SECRET SIBLING: EPISODES 1 & 2

Those involved in Secret Sibling this month may earn up to 8 points total for writing, by the end of September 10 KST:

Completions of the two interviews included in the in-character prompt. (1 point each, up to 2 points total)

One solo para of 400+ words based on filming for episodes 1 & 2. (2 points).

EITHER two threads of six posts (three per participant, including the starter) OR one thread of ten posts (five per participant, including the starter) with their assigned Secret Sibling taking place during their first filming. (2 each, for up to 4 points total OR 4 points)

(admin note: The date of the first day of filming should have been checked to work around all muses’ schedules with the consideration idols do not attend music shows on Mondays and some schedules may happen on the morning of the day they meet, but if you notice any problems, please send in a message and the date will be fixed!)

Before the first meeting, each pair member will be driven to the filming location by a manager and told whether they are the younger or older “sibling” of their pair, but not the identity of their partner. They will then be asked the following interview questions by their manager and are expected to answer them as if having a casual conversation with their manager. There will be three cameras stationed in the car for different angles of the interview “conversation”.

What are the traits you think you should show as a good younger/older sibling?

What kind of personality would you like your older/younger sibling to have and why?

What might surprise your sibling about you if they only know you as a celebrity?

The idol member will then have their partner’s identity revealed by their manager by playing the message from their audition as linked above (if their partner didn’t say their name, their manager will tell them who it is).

What do you think about your partner now that their identity has been revealed? From what you know of them, what are they like / what do you think they are like?

Following the conclusion of the in-car interview, they will be taken to the location of their first meeting: an apartment rented out by production and set up with mounted cameras where they’ll be spending twenty-four hours together to get to know each other. They’ll be aware that this is the setting and concept for the first day of filming beforehand.

The older “sibling” will arrive first and will be given time by themselves to get to know the apartment, which will include everything the pair might need, like food in the fridge, a video camera and Polaroid camera, board/card games, and pair-specific props like a guitar, a karaoke machine, cooking essentials, video games, etc. based on public knowledge of the interests of each member of the pair. Each idol will also be allowed to bring a single bag of their own full of anything they may need overnight like pajamas, toothbrush, snacks, bonding activities, etc.

The younger “sibling” will arrive after the older “sibling” has had about thirty to forty-five minutes in the apartment on their own.

In addition to everything else in the apartment, each pair will also have also have a “secret notebook” which will include questions and tasks for the pair to get to know each other including the following:

Have three meals meeting the following requirements:

Leave the apartment for one meal mutually agreed upon by both siblings.

For another meal, cook together using what’s supplied in the kitchen.

For another meal, order take out agreed upon by both siblings to be delivered to the apartment.

Take Polaroid photos together as proof of this memory.

Teach each other the point dances of one of your songs.

Use the projector set up in the living room to watch a reel of moments (stages, variety appearances, etc.) from each of your careers prepared by production and discuss your experiences as an idol.

Share your concerns with each other.

A note is included in the notebook including these missions and telling them they should work to achieve every mission by the time they part at the end of the twenty-four hours.

Outside of these missions, the “sibling” pairs will largely have free reign over what they discuss and what they do within the apartment with their twenty-four hours together, although everything should remain family-friendly and image-conscious and idols should not be too candid about any frustrations with their company, their group members, or their fans.

When/if the pair sleep, they’ll sleep in the same large bed like real siblings might do in their childhood.

At the conclusion of their first day together, they’ll do separate talking head interviews before leaving:

What was the most memorable part of the twenty-four hours you spent with your sibling?

Do you feel that you opened up to your sibling or is there still a barrier between you two?

What would you like to do with your sibling next time you meet?

The final number of submissions was twenty with even numbers of muses by gender, so all muses submitted were cast in the show, although the casting process would have been selective in-character. Pairing was semi-random as complete randomization was not possible while still keeping pairs realistic and making sure muns weren’t paired up more than once across multiple muse submissions!

in and out, it was suppose to be a quick in and out. it almost felt like it was too soon for her parents to even think about coming to the company. but here they were, ready to ruin her life and this was just her debut. in fact, they were in the middle of debut promotions which bugged her even more. oh, so much more. she wished, hopped, that the company would've said no. but they said yes, here she was. in a meeting room having a lunch she didn't want, with the door slightly cracked. ( mainly due to her parents knowing she wouldn't lose her temper in at her company of all places. )

"so, we should talk to your manager..." rina couldn't help the groan that left her mouth. her father shot her a look, letting her mother continue on. "has the company thought about...plastic surgery." and if she could disappear, she would've. funny enough, the company had asked her about this. before she could even respond, her dad interjected. "i was thinking the same..the other member's in your group are very pretty." and they weren't shopping for a husband like parents thought. "shouldn't we just end the tour? i have training and other things.." and it was almost like she shouldn't have said anything because they railroaded over without a second thought.

she was well aware of how other trainees perceived her, but she didn’t really care. if eunhee were being completely honest with herself, there was only one trainee whose opinion she cared about and that was heesung. eunhee rarely did the whole “crush” thing, especially because she was so focused on her own career and making a name for herself after she debuted as an idol, but she couldn’t deny the fact that heesung was very much so her ideal type in a lot of ways. he was tall and handsome, and he wasn’t a bad person to talk to. it was almost too easy to develop a little crush on him. romantic relationships between trainees were forbidden, but eunhee was always one to bend or even break the rules to push them in her favor, so she didn’t really care. that was why she didn’t stop with her advances. “oppa,” she greeted kindly when she entered one of bc’s practice rooms, already knowing that he was going to be there. she closed the door behind her, leaning against it with a smile. “getting a little late night practice in?”

      to put it simply, duri’s nervous. it was his first day of training and he was now staying in trainee dorms, away from the things that he knew - the things that he was comfortable in, to say the least. however, he was excited about starting the new journey, the journey to his dreams that he had put off for so long and once he had finished his mandatory military service, he had finally decided it was time. one audition for bc entertainment; he had secured him spot with excitement of being in the same company as decipher and bee; it was a dream come true, wasn’t it? he could only hope that he can actually debut; but, he wasn’t entirely sure when that would be. there was rumors of a new boy group, but he was pretty sure he’d be looked over for that - he wouldn’t be training for too long.

eyes looking around, he walks down one of the many hallways of the building. they had a break for it was time for another training session; so, he was moving around, finding where other people would be. he wanted to talk to others; something he’s really good at. but, he was simply too nervous, especially with the fact that it’s clear he’s one of the older trainees in age - simply, a lot of them seemed like kids or teenagers, so he wasn’t entirely sure what to do. for a while, he’d simply stand back and watch. though, his eyes would come upon someone who looked a bit similar, his face lighting up a bit more. truly, they seemed to look like heesung and he had wondered if he was still a bc entertainment trainee; as it had been a while since he last saw the other.

Going on variety shows was one of the many tasks that Youngmi found to be rather tedious. All of the questions were always the same; Who is in your inspiration in the industry? Who do you want to collaborate with? What’s your diet and exercise regime? And perhaps her least favorite of them all; Who’s your ideal type? It was a question she avoided as much as possible for two reasons. One being that it was no one’s business who she found attractive and what happened within the privacy of her love life. And two being that she didn’t want to run the risk of being romantically connected, or worse, shipped with a male idol. She knew that fans could be ruthless when it came to their idols being romantically involved with someone, especially if they were male idols. But alas, it wasn’t like she had much of a choice when it came down to it. 

She felt like all eyes were on her - probably because they were. “Um..” The question had been posed yet again, and this time the hosts just weren’t letting up. Pestering and badgering her until she finally gave them something. “This is a little embarrassing..” She murmured, her face turning red from humiliation, although she was sure the other people on the set would chalk it up to her being shy. “I’ve actually always admired Heesung sunbaenim.” Her eyes shifted to the male idol who was also guesting on the show for that episode. “Knight’s one of my favorite boy groups, and I’ve admired him since debut.”

What kinds of places do you want to visit in the city/county you’ve been assigned?

“gyeongju?” his eyebrows raise a bit, fingers tapping against the chair he’s sitting in. and he thinks to the last time he’s stepped away from city life. “i guess i would like to see the more traditional stuff. inside seoul, you only really get gwanghwamun or insadong. the traditional stuff of jongno. but we rarely get to get a taste of the country side traditional life, and i thiink that’s the charm of what gyeongju has to offer. i’m always enjoying a change of pace from seoul — seoul gets tiring after a while, right?”

Are you the type of person who prefers day trips around a city, or is a night in like last filming more comfortable for you?

”i like the freedom of having time. when things are rushed, you often don’t focus on the details. i’m a detail oriented person, a perfectionist in everything i do. i like scheduling out piece by piece of my day, and really taking the time to bask in what the time slot has to offer.” taejin tilts his head, and eyes the staff in the room — letting his answer sink in lieu of a crafted smile. “so when you have two days and one night, you’re left with a lot more freedom and time. no rushing, because when you’re busy, you rarely get the time to have the luxury to come to places outside of seoul.”

If you could go anywhere in the world outside of Korea with your sibling, where would you want to go?

“i think i’d pick hong kong? maybe even macau — i was watching a piece of tv the other day, and they were showing off the food cities of the world. i wouldn’t want to go anywhere far, considering both heesung and i have extremely busy schedules. we’re aged, and i’m not sure our bodies could handle flights that take more than ten hours.” the words get caught inside the flit of chuckles that taejin adds for good mark, extending his chin to mask it all in a grin. “so, somewhere not so far with a lot of exciting things to see. the city life might be fun, fast paced for us to explore for a few days.”

Did you learn anything new about your sibling today? If so, what did you learn? If not, what would you like to learn about them?

“i’ve learned that heesung’s more than what he portrays on the screen. on the screen, he’s knight’s leader — the tall one that stands strong for his members, and always goes with the best attitude in mind. it’s the positivity that i’ve learned doesn’t waver in front of the cameras. in my opinion, it’s an admirable trait to have — one that very few possess now a days. i’d like to learn more about what heesung feels when he’s not subjected to a camera or a leader position. the human that’s not heesung the idol.”

What was the most memorable part of the day you spent with your sibling?

“i think the most memorable part might have been the amusement park? i don’t know how many thirty one year olds you’ve seen that has had the time of their lives at an amusement park, lest one that’s not in seoul. but it was the first time i’ve been to this amusement park, and the first one in a while — i’d say near years since i’ve let go and enjoyed myself like a child again. i think the most memorable part is that we were able to be kids again, and not have these expectations placed on us for once.”

Is there anything you didn’t get to do that you might want to come back and do with your sibling off-camera some time? Was there anything you did do that you’d want to come back and visit/do again some other time?

“gyeongju has a lot to offer — a lot of charming points about it. i see why some people choose to move here in their later years, and i feel as if we haven’t truly explored all of it. just the tourist destinations that a lot of people see — i think it’d be interesting to come back and enjoy a few days like a local. eat the hidden restaurants of local ajusshis and ajummas. — walk around, ride bikes. really step away from the city life that both me and heesung have been living in for quite some time now.” 

You’ll need to buy your sibling a gift before the next time you meet at the full cast dinner. What do you think you’ll get them?

“perhaps a wallet? but i’m sure he has a nice one already. i don’t think i’d purchase something expensive because it’s not something he can’t buy himself. although, a nice bottle of expensive wine might be nice, especially one with his birth year? if not — a nice instrument? a grand piano i hear make good presents this time of the year.”

Alex is not the type of guy who would go as far as lending someone an ear for them to talk about the problems without having an ulterior motive for that. He was taught from an early age that if someone wanted him to give them some of his time, there should be a way for them to pay him back. He obviously got better, he’s not as selfish anymore. Maybe a little but not as much. He was actually surprised when none other than Heesung appeared on his radar though and even more surprised that after a while he ended up suggesting to teach the Knight member a different instrument, instead of the basic guitar and piano everyone learns. 

He wasn’t really surprised that BC had drums in one of their practice rooms. They used to be the best company a couple of years before and any other company wins against Dimensions anyway. To be honest, it has been a while since the last time he played the drums. Because of schedules and because it was easier to compose and write songs with other instruments other than the drums. It’s familiar when he starts hitting the drums and cymbals, it’s almost as if he never stopped practicing at all. 

He stops when he notices the door opening and promptly stands up to greet Heesung into the room, “Heesung-ssi! I’m glad you managed to come. I was just warming up, has been a while since the last time I played, but should we start?”

heesung chuckled shaking his head as he extended his hand to his fallen twin. “yea, i don’t think its going anywhere hui.” heesung chuckled pulling her up from the floor. everyone knew that more than likely heesung would end up spending most of his time hanging out with his sister than anyone else. it wasn’t entirely that he didn’t like many people. he just wasn’t in the mood to deal with people since he hurt his arm. taking a deep breath he looked around at all the people who were there and then back at his sister. “nice outfit. who are you suppose to be?”

a smile spreads across her face as she catches her brothers gaze. almost as if her mind knew who was standing behind her. “you can never be too sure.” she says taking his hand and standing up hoping no one else saw her fall. she was relieved heesung was the one who came and helped her up. although in a way it wasn’t a surprise. they would probably spend most of the night together, although she wouldn’t reject anyone who wanted her to join them in an activity set up around the venue. “runaway princess. would have been a knight but it’s hard to do with a “black tie” event. and what are you?”

Before filming begins this month, the cast members are informed that the show has teamed up with the Korea Tourism Organization to sponsor the next two episodes of the show and each pair will be going to a city in one of the nine provinces of South Korea to spend a day on a “family trip” with an itinery completely created by the pair themselves. They are given at least a few days to research their assigned city if needed to find places they might want to visit before they are expected to make their itinerary. Each pair is assigned one tourist spot in or near their assigned city/county that they must visit during their day trip to fulfill the sponsorship with the Korea Tourism Organization, but the rest of the day’s activities will be completely decided and agreed on by the pair themselves during a day of filming taking place before their trip (admin note: the exact date can be decided based on muse schedules) where they will meet in a room at the company building of the younger of the pair. They will be given an hour or two to film themselves planning out and agreeing on an itinerary together. They’re free to do as they please with the obvious limitations of all activities needing to be family friendly, image appropriate, within a reasonable budget, and reasonably able to be filmed. If they’d like to take a food tour of the city, they may do so. If they want to spend all day in the city’s animal shelters except for when they must visit their required location, they’re also welcome to do that. (admin note: A list of possible hot tourist spots in each city/county is linked above to help start out research into specific locations, but muses are also welcome to visit general locations that can be found in most every city like restaurants, shopping, movie theaters, etc. if that’s what they jointly prefer!) On September 29, all nine pairs will come together for a joint day of filming at a large apartment rented out by management where they will have an early pre-Chuseok gathering. Anyone who has other group mates on the show is encouraged to introduce their group mates to their sibling, and, in general, everyone is encouraged to socialize and come together for what will be used as a heartwarming ending scene to the fourth episode. At the end of the dinner, the sibling pairs will exchange gifts with each other.

After their trip around Korea last month, the pairs are informed shortly after their Chuseok filming that they’ll be going on either a two day-one night trip or a one day-two night trip out of the country with their partner for the first part of filming for the final two episodes. At the time, they’re told the city and the dates they’re scheduled to travel.

The aim for this trip is to show how the pair have grown more comfortable together, from a full day in together to a small trip outside of the city to an out-of-country trip. Each member of the pair will be asked to write a letter to the other that they’ll exchange in the final hours of their trip.

Have you ever been to the city you’ll be visiting with your sibling before? If so, what do you remember it being like? If not, what do you expect it to be like?

You’ve been tasked with writing a letter to your sibling. Do you know what you want to say to them in it yet?

Each pair will have relative freedom as to where they go and what they do during their short trip (as long as all activities are family friendly, image appropriate, within a reasonable budget, and reasonably able to be filmed) and a small crew will be sent with them to their location. They’ll stay in a hotel room together (with two beds) at their location for either one night or two nights depending on their assigned trip type. For two day, one night trips, pairs will arrive on the morning of the first date and depart in the evening of the second date. For one day, two night trips, pairs will arrive in the evening or night of the first date and leave early in the morning of the third date. The show will pay for necessities like transportation and food during the trip, but any souvenirs and the like will have to be bought with the cast member’s own money. Each cast member will be given a self-cam during this trip in addition to the camera crew that will go with them. 

After all pairs have returned from their trip, the second part of the episodes will be filmed on November 9 at a large house outside of Seoul that has been rented out for the day for filming. This will be the final filming of this season of the show and it will another meeting of all of the siblings where everyone will show off the bond they’ve formed over the course of the show by competing in games against each other. These will consist of physical games like wheelbarrow races and pair volleyball as well as less physical games like charades and paired video games. Not all pairs will participate in all games, but all pairs must participate in a full-group sibling version of The Newlywed Game where the pairs are asked a question about one "sibling” and the other sibling must give the same answer their sibling gave to see how well they’ve come to know each other. 

At the conclusion of their final day of filming, each member of the sibling pair will do their final talking head interviews:

rina has happy the dance rooms had the mirrors. ( or not so happy. ) even though right now, she could only see herself making a fool of herself. a huge one. "alright..so..i wanted to know if you'd like.." that sounded wrong, so wrong. maybe, it would just be better to not do it. that option seemed like the most appealing. if she never said anything, it'd never be a problem. ( when did she become such a coward? no need to answer. she always was. ) then she started to pace, walking around the room and muttering to herself like she was a crazy person. torn between doing it and not doing it. if only there was a way she could ask and then went it wrong, she could just toss the memory away like in their signal music video.

so she found herself pacing towards the door. "sunbae...oppa...sunbae-nim." then it seemed too stupid too be that formal for what she was asking. ( now she was just seconds from the door. a choice had to be made quickly. ) "heesung..would you like too...me..possibly..go." yeah, no. as she opened the door, her choice was made. she wouldn't do it. only to run into the person she had just chosen to avoid. "heesung! sunbae! i mean, hello sunbae." as quick as she was scared, she tried to focus herself. going into a bow because that was the respectful thing to do. "sorry, i didn't mean to open the door in your path."

    duri was rather excited for the pre-chuseok meeting dinner that the whole cast of secret sibling was having. it was really just an excuse for duri to talk to more people, something that he couldn’t help but to enjoy, to say the least. plus, a lot the members of knight were apart of knight, which was just another reason to be excited; even if he had just recently seen them, especially for practices due to their upcoming knight comeback. his eyes looked around the room full of pairs, before he spots heesung. of course, duri, being duri, comes happily up to him. “heesungie!” he said, giggling softly. “are you having fun?”

what he knows of gyeongju is little to nothing — a visit once or twice as a young child, but never on his own will. it becomes a right of passage, he supposes, getting a mixture of modernization and traditionalism all in one. it’s a contrast. a stark difference that separates him from the comfort of seoul, and it leaves him displaced. lost inside the unfamiliarity of it all — and somehow, he goes along with it all only to land dead-middle inside an amusement park. luckily, it comes with downtime and the cameras placed down gives him seconds to breathe in and out, collect himself before he steps in front of the action cards and cues once more. “i can’t believe i’m here at an amusement park at the age of thirty.” a chuckle bursts over, and he stands with a mouth slightly agape. “let alone have someone film us running through an amusement park — we’re easily the oldest people here.” and he blames the cameras and the timing of school to minimize the traffic inside to nearly none. a line-free zone, leaving them to indulge like schoolchildren once again.

it feels different to step into the role of himself — it becomes the most difficult role he’s stepped forth to pretending to be himself inside a world where they just want a picturesque boyfriend. and that’s what becomes of the name ‘kim taejin’ — the perfect image of formalities and manners, politeness that keeps infatuation pooled in the viewers’ eyes. because to the public, he’s perfect — does no wrong. the leader of twelve years that remains steadfast and unhindered by the pressures thrown around the world around him.

except, they’re wrong. taejin’s no prince charming nor is he the be-all, give-all leader he can be. there’s differences, a strong clash of images that bc exacerbates to make him a more profitable deal on camera — he gets the gist by now.

and he doesn’t put up a fight because — the cost isn’t as effective as the outcome he knows to have no control over. instead, he goes with the flow allowing the motions without thought to carry him through the day. lucky for him, heesung’s easy going. kind, has a lightness surrounding him that makes the filming bearable, or at least manageable through the shoot. and taejin imagines heesung to not be so bad, finding the common string of leadership to tie up the distance between the two. 

maybe, he’s self reflecting — learning once more what’s right and wrong. or maybe, he’s just polishing up the frayed edges of something he hasn’t perfect yet. people skills, the art of mingling in small talk and keeping up when time separates. taejin thinks that this is a start, and maybe here he can begin opening a warmer shoulder as opposed to a cold blind eye.

he imagines heesung to be nice, just as much as tired as taejin feels after shooting. reality, variety. two things, he’s never found a calling for. because deep down he fears the cuts and edits, copies and paste that have the potential of titling him to ‘villain’. one move, and his image he’s crafted for the twelve years shatters. 

but he puts aside those thoughts because after it all — he’s tired. drained. the world around him and the voice of his manager muffled as he leans back in the van meant to take him home. he wants to fall back to the ease and comfort of stepping away because the most laborious role given is the one where it writes his essence for him.
