This is now my blog for any Redwall themed tournaments I feel like doing or that anyone else may suggest. Best Villain and Most Tragic Death have been done elsewhere but anything else is fair game.
Same mod as @incorrectredwallquotes
Starting out simple with best Redwall book. In order to make the math pretty I’ve included The Great Redwall Feast and A Redwall Winters Tale, additionally the semi-finals will feature triple contestants. Polls will last a week to get some traction.
Match Ups Round 1:
Redwall vs. Eualia Winner: Redwall
Lord Brocktree vs. Marlfox Winner: Marlfox
The Long Patrol vs. Mariel of Redwall Winner: Mariel of Redwall
Rakkety Tam vs. Martin the Warrior Winner: Martin the Warrior
Triss vs. A Redwall Winters Tale Winner: Triss
Mattimeo vs. Outcast of Redwall Winner: Mattimeo
Salamandastron vs. High Rhulain Winner: Salamandastron
Pearls of Lutra vs. Doomwyte Winner: Pearls of Lutra
The Bellmaker vs. Mossflower Winner: Mossflower
The Great Redwall Feast vs. The Sable Quean Winner: The Sable Quean
Loamhedge vs. The Taggerung Winner: The Taggerung
Legend of Luke vs. The Rogue Crew Winner: Legend of Luke
Match Ups Round 2:

Redwall vs. Marlfox Winner: Redwall
Mariel of Redwall vs. Martin the Warrior Winner: Martin the Warrior
Triss vs. Mattimeo Winner: Mattimeo
Salamandastron vs. Pearls of Lutra Winner: Pearls of Lutra
Mossflower vs. The Sable Quean Winner: Mossflower
The Taggerung vs. Legend of Luke Winner: The Taggerung
Match Ups Round 3:

For this round only one contestant will be eliminated, the remaining two contestants will swap competitors and move onto the semi-finals.
Redwall vs. Martin the Warrior vs. Mattimeo Eliminated: Mattimeo
Pearls of Lutra vs. Mossflower vs. The Taggerung Eliminated: Pearls of Lutra
Match Ups Semi-Finals

Contestants have swapped competitors to avoid going against the same book as the previous round.
Martin the Warrior vs. The Taggerung
Redwall vs. Mossflower

In terms of food I know they have the Redwall Cookbook! I've liked what I've tried making from it. There's also people who have made other versions of the same recipes.
Sometimes it's greensap milk, I think we're mostly just supposed to assume plant substitutes? That's what I've ended up doing tbh.
I'm pretty sure we do see at least one town-type location (Noonvale in Martin the Warrior) and some that are kind of an animal-based equivalent of a town (the mole group in Southsward in The Bellmaker, several otter holts) but they just... aren't called towns or cities? It's definitely an interesting question though, since we really don't see many stationary groups outside of large structures (the Abbey/castles), and when we do see them they tend to be one species and not very large.
It seems that there's a lot of communal resources and sharing, without currency, so... either pre-capitalism or post-capitalism maybe? It's weird and ambiguous and I try not to read too much into it xD
Yeah it's a little odd--there's not much handling of large scale food production anywhere. I know there's mention of different folk going off to be farmers (Clerun Kordyne from The Sable Quean is the one that comes to mind) but... not enough to sustain a large population. They do celebrate harvests and such so I wonder if there is farming but it's one of the areas that just doesn't get actively touched on through the series (such as sanitation, minor repairs to the building, any textile production, etc.). (We have the most record of a few specific jobs and really not much outside of that... leadership, childcare, recordkeeping, infirmary keeper, and kitchen work seem to be the only things with much elaboration.)
No same that seems like something that should have happened at least once! We get a lot of good interspecies platonic relationships, which I appreciate, but it seems strange that that's the extent of it. Especially given instances like Jodd who despite being raised by squirrels and considering himself a squirrelhare ends up marrying a hare?
One of the great questions--size. Everyone in the fandom that I know has kind of given up on this one.
Would mouse insurance bank on mouse currency? I think it's a good concept tbh but idk if you can have insurance type stuff without a more clear financial system in place?
It's kinda just a Thing imo that a lot of the world is blurry and vibes based xD makes sense for a kids book, and since stuff like geography is also so vague it stands to reason that things like economics would be. It's so fun to think about tho (<- has been trying to work out patterns in the supernatural/spiritual abilities within the series and work out if there is anything more than vague vibes for religion)
hobbies include: close reading the Redwall series to answer my most burning questions. such as:
- can I replicate any of these delicious-sounding foodstuffs and would they in fact be delicious if I was able to
- corollary to the above: are we just supposed to read “oat cream” and “nut cheese” every time we see the words “cream” and “cheese”? I think so. bc if not, what tha hell are their livestock animals
- what is Society like? I don’t think we ever see a Mouse City or even Mouse Town though we do see castles and obviously an abbey. are we supposed to believe that most creatures are either in wandering bands or these societies based around a single structure (castle/abbey?)
- they appear to have an idea of what currency is (the bad guys always want treasure — maybe just to have, not to sell? but less ambiguous is some dialogue I just read, “acorn for your thoughts?” “you can have them for free”) but again, we never see anyone using money or making goods for the market. is this after the fall of Mouse Capitalism? are the bad guys (the idea of rat pirates gives me a headache, vis a vis the political/economic systems needed to power piracy) raiding preindustrial mouse societies for treasure/meat?
- corollary to the above: the abbey creatures have oats and wheat but we don’t see anybody farming or trading for farm goods on a large enough scale. is the abbey “orchard” really a like an indigenous forest farm of mixed foodstuffs? is that possible if you live in the same place the whole year or only if you travel each season? I have to do some googling
- both the lack of mixed-species families and the idea of mixed-species families give me a headache. has a squirrel never fallen for a handsome otter? what is the culture shock like if you marry into a subterranean mole family?
- this is the least “important” question but this read through I’ve been desperately trying to figure out What Size Everything Else Is. i’ve come to the conclusion that everything other than animals are at mouse scale, given that they can make seaworthy vessels their own size (a mouse sized vessel with real-world-sized waves seems impossible) and pick and eat apples and plums. but so far it seems like they’ve avoided mentioning how tall trees are — like a person compared to a tree or a mouse compared to a tree?

TOLD YOU I WAS GONNA DO IT
Disclosure: This list is incomplete bc I haven't finished rereading the entire series (I don't even own the entire series...yet) and I don't want whatever I remember from reading as a child to color my opinion as an adult. For example, my opinion of Mossflower did a 180; I like it way more now than I did as a kid.
I WILL be updating this once I finish rereading the whole series.
I'm gonna write out the tiers btw bc Tumblr crunchitizes images and the covers were difficult to read before the crunchitizing. But if you're a Redwall stan who can identify based on the covers (like me) you won't need the list written out.
(Also don't read into the order of the books in the tiers. I moved some around bc I put some thought into it, and even before then I had the pictures uploaded based on order in the series.)
S Tier: Redwall, Mariel of Redwall
A Tier: Mossflower, The Bellmaker, High Rhulain, The Sable Quean, Doomwyte
B Tier: Triss, Marlfox, Lord Brocktree, The Rogue Crew
C Tier: Eulalia!, The Long Patrol
And fuck it, I'll put some of my reasons under the read more if you're curious.
I'm not explaining my thought processes for all of them, bc for some books it just boils down to "idk I just liked this one better", but here are some of my thoughts that I can actually articulate.
Be warned - hot takes (and spoilers) ahead.
Redwall: Not only is it a tough task to knock the one that started it all, but there's very little to knock about the book! I was DELIGHTED rereading this. It's so well-written and has everything I love about the series in it. And I had forgotten just how endearing most of the characters were.
Mariel of Redwall: Look. I'm biased. I love a good warrioress story. But like Redwall, this one held up way more than I was expecting. Again, there's not much to knock about the book, and props have to be given for putting a gal in the spotlight and knocking it out of the park, particularly given the tendency towards some sexist tropes in the series (esp in later books, as stuff got a bit flanderized).
The Sable Quean: I think my literal only complaint about this book (other than Diggs, who is just Way Too Much, and I love the hare characters) is the implication that Clarinna was possessed by the spirit of Martin the Warrior and that's how she killed Zwilt. Come on! This series is all about persons from humble beginnings taking up arms and finding heroism, and there are SO MANY characters who are after vengeance for the loss of their loved ones. My girl Clarinna deserved better. If it weren't for that and Diggs, this would be S Tier.
Triss: As I said before, I love a good warrioress story. But Triss falls a bit short for me. Maybe because it feels a bit like a rehash of stuff we've seen again and again in this series. Kinda hated Scarum as a character which is wild bc I usually love the hares. Also wtf is that scene where Welfo and Urtica are like, silently staring into each other's eyes while they eat? The mental image of that scene haunts me. And how did Triss not know her full name, legitimately.
Lord Brocktree: Brocktree is such a milquetoast character. He's just some guy! The book shouldn't be named after him, it should be named after the TRUE hero and person who brings some personality to the story, Dotti.
The Rogue Crew: The setup for this book is killer. But the execution is mid. In particular, the beginning of the book felt more like a summary of someone's outline notes. I know that this was published posthumously, so I wonder if that could play into it. Maybe the book wasn't fully done, it was mostly done. Which would explain the parts of the book (like the beginning) that felt like a very different style of writing from Brian Jacques' usual. Another thought would be that maybe his health wasn't as good, which could have influenced the writing. Like Raising Steam by Terry Pratchett, written as he was struggling with Alzheimer's, and imo one of the weakest Discworld books. But who knows.
Eulalia!: This is my least favorite book I've reread. I couldn't remember jack about it before picking it up to reread and I understand why now. It just...dragged on. A lot of the little side adventures that tend to happen in these books felt extremely extraneous. There wasn't enough to make it feel different from the other books in the series. And I had difficulty really enjoying or connecting with many of the characters, with the exception of Mad Maudie. She's the reason the book isn't D Tier, tbh.
The Long Patrol: I actually REALLY enjoyed this book, it was really good. Which is why it's not D Tier. I bumped it down from A or B bc I really didn't like how Cregga got fixed by basically becoming a mother at the end. The Redwall books definitely have some sexist tropes here and there, which I've noticed in rereading, but this was very blatant and a rather upsetting resolution to a warrioress like Lady Cregga Rose Eyes. Though I will admit she never fully abandons her warrioress ways (as seen in later books), it left a bad taste in my mouth here.
One of these days I'm gonna do that tier rating thing but do it for the Redwall books bc like everything in my life I have Opinions about them
