Hollywood’s Favorite Sons (of Mystro)

         Brother’s Malcolm and Umoja McNeish were born, raised and educated in Hollywood (Malcolm 1992/Umoja 1996). Father, Handel was born in Jamaica, while mother Jacqueline was born in Barbados. The Hip Hamlet of Hollywood, however, is where they reared and raised their brood!

         Malcolm and Umoja have something in common beyond the filial connection—they both are violin virtuosos, and their act, Sons of Mystro is picking up steam!

         With moms prompting, Malcolm led the way as a student at Bethune Elementary School

         “I was into music, drama and the arts—totally immersed and I credit my mother for the nudge”.  And while mom may have provided the initial stimulus, it was music instructor Mrs. Treer who had the most profound impact on the fledgling fiddler.

         “I was playing flute in the Band at the time. And I recall my buddy and I gazing at a poster about Disney World. Mrs. Treer overheard us and told me that if I switched to violin I could join the Orchestra (which she taught) and that I could go on the annual, year-end trip to Disney World.” The soon-to-be 3rd Grader was all in!

         Malcolm’s gravitational groove pulled little brother Umoja straight in his orbit…

         “I saw my brother playing and thought, how cool would it be if we could actually play together!” Bow and resin quickly followed and the McNeish lads were on their way.

         The turning point in their development and the impetus for Sons of Mystro came when Malcolm was in 6th grade and Umoja in 3rd.  Ironically, the musicians who would kick-start their career were local players who attended both Parkway Middle School and Dillard High (where M and U also furthered their educations).

         “We had the opportunity to perform at the Dillard Center with other local orchestras from around Broward,” Umoja recalled.

          “After our performance we sat back in the audience section when all of a sudden, two guys came out playing hip-hop on violins!”

         Malcolm shook his head, “Never seen anything like it—had never been so inspired.”

         After the Black Violin performance, Umaja actually approached Kev Marcus (one of the players). “He told me to ‘practice, practice, practice,’”

          It wasn’t until a Parkway Middle School talent show that Handel actually realized just how gifted his children were. “I was forced to go,” Handel laughed. “I worked, all the time and frankly hadn’t followed closely the evolution of my kids. But that evening was an epiphany. I realized their immense talent and decided to do all I could to support and nurture their dream.”

          In a fabulous twist of fate, in 2012, the manager for Black Violin called. Apparently, they had been offered to play the iconic intro, AC/DC’s Back in Black, at a Miami Heat game. The problem was Black Violin was on tour—the Sons of Mystero were offered the gig—they brought the house down. As a result of that stellar show they were invited to perform at six more games!

          Their first CD (Sons of Mystro Reggae Strings) dropped in 2013 and they haven’t looked back, performing at the ESPN/BCS Championship party, Sunfest and Jazz in the Gardens (where they shared a stage with such notables as Earth, Wind and Fire, Kenny “Babyface” Edmonds and Najee—to name but a few).

These cross-genre geniuses have also performed at the Grace Jamaican Jerk Festival, Calle Ocho and Carnival on the Mile. Black Mystro was also named Emerging Artist of the Year at the International Reggae and World Music Awards.

A little birdie tells me the duo may start performing right here in the Hip Hamlet (perhaps AT3, Runas Tavern—can I get a 3rd Saturday Art Walk performance--please).
