Hell yeah two stars thank you calm!!

Predictable as I am, both scenes are from Knight of Pentacles, King of Spades. This ended up a little too big so I'm putting it under the cut.

⭐️ - Chapter 9

I have three favorite scenes, and this is one of them. Perhaps it's the favorite. I don't know. What matters is how I am really proud of how it came out, of Shido's mannerisms, Akira's defiance and, of course, Goro's horror—and, at a later date, him confessing he feels jealous of how it's Shido's brand on Akira's back. It's the equivalent of Knight's interrogation room. Anyway, what I want to talk about is how this entire scene was supposed to be wildly different. At first, the idea was for Goro to be more than happy to bear the shit out of Akira and break a few of his ribs. The moment the entire thing ended and Goro dragged Akira to his room they were going to have a really wild night of hate sex and more or less make up. Then I watched Hannibal. This scene awakened something and I just. Had to do something of my own like this. It was a need. Therefore, I wrote this scene. A fun fact: I'm not sure if this changed or not, as it has been a few years since I was last involved with farming work but Brazilian laws dictated you need to brand your cattle. The placement options are: shoulder, hind legs, or face. Branding Akira's face felt too much, his ass a little tasteless so between his shoulder blades sounded perfect. Marie's castle in Tactica gave me SO much validation btw. I also really like Goro's progression here, and how this is his turning point. It's a very, very rude awakening. He goes from his father's ruthless living weapon, reveling in battle and bloodshed (mostly because he isn't entirely sure of how to separate feels good from this hurts and I like to fight, I don't like to kill.) I just think character progress and development are very neat! In case you don't know what scene I'm talking about, here you go:

I think I already said this a million times but I think this particular post by Maggie Stiefvater pretty much defines my creation process. It's stealing the energy of things I like, scenes that left big impressions on me, or even events other creators constructed that I want to make my own version of. I really like the idea of Goro not coming out of the engine room unscathed so it seemed like a great opportunity to put it in practice. I took inspiration from many, many places for this scene so here are some of them:

Dimitri Alexandre Blayddid

I lost count of how many times I mixed Goro fanart with Dimitri fanart (and vice-versa) This fanart made my brain go BRRRRRR at such high frequency I immediately knew how I wanted to write Knight's climax.

The Chronicles of Narnia: Prince Caspian (2008)

As you might have guessed, I'm a bookworm. For you to understand how much, I first read the Narnia Chronicles I was around...9? 10? I read them before the movies came out. Goro and Shido's duel was inspired by two things: Goro's canonical need to prove himself and humiliate Shido publicly and Peter vs Miraz. Now, in the books their duel isn't nearly as well written nor as well choreographed as the movie one is so it was kinda whatever but the movie. Oooh the movie. At the tender age of 12 it was simply wild to me that a defeated enemy who already yielded could commit treachery. I mean, it wasn't Miraz himself who did but still. Wild. Wild, I'm telling you.

This is the scene I am talking about. I couldn't find it in English tho. Sorry about that.

Dragons of Autumn Twilight: The Dragonlance Chronicles by Margaret Weis and Tracy Hickman

"What remained of Riverwind no longer resembled anything human. The man's flesh had been seared from his body. The white of bone was clearly visible where skin and muscle had melted from his arms. His eyes ran like jelly down the fleshless, cadaverous cheeks. His mouth gaped open in a silent scream. His ribcage lay exposed, hunks of flesh and charred cloth clinging to the bones. But-most horrible-

the flesh on his torso had been burned away, leaving the organs exposed, pulsing red in the garish red moonlight."

I first read this collection when I was around...12? 13? Maybe 14? and this scene left SUCH a big impression on me I still think about it years later. The description is so wildly visceral that it still inspires how I write violence to this day (and probably will continue to do so many years after. I really wanted to write something that not only evoked the same sensations but also remained faithful to the imagery it created in my mind. I hope I succeeded. (I also did a lot of research on what it happens when you puncture an eye, by the way!)

Chronicles of the Emerged World trilogy by Licia Troisi

Now, this one is a little more broad than the others. I really like Licia Troisi's books. Her worldbuilding is impeccable, her characters are amazing and her plots are always very solid. Peak, honestly. Anyway, there's a character named Ido who loses his eye in a horrific battle and he simply does not recover. I mean, he does but it isn't like...boom, eyepatch be upon thee and you have a badass scar and some sexy eyepatch now. He goes through a long, long, long recovery period and it's amazing to read. I enjoyed his journey and character arc a lot. I wrote Goro losing his eye also thinking about how I wanted Vexed to go: Goro needs a long way to recover and I wanted to challenge myself to write something out of my comfort zone. A disabled character sounded like a great way to do it. I spent much more time pouring over hospital websites, medicine books that might or might not have been pirated, blogs and reddit posts to have not only the (superficial, admittedly, but better than nothing) knowledge of how to write and how people truly feel and live recovering from losing an eye.

And I think that's it!!! Once again thank you very much for the two stars!!

Freelancers Concept

Back in the day, they called people like us adventurers. We worked in guilds, providing our services to those who requested it. From slaying magnificent beasts to painting a picture of a horizon our patrons may never see - we did it all.

Nowadays they have a different name for us. Freelancers. Though the dragoons have argued the name confuses potential clients.

With stable jobs popping up left and right, people don’t want adventurers in their life. They want moving companies and professional photographers. Or, you know, actual law enforcement to take care of threats.

That’s why there’s so few of us. We’re the former convicts, the ones who didn’t make it through school, the ones whose disabilities keep us from working the typical nine to five job. We take whatever we can get and go from there.

Truthfully, though, it’s the only place that feels like home. I could never bear to leave it.

Completely genuine question: are there any love interests for Barnes's characters that you actually like? I have yet to find anyone who I enjoy seeing him with, although Caspian/Susan were kind of sweet. But that could just be me. 😆

This is a good question! Let’s play.

Dunstan: I honestly can’t blame the woman... instead of trying to actually get help, she drags him into her tent? Cart? whatever? and has her way with him. You gotta get it where you can, and as far as one night stands go, this worked for me. (But having a kid... yikes)

Caspian: I think that all of the Pevensie children are terrible (with the exception of Edmund) ... and I think Susan is INSUFFERABLE. I don’t mind Anna Popplewell, but I don’t think that Susan was a good fit for him, and I think the kiss was unnecessary. Liliandil makes more sense; she’s “Narnian” in the sense that she’s not from another realm/world/reality.

Dorian: Sibyl... meh. They were never on the same page. Emily ... I think he actually cared for her (as much as he could) but I don’t like Rebecca Hall as an actress much.

Young Man: I think that with Celia, Ben was really, really good. I felt the pain that both of them felt, and this was really hard to watch because it felt real. I liked this relationship a lot, even though there wasn’t a ton to it in the way there would have/could have been if this timeline was the main focus of the movie.

Ryan Brenner: Jackie Laurel could have gotten fully run over and flattened by that truck and then replaced in rest of the movie with a sock on a stick and it would have made more sense to me than Ryan with her. I HATE Katherine Heigl, but I honestly think that with the way that role was written, I would have hated Jackie no matter who played her... but KH just made it so much worse.

Tom Ward: Alright, so Alicia Vikander rubs me the wrong way. She was a NIGHTMARE on the set of Tomb Raider, and she just seems very young and very immature to me. I liked the idea of Tom and a witch together, because they were so different and wanted very different things... but Alice was never really defined enough as a character for me to give her a chance past that.

John Whittaker: Alright, so this may surprise you... but I actually liked him with Jessica Biel. They seemed to play very well off of each other, and their relationship was genuine. I think a lot of it comes with watching this movie so many times and knowing that JB played it exactly as she needed to - he was never going to be IT for her, but she thought he could be enough. John/Sarah I was not a fan of, because the way she looked at him was just a mix of disappointment and envy all at the same time, and I didn’t appreciate that at all, even though Charlotte Riley was a very pretty woman.

Josh: This movie was a fucking disaster, first of all. While I didn’t like him with either woman much in terms of characters, I think the edge has to go to Eliza Dusku. Sarah Roemer couldn’t act her way out of a wet paper bag, and even though the dialogue is super cringey between Josh and Renee and the sex scenes are worse... they physically LOOK nice together.

Neil: The most lovable walking disaster EVER, I actually really liked him with Krysten Ritter. I think they complimented each other, and it was a fun story to tell. It’s hard to step away from him as this character, I think, but Gloria tried her damndest.

Alejandro: I.... don’t like Amanda Seyfried much, because I feel like she plays the same character in every single thing she’s in... and TBW is no different. This movie was a mess, too, and I realize that everyone was just working with what they had, but there was no chemistry there.

Nick Tortano: Alright, so the “quiet game” scene is one of my ALL TIME FAVORITE BEN BARNES SCENES in any movie or show he’s ever been in. I think Allie was a good match for him, because she made him realize in a very short amount of time that there could be more to life than The Family. I liked their interactions, and the way that they could play off of each other and make it believable.

Stoya: .... Ben Barnes and Mary Elizabeth Winstead were SO GOOD together. It was barely 10 minutes of screen time, and... it was GREAT. I really like her (what up Jessica Bennett from Harmony) and I really like him, and I think that they have just the right type of connection and I would have loved to see more of the two of them because I need to know WHERE IS STOYA!?!!?

Logan: .... Ben Barnes standing next to Talulah Riley was SOMETHING ELSE. They’re both gorgeous, and while she wasn’t an actual LOVE interest... they made a good pair. I’d also cut off my left arm (I’m left handed) to see him kiss Clementine, because Angela Sarafyan is a GODDESS.

Billy: Out of Dinah and Krusty, obviously I think he had more chemistry with Dinah, but I still didn’t like it because of what they tried to make it be. If it’s just two consenting adults using each other for sex and information, it’s one thing, but they tried to make it seem as if Billy was the only deceptive one. Based on LOOKS, I think ARR is pretty, but I don’t think she looks good WITH BB. Dumont... I don’t like FL at all, so I wasn’t even a fan of the CASTING, let alone what they did with her and Ben’s characters.

Benjamin: If you were in the room with me just now as I typed that, you would have heard and seen me let out the biggest sigh in the entire world. Ben Barnes and a geriatric psychopath (I don’t mind Julia Ormond, but they had her looking ROUGH in Gold Digger) is not appealing in the slightest to me. I get that they were trying to make it seem ***real*** like love could conquer all and that it would be realistic that someone that looked like HIM would settle for someone that looked like HER ... but I never felt it. She was not a likable character, and there were a lot of times he wasn’t, either... but I felt ZERO sympathy for Julia Day in ANY episode of that show, while Benjamin’s story (and the way Ben played it) was the one where all of the feeling was kept. Benjamin had more chemistry with Julia’s friend Marsha in five minutes... and that’s sad.

This was the second show of the Big Cypress festival. Fish was introduced as 'Soda Jerk' during I Didn’t Know. SOAM and Disease were unfinished. After the ensuing Catapult, Trey remarked: “Only at the largest concert in the world could we get away with playing a song like that.” After Midnight made its Phish debut. The late set, also known as “The Show,” began at around 11:35. “Father Time” was on stage, pedaling on an exercise bike that powered a large clock. The sounds of the clock’s gears could be heard through the sound system. About ten minutes before midnight, “Father Time” collapsed from exhaustion and the clock stopped. Then, a large fan boat entered the concert field and approached the stage. Early in its journey, the fan boat exploded away and revealed the hot dog used in the 1994 New Year’s stunt. While the band rode the hot dog to the stage, an instrumental version of Meatstick began to play over the P.A.. The band reached the stage and fed several meatsticks to Father Time, reviving him so that the clock could continue moving toward midnight. The band then took the stage and played Meatstick to begin The Show. Dancers were on stage prior to Phish reaching it. Auld Lang Syne and Disease were accompanied by fireworks. Heavy Things was recorded live and rebroadcast as part of ABC television’s New Year’s Eve coverage. In a humorous effort to confuse the home audience, Trey instructed the crowd to yell the word “cheesecake” in lieu of cheering at the end of the song. After twice giving the example of yelling the word once, Trey changed his mind and instructed the crowd to chant it, adding for them to say it like they were pissed. Trey then introduced the band for the rebroadcast and offered a message of peace and harmony for the world where he reminded people to drive in the right lane unless passing another vehicle. Meatstick was subsequently teased as the New Year approached in the central time zone. Sand included a My Soul tease from Mike and Crosseyed included a DEG tease. YEM included a vocal jam based around the word “cheesecake” and Trey altered the lyrics to Axilla and Albuquerque to reference the word. Inlaw Josie Wales featured Trey on acoustic guitar. Quadrophonic Toppling debuted, albeit with different music than on The Siket Disc. Rock and Roll included an After Midnight tease. Love You included band introductions; Fish introduced Page before the song and Mike and Trey afterwards, and the band as “Phish 2000” (see November 2, 1990). Piper contained Bug teases from Page. 2001 began with the signature Hood drum roll. After the show closed with yet another version of Meatstick, the Beatles song Here Comes the Sun was piped through the crowd at sunrise. Two breakouts were played: Crosseyed and Painless (first since August 13, 1997, or 159 shows), and Love You (first since July 5, 1997, or 179 shows).

Notes: Some comments on this bird, with many thanks to Jörgen and Hans: “On the 2nd of July, while searching for the Steller’s, I came across this adult large gull with dull yellow legs. I was looking for the eider, so I just took a few pictures and moved along. After seeing and photographing the Steller’s at close range, I went back for the gull to try to see the open wings but it was no longer there… As you can see in the pictures, it had a very pale iris and a very brightly coloured bill (colours +/-realistic in the photos) that I think are wrong for Caspian. Also, the structure doesn’t seem quite right for Caspian to me. It does have a small head but maybe within the range of female argentatus or even michahellis. In some of the pictures there seems to be extensive white proximally on the underside of P10 (which would be good for Caspian or Caspian x ?) but the white can actually be on the basis of another more inner feather… (don’t you think?) Bill looks wrong for michahellis (subtle gonys, red restricted to lower mandible) and leg colour too (very dull yellow). Also, it probably would have to be a small female lusitanius to have such a small head and slender bill. The orbital ring was very bright though (more reddish than orange I think)… Do you agree it is one of those yellow legged argentatus, or do you think it may be something else? Rafael Matias: E a "ssp" omissus? Eu: Sim, é a essa "variedade" que nos estamos a referir. Como sabes (o teu ssp entre aspas assim sugere), vários autores não consideram "omissus" uma subespécie válida mas antes uma variedade de argentatus. Foi essa a opção seguida na 2ª edição do Collins e mesmo a lista da Dutch Birding de 2013 p/o WP não inclui essa "subespécie". A variedade "omissus" supostamente nidifica no Leste do Báltico e no norte da Fino-Escandinávia. De qualquer modo acho que tens razão, o título das fotos não era explícito, por isso alterei-o. Obrigado pela achega.

Siberian crane: The species may vanish & why

Scientific classification: Leucogeranus leucogeranus

Among cranes, its serrated bill makes it unique, and enables it to easily feed on underground roots and slippery prey items. Easily recognisable, it has red skin on the forehead, face and sides of the head, and white plumage with black wingtips, reddish pink legs.

This critically endangered species is now only found in one main population in East Asia, with a few birds remaining in the historic Western/Central population. The Eastern population breeds in northeastern Siberia and winters at Poyang Lake in the Lower Yangtze River Basin in China.

In the Western/Central population, a single crane named Omid (Hope) continues to winter along the south coast of the Caspian Sea in Iran. Since its fi rst journey to Fereydunkenar in 2007, Omid has been fl ying to Fereydunkenar in October. ‘Omid’ is the last remaining bird from the western population which prefers to spend winter in Iran and, previously, Rajasthan. These birds have not been sighted in Bharatpur National Park of Rajasthan since 2001.

There are only 3,200 Siberian cranes left in the world. These cranes feed and nest primarily in marshes, bogs and other wetlands where there are wide reaches of shallow fresh water with good visibility. Siberian cranes are not very social. During breeding and winter seasons individuals are territorial.

Family fl ocks number about 12 to 15 cranes. They are aquatic birds, and use the wetlands for feeding, roosting, nesting and other behavioral displays.

“So this… is Ystoria?”

Ellis looked around, eye wide. She thought [insert name] was big, but it was nothing compared to this. Tall, grey buildings overlooked the sidewalks with busy people rushing by on either side. Cars patiently waited in the dark streets to continue moving to whatever destination lay in store for them.

She glanced around at the world outside from the back of Caspian’s rusted car. It was an old model, not fancy enough to be called an antique but not useless enough to be a called a clunker. Benny fidgeted with the radio dial in the front seat, and Caspian kept his eyes on the road.

“First time here, huh?” Nine asked.

“First time I remember,” she replied.

In the distance, she could see a large building with massive windows overlooking the streets. A plaza sat in front of the building, complete with benches, trees, and a fancy-looking statue with an image of the goddess.

“What is that?” she asked. “Some kind of church?”

Caspian shook his head. “Not quite. More like the… well, the castle of sorts.”

“Not real pretty for a castle,” Benny mumbled as he readied his camera to take a few shots. “Seems like it’d be a church.”

Nine rolled his eyes. “Well, considering the Kendricks think they’re the goddess’s blessing to the world, you’re not too far from the truth.” He spat the words, looking annoyed as he reclined in his seat.

Ellis wasn’t sure what had Nine so frustrated. Perhaps the threat that the kingdom would close down their adventurer’s guild for harboring the princess without telling them. But it seemed like more than that, like he was angry at the kingdom itself, and the royal family even more so.

“You okay?” she asked.

“I’m… I’m fine. Just bad memories.”

It probably had something to do with why Nine had gone to jail in the first place. She wanted to ask, wanted to say something, but nothing came to mind. The words died at the back of her throat or on her tongue.

“Mm,” was all she settled with.

They turned right at the three-way light and soon pulled into a parking lot. Caspian nestled the keys into the pocket of his slacks after locking the doors. Benny was the first out, stretching and jogging in place. He never was good at staying in one place for too long. Ellis didn’t blame him this time. She was antsy too. Though maybe not as antsy as Nine seemed to be, clenched fists shoved in the pockets of his ripped jeans.

“So, any idea what we say to the king?” Benny asked.

Caspian shook his head. “I was actually going to let Ellis take the lead.”

“Me?” she asked. “Seriously?”

“You are his daughter after all.”

Logically, it made sense. It all checked out. The royal heir to the throne should be the one to speak to her father in defense of her guild. But what if he still got upset? What if he demanded she stay here? Seemed like the only logical thing to expect when a princess returns to her kingdom.

They crossed the parking lot.

Ellis felt like everyone’s eyes were on her. She glanced around. As far as she could tell, no one was watching her. She should have been fine. But she still felt anxious. She pulled her hood over her head and shoved her hands in the pockets of her jacket.

It was a chilly day. The skies were as dark as the buildings. She had a feeling it was going to rain later. Seemed fitting somehow.

Ellis’s legs began to shake as she approached the castle. Her breath caught in her throat, choking her. She stopped, trying to get her nerves to calm down. They wouldn’t. She felt like she was suffocating.

“I don’t want to do this,” she said, then repeated it again and again. “I don’t want to do this. I don’t want to do this.”

Caspian breathed out a small sigh. He wasn’t angry with her, at least not as far as she could tell. He seemed more like he was worried about her. He was always worried about her.

Nine placed his hand on Ellis’s hood, a small sign of faith to show that he was there, on her side, and would protect her if it came down to it.

Benny linked arms with her and, when she dared look up, they all had small, anxious smiles on their faces. They were trying to be brave for her sake, even if they were scared. She ought to show them the same courtesy.

“You ready?” Benny asked, grinning as wide as he could muster. She could feel his body tremble. None of them were ready. But they had to go in anyways.

Ellis sucked in a shaking breath and nodded. “Ready as I’ll ever be.”

They headed inside to a reception area. A bored looking woman sat behind the desk in a black suit top and skirt. She inspected papers, signed them, and put them to the side to work on the next one. When the bell above the door chimed to show she had visitors, she glanced up. At first, she looked annoyed. Then she saw Ellis, and her features softened.

“Princess,” she said. She stood and bowed to the returning royal. Ellis didn’t like it.

“Hey,” was all she could muster. “I, uh… guess we’re here to see my father?” She wasn’t sure how else to phrase it.

The woman cast a dark look towards the princess’s three companions. “Them as well?” she asked.

“Yes, them as well.” She wouldn’t do this without them.

She watched the woman roll her eyes - the nerve! - before motioning over a guard. The man raised his visor to reveal a look of shock as he admired the princess, but he said nothing.

The woman motioned towards the back of the building with a nod of her head. “To his majesty’s throne room,” she said.

The guard nodded. “This way, folks.”

He led them deep into the castle, though Ellis still couldn’t help but feel this place felt more like a cathedral or office building. Or maybe a bank; she realized that comparison might be more fitting than the other two.

Finally, the guard stopped before a large door with some ornate images of the goddess herself carved into wood. They really seemed to like showing off the goddess and, honestly, it made Ellis kind of uncomfortable. It was like they had a giant billboard that read “chosen by the goddess, all others serve us”. She didn’t like it.

She gave a nervous glance to her companions. “Here we go.” She wasn’t the least bit enthused. Caspian held one door open. Nine held the other. Benny and Ellis walked in, and the other two quickly followed. The doors clicked into place behind them.

They found themselves in a very long room, with a fancy dark blue rug leading up to an onyx throne. A tired-looking man sat there, looking ahead with little interest. This interest was quick to come when he realized his guests weren’t more subjects with requests for him to fulfill. No, it was his daughter, long though lost, and the men he deemed to have a part in taking her away from her home.

Ellis kept her head bowed, not daring more than a glance or two up at the man who supposedly was her father. She felt no connection to him, or this castle, or this country. She felt out of place, and it was making her kind of crabby.

She stopped before the throne. How does one react when meeting a king and father? Unsure of what else to do, Ellis knelt down before the man. The others followed suit.

“It’s an honor to meet you, sir,” Ellis said. Her tone lacked any enthusiasm to prove her words true.

“This isn’t the first time we’ve meet, Ellysia,” the king replied with a small smile.

That name didn’t feel like hers, but she couldn’t just not answer to it. Any potential further disrespect would just set the king’s anger deeper. That threatened the adventurer’s guild. She couldn’t have that.

“And these are?” he asked, turning his attention to her companions.

“Caspian Evergrand.”

“Benoit Lavigne. But, uh, she just calls me Benny.”

“Nine.”

The king raised a brow. “Nine?”

“Your kingdom stripped me of my name and used me as an experiment. Hence, Nine.”

The king just made a small noise of recognition at Nine’s hate-filled words. “I see. You three may leave now. Go return to your little guild. You may leave my daughter here.”

“Like Hell we will!” Nine snapped, fists clenching. He’d been content to play along with niceties until now. But he’d had enough. He wouldn’t pretend anymore.

Caspian sighed. “Sir, with all due respect, I feel her majesty is much better suited to work with our guild.”

“Plus, she’d be hella bored here,” Benny added.

The king’s eyes narrowed. He stood and grabbed a blade resting near his throne. “I said, you may leave.” He spoke slowly, his words filled with anger.“This is my daughter, heir to my kingdom. She doesn’t belong with you lot.”

Ellis shook her head. “I disagree. You may be Ellysia’s father, but I don’t know you. I don’t know this kingdom, and I don’t want to know it. I’m happy. So you can back off.”

He looked at her with wide eyes. Her betrayal was a dangerous thing, and Sir Kendrick was about to prove it.

“Guards, arrest these men. They’ve poisoned the princess’s mind!”

Ellis wasn’t sure how so many guards heard the man, but they came rushing in like a flood.

“We got any weapons?” Ellis asked, revealing her daggers.

“Left my bow in the car. My bad.” Benny offered an apologetic smile.

“I don’t need a staff to heal, though I admit I left mine in the trunk as well.”

“You guys are useless,” Nine grumbled.

“Oh, and I assume you brought your sword?” Caspian retorted.

Nine just rolled his eyes. “Don’t need one for shadow magic and punching the hell out of these creeps.”

“So that leaves three of us who can fight… and Benny.”

“Sorry!”

Ellis chuckled. “No worries. We gotta get outta here. We’ll figure out the plan from there.”

Because there was no way in Hell Ellis would just give in so easily. Wasn’t her style.
