The Greenest Angler

I stopped dead in my tracks. I could see the shimmer of the silk thread across the park and something flying, trailing the thread. I was paralyzed at the thought that spiders could fly.

No, no, I told myself, don’t be silly, there’ll be a logical explanation, like a small insect has caught a spider and the web is trailing.  But it’s so deliberate, like a fly circling something, not like a mid-air struggle for survival.

I crossed the street to the park and peeked in along the diagonal path. There was a man in the midst of this. I’m embarrassed to say it took me a moment too long to realize that he was holding the stick, sorry rod, the silk was attached to. In my defense, there was no water in sight.

I started, and he must have felt it because his concentration broke and the rhythmic swirling of the man-made fly faltered and then fell to the grass. He looked at me, and I looked back, self-conscious of interrupting his practice. He held my gaze, so I walked towards him.

“Hi, do you fish?” he asked, catching me off guard.

“I used to; I don’t so much now that I live and work in the city.” I replied.

“I’ve never been fly fishing on the water, I’ve haven’t even been the usual sort of fishing, the sitting in a boat with rod and reel kind, but I want to be ready when I get my chance! I’ve even started sneaking into the back nine of the golf course to practice in their water trap.” He said proudly.

“Catch anything yet?” what else was I to say?

“Nah, the fish aren’t biting this time of year, or, really any time of year here. I guess that’s why they call it ‘fishing’, not ‘catching’.” He said with a grin, winked, and then went back to his practice.
