Angstpril 2024 - Day 23 - swept away
“Lemonade and Sunrays”
As she stares at the scene before her, Fleur’s heart swells with a bittersweet ache. She gazes upon her loved ones, and she feels an inexplicable need to hug them tight. Like they’re about to vanish.

Dragonic Kaiser Vermillion Set 12
Ride the Lightning!
Hello! Rounding out the Ezel post from last week, I figured we'd take a look at good ol DKV! Dragonic Kaiser Vermillion and his Standard incarnation!
Tumblr media
Vermillion is a solidly moderated powerhouse! Able to pump up 2 Narukami's alongside dealing a damage at the end of his attack, his Narukami can put you to 5 damage extremely quickly!
Tumblr media
Here's the list if you wanna try it yourself! Code GXTH on EN Decklog! Now onto the details!
If I had to pick out key cards for this deck, I'd have to give it to two on the list, Dragritter, Lateefa and Rising Phoenix!
Tumblr media
Given the decks' order-based playstyle with Eternal Thunderbolt, Lateefa helps a ton with both generating a board and also swinging big easy! She's better than Teithfalt is in ezel because you dont need to worry about calling her by an effect, and since 2 copies of thunderbolt in hand actually count as 4 (since you can bind them to play them from drop once per turn) her first skill is also almost always online! Overall an extremely good card and a definite solid piece of support!
The other card that really furthers this decks' aggressive nature is the old classic, Rising Phoenix!
Tumblr media
There are multiple ways to bind both during the main phase (like binding your own Eternal Thunderbolts) as well as the battle phase (Red River Boosting + DKV's attack if youve proced a Thunderbolt) meaning this lil chicken is your best shot at multi-attacking to try close out games!
A good approach could be to buff up a unit behind Deathscythe (or Lateefa if you really dont care about your next turn) with DKV and Rising's skills to then call a Phoenix in front of. DKV's new promo, Hammer Cull Dragon, is also great for this ocmbo since he clears himself off the board by binding himself, which also still activates Phoenix's 2nd skill to call itself. Calling him at this time compared to calling him after dkv's attack has bound units means you can also buff him up with triggers!
There isn't as much room for experimentation in DKV purely because the card pool is quite small, but I'll still talk about what I can!
For starters, I've chosen to avoid tensha stead as well as Bariodigneel because they both remove themselves from the board, and whilst they help in other aspects of the deck, DKV really needs its rearguards in order for its quick pushes of damage to matter.
Those are the main generics that are typically included in DKV decks at this stage, so that's all I can really say!
Though next week will mark the start of set 13's articles! Featuring Avantgarda: Richter, Lianorn, Marche-Fleur, Youthberk: RevolForm, Full-Blast, and Stra Vairina as the highlights! Other decks may show up as well!
As always if you have any suggestions or comments, feel free to reblog and reply! Until next time! Ciao!

A History of this AU: Well. Alright, so. Long ago, the Earth was ruled by four races. Humans, Monsters, Angels, and Demons are the four types of beings. The Four Races lived in harmony, working together to maintain order. Two Gods were worshiped by the Four Races.
A Goddess known as [redacted] and a God known as [redacted]. The Goddess would bless the good deeds of those who prayed to her. Her gift was a bountiful harvest and the blessing of the hunts. She was Life itself. She would bestow life on all living things. The God would protect the races from the wrath of other gods. His gifts included a plethora of wealth, with more readily available. He embodied Death. He guides the souls of the dead to a peaceful afterlife... If they deserved it, that is.
One day, a self-centered, greedy Human slaughtered the Goddess and stole her abilities... They were cruel and harsh instead of kind and benevolent. They would let families starve to death and watch as others suffered.
Enraged by this human's actions, the God declared war on them. In a war that lasted years, the Four Races sided with him. Unfortunately, the God had died, and no one could take his place. The world was in disarray.
The Four Races fought the remaining God until the Demons were sentenced away. The Angels were the only Celestial Beings left to guard the Humans and Monsters. Regrettably, the Angels began to dwindle and fade. The Monsters and the Humans cried for another God. Someone, anyone to SAVE them… Thus a miracle birth of twins had fallen onto them. It was as if the Goddess blessed them with a chance of Life. The Deity that had taken her place was enraged.
"It's impossible!" "I am Life!" they exclaimed. They were prepared to tear the world apart in order to murder these two young twins.
Vale, an Angel, had offered to protect the twins. The Humans and Monsters both agreed. The Monster Mother of the twins and their older siblings were hesitant... But they eventually gave the twins to Vale. The Angel had bestowed Angelic Powers on these half-monster, half-human children.
As the two grew older, one would develop the desire to defeat the Deity, just as the Deity had done with the Goddess. The Younger Twin had persuaded her twin to let her try. The Elder Twin agreed as she prayed to the deceased Goddess and God for her sister's safety.
The Younger Twin was severely injured when she faced the Deity, but she triumphed! She was given the honor of becoming the new Life Goddess.
The Older Twin was prepared to accept that she would die sooner than her twin, but she was unexpectedly given the honor of becoming the new Death God.
The Twins ruled together and restored peace to the Four Races as Angels and Demons reappeared, but the story of their triumph and the existence of Demons and Angels would fade into obscurity.
Demons, Angels, and others that are related to this AU -
Leanna and Luella (both demons)
Nurse (demon technically) and Curse (demon)

Additional AU Facts to know -
When an angel's wings are gravely hurt, they’re often put on the brink of death.
Lighter punishment for sinners includes: Serve the church as a means of repentance. Commit to doing good deeds and assisting in the healing of the SOULS they have harmed with their sins.
Harsher punishment for sinners includes: Inflict the same amount of pain on yourself as you did on your victim. (This is typically reserved for those who have committed murder.) This usually causes the Sinner to feel and endure the amount of pain they inflicted on their victim until they repent. Take one finger for each sin you’ve committed. (These are only for the most heinous of sinners.)
Harsh punishments, essentially, transfer the pain they inflict on their victims to themselves. It is a severe punishment that usually results in bodily harm and pain.
Most angels keep their true species and identity a secret for their own safety and the safety of their brethren.
Executioners get their own weapon forged by Isaac.
The amount of wings an angel has represents how powerful they are and how old they are.
An Author's Brief History of the AU: Angels Fall is one of my original AUs. It was just an AU where all my main 14 Skeleton Ladies are Angels who live in a Church next to a bunch of my Skeleton Boys and fall in love with them. Where the Deities had a sort of a back seat to the actual story being as Iyla was a nameless Goddess that the Angels report to.
Later, @1-800-roflmao inspired me to make a species called "The Beast Tamers" which lead to the creation of Jinx, Leigh, Altair, and Felicity, which lead to the creation of Tyr and Sarafina and various other OCs. Which I decided to connect to the Angels Fall AU.
Then recently, @kalquinn inspired me to expand more on the Angels Fall world. And here we are! Anyone can make a sona for this AU. But I would advise against Deity sonas.

Always you // r.l
Tonks realized that it was always you he wanted
Warnings; sad(?), dialogue in the beginning is from the books, I just altered it a bit so it would fit with the story plot
-
-
“You see!" said a strained voice. Tonks was glaring at Lupin. Fleur had just stated to molly that she still loved bill even after he was bitten during the fight.
Tonks had never believed in love at first sight, not until she made eye contact with Remus lupin.
She still remembers the first time she met him, Tonks was the new auror who was too young to be in the first war and he was the mysterious, but sweet man who was also a werewolf.
But now all she remembers is that her hair can’t change color and that Remus lupin doesn’t love her back.
She wanted him to want her, she wanted to show him that she didn’t care if he was older or a lycanthrope. She loved him.
"She still wants to marry him, even though he's been bitten! She doesn't care!"
"It's different," said Lupin, barely moving his lips and looking suddenly tense, not meeting tonks’ gaze, seeming to look for something, someone. "Bill will not be a full werewolf. The cases are completely-"
"But I don't care either, I don't care!" said Tonks, seizing the front of Lupin's robes and shaking them. "I've told you a million times...."
And the meaning of Tonk's Patronus and her mouse-colored hair, and the reason she had come running to find Dumbledore when she had heard a rumor someone had been attacked by Greyback, all suddenly became clear to everyone; it had not been Sirius that Tonks had fallen in love with after all.
Tonks was interrupted by the sounds of loud steps coming to the infirmary, everyone raised their wands thinking it was a death eater
“Y/n” remus completely discarded tonks declaration as he ran to you, “were where you?” He held your waist tightly.
“I was caught up with some death eaters” you breathed out “had to stun a few but im here”
“Good” he closed his eyes and so did Tonks, he relished in the moment between the two of you while she didn’t want to see the pitying looks that everyone gave her.
As she faced the darkness that was her mind she realized that it was always you.
When the order first met you alongside your brothers son, Harry, that you took care of, Remus had his eye on you the whole time. She thought it’d been because he was cautious, but now she realizes that wasn’t it.
When she had tripped over an umbrella at Grimmauld place, you helped her and then you fell, Remus laughed at you and gave you a helping hand.
She wanted to be mad, she was mad, but she didn’t have a reason to be. Remus never led her on, he never gave any sort of confirmation that he too wanted her, it was always you.
The small smiles, the vermillion paints on his cheek and lingering gazes, they were all for you.
-
The wedding was beautiful, everyone was staring at her in awe. Even in the midst of war, the marriage between the two of them was what everyone needed.
Tonks remembers walking down the aisle, seeing Remus waiting at the front of the room.
Does he think I look good? She would ask herself.
What does he think of my hair? My dress! How does my dress look? What does Remus think of my dress? A hundred thoughts were running through Tonks’ head until she heard the werewolf clear his throat to say his vows.
“Every full moon I was reminded of the monster I thought I was, I never believed that I’d ever have someone like you love me. You’re so beautiful and kind and caring, and clumsy sometimes” he chuckled “I’d never want to spend my life with anyone but you. I promise to protect you and care for you until I die” remus declared, the mouse-haired girl teared up at his meaningful words.
Harry handed her a handkerchief so she could wipe her tears, she covered her eyes as she saw Remus lean in for the kiss that sealed the marriage of the two.
She was happy, but all she could think about is how she shouldn’t be here.
“And now I pronounce you, mister and misses lupin”
If there was any hope, which there wasn’t unless it was just stupid hopeful thinking, that Remus lupin would ever give her a chance, it was all demolished.
Another tear fell down her cheek when she saw you and lupin walk hand in hand down the aisle as everyone clapped for the newly wed couple, she faked a smile as the same four words ran through her head.
It was always you

Hypnosis Microphone
Kanra’s Microphone takes the form of a handheld mic made of see-through glass with a dark red liquid that swirls around inside. It glows an ominous red color whenever in use.
Her Speaker takes the shape of a giant woman with bat wings. She has pitch black hair styled into a hime cut. A crown of red spider lilies is on her head with a set of devil horns peeking through. She wears a dress that appears to be made of a red liquid that drips down and pools around Kanra's feet. The top of her dress is also open in a way that shows the speaker embedded in the middle of her chest. A second speaker is revealed when she opens her mouth. Her arms are spread to the side, and on her wrists are a set of metal shackles with chains that hang down to the floor. Her eyes are closed, but when Kanra gets serious, she will open them to reveal empty sockets that begin to cry blood-red tears.
Her rap ability, Resonate, allows any damage done to her to be replicated on the opponent.
Kanra’s rap centers around her short temper and how she dares anyone to pick a fight with her. That she'll show them why she is called a demon straight from hell. She raps about her lack of memories and how she hopes to one day figure out who she is. She also references her terrifying strength and how easy it would be to break a person in half if she really wanted to.
Personality
Kanra is a sweet and kind young girl, befitting her status as one of the youngest competitors in the Division Rap Battles. She's a bit of an airhead and has no awareness of danger, often walking into dangerous situations with no fear. She is extremely curious about the world, often asking questions with many seeing her as naive because of this. Despite this, Kanra is far smarter than people believe. (She has to be lest she kills someone with her strength.) She is quick to pick up on things and only needs a few tries to master a skill.
One of Kanra’s more famous traits is her short temper and won't hesitate to use her strength on the people who’ve angered her. Her anger frightens many, with some even calling her a devil from the depths of hell. Even at her angriest, Kanra makes sure not to use her full strength, knowing full well that she can seriously harm someone and even potentially kill a person.
What people don’t know is that underneath her sweet nature, Kanra is an extremely traumatized child. From her lack of memories to the horrifying nightmares that have been constantly haunting her, Kanra keeps it all buried within. Entering the D.R.B. seems to have made it worse, with Kanra feeling something trying to escape her mind. Kanra does her best to push it back, but it’s only a matter of time before whatever is trying to escape breaks out.
Background
In a separate post coming soon.
Trivia
Kanra is the one who cooks most group meals, finding it therapeutic.
Kanra is well known for ripping street signs out of the ground and swinging them when pissed.
Kanra suffers from frequent nightmares.
It's unknown exactly how strong Kanra actually is, but she is able to stop a speeding car with her bare hands and stated that she “barely worked a sweat” doing that.
Kanra due to her height and baby face is often mistaken for an elementary school student.
She is extremely durable being able to take blows that would knock out most people.
She has an emotional support cat by the name of Haku who she found nearly dead in an alleyway.

Heiress Ascendant
Sir Ideus Lightrest, son of Idean, brother of Lord Zhar Lightrest, was not a very smart man.
When the sentries spotted him hobbling onto the Dawnglory estate, swaying across the path like a three-legged kodo, they snorted and humored each other with obscene musings. One chucked his apple core; the watchtower’s vantage gave him enough wind to smack the drunkard in the back of his greasy head.
After further insult and witticism, the guards returned to their watch, and Ideus disappeared among the towering oaks and mournful willows. None thought to inquire as to why he was returning, inebriated and lonesome, an hour after sunset.
His was an ill-fated promenade, as he quickly lost track of the path that led to the modest Lightrest village. The union between High Lady Anavela and Lord Jorian Lightrest held privilege beyond the Magistrate intrigue of such a powerful union-- a small satellite estate was promptly erected next to the Dawnglory Thistle fields, and it was here that Ideus spent most of his time.
Now he was lost and slurring a string of curses: half a dozen misremembered directions found him standing before the Lady’s library. When her eyes saw more than magic and malice, the building was her favored haunt, and it often swallowed her for days at a time.
A conspiratorial glance left, then right. Ideus set off at a brisk, straight stride for the door. Matrixed with cobwebs, its handle long since rusted, Ideus wasted no time trying to open it physically-- no, that wouldn’t work, it never had. A burst of violet light followed a murmured incantation, and the door swung open with a resounding bang.
Ideus cursed and slipped through the door, magicking it shut behind himself. As he moved deeper into the library his form writhed and contorted, wilted like a forgotten flower. He emerged from the winding staircase a petite, white-haired elven woman. Wispy hair was pulled hastily into a bun, and sharp features jutted into a grimace. The hem of her persimmon robe trailed the dusty carpet.
From her left came a series of high-pitched, mechanical creaks. Instinctively, she pressed a finger to the signet ring on her left hand, holding it there until the miniature Arcane Guardian phased through the wall.
“LADY FLEUREINE.” Catlike, its head tilted to the side. Fleureine could see both magical and natural dust mingling on the mana crystals that breathed life into stone and steel.
“Butler,” Fleureine said after she remembered how to speak. “Open the archives, please.”
Its limbs jerked mechanically as it hastened to obey; silver light spilled from its ‘hands’ and bathed the ‘wall’ it had emerged from. One suspended moment, measured by the breadth of a heartbeat, passed before the layer of silver solidified, spilled like a viscous waterfall down towards the floor. In its wake was an arching doorway; the keystone was painted the same vermillion color as her robe, and a violet dragonhawk was etched into the stone.
Fleureine found herself momentarily unable to move. Twenty years since she’d entered the Dawnglory sanctum-- after father’s death and mother’s disappearance she’d lost interest, instead immersing herself in the intrigues of politics and the Magistry’s rebuilding efforts.
“Oh, come off it,” she grumbled to herself before crossing under the arch. It creaked shut behind her.
The room was a sprawling archive. Its center was a pentagon ten meters in diameter; from each leg jutted a hallway whose walls were towering bookshelves, colorful spines painting a patchwork across the hall. They were were bookended by lifesize portraits of Dawnglory nobility: Arius, Vanna, Sorra (whose face was burned from her portrait), Anavela, Varus, and now Fleureine, who-- as the heiress-- had her portrait against one of the walls of the central chamber. The entire complex was well-lit by arcane orbs that hung like violet Suns from the ceiling. Arcane familiars darted in and out of the halls. Once keepers of the archives, their purpose was all but lost without a mistress to guide them.
Fleureine threw herself down Varus’ hallway, violet spindles spilling from pointed fingertips. They swept the books, rolling like a searchlight across leather and cloth. Mahogany shelves glimmered with dust, and the Arcane familiars pooled at her feet.
“Aha!” Fleureine closed her hand into a fist and jerked it towards herself. One of the tomes spilled from the shelves and fell open at her feet. She hastily scooped it up, clutching it to her chest, and the familiars squealed in excitement.
At the edge of her vision, He flickered into sight and said something, voice muffled. Fleureine pointedly ignored Him.
Fleureine found herself resisting the urge to spend hours, days, weeks lost amongst these tomes. They could swallow her easily as the ocean, as the forests often had when she was a child. Her heart danced a jig in her chest, cartwheeled into her stomach.
She turned heel, making for the exit. The Arcane nature of the room was such that tearing a new portal at its center would cause something of a magical sinkhole, destruction enough to level the entire Estate. She could still remember Mother’s gently chiding voice, a hand resting on the awestruck Fleureine’s trembling shoulder. “One day, this entire library will be yours,” Anavela had said, and Fleureine’s heart had soared.
Fleureine crossed to the door and tried the handle. It wouldn’t budge.
“Butler,” Fleureine called.
“MY LADY.” The Guardian promptly shimmered to life to her left.
“Open the door.”
“LADY ANAVELA HAS ORDERED THE DOOR CLOSED.”
Fleur felt panic rise in her chest; quickly she raised a hand, launched a barrage of Arcane bolts at the door. They simmered and fizzled to smoke. Stumbling over her feet, she walked the central chamber’s perimeter, feeling along the walls with trembling fingertips, desperately seeking another exit.
“Fleur,” He said.
“Shut up,” she seethed, now shaking so badly the book was threatening to spill from her arms. She swore she heard laughter from just outside-- familiar but unhinged, augmented by the same chaos that turned her own eyes green. Arcane burst from her palms, bathed the walls, searching for cloaked magic that might allow her an escape.
“Use the familiars.” His voice was smug.
A scream of frustration tore free of her chest. It startled her, weakened her knees. Waving a hand, the Arcane coalesced and washed over the Arcane familiars now huddled next to her portrait. “Find me an exit!” The command was shrill, barely audible over the laughter that grew ever closer.
The familiars tripped over themselves to obey. They moved to the door Butler had so obediently sealed, throwing themselves at it, tumbling and separating into pools of Arcane. Finally, one wedged itself into the lock: a single moment passed before the door was blown open, glimmering shrapnel slinging through the room and into the hall beyond. Fleur raised a hand to cover her eyes even as the shielding enchantment in her signet ring sprung to life, drawing on her Arcane to erect a powerful mana shield.
When she opened her eyes, she saw her mother thrown back against the wall beyond the doorway, struggling back to her feet.
Fleureine reacted first, tongues of flame lashing from her fingertips and curling around Anavela’s wrists; she found herself running, Blinking whenever she could, robes hitched up and curled into her fists--
As she emerged into the night something horribly solid crashed into her back, throwing her into a tumbling heap across the overgrown yard. The tome slid from her grip.
Leathery wings blocking the moon, war glaives drawn, Anavela glided down towards her daughter. That same laughter boomed through the night, in her ears, and Fleureine knew the guards would be coming any time now.
“You have to get out,” He reminded her.
Not without the tome. Fleureine scrambled to her feet and invoked her mana shield, breaking for the book. Bolts of Fel annihilated with the Arcane, fizzling; Fleureine stumbled as the mana was drained from her blood. She scooped up the book even as Anavela hit the ground some forty meters before her, rolling and leaping to her feet before breaking into a dead sprint. A scream caught in her throat, Fleureine raised a hand. Bolts of fire rocketed out of her palms, parted around Anavela’s glaives, singed her hair. She didn’t falter.
Cursing, Fleur Blinked to the left and aimed another series of fire bolts. Anavela met these with another swing of her glaives.
From the trees at Anavela’s back emerged a tall, bony and hooded figure, his face cast into darkness, and it was then that Fleureine knew she was going to die.
Desperation. Dropping her tome, Fleureine used both hands for spellcasting. Anavela met fireballs with the swing of her glaives, faltered briefly against Fleureine’s onslaught. The hooded figure raised his hands, and Fleur felt the air spring to life around her.
Roaring in outrage, Anavela hurled her glaive at Fleureine; Fel spattered from its steel, arced into the night sky as it honed in on the mage. At the same time, a bolt of white lightning cascaded down from the heavens and struck the demon huntress off her feet, threw her into a small copse of trees.
The mana shield wasn’t enough. Throwing herself from the weapon simply didn’t suffice, and its razor edge sliced into her side. Fleureine felt the corruption seeping into her blood immediately, like an oil spill across clear waters.
She threw a coil of Arcane, and the tome jerked itself back into her hands. As the hooded figure readied another spell Fleureine tore as much Arcane as she could from her veins-- to hell with the repercussions. Magics washing over her, she vanished, only a pool of blood to mark where she’d been standing.

How do dragons hear...
As it turns out, the dragons of the Temeraire-verse have external ears. Of course, you probably wouldn't know that as a fact if you were just doing a general readthrough of the series; this is a fact mentioned a total of three times in the series, as somewhat throwaway lines. Each mention is roughly one sentence, and the mentions are one in book seven, once in book eight, and once in book nine, and are not overly descriptive (Edit correction: there are two mentions of Temeraire’s ears pricking in chapter 10 of Black Powder War, but I expect we didn’t notice the previous times we read it due to ‘pricking ears’ being used with people as a term for listening closely/attentively). What these mentions tell us, though, is that it is every dragon; book seven is a South American dragon (once we came into possession of books 3-8 in 2016 we re-read the whole series. Upon reaching the relevant sentence in book seven, I think we spent a good ten minutes staring and re-reading it going "what. What?? Am I reading this right? Am I interpreting it right? ??????"), book eight, Temeraire (a Chinese dragon), and book nine (which we managed to borrow from a library) was that grey Scottish feral whose name I cannot find on the internet. (I'd find the exact lines, but all my Anatomy page markers in our copies of 7/8 are tissue paper because we ran out of the type of stickytab we used, which makes it. A lot harder to pick out each page that’s been marked. Also, opening the pages eternally runs the risk of the tissue piece escaping. Someday we'll be reading through those books again and replace that tissue paper with stickytabs)
Tumblr media
Descriptions below
The top left corner of this page is predominantly us thinking about fleur-de-nuits, who have "narrow curving horns flaring out from [their] forehead, just above the eyes" (pages 126/127, Throne of Jade, paperback edition) pointy-faced thing in the bottom-right of THEM is a Jade dragon think (heads described as "... with a broad curving forehead and a long arrow-shaped muzzle..." (page 348, Throne of Jade, paperback edition), later also described as 'foxlike', if I remember rightly) (also, a random dragon next to the sheep-horn-style fleur) Bottom left is Celestial, and quite frankly, bugger their ruff for a joke, what even (like. I don’t even know. We’re currently rereading Throne of Jade and took note that at various times the ‘horns’ that support the ruff are described as ‘curving’ at some point, ‘flexible’, and Qian’s (page 383, ToJ, pb) as “a great standing ruff of translucent black stretched among ribbed horns of vermillion” (which admittedly always throws us off, because why are they red?). mid-bottom is a kazilik. Feathery looking ones are obviously South American dragons. Some longwings with their ‘bone spurs’ aka. modified teeth because that is a logical conclusion to draw (although gosh darn, anatomy can do some pretty bizarre things.) A bunch of Regal Copper thinks in the bottom right quarter of the page (with our usual sort of head design for them, although we were poking at the anatomy a bit for the head-on views)(we just like drawing their horns like that) along with a chequered nettle, parnassian, and Kulingile (many people, it should be noted, draw his parent breeds with horns; this is incorrect, as it is noted when Kulingile's grow that nobody knows where they came from because said parent breeds do not have them.) (I should go and find the exact quote to write here at some point) Also a whole bunch of random dragon heads.
In other news, us discovering this leaves some internal part of us screaming because it means an inaccuracy on all our previous fanarts of this series.

Decorative Leather Techniques
http://jacksparrowcostuming.net/images/sccabards1.pdf
“Leather Decoration an Overview: Decorative Techniques Used
The decorative motifs in medieval leatherwork often seem to echo designs in other media, including stone sculpture and illuminated manuscripts. (Cowgill 40 – 41) The concept of horror vacui is prevalent – the idea that designs be adapted to fill the visible space. (Cowgill 42) This is seen from scabbards to shoes, from belts to boxes. Symmetry and balance are also important design elements. In some cases, the imagery on leather items is very similar to that on woodcuts, with rather flat designs and cross-hatching to delineate background from foreground. Other designs incorporate fairly high relief to create more realism. Color is used to enhance these effects. Abstract designs of floral work and interlace are also very common. The workmanship on medieval leather items ranges from fairly simple and crude to incredibly ornate and skillful.
Based upon images in medieval manuscripts and paintings, many leather items like shoes and accessories were brightly colored. Leather dye soaks into the item to provide all over coloring. A variety of dyes for leather were recorded in The Plictho, a 1548 Italian dye manual by Gioanventura Rosetti. Ways to color leather red, blue, green, yellow, and black were included. (Rosetti 65 - 83; 159 - 180) [...]
Examples of dyes used on vegetable tanned leather are even rarer. There is one simple method to dye vegetable tanned leather black that has been used for a very long time, however. It uses a chemical reaction between the tannins in the leather and iron oxide. This reaction is the basis for oak gall ink, recorded in On Divers Arts by Theophilus in the 12th century (Theophilus 42 - 43). Vegetable tanned leather exposed to rusty water (or a combination of iron and vinegar) will quickly turn black. This is now being used as a spot testto check the tannage of unknown pieces of leather found on archaeological sites. (van-Driel Murray, 2000 316) This reaction also occurs when leather is in contact with iron-rich soil. This can significantly change the color of leather items after burial, making it hard to determine the original color and decoration.
Leather items were also brightly painted, although little paint survives in archaeological contexts. There are several extant European examples of cases painted in a variety of colors, including red, white, and yellow in the German Leather Museum. (Figures 1 – 7) Many of these have a black background, which could either be black paint, or the black iron oxide dye. Traces of cinnabar (vermillion) paint have been found on a girdle from Anglo- Saxon York, (Mould et. al. 3393) as well as on two scabbards from medieval London. (Cowgill 40) In his treatise Il Libro dell'Arte (The Craftsman's Handbook), Cennino Cennini mentions that leather should be coated with gesso before being painted. (108) Oil paints and egg tempera paint will work on leather, but the included examples are probably oil based paint.
The application of gold leaf was used on expensive leather items, particularly book bindings, religious cases, and showpieces like parade shields. This was a very specialized process, since it involved stamping the leather two times with each stamp – once to form the impression and then again to apply the gold. (Waterer, 1968 38; Gall, 1967 28) The stamps had convex decorations, which when pressed on the leather made sunken designs to hold the gold and keep it from getting worn off. They were usually heated, which helped the design stay crisp, since books were often covered in alum tawed leather, which doesnt take stamping very well. (Salaman 1) To apply the gold, the leather was covered with a base coat (usually red paint), followed by a coating of glair (egg white, vinegar, and water) – a process very similar to how gold was applied to illuminations. (Salaman 8; Gall, 1967 28) (Figure 7) [...]
Vegetable tanned leather can be molded into fairly complex shapes, depending on the heat of the water used to dampen it. Cuir bouilli (boiled leather) is a technique used to make very hard leather items like armor and drinking vessels. The water should not be boiling; the best temperature is between 140 and 180°F, based upon personal experience and other re-creationist experiments. Once soaked in the hot water, the leather becomes very elastic and stretchy, and can be formed into curves and shapes. Once it cools, it can still be molded, but not to a great extent. After such heating, the leather is more compact and significantly harder. Leather items can also be dried in an oven on low temperature (approximately 150°F or so) until all the water is evaporated. Such items need a last (mold form) inside to keep the leather from flattening while drying. [...] Items hardened in this way can also be decorated with paints, dyes, and stamping, although stamping must be done after the initial soaking and stretching, but before the final drying for the design to remain clear on the leather. (Figure 12)
Stamping (called engraving or punching in some sources) is probably the most common method of decorating vegetable tanned leather. It depresses areas of the leather, creating designs. The leather is dampened, and then a metal or wooden stamp is pressed into the leather, usually by hitting it with a mallet. Brass or clean (not rusted) iron is used for such tools to prevent dark marks on the leather.
Stamping is easily recognized on items with repeating single motifs, especially on book bindings and scabbards. Many of the stamps were quite simple designs like fleur-de-lis, cinquefoils, and latticework, but more complex designs have also been found. (Figures 13) [...] In contrast to single motif stamps that create a specific image, some designs were created by using a stamp to fill in the background, creating a picture in the negative space. Such designs are contrasted with single motif images because multiple copies of the same subject arent identical. (Cowgill 43; Egan and Pritchard 46) (Figure 3, 4, 6, 14) Backgrounds of round pimpling (Figure 14) were very common.
[...] Designs can also be pressed into the leather using flat and pointed tools that are not hit with a mallet. This technique is called modeling (or engraving in some sources), and can be used to create rounded shapes and figures, and free-form floral designs. These specialized tools can be used much like pencils, with harder pressure making deeper designs. [...]
In contrast to stamping and modeling, embossing pushes the leather up from the underside to make the designs. These appear as low relief raised decoration. Embossed areas often include a leather plug that supports the raised up portions of the design from behind. Most embossed leather items are made from wood and covered with leather, such as box lids or shield covers. This makes it difficult to tell if the design was made from the back (embossing) or from the front (modeling) – in fact, some authors do not distinguish between the two forms. (Cowgill 42) (Figures 1, 4, 5) [...]
Many of these techniques were combined into large scale items, usually boxes and cases covered in leather. (Figures 1 – 7) The German Leather Museum has several cases that appear to combine incising, stamping, and modeling-embossed areas, many of which are brightly painted. Several crown and coronet cases, as well as cases to hold relics and other religious items, are still preserved in museums – often with the original contents. These cases contain a variety of design styles. Many have an all over design of scrollwork, while others display mythological and religious scenes, such as interpretations of Saint George and the Dragon. (Figure 5) Heraldic displays often accompany crown cases, presumably the arms of the royalty.
Comparison to Modern Re-creationist Leatherwork
Modern re-creationists recognize the necessity of leather for items like shoes, belts, and pouches. Items covered in leather, such as boxes, chests, and carrying cases, seem rarer, however. These items appear to have been very common in medieval Europe, but usually arent seen at modern re-creationist events. Many garments would also have been made or trimmed in leather, but are not commonly used by re-creationists.
[...] Most items are not decorated correctly, however. Some re-creationists assume there was no decoration or color at all, based upon utilitarian items found at excavation sites. This is because the leather from these sites comes out of the ground a uniform brown/black color, and most items do not show any original coloration at all. [...]
At the opposite extreme, floral scroll work is common to both modern and medieval leatherwork, but is rarely used for decoration by the re-creationist. The Western Floral and Sheridan type of work is very similar to the scrollwork on many of the cases and boxes, with flowing Acanthus leaves and open circles for specialized decoration. But this type of design is not often pursued by the modern re-creationist. Compare Figure 15 to Figure 18 to see the similarities and differences in the floral work.
In addition to these examples of period designs and how they are used (or not used) by the modern re- creationist, the way space is filled in can be very different between the modern and extant examples. Many modern examples often contain just one design element, with lots of open space. As can be seen on the extant examples, this was not usually the case for medieval leather items. Virtually all of the items from the German Leather Museum appear to have all visible surfaces covered with designs, some of which do not seem to fit with the main design. This includes small vignette scenes on the sides of boxes, as well as corner decorations that complement the central image. All over designs, and those with all over backgrounds, appear to be almost completely absent in modern re-creationist leatherwork. [...]
The use of color has changed significantly as well. The variety of colors on the German museum pieces is amazing. With the greater range of colors in acrylic paint available to the modern re-creationist, the pure heraldic hues would be easy to reproduce. Most modern leather items are only dyed or very simply painted, though. Painting an entire piece is usually not done, and modern leather dye doesn’t create the same effect seen on the painted originals. Modern leatherworkers will use stains and antiquing techniques to highlight the grain structure, letting the leather show through. The re-creationist leatherworker seems to follow this practice, which appears to be a modern aesthetic rather than a medieval one, based upon the highly painted examples.
Summary
[...] And the tools of a modern leatherworker may be of zinc covered steel instead of brass or wood, but many of the stamp designs available now would not be out of place in a medieval workshop.
[...] Modern, rather than medieval, ideas and uses of decorative techniques seem to dominate in re-creationist leatherwork. While these obviously appeal to the modern person, they are not the same as what a medieval European would appreciate in leatherwork. Items decorated in such a way would probably seem very strange and out of place, based upon the extant examples - just as some of those examples seem garish and not what was expected to the modern re-creationist. This difference in appeal is at the heart of the aesthetic difference and makes recreating accurate items difficult.
The reasons for the aesthetic difference between modern and medieval leatherwork can be hard to pin down.

Acier would have adored baby Evie 🥰💜 Is auntie Fleur taking the grandmother role a bit in your au?
Yes, she would have 🥲... HAH. Yes. One thing about Fleur: if there is a baby, she is here. Fleur is 100% taking advantage of being both a Silva and a Vermillion. She'll be everyone's granny. 😂
