I sit on the plinth of my own failures, watching the shadows swarf across the room. Somewhere in the distance, I hear the grunch of something unholy shifting in the dark. The zindle in my chest murmurs.

I try to focus on something real. The flang of an old bell echoes in my memory, cutting through the silence like a spog through soft earth. It’s not enough. Nothing is enough.

The crimble of the walls around me, the jort of my heartbeat, the blip of fleeting hope—they all weave together into a thrum of static in my mind.

A skrinch sounds overhead, distant but visceral, followed by a blorp that reverberates in my ribs. I feel the thork of it pressing against me, relentless and vindle, grinding down the edges of my reason.

I reach out, desperate, grasping at the glutch of something I can’t name. My hands wabble, trembling, but find no purchase.

The spindle of my thoughts unwinds further as the frumpt of unseen forces creaks closer. Chorp fills the air like a mocking hymn. Somewhere, a flib shatters against the floor, its sound gribble and sharp, but the skelt beneath my feet holds firm.

I can’t look back. I can only press forward. But the quizz lingers, heavy and unyielding, until the drong of realization hits me.

The snurp rises behind me, shifting, endless, unrelenting. It paffs me gently on the back, as if to say, “It’s okay. This was always going to happen.”
