After a decent chunk of time with UPS firmly placing themselves on my shit list, my Valentine's exchange has finally arrived safe and sound.
Howl's Moving Castle is one of my absolute favorite stories and it felt so perfect for this exchange.
I was so fortunate to get permission for the prettiest artwork to base the entire design around from @britishmuffin Thank you so so much!
I had a blast drawing the flowers for the background vinyl design and just making this the most floral design ever. 🤣
Materials:
Bookcloth - Japanese bookcloth celery (hollanders)
Gold vinyl - vinyl frog
Charm - Amazon
End pages - recollections

Fic - 9 ½ Days by the incredible @magpiefngrl !!
I said I might start posting some of the fic binds I’ve done and what better to start with than my all time favorite drarry fic! I’ve read this fic so many times that it feels like coming home, it’s my go to re-read. I love reading when i’m travelling the most, I can just lose myself in this fic so easily,, everyday i’m so grateful that this fic was finished.
I wanted the cover to look a bit like a map that the boys had doodled on despite this never happening in the fic I can just see it so clearly. I wanted it to be full of the references and nods to the story that were stuck in my head. my favorite part of this bind is by far the dried flowers on the final page,, I have no idea why but Draco making the bouquets at the cottage kept rattling around in my brain so i just,, made some in the back. The flowers are not at all accurate with what’s in the story but I was working with what I had

I did it! It's done, my very first fanbinding :D
Thee illustrious @tethysresort allowed me to bind their fic Paper Lanterns which is a lovely Glorfindel/Erestor fic and I adore it and was overcome with the desire to hold it in my hands, and here it is! At long last!

I am extremely please with how this book came out, it fits well in my hand, is a lovely weight, and the cereal box I used for the overs isn't nearly as floppy as I feared it would be. I was planning to use blue floss for the stitching (because blue is lovely) but I am so glad I looked around until I round a red that almost perfectly matches the red on the cover ahhhh I am just so pleased!
I started this back in January but the type setting and printing was just so awful and convoluted that I gave up for months, until April when I able to finally format my pages properly thanks to my dad (below the cut you can see all my printing attempts vs how the final fic, it's ridiculous). And then I only started making the covers a few days ago so it really just came together all at once.

With my leftover floss I made a little loop which can be twisted around the corners of the book to keep it closed, which is a great use for the leftovers that I otherwise would have thrown away.
All in all I am sooo happy with this binding! There were a lot of bumps on the way, but I'll just have to make sure to take what I've learned here and apply it to my next project!

trying to get my signatures to print in the right order was hell

Its finally done!!!

After getting back into BBC's Merlin recently (read: a couple months ago) I realized I no longer trusted streaming services to still have it available long term and managed to buy a complete DVD box set.
But because the slip case had quite a bit of wear to it (and due to some minor scopophobia) I made it a box that looks like a book!
(More rambling info & video under cut)
Materials:
The base construction is cardboard and paper (used to cover the exposed cut edges and strengthen corners). The box's faux paper edge is a printed texture on cardstock that was then waxed. The interior is black cardstock with silver vinyl. The 'book case' is that same cardboard construction with faux raised bands (made with some scrap foam I had) wrapped in Cialux's night blue bookcloth (hence the minor wrinkles) with Cricut HTV in metallic gold and 'reflective rainbow'.
Design:
Cover: Obviously Pendragon logo had to go front and center, no argument on that one. (Also partially cause Merlin doesn't really have his own symbol to him? The triskelion just doesn't make sense to me because although Emyrs is a symbol for the druids, Merlin himself isn't a druid and I'd imagine would instead choose icons of Camelot and Arthur to represent himself besides.) ANYWAY- Behind the crest, filligree containing a blade and the sidhe staff in that subtle reflective HTV that blends into the bookcloth exactly how I wanted until it catches the light (something something, hidden magic in the background something something).

(Appologies for the unsteady hands)
Spine: Mortaeus flower! Because it really felt like a turning point for the two (you've known each other... what a week? and you're going against your father to travel to some far off cave to get a flower?? that's some good as dnd-adventuring-party type shit I love it). Minor detail are the top and bottom shapes: pulled from some cool windows we see a lot in season one (I just think there' neat, okay?)
Back Cover: Excalibur with two butterflies cut from the blue-toned area of the rainbow HTV :)
And finally the Inside!: The cup of life! Because it felt just a little empty. I'm still tempted to put something small on the bottom left corner of the inside cover... maybe a crown? not sure yet
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
And that's everything! Thanks for reading! If anyone wants to make something similar for their own dvd set I'd be happy to share the .svg or .png file of the cut outs, just shoot me a message 👍 Before you go, wanna know the worst part about this project???
.
.
It doesn't even fit on my DVDs shelf :)))) It sticks out by about an inch and a half 😭So we maaay have to be relegated to the 'actual books' bookshelf...

So my baby's sisters absolute favourite book is Flowers For Algernon and I'm pretty okay at binding books so for Xmas I'm giving her a cool rebound version.
But here's the thing. It's a journal, right? And she loves when shit feels real you know like when books set in the 1800s have yellowed pages and those rough edges and shit. So I got it into my head that I'm going to actually write it out by hand, with the handwriting style reflecting the mastery of language that changes throughout the story (i.e. blocky and rudimentary at first, evolving into quicker possibly cursive as he learns, then blocky again but shaky at the end). I'm doing the short version bc I love my sister but not enough to handwrite 200 pages in different fonts.
So anyways this is a Project so anyone who sees this do me a favor and yell at me to work on it so it actually gets done this year lol.

Refulgent Summer Blooms
August has slipped into September, but these are always blooming. Enjoy these shining bright flowers of the Dutch gilt paper end papers in an 18th century work by Christian mystic, Jakob Böhme. (For more on the contents of the book, see this recent post.)

there’s something so palpable about the loneliness shared by niki and tallulah. phil knowing they would get along, them both standing off to the side during the phil tubbo and etoiles banter moment, tallulah checking in with niki and making sure she was good, giving her sentimental poppies and pink dye and a patch for her backpack, niki telling her she never has to feel lonely ever again. tallulah being the last thing niki saw before she logged out and niki promising solely tallulah that she would return. well aware that they have just met but they know each other’s solitude very personally. they have a very parallel loneliness and it brings them together and keeps them apart and is parallel in the plainest of definitions and senses
