Writing Exercise 2- POV

The café erupts into pandemonium. John, hunched over a black coffee, eyes glued to a newspaper that he hasn’t turned in two hours, notices this fact when a waiter elbows him in the face, arms raised high as her legs dance around in a panic. Dropping the scalding cup sharply among the six others sat around him, he jerks his head up to the sight of broken glass and a spilling buffet trailing drunkenly along the ground. As he follows it with his eyes, they snap to a cornered, spitting and angry blur, held back by fearful trays and accusing spatulas. The ferret, in all its 40 cm glory, reminds him then of medieval depictions of bears, arms high and clawing, jaws wide and snapping. The speed at which it darts about reminds him of the length of floor to the exit, in all its 10 metre glory. He peers hesitantly past the tiles, sharp and slippery, to the crowd pressing at the door, and on to the bystanders peeking in the shaded windows. Pressing further into the comforting enclosure he had picked, now feeling rather trapped by the same feature that soothed him, he begins to rather regret picking today to try and overcome his agoraphobia.

“Oo…ah…wah?!?” the waitress wasn’t at her most articulate - but then again, no one would be, when surprised by a panicking ferret dashing through their feet.Internally though, she was much more calm than the instinctual yelp might have suggested. At first, of course, pure muscle memory had to take over, as she danced on her legs, shifting the centre of balance so that she dropped the least amount of things in her near-stumble. As she steadied herself on the nearest table, she could see that the kitchen staff seemed to have the situation contained, hemming in as they did the ferret in one corner of the cafe, using their trays and spatulas to keep themselves outside of bite-range. Of course - they’d just had their animal safety refresher training. The thought calmed her down immensely.The cafe’s patrons, too, seemed to have mostly begun to settle back down. One guy, though, was still hunched with his feet up on his seat, eyes darting back and forth towards the exit, as if he was about to bolt out at any moment. “Um… sir, are you alright?” she tried to get his attention without startling him too much.

The room was filled with sounds of laughter and non-stop conversations. As Mamy cut the knife through her birthday cake, Ogie came up unexpectedly and shoved her cake slice onto Mary’s face. Ogie let out a hearty laugh, with just the slightest hint of mean spirit in her voice. Mary glanced around the room, observing the reactions of her guests. Shebby instinctively covered her mouth in shock, looking around before their eyes met. Jarad howled with his hands on his hips like he had just heard the funniest joke in the world. His voice, like Ogie’s, rang out awkwardly through the uncomfortable silence. Mamy flexed up every fibre of her being not to glare at the two of them and laughed in unison, followed by small chuckles from those still confused.

Ogie was a short statured woman with a smile like a viper. She was good at what she did, and she did what she was good at. On meetings with her family - that is, birthdays, funerals and Christmases, that meant stealing the spotlight - and keeping it. The bustling conversation, the lazy flow of smoke from waxy, melting candles, the brilliant grin on Mary’s face. It bored her - worse, it annoyed her. Mary the golden child, Mamy who studied nursing, Mary the saviour of all those poor invalids and elderly slobs who hung on to her every word. It repulsed Ogie. She was different, she was forging her own path. A pioneer, branching out from the family ditch of doctors and lawyers and same old same old with a steady career in the Municipal Department of Sanitation and a budding music career - fourth singer in the church choir (she counted. Jessi could covet her seat closer to the limelight but she had to know that she just wasn’t cut out for it). She knew just how to spice up this bumbling night of plastic pleasantries and vapid congratulations - how to ‘cut the cake’ of this drab atmosphere with something Real.  Smile creeping on her face as she readied her sophisticated prank, her arm heaved like the star hitter in a peewee baseball class, slinging a cake-filled home run directly into her sister’s dopey face. Hoh! Hahah! Hahaha! What a performance, she snickered, at her sister’s poor concealment of her irritation. Where’s the saintly martyr now, glaring through her cakey makeup? Eyes widening, sweet disposition falling back into place as she glances hastily around the room, making sure nobody saw her facade slipping? Her father, ever the connoisseur of high art, joined with a raucous joy, always quick to pick up on Ogie's elegant wit. Mary, surely realising her embarrassing slowness, belatedly follows with a thin, faltering laugh, as the onlookers finally caught up to the joke with their scattered chuckles. The icing on the cake was her mother’s wide eyed shock, a deer in headlights stunned yet again by Ogie’s shining charisma.

“Ashworth & Associates - this is Rachel speaking. How may I help you today?” she breathed cherrily into the phone. The day was a busy one, as always - she had to put the call briefly on hold, three sentences in, to greet Mr. Ashworth’s 11.25 appointment and point her to the right waiting room - but she saw that as no reason to not be friendly. Fake it till you make it, they say - and she was proud that no one could ever detect a hint of forcedness in her customer service voice. She was halfway through the next phone call when they were interrupted by a low clang! “My apologies, may I put you on hold for a sec?” she quickly pushed the button, as the meeting room’s door swung open and 11.25 ran out, sobbing. Through the corner of her eyes, she could see the tray of complimentary drinks still rolling, wobbling. “You can’t do that to me!” the 11.25 appointment collapsed not that far from the door, wailing. “That’s my house! You… you guys can’t take it from me… please…” Heads were starting to poke out of the doorways, to see what was going on.

Shannon couldn’t restrain herself anymore. Tears ran down her cheeks as a drop fell onto her hand. She stood up and threw the glass into the ground, the shards scattering across the marble floor. She shoved at the door as if it was her worst enemy and swung it open, the angry slam drowning out the resigned pleas from Mr Ashworth. 

Unable to feel her legs, she fell to the ground in the hallway. The receptionist looked at her in shock. 

“My apologies, may I put you on hold for a sec?”

She spoke with a fake-friendly voice as she shot her a side-eye. Letting out a sigh, she let down the phone and turned her head over with an exaggerated swing. Shannon clenched her fists, despite the seething sensations in her heart, it was clear that this person regarded her as no more than a nuisance.
