Realm of the Elderlings Ask Meme Thing

I was tagged by @tragediegh! Thanks so much! I haven't seen this one floating around in a long time!

Favorite Rote Book: It changes fairly often, but currently "Fool's Errand".

Why: It's the least harrowing Fitz book (yes I know he's pulled out of his quiet life and back into the fray of politics and intrigue and it comes at a great cost to one of his nearest and dearest). I just love how quiet it is, Fitz and the Fool's dynamic is top tier and Fitz is in an interesting place as a character and it has some of my favorite scenes and quotes in it. It reads like a romantic comedy in some ways. There's just so much to love about it.

Top Three Favorite Characters: This is a tough one! There are so many characters I love (it might be fun to do by Fitz books, LST and RWC honestly), but the ones who live in my brain rent free most days are always The Fool (all of their facets), Nighteyes and Fitz.

Top Three Least Favorite Characters: To say I agonized over this question for a long time would be an understatement. Hobb has such an incredible ability to write compelling dislikeable characters to the point where everyone adds something to the story even if you hate them. There are plenty of characters I find irritating though, but do I actually dislike them? No. There are only two characters I truly hate and the third I'm mentioning I just feel very apathetic about for the most part. I truly dislike/hate Kyle and Hest, and the third is Bee. I don't hate her, but I don't love her.

Favorite Ship (of the floating kind): Paragon, but I also love Ophelia.

Top Three Favorite Ships (of the people kind): I love so many ships both canon and non-canon and it also changes (except for Fitz x Fool, they're always a constant). Fitz x Fool are my everything always, Alise x Leftrin and Malta x Reyn (but shout-outs to Patience x Lacey, Burrich x Chivalry, Brashen x Althea, Malta x Nettle and Carson x Sedric too.). Truly I love how shippable RotE is across the board and the complexity of all of the relationships, issues and all.

Would you rather be Witted or Skilled? Honestly I see the benefits of both and if I could have both, I would pick that, but since I have to pick one, I'll pick Witted.

If you were Witted, what animal would you bond with? That depends on where I was living. If I was by the sea, dolphin, if I was on land a dog of some kind or a wolf possibly or a red-tailed hawk or possibly a horse and most likely a Friesan. But being realistic, some kind of canine.

Would you rather live in the Outislands, the Mountain Kingdom, the Six Duchies, Bingtown, The Rain Wilds, Kelsingra, Jamaillia, The Pirate Isles, or the Fool's Homeland? Another tough one! Probably either Bingtown or the Fool's Homeland (Mercenia I believe?). Realistically, I'd be a nomad and hop from place to place because they all interest me.

How were you introduced to the books? A close friend of mine from college read them and I was in one of those places where I looked at my shelves and nothing looked appealing, asked her for some recommendations and RotE was one of the series on the list (she didn't tell me it was 16 books at first) and I started it and the rest is more or less history.

Share a quote you love: Should I show you the tabs on my books? There are so many quotes I love, but I'll pick one or two.

To say that Fitz had lost track of TIME would be an understatement. Did time even exist anymore? Without the sun rising and falling, it was hard to tell. All he really knew anymore was dust and blue. Dust and blue and IT. It that lived in the shadows and the sandstorms and the dark moments.

It that whispered and tried its absolute damndest to lure him out and kill him, drive him insane just like it did to the others. 

There was nothing on this hellscape of a planet left. It was just Fitz. Just Fitz...

Until he heard her.

It wasn’t uncommon for It to use voices, to try and call for him and lure him out, but most of those voices had been men, but this... this voice was new. And it was close. Just above the trapdoor near the lake...

He watched her, sometimes, hidden in the reeds, but he couldn’t be sure. Maybe It had gotten smarter and was trying something new... Either way, he had to catch It, to find out what It wanted.

So, he lured her over, tossing rocks at the reeds, the noise of it attracting her until she was standing right on top of the trapdoor. The moment she fell through, he ran, covering up the hole in trap again.

He’d made the cage ahead of time, all he had to do was tie the walls together. And judging by how heavily she -- It? -- was breathing, he had plenty of time to do that before she woke up again.

Fitz had seen her come in before. The first time, she had been with another woman, the pair of them laughing and smiling, sipping wine at their table. She looked over in his direction from time to time, but it was only ever a passing glance, just looking at the art on the walls or the chandelier above his head. Maybe once she looked at him, just to see who was playing the piano, but he wasn’t sure. Regardless, he kept his head down and focused on the keys under his fingers.

She was back again about two weeks later. Her hair had been cut shorter, and her dress was the same as the one her friend had been wearing last time. Maybe they shared wardrobes, or something. Was that weird of him to notice?

It seemed like she was there for some sort of meeting, if the other fancily dressed people were anything to judge by, and the short conversations about what... seemed like business, maybe? Still, he focused on the keys, focused on the sheet music and the tablet in front of him.

The third time he saw her, it was in the corner of his right eye. She was talking to Hunter at the bar, and the pair of them kept nodding towards him. He tried to keep his focus on the composition he was playing, but a pop-up on his tablet alerted him that Hunter and this mystery woman were indeed talking about him, as Hunter had slyly texted him under the bar without ever breaking eye contact or conversation with the woman.

HUNTER: Incoming - lady wants to talk to you

Fitz blinked at his tablet and his mouth moved a little, no words or distinguishable sounds passing his lips. And, sure enough, the woman was walking towards his piano now, lingering near the rear leg as he played. She was still far enough away from him that she wouldn’t see his wheelchair, wouldn’t really notice the way he was sitting or that his head tilt wasn’t just a matter of him focusing.

He let his eyes flicker towards her, then back to his keyboard, and he nodded his head towards the sign propped up on the lid of the piano. PLEASE WAIT UNTIL I FINISH PLAYING THIS SONG TO MAKE A REQUEST.

Fitz had been working for the SHIELD 616 for just about two years. Becoming a firefighter hadn’t been his original plan for his life, but something about the team had just felt right, so he’d made the change from volunteer to full-time, and never looked back. Sure, it was dangerous, and he’d be lying if he said he didn’t sometimes consider the what-ifs, but he liked his work, liked his team.

When one of the EMTs had left, having finished medical school and moved on to become a trauma doctor, there had been an open position. The fire captain, Coulson, and the paramedic captain, had interviewed people to fill Lincoln’s spot, though Fitz hadn’t had a chance to meet them until today.

It had been a relatively easy day, with the crew taking advantage of the gap between calls. Fitz was flat on his back on the creeper seat, only his feet sticking out from under the rig, when he heard a new voice call out a hesitant hello.

“Jus’ a second!” he called back, shifting his feet so he could push himself out from under the firetruck. He was sure that he looked a right mess, his hands greasy, his face, too. He was also sure that he’d have to change, his shirt dirty from being on the floor.

When he finally resurfaced from under the truck, he was immediately looking up at the most beautiful woman he’d ever seen. Her hair was pulled back into a tight ponytail, and she was wearing the EMT uniform. ( So she was Lincoln’s replacement, then. ) For a moment, Fitz couldn’t remember how to breathe, his mouth open slightly as he stared up at her, still flat on his back, covered in engine grease.

“... Hi.”

Fitz trails after Ophelia to the cargo hold of the Zephyr where she’s piling suitcases into the trunk of her car.

He knows his presence is more than likely unwelcome after what he’d said, but he feels compelled to bid her a proper goodbye all the same. He owes her that much.

“Ophelia, wait—” His muscles ache like he’s run a marathon but he’s still trying to lift something heavier than himself.

She slams the trunk shut with more force than necessary, and he flinches infinitesimally, both at the harshness of the sound and the finality of it all.

It’s too late to take it back now anyway, and even if he tried to, what good would it do? He’d meant what he said—sure, in hindsight he could’ve been a bit more subtle, but the message would’ve remained more or less the same.

She’s still so maddeningly beautiful, even when she’s scowling at him with her arms crossed over her chest, like she’s bracing herself for another blow.

“What for, Fitz? I think you’ve already said everything you needed to say.”

She doesn’t even sound angry anymore, just… resigned and somehow that’s so much worse. 

Her expression hardens, the way it always does when she’s trying to hold back tears. Her eyes are glassy but her jaw is clenched as she stares him down and he knows she’s not about to crack, not in front of him.

Stubborn thing, even now. He’s always adored it about her.

He opens his mouth, as if to tell her that he still cares, or maybe that she means a lot to him, even though it feels futile. She beats him to it, in the end.

“Look, I get it.” She says. “What we had was an—” She makes a face, searching for the right word, “—interlude, and it was nice but it’s never going to be enough now that she’s back because you only have room in your heart for her.”

Fitz bristles at that, feeling guilty and wounded all at once. Had he really been that blunt?

It’s very hard to look at her right now, and her plaintive, pretty face, so he just doesn’t.

“You know that’s not what I was going to say.” He protests weakly, sounding the slightest bit defensive.

“Maybe,” she shrugs, “but that’s the gist of it, right?”

He supposes it is.

“You don’t have to leave.” He says instead, the words coming out of him in a jumbled rush, like it’s a last-ditch effort. “You could stay.”

She shakes her head, half-heartedly scoffing through the hurt she can’t quite chase away.

“No,” she disagrees, “I really don’t think I can.”

They’re standing close enough that he can smell the coconut soap she uses sometimes. He leans in, and she draws in a sharp breath, turning her face away.

“Don’t.” She warns, because he might be over it but that doesn’t mean she is. “Don’t make this any harder than it needs to be.”

She steps away and there’s this odd moment where his stomach plummets because this is it, surely. But no. She hesitates, then slowly turns back towards him. He feels more relieved than he has any right to.

She looks at him for a long moment with those muddy green eyes of hers, searching his face for something, and then says, “Just tell me one thing.”

Anything, he wants to say, but doesn’t. He just stands there with an ache blossoming in his chest, waiting for the other shoe to drop.

“Do you regret it?” She asks, uncharacteristically quiet as she plays with the top button on his collared shirt with an intimacy reserved for lovers. She figures it’s going to take some time to unlearn it. “What we had. Do you think it was a mistake?”

He fixes his gaze on her with just as much intensity. They’d promised they wouldn’t lie to each other, a long time ago.

“No,” he concedes, dry-mouthed, when it becomes apparent that a sufficient word isn’t going to come to him. “I don’t. I couldn’t.”

She nods slowly, processing. It would’ve been so much easier if he’d been dismissive, if he’d said she never meant anything to him anyway and it was just something to pass the time. But instead there’s this sincerity bleeding out of him, and knowing that in spite of everything it still isn’t enough makes it that much harder to swallow. There’s no comfort in being second best.

Her hand slips from his shirt and he raises his, fingers curled like he’s about to tuck a loose strand of hair behind her ear or maybe sweep his thumb across the apple of her cheek. Then he seemingly thinks better of it and lets it awkwardly fall back down to his side, stilted in a way she’s never seen him before. There’s no touch, just the purposeful, torturous wave of separation between them.

“I guess this is goodbye, then.” She concludes, fiddling with her keys.

There’s a bit of a jump in his jaw, all of a sudden.

It hurts, to hear that. There was a time when he couldn’t watch her leave without wanting to pull her right back, a time when a minute without her felt like far too long.

He’s never been fully able to quash that feeling. Even now, when it’s so wildly inappropriate, he briefly flirts with the (admittedly desperate) idea of surging forward to kiss her, or at least hold her again. But it’s not his place to do that, not anymore.

“I guess it is.” He agrees mirthlessly, watching as she climbs into the car.

The engine starts with a satisfying purr, and he reflexively squints as the headlights bathe him in their beam. Still, he keeps his eyes locked on her face as the sleek black Audi glides down the lowered ramp and disappears into the night.
