I live in Australia, specifically in NSW, on the coast. And, as I’m sure some of you know, we’re being impacted pretty heavily by bushfires. Which to many of you won’t sound strange, bushfires hit Australia every year, and they’re part of our environment. And this is the mindset shared by many government officials currently, which is a problem as we’ve currently lost over 12 million acres, and that number is increasing every moment.

My town is either covered in smoke when you wake up in the morning or it’s shrouded by the evening

People are heasitent to letting their kids play outside because of this smoke, in Sydney, the air is so bad it’s the equivalent to smoking 37 cigarettes a day

The local economy has taken a hit, less and less people have come down for the summer, and local stores are really starting to struggle

I haven’t seen a single star in the sky in months. We live in a countryside, coastal town. The sky is usually crystal clear

Streetlights are commonly on by 4pm, as are car headlights. On the best days the sky is gray or white, on the bad ones the sun is bright red and the sky is dark brown.

Highways everywhere are closed, people can’t get back to their homes from holidays

I’m looking after a friend’s cat at the moment, they were supposed to be back tomorrow, but now they’re in an evacuation camp with no power or phone signal, no way of getting home and no idea when they’ll be back

Less and less people are going out of an evening, the town is quiet, and a sort of depression has fallen state-wide, if not nationally.

30% of the nation’s koala population is dead. We’ve lost over 500 million animals, and the numbers are climbing.

700 homes are gone, 17 people killed and more missing

The volunteer fire fighters don’t even have proper oxygen masks.

We’re showering in buckets so we can collect the water to give our garden, we’ve been in drought for months.

I have friends who have had bags packed for weeks, in case the fires reach them. We’ve started packing now too

Masks are not uncommon, even here in the country

Most days the horizon is invisible

Some firefighters are fluling fire trucks with the money out of their pockets because budgets have been slashed so many times

The national news radio station, ABC News, has become a 24/7 emergency broadcast channel, with constant instruction on what to do in emergency, and updating lists of where fires are spreading.

And I am living in one of the best off areas in my state. I cannot begin to imagine what some people are going through right now.

I know that, many people across the world experience many of those things above, and much much worse, but the scary thing is, we are a rich and well off nation. This is not normal. And the Prime Minister is still turning his head the other way, refusing compensation for the volunteer fire fighters, and saying that climate change has nothing to do with this problem.

And no one outside Australia is talking about this.

I say we speak up. Share/repost/reblog/retweet posts you see on any platform about the fires, follow tags, topics, articles, research what is happening and what you can do to help, consider donating to the RFS , to Koala Shelters, even the Salvation Army or the Red Cross. Here is info on how to donate. And if you can’t do that? Talk to your Aussie Mutuals, ask them their situations, see how they’re going. Give them some support. Tell your friends, your family about it, do a class research project, anything, just spread the word. Get people talking.
