remodeled townhouse

"I leave Neville enough room for his curation" by Helmut Lang
"We try to give him as much freedom as possible in curating the exhibition, and we try to create the space for that." (Helmut Lang)
The monochrome sculptures stand like totem poles in a friendly and casual space that was renovated from the first floor of a 19th century townhouse. The space is minimalist and conceptual. Each sculpture is made from materials such as rubber, steel, plastic, styrofoam and plaster, and Lang has created them by applying tar and paint. "When I saw these sculptures in Helmut's studio, I was blown away by their beauty, and I wondered where would be the best place to exhibit his artwork, which was created in this rich natural environment. The last thing I wanted to do was to just shove them in a white box," says Neville.
"Helmut, like Matthew Barney, is an artist who faces art with extraordinary determination and creates works.
I feel very happy to be involved in the creations of people like that.”
Lang also expressed his trust in Neville's curation, saying, "I trust Neville's sensibilities, so we try to give him the space to curate as freely as possible."
"Working with Neville is always fun. He picks up on every little detail I give him and reflects it without wasting anything. He always prioritizes the artist's intuition and executes and shapes the idea without interfering with other ideas. There are very few people who can do things at such a high level. I am always amazed by his curation. It is easy to understand why he is so trusted by other artists.
He's already my friend. There's no one better to work with than a good friend."

Hi Belle! For the sweet and intimate prompt ask, I'll go with 2:
Character B peeling back the neck of Character A’s turtle neck sweater to trail gentle kisses down their neck.
(Diana/47 plz 🥰)
HAPPY BIRTHDAY MYTHY!
You're such a lovely person and I hope you have the most wonderful day!
This was going to be a drabble. And then 47 decided that it wasn't.
Rated T, bordering on M, for a non-sexual undressing scene.
--
Turtle
It's well after midnight when he arrives back at the safehouse. The lights are on, but the vision in front of him stops 47 in his tracks. Diana is dozing on the sofa, obviously having failed in trying to wait up for him. There's a forgotten half-ful cup of tea on the side table along with her cell phone and a novel he can't immediately identify. On the kitchen counter, he spots a note: heating went out. welcome home?. Beneath the two lines, Diana has drawn a small heart.
As quietly as he can, 47 moves his suitcase to the kitchen. He can unpack tomorrow morning, preferably after he's figured out what's wrong with the central heating. Starting a low fire in the fireplace isn't too noisy, and it'll warm the room right up so he doesn't have to wake Diana in the cold, so he does just that.
It's only now that the fire's crackling quietly that he realises Diana is wearing one of his sweaters, a navy turtleneck that looks far better on her than it ever has on him. Smiling, he kneels in front of the couch and carefully touches the back of her hand. Diana's eyes flutter open. First she blinks in confusion as her sleepy brain figures out what she's seeing, then she all but throws herself into his arms.
"Welcome home," she whispers. "Missed you."
"Bed?" he asks, and Diana nods, but then she notices the fire.
"Would be a waste. You just lit that." She motions towards the fireplace.
"And I can light it again tomorrow. Come." 47 quickly extinguishes the flames, before rejoining Diana. She's so tired she can barely stand up -- knowing her, she's probably stayed awake for pretty much his entire trip. She wants to make sure he has backup if he needs it, and now that they're flying solo, backup means her. Without giving it much further thought, 47 scoops her up in a bridal carry and carries her upstairs.
"I can walk," she protests weakly.
"Sure."
47 gingerly lowers Diana onto their bed. She sits up and pulls her knees towards her chest, watching him. Diana should get ready first, 47 decides. He carefully pulls the turtleneck to the side so he can trail the softest kisses down the back of her neck, and he feels rather than hears her chuckle. Her bun is undone quickly with the release of her hairclip, letting her hair tumble down her back. 47 liked her short coupe, but he adores her long hair. Slowly, he undresses her and helps her into her nightdress while she pulls her hair into a ponytail.
"I don't like having it--"
"In your neck, I know." He kisses her temple. Once she's comfortably installed on her side of the bed, a warm turtle beneath layers of bamboo and wool, he takes a two-minute shower -- just long enough to wash the grime of the airplane off -- and joins her in bed.
"I love this on you." Diana sleepily paws at his T-shirt, a white Sea Island cotton one she bought him last month, to replace the ones she had "confiscated" from him -- aka moved into her side of the walk-in closet. It wouldn't surprise him if this one were to eventually end up there as well.
Diana shuffles and shifts until she's in his arms, her ear pressed against his chest.
"Welcome home, darling," she mumbles, already halfway to Dreamland again.
"Sleep well," he replies. Smiling, he gazes down at the serene face of his handler, his other half, his wife, his Diana at complete peace.
He doesn't know what he did to get so damn lucky, but he's holding on to her with both hands and never letting go.

Timeless Luxury: Marble Countertops in Mississauga Homes
When it comes to bringing elegance and sophistication into your kitchen or bathroom, marble countertops are a clear favorite. Known for their luxurious appeal, soft veining, and classic charm, marble has been used in high-end homes and buildings for centuries. For homeowners in Mississauga, Ontario, marble offers the perfect combination of natural beauty and long-lasting value.
If you're considering an upgrade to your kitchen or bathroom surfaces, this blog will explore the benefits of marble countertops, how to maintain them, and where to find high-quality marble options in Mississauga, including from the trusted experts at Elite Stone.
Why Choose Marble Countertops?
Marble is a metamorphic rock formed from limestone under extreme pressure and heat. Its elegant appearance comes from its natural veining and distinctive coloration. No two marble slabs are the same, giving every countertop a one-of-a-kind look.
Unmatched Elegance
Marble countertops exude luxury. Their soft sheen and unique patterns make them a centerpiece in any room, whether it’s a traditional kitchen or a spa-inspired bathroom.
Cool Surface Ideal for Cooking
Marble naturally stays cooler than other stones, making it ideal for baking and cooking. Pastry chefs, both professional and amateur, love working on marble countertops for this reason.
Timeless Style
Unlike trend-based materials, marble has remained popular for centuries. Investing in marble is investing in a style that never fades.
Natural and Unique
Marble offers natural charm that engineered surfaces can’t replicate. Each slab tells a different story through its veining and subtle color shifts.
Marble in Modern Mississauga Homes
As Mississauga continues to grow and evolve, so does its design landscape. Modern homes in the area increasingly incorporate natural materials like marble to achieve a clean, sophisticated look. Whether it’s used in new builds or home renovations, marble adds value, style, and character.
In Mississauga, popular uses for marble include:
Kitchen islands and countertops
Bathroom vanities
Fireplace surrounds
Wall accents or backsplashes
Pair white Carrara marble with dark cabinetry for bold contrast, or choose Calacatta marble with gold veining for a warm, luxurious feel.
Choosing the Right Marble
There are several types of marble to consider for your project:
Carrara: Soft white or gray with fine veining. Elegant and classic.
Calacatta: Bolder veining and brighter white background. More dramatic and high-end.
Statuario: A blend of Carrara and Calacatta with unique patterns.
Crema Marfil: Beige tones, ideal for a warmer look.
When you’re investing in marble, it’s essential to choose a reliable supplier who offers quality slabs and professional installation.
Where to Buy Marble Countertops in Mississauga
If you're searching for premium marble countertops in Mississauga, look no further than Elite Stone. Known for their exceptional craftsmanship and wide selection of stone materials, Elite Stone is a trusted name in the Greater Toronto Area.
Here’s why homeowners in Mississauga trust Elite Stone:
Extensive selection of marble slabs in various colors and finishes
Knowledgeable staff who can guide you in choosing the best material
Precision fabrication and expert installation
Transparent pricing and excellent customer service
Elite Stone’s showroom in Mississauga offers a hands-on experience where you can view full slabs, get professional advice, and visualize how different marbles will look in your home.
How to Care for Marble Countertops
While marble is beautiful, it does require some maintenance to keep it looking its best:
Daily Cleaning
Use a soft cloth and a pH-neutral cleaner or simply warm water and a mild dish soap. Avoid harsh chemicals and acidic cleaners like vinegar or lemon juice.
Sealing
Marble is a porous stone and should be sealed regularly (usually once or twice a year) to prevent staining and etching.
Protecting the Surface
Use cutting boards and trivets to avoid scratches and heat damage. While marble is heat-resistant, direct contact with hot pots can damage the surface over time.
Immediate Spill Cleanup
Be proactive about spills—especially from acidic foods like wine, citrus, and tomato sauce—as they can etch the surface if left untreated.
With proper care, marble countertops will continue to look stunning for decades.
Marble vs. Other Countertop Options
While marble is often compared to granite, quartz, or porcelain, it remains unique in its elegance and history. Granite offers durability and scratch resistance, while quartz provides a low-maintenance alternative. Porcelain brings modern aesthetics, but marble remains unmatched in its natural, artistic appeal.
If your goal is to create a showpiece in your home that is both functional and stunning, marble should be at the top of your list.
Final Thoughts
Marble countertops are more than just a surface—they're a statement of luxury, taste, and timeless design. For homeowners in Mississauga, Ontario, marble is a smart choice that adds lasting beauty and real estate value.
Whether you're designing a contemporary kitchen, upgrading a bathroom, or just want to add a touch of elegance to your home, Elite Stone is your trusted partner. Visit https://elitestone.ca/ to browse their impressive marble selection and book a consultation with their expert team.
With the right material, proper care, and skilled installation, your marble countertops can become the showpiece of your home for years to come.

Calacatta Quartz Slab | Luxurious With Lasting Durability
Calacatta Quartz Slab are hastily becoming one of the maximum sought-after materials in current-day indoors layout. Known for his or her putting beauty and super time-honored performance, the ones engineered stone surfaces deliver the traditional beauty of Italian marble into houses and business regions with introduced sturdiness and simplicity of protection.
What Is Calacatta Quartz?
Calacatta Quartz is a person-made ground material that replicates the appearance of natural Calacatta marble—a splendid and expensive marble range that originates from the Carrara location of Italy. Unlike marble, which is porous and calls for everyday sealing, Calacatta Quartz is non-porous, making it rather evidence in competition to stains, scratches, and bacterial boom. Why Porcelain Ledger Panels Are the Smart Choice for Modern Spaces
When it comes to enhancing your interiors or exteriors with timeless style and unmatched durability, few materials rival the charm and versatility of porcelain ledger panels. Whether you're updating a fireplace, adding texture to a feature wall, or revamping an outdoor façade, these sleek and sophisticated panels deliver both beauty and function.
In this blog, we’ll dive deep into why porcelain ledger panels are becoming the go-to design choice for homeowners, designers, and contractors across the U.S. We'll also explore how they compare to traditional ledger panels and offer inspiration on where and how to use them in your next renovation project.
What Is a Porcelain Ledger Panel?
A porcelain ledger panel is a tile that mimics the natural, rugged beauty of stone while offering the enhanced performance and low-maintenance benefits of porcelain. It is manufactured using high-quality porcelain material that’s fired at extremely high temperatures, making it non-porous, stain-resistant, and incredibly strong. These panels are designed to look like stacked stone, slate, or quartzite, and are typically used to create dramatic wall accents both indoors and outdoors.
Porcelain ledger panels are a modern alternative to natural stone ledger panels, offering similar visual appeal but with added durability and ease of installation.
Why Choose Porcelain Over Traditional Stone Ledger Panels?
Natural stone ledger panels have long been popular for their rustic charm, but porcelain alternatives bring several added advantages:
1. Low Maintenance
Porcelain doesn’t absorb water, which means you won’t have to worry about sealing it regularly or dealing with mold and mildew. Cleaning porcelain ledger panels is as simple as wiping them down with a damp cloth—ideal for busy households or commercial spaces.
2. Consistent Quality and Finish
Natural stone can vary greatly in color and texture, which isn’t always desirable in modern design. Porcelain ledger panels offer consistency, making it easier to plan your project and achieve a cohesive look.
3. Lightweight and Easier to Install
Porcelain panels are generally lighter than natural stone, making them easier to handle, cut, and install. This can reduce labor time and costs, especially in larger projects.
4. Weather Resistance
Porcelain is frost-resistant and UV-stable, meaning it won’t fade in the sun or crack in cold weather. This makes porcelain ledger panels ideal for exterior applications like outdoor kitchens, pool walls, or patio accent walls.
Stunning Applications of Porcelain Ledger Panels
The design possibilities with porcelain ledger panels are nearly endless. Here are just a few stunning ways to incorporate them into your home or commercial space:
🔥 Fireplace Surrounds
Transform your fireplace into a stunning focal point by cladding it in a sleek, modern porcelain ledger panel. The natural stone look adds warmth and depth, while the porcelain material ensures durability against heat and smoke.
🛁 Bathroom Accent Walls
Create a spa-like atmosphere by using porcelain ledger panels behind a soaking tub or in a walk-in shower. Their moisture resistance makes them perfect for high-humidity areas.
🏠 Exterior Façades
Boost your home’s curb appeal with a stylish exterior ledger panel installation. Porcelain panels can withstand the elements and maintain their beauty year-round.
🪟 Interior Feature Walls
Make a bold design statement in your living room, dining area, or office by installing a ledger panel feature wall. It’s a great way to introduce texture and visual interest without overwhelming the space.
🍔 Outdoor Kitchens & BBQ Areas
Porcelain ledger panels are tough enough to handle outdoor conditions, making them a fantastic choice for BBQ islands, grill surrounds, and exterior bars.
Choosing the Right Porcelain Ledger Panel for Your Style
From sleek, contemporary grays to earthy, natural tones, porcelain ledger panels come in a variety of styles to suit any aesthetic. Some popular styles include:
White or Cream Panels – Perfect for a minimalist, modern look.
Rustic Browns and Tans – Ideal for traditional or farmhouse-inspired spaces.
Slate Gray and Charcoal – Great for industrial or urban chic designs.
Marble-Look Porcelain Panels – Offer a luxurious touch without the high maintenance.
When choosing a porcelain ledger panel, consider the size of the space, lighting, and your overall color scheme. Most panels are designed to interlock seamlessly, giving the appearance of natural stacked stone without visible grout lines.
Tips for Installing Porcelain Ledger Panels
Installing porcelain ledger panels can be a straightforward process if done correctly. Here are a few tips to ensure a smooth installation:
Start with a Clean, Level Surface: Make sure your wall is clean, dry, and level before beginning installation.
Use the Right Adhesive: Choose a high-quality thinset mortar that is suitable for porcelain tiles and can handle the panel’s weight.
Plan Your Layout First: Dry-lay the panels on the floor to get a sense of the pattern and to minimize cuts.
Cut with a Wet Saw: A diamond blade wet saw will give you clean, precise cuts without chipping the porcelain.
Seal the Grout (If Used): While most porcelain ledger panels are designed for dry-stacking, if you do use grout, seal it to protect against staining.
For best results, hiring a professional installer familiar with ledger panel systems can save time and prevent mistakes.
Porcelain Ledger Panels: Style Meets Strength
In summary, porcelain ledger panels offer the perfect blend of style, performance, and versatility. They give you the high-end look of natural stone with none of the hassles, making them a smart choice for homeowners, builders, and designers alike. Whether you're renovating a single wall or redesigning your entire exterior, these panels provide a transformative impact that’s hard to beat.
Don’t settle for outdated materials or high-maintenance options. Upgrade your space with the enduring beauty and modern convenience of porcelain ledger panels—and enjoy a finish that’s built to last.
Final Thoughts
As the demand for durable, design-forward materials grows, more people are discovering the advantages of using porcelain ledger panels in their homes and businesses. Their ability to mimic natural stone, resist damage, and suit virtually any style makes them an investment in both form and function.
If you’re considering a wall makeover or exterior update, give serious thought to adding a ledger panel to your design plan. And when you're ready, explore our selection of premium porcelain ledger panels that deliver quality you can see and feel.

The Usurper-Chapter Forty One
Summary: Lilah McNamara stole things for a living. It was tedious work and often dangerous, which made it just exciting enough to keep her interested. After botching a routine job, Lilah finds herself standing amid monsters. Wholly unprepared for the horror of living under Amaru’s reign, Lilah decides to use her well honed skills to thwart the queen’s plans and prevent the end of the world.

Lilah sat on the new couch, wishing she had a napkin to tear apart just so she could have something to do with her hands. She should be exhausted after spending the last twenty four hours cleaning the cabin from top to bottom. Instead, she was filled with nervous anxiety that kept prompting her about little things that could still be done. She could use a toothpick to scrape the gunk from around the sink. She could also find the little brush at the bottom of the linen closet and sweep debris from the window sills. She could pull open every cabinet and wipe down the inside.
It wasn’t worth it. The house was spotless. Lilah used just about every ounce of cleaner, four rolls of paper towels, and two large garbage bags to bring the place up to her standard. No, not to her standard. Her mother’s standard. The lower floor wasn’t entirely changed by the remodel, but the differences could not be overlooked. Adding a layer of drywall dust would just be adding insult to injury.
She got up and rocked forward onto her knees in front of the hearth. On the way, she snatched up the lighter sitting beside the fireplace. Lilah turned on the gas and lit it, watching as the flames crackled to life. She remained there, kneeling before the fire, for a little while. Watching the flames’ familiar sight and feeling its ambient heat soothe her nerves enough that her hands stopped shaking.
Standing, Lilah turned to look around the room yet again. All the bullet holes were covered and there was new plaster on the fireplace. The front door was solidly closed, keeping out the cool afternoon air. Through the entryway to the kitchen, freshly lacquered cabinets gleamed next to the newly installed window. On the right, the new refrigerator peeked out. It wasn’t the same model as the last one, but it fit the frame of the cabinetry. It even sort of matched the other appliances. Kind of. If she squinted.
The island had to be replaced in totality. It had taken way too much damage to be saved. Lynn wanted to do the whole thing in wood, but Lilah asked him to use laminate so that it would match the living room a little better. There was nothing she could do about the floors. They didn’t make the style of flooring she grew up with anymore. According to Lynn, it was probably discontinued for being full of asbestos. Lilah compromised and chose a tile that she hoped wouldn’t draw too much attention.
What she knew was definitely going to draw too much attention was the couch. And, less so, the rug in front of it. The couch’s color didn’t match the rest of the house and it didn’t have a single worn spot. It was as shiny and new as the cabinets. Unfortunately. Lilah dropped down onto it with a deep breath. The couch might not match the rest of the room, but it was a hell of a lot more comfy than the last one. And, it wasn’t full of bullet holes.
Angling on her hip, Lilah pulled her phone from her pocket and tapped the screen. Her parents would be arriving any minute. Lilah had no idea how Brasa managed to keep them away while Lynn worked his magic, but she couldn’t put off a visit any longer. Tomorrow morning, she and Brasa would fly South. As they traded the cold for heat, they would also be trading one problem for another.
A knock at the door kept her from dwelling too long on what waited for her following the plane ride. Lilah turned her head to stare at it, hearing her mother’s warm laughter through the wood. She put thoughts about Benny away to review in the morning. Right now, Lilah wanted to show her parents the all the new shit Lynn put in the house. She stood up, smoothed the invisible creases in her jeans, put on her best smile, and went to answer the door.
Her parents were standing on the porch, turned away from her. In the second or two before they realized she’d opened the door, Lilah caught her father give her mother a conspiratorial nudge. It wasn’t much more than a shifting of his weight into her mother’s center of gravity, but the sight of it left no doubt of how long the couple had been together. The little nudge was just too familiar. Too practiced. Lilah’s mother laughed, low and girlish, before swatting at her father’s shoulder. Her father threw back his head and laughed. He pulled Lilah’s mother under one arm and kissed her temple fondly.
Smiling for entirely different reason, Lilah stepped out of the cabin and set her foot on a loose board her father never got around to fixing. The ensuing creak alerted her parents to her presence and they turned to greet her enthusiastically.
“Hi!” they called out in unison.
Lilah lifted a hand, “Hello. How are you?”
Her mother stepped forward and kiss her cheek, “We’re good. And you?”
“Not so bad. Come in, come in.”
She ushered them inside, watching their faces carefully for their initial reactions. Her mother shrugged off her coat and hung it up on the coat rack next to the door. Lilah watched her turn and scan the living room, moving slowly from one side to the other. She wasn’t frowning. There was no crease between her brows. Both good signs.
Lilah glanced quickly at her father. He, too, removed his coat and began to look around. She followed him a few steps into the room, folding her hands in front of her to keep them still. Her father scanned the room from ceiling to floor and back again. Then, he put his hands on his hips and gave a short nod. Lilah let out a relieved breath. It was as good an approval as she was going to get.
“Who did you get to do the work?”
“There’s a contractor, Lynn, who was recommended.”
Her father’s eyes narrowed. “I don’t think I know him.”
Lilah gave a kind of helpless shrug, “I was told he does specialty projects.”
Her mother moved into Lilah’s peripheral. “A break in is a specialty project?”
Lilah’s response was a breathy laugh and to offer to show them the kitchen. She led them to it, stalling near the island. “I hope you don’t mind that we had to update the fridge. There was no fixing it. And, the floors were completely water damaged, so they had to pull everything up and replace it, too.”
Her father nodded along, opening a cabinet and running his hand along the counter. “What happened to the ceiling?”
“What?”
He pointed up. “The ceiling. That’s fresh mud. What’d they do to it?”
Lilah gave that same helpless shrug. “I don’t know. There was, a hole or two in it.”
“They put a hole in the ceiling?”
“Yeah.”
“Huh.”
She was grateful that he seemed to take that answer without question. Lilah’s mother, however, wasn’t so easily satisfied.
“We’re going to have to update the other appliances.” Her mother said it on a sigh that was both disappointed and thoughtful. As if she were already fatigued by the project, and yet inspired by the prospect of starting over.
Lilah leaned a hip against the island. “You don’t have to do that.”
Her mother lifted a brow at her. “You don’t think that its a little mismatched? That oven is thirty years old, at least.”
“And they don’t make ovens like they used to,” her father chimed in. “That fridge will fall apart before the oven does, you just watch.”
Lilah jutted her chin at him. “He’s right.”
Her mother rolled her eyes. “The two of you are just alike. No sense of décor.”
From her right, a voice said, “I should introduce you to my friend, Javier. I think you would enjoy speaking with him.”
Brasa sidled up to Lilah and rested his hand on her hip. She offered him a small smile and said, “Everything okay?”
He’d been upstairs for a few hours, talking with Javier about what was going on down South. Lilah was too focused on cleaning to focus much on what they might be talking about, but she hadn’t heard any yelling or unnatural growling from the bedroom. She thought it might be safe to say that things were manageable.
“There hasn’t been any improvement in the contract,” Brasa answered. “I don’t think communication is going to solve this one.”
Lilah nodded. “We’ll figure it out.”
Her father interjected, “Got a bad actor?”
Brasa nodded with a bemused smile. “That’s one way of putting it.”
“You have any legal standing?”
A shrug. “I don’t think so. There’s nothing in writing. Verbal agreements don’t usually hold up in court.”
“Ah,” her father breathed, “I hope you get it worked out.”
“We will,” Brasa intoned with finality. “How do you like the new kitchen?”
Lilah’s mom lifted her chin. “We’ll have to replace the other appliances, but whoever you got to do the work was certainly efficient.”
Brasa’s bemused smile turned self-deprecating. “I can’t take credit for that. Javier made the arrangements.”
“A decorator with contractor contacts,” her mother replied with interest. “I imagine he stays very busy.”
Lilah chuckled wryly. “He’s a jack of all trades. The man can do anything.”
Beside her, Brasa pulled her closer and said, “I rely on him to help me take care of business so I can spend time with Lilah.”
Her mother’s mouth pulled up a bit into a smile that was almost knowing. “Is he an employee?”
Brasa made a kind of ambiguous sound. “I think of him as a partner. We’ve worked together a long time.”
“Well, then, I think I’d like to meet him.”
Lilah could only imagine her mother and Javier swapping stories over dinner. There was no telling how many embarrassing things they would reveal, especially if there was wine on the table.
Her father crossed his arms and regarded Lilah with a thoughtful gaze. “You know, we always expect you to come visit us. Maybe because you’re always moving around. Now that you’re going to be in one place for a bit, we should probably return the favor.”
Lilah felt her body freeze at the suggestion. Her knee jerk reaction was to say ‘absolutely not’ and dismiss the thought forever. Thankfully, her higher brain was still functioning and she was able mitigate her initial panic so that, instead of an outright denial, she laughed lightly and nodded.
“I think,” Lilah said carefully, “we can make that happen. It might be best to wait until Brasa is finished with this contract. Its kind of a pain in the ass and he really does need to focus on it for a bit.”
Thankfully, that response seemed to satisfy her parents. They glanced at one another in surprise, as if they expected her to say something different. Lilah didn’t blame them. She’d been dancing around answering their questions and letting them into her life for so long that it was more habit than necessity.
Her father shifted and laid a hand on her mother’s shoulder. “You just let us know and we’ll hop on a flight to Mexico.”
Brasa glanced at Lilah’s face, checking for any distress. When he found none, he said, “Would you like a drink? We didn’t think it was worth it to go grocery shopping, but we have a nice bottle of wine for the occasion.”
Her mother’s brows lifted. “The occasion?”
“The completion of the renovations.”
“Ah,” her mother breathed. “I agree. It is definitely something to celebrate.”
Lilah chuckled under her breath and angled around the island to grab a few glasses from the cupboard. She took the bottle from the counter and opened it, pouring each of them a serving. One by one, she handed the glasses around, until she reached Brasa. With a glass in each hand, she silently asked him if he wanted one. Brasa met her stare with one of his own and took the glass from her, brushing his fingers over her in the process.
“A toast,” Lilah’s father pronounced, “to fixing what went wrong.”
Lilah lifted her glass, thinking that he didn’t know how right he was. As she sipped at the wine, knowing that her tongue couldn’t hope to appreciate the vintage, she made herself recognize that she should have the upmost gratitude about how things worked out. At so many points over the last half a year, Lilah should have ended out dead. In the church when Raul pointed the shotgun at her, in the many instances where she deliberately pissed Amaru off, in the cabin when Mr. Pickerelle arrived. Lilah didn’t believe in God, but there was definitely someone looking out for her.
She turned her head and caught the tail end of a comment Brasa was making to her mother. Something about setting up a time for Javier to take her mother to some of his favorite furniture stores. He talked with her so easily, inviting Lilah’s father into the conversation with a question about the time he spent in Mexico. It left her completely without the need to participate.
Lilah stood just a short distance away, but the way she observed the back and forth between her parents and the most important person in her life felt far away. The distance helped her to see that it was him. It was always him. He was driver for all the things that were happening in her life. She remembered thinking that she hated him for dragging her into the caves, into Amaru’s vendetta. She remembered lashing out at him and lying to him. She remembered how annoyed she was when she had to rely on his assistance. Her actions back then felt so short-sighted.
“Let’s sit down,” Brasa suggested, gesturing towards the living room.
Lilah’s mother nodded in agreement. “Let me get a top up and we’ll be right there.”
Squeezing through the small gap between Brasa and the island, Lilah carried her glass through the living room. She stepped around the couch and padded to the hearth where she sat. The flames licked at her back, warming her through. She crossed her legs and followed Brasa’s path as he moved through the room and settled on the couch.
“I think they’re happy with it,” he said to her in a low voice.
Lilah agreed. “They’re not freaking out. That’s more than I could ask for.”
He regarded her seriously. “You need to learn to ask for more.”
Surprised by the assertion, Lilah struggled to find a reply. A moment later, it stopped mattering. Lilah’s parents walked around the couch and sat next to Brasa, all smiles and relaxation.
“We’ll need to see the receipts for all of this,” Lilah’s father said. “So we can work on paying you back.”
Lilah shook her head. “Its fine, really. I got a really good check from the last job.”
Brasa let out a soft breath that, to anyone else, might be nothing more than an exhalation. Lilah saw the humor in it, saw the story beneath the surface. It was the secret they would share for the rest of their lives.
Her parents wandered in a short time later. Lilah watched them take a seat on the couch and had the vague feeling that a conversation took place in the kitchen and a decision had been subsequently made. From the way her mother’s eyes danced, Lilah also got the feeling that they weren’t going to share this decision with her.
Fair enough, Lilah thought. Fair enough.
“So,” her father said, “you’re flying out tomorrow?”
“First flight out of the country. Brasa has meetings lined up.”
He looked at Brasa. “Back to work, then?” When Brasa hummed in the affirmative, Lilah’s father added, “I hope this has been a good vacation for the two of you.”
Brasa smiled, “It has been a wonderful break, even if I had to do some work while we were here.”
That was putting it mildly. Their trip was not like a vacation, in the least. It was a mission. An urgent mission. One that, in retrospect, seemed like a fever dream. Two weeks ago, Lilah was standing behind the bar with a phone to her ear. Now, she was sitting with her very much alive parents. There was a glass of wine in her hands and a fire at her back. Brasa was engaging in small talk and there were smiles all around. This was the result of ‘some work’. Despite the violence and the bloodshed, Lilah couldn’t bring herself to regret it.
When the bottle of wine was finished, Lilah said goodbye to her parents. She promised to call them when she landed. She promised to follow up about a visit. She also promised to be safe. Lilah could only guarantee two of the three promises. As with Amaru and Mr. Pickerelle, dealing with Benny carried with it a certain level of danger.
Thanks to Brasa’s blood, Lilah was stronger than she’d ever been. She had allies, too. Seth, Richie, Javier. All three of them were working together to keep Benny at bay until she and Brasa could get back.
At the door, Lilah hugged her father one more time. She inhaled the scent of burned vanilla that seemed to follow him everywhere he went. An artifact tied to the endless number of pages he turned from day to day.
“I’ll see you soon,” Lilah croaked around the effort it took to push down her emotions.
Her father laughed and pulled back to look her in the eye, “I will see you when I see you.”
Lilah walked with them to the porch stairs and watched until they drove off into the evening sun. She felt Brasa standing a little bit behind her, giving her the space she needed to switch gears. Lilah stood there until the car was out of sight and the sound of the engine faded away, until there was nothing but the woods and the sound of the critters inside it.
She turned and took a cleansing breath. “We should pack.”
Brasa moved to the side so that Lilah could step into the house. He closed the door, saying, “I’ve set an alarm for three.”
Lilah groaned, “Three?”
“We have the earliest flight, remember?”
“Its your plane. You can literally set the departure time.”
Brasa chuckled as he followed her up the stairs. “You wanted to be in Mexico as soon as possible. This was the earliest the pilot could sign off on.”
She groaned again. “Alright, alright. I did this to myself. I admit that.”
“Its not that late. You have plenty of time to sleep.”
They moved through the hall and into the bedroom. Lilah gathered up the clothes she’d purchased for trip and began to fold them into neat piles. She selected an outfit for the next day and set it aside. The rest, she pushed into a small drawstring bag she’d found in the closet. The tie die material was a little faded, but the vinyl lettering was still remarkably intact. While the D.A.R.E program did its best to keep Lilah and her peers from drugs and alcohol, it mostly didn’t take.
She straightened and caught Brasa sitting on the end of the bed, watching her with half a smile. “What?”
“You looked happy.”
“What?” she repeated.
“Down there, with your parents. You looked happy.”
“Of course I’m happy,” Lilah replied. “They’re alive and I’m pretty sure they bought the story about the break in. I gotta tell you, that is by far the biggest lie I’ve ever told them.”
Brasa scoffed. “I don’t believe that.”
Lilah dropped down onto the mattress next to him. “Its true. Its also the most money I’ve spent covering my ass.”
He nudged her. “What about all those parties I heard about while they were out of town.”
She smirked at him. “You think my parties resulted in twenty grand of property damage?”
“I don’t know. The way Hal talked about them, I thought it was likely.”
Lilah shook her head. “Nah. It was never that bad.”
He took her hand, thumb tracing a circle on her palm, “One day, I’m going to have you plan a party. I want to see your skills.”
She laughed. “My skills consist of plying people with alcohol so strong it’ll strip paint and providing a place for them to sleep when they can’t go anymore.”
Brasa breathed a soundless laugh. “I think you’re underestimating yourself.”
“Maybe,” Lilah admitted reluctantly. “Party’ll have to wait. We got serious business waiting for us tomorrow.”
“We do.” Brasa shook his head, “Fucking Benny.”
She nodded in sympathy. “Fucking. Benny.”
