Indian Blanket
Even though it’s not officially summer yet, summer has arrived in Florida. Temperatures are warm, we’re starting to get afternoon showers, and the Indian blanket flowers (Gaillardia pulchella) are starting to bloom. I discovered some of them in the median on one of our larger roads last week. They were growing among a bunch of tickseed flowers (Coreopsis leavenworthii) and it was…

Of All the Many Happenings, Only the Flower Can Bring Such a Simple Beauty by Mark Stevens
Via Flickr:
An image captured walking along a path in a grassy meadow with wildflowers like the firewheel in bloom. My thoughts on composing this image was to find an angle using the LCD LiveView screen on my Nikon SLR camera with the flowers and have a balance across the image.

DAY 31: FIRE - well, this is it. We’ve done it, our last Inktober image. I’m kind of sad, actually. It’s been a ride. So… this is Gaillardia pulchella, otherwise known as the Indian Blanketflower or Firewheel. It’s native to Northern Mexico and the Southern USA, and is a desert plant. Its name comes from a Native American legend, about a blanket woven of red and orange threads as a symbol of the maker’s prayers to the Great Spirit. One night her daughter went out and got lost in the woods, and the girl asked the Great Spirit to send her a blanket to keep her warm. When she woke up the next morning, the daughter found herself covered in flowers, in the same shades as her mother’s blanket.
It’s been wonderful sharing all this with all of you. I honestly have no idea what I’m going to do next! Thank you for taking this wee journey with me ❤️
