Urban art exhibition planned in Weymouth to celebrate 'Banksy boom' | Dorset Echo
The showcase, called 'GREED', will be on display at 11 St. Nicholas Street from Friday, April 7 until Monday, April 10.
The exhibition will comprise of subversive and urban art created by more than 70 renowned artists on a 14 metre wall.
'GREED' is being organised by a newly-formed art collective based in Weymouth, whose aim is to create a grassroots art scene whilst shining a spotlight on local and international artists.
It will feature paintings, photography, film, brandalism, sculptures, performances and public live art, with orgamisers wanting to celebrate 'revolutionary and alternative' culture.
The four-day event will also see performances from bands, poets and musicians along with a series of talks, workshops, activities and film screenings.
All of work on display acts as social commentary and marks what is known as the ‘Banksy boom’ which has spawned a wealth of artists and activists who want to respond to a wide range of subjects, from the cost-of-living crisis to gender politics.
Included in the exhibition are world renowned artists Spelling Mistakes Cost Lives, Foka Wolf, Subvertiser, My Dog Sighs, Wefail, Frank Riot, Haus Of Lucy, Hats Richardson and Guy Denning along with local artists Bod and Sock Oven and street photographers, Paul Russell and Si Jubb.
Artist BOD, who will be displaying work at the exhibtion and is one of the organisers of the event, said: "Since moving to Weymouth four years ago, I've been completely overwhelmed by the vacuum of culture here.
"There's a couple of galleries with 'safe' art but the more interesting art around here has been hidden away on social media mostly.
"So I decided to pull together a large group of artists for four days in Easter as a kind of 'exposure therapy' for this dormancy in the hope of inspiring others to do more challenging art in the area.”
Andy Smith, an artist and activist who is involved in the Weymouth project, added:  "Art has always acted as a mirror to the world; as we continue our descent into apocalyptic consumer capitalism and political greed we’re going to see more and more artists reflecting the social struggles we’re all increasingly facing on a day to day basis."

Ikon Gallery Trip/Foka Wolf Exhibition
During week 4 of Make Art Be Happy, we visited the Ikon gallery, although we only went to look at a specific exhibition, there were a fair amount of other exhibitions there that I found quite interesting.
I took pictures of some of them to document them and possibly use them for research.
The main thing we went to see was the Fokawolf exhibition, for me it didn’t interest me as much as some of the other featured exhibitions. The reason being, I’ve followed Fokawolf’s instagram page for a while now, and based off of visuals, i prefer his other works that he has posted, whereas the exhibition piece didn’t visually captivate me, although it did carry a sad message that really made you think.
Below I'm going to show off some of the other featured exhibitions, along with the Fokawolf one.

Here is the Fokawolf piece. In my opinion, a lot more could have been done with the space he had. I found it quite interesting that when the lights were turned off the piece differed from what it was when the lights were on. However i didn't like the sort of slime looking text that it had. I felt it wasn't a relevant choice of typography to the words that it had. "I'm so far away from my mum" is an extremely powerful sentence, however the text takes away from that all too much in my personal opinion.

This piece I found quite interesting while visiting the ikon gallery. At first when I entered the room, it was just a bunch of metal boards that seemingly represented cheese slices, which I found quite odd. However, after being told to turn the flash on my phone on, these boards lit up and the space around the room became enveloped in darkness. I'm not sure what the message of this piece was as there wasn't much information on it that I could find, but I found it to be quite interesting nonetheless.

This piece really caught my attention, which I think is quite funny thinking about all of the bigger pieces surrounding it that were much more vibrant, whereas this piece was just a line of small framed pictures that went around the room featuring powerful poetry about real struggle. I also found it quite interesting that all of the images on these pictures are parts of different destroyed buildings that pushed the message they were trying to convey with the "horror in the modernist block" idea.

FOKA WOLF EXHIBITION:
Tumblr media Tumblr media
This was an exhibition at the Ikon gallery. I really liked how there was 2 totally different pieces of art in 1. When the lights are on it’s simple and you can’t tell that there’s anything else to it. However, when the lights are off everything changes the colours go from being red and black to glowing green and blue tint and the words change as well. I think this exhibition was displayed well and was thought through of how it would be executed.
I also find the reason behind the piece heart touching because it’s deep and it has meaning to it.

FOKA WOLF EXHIBITION
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
The Foka Wolf exhibition is a direct response to the project titled "Why Are We Stuck in Hospital?" initiated by the School of Social Policy and the University of Birmingham in collaboration with the rights-based organization Changing Our Lives. The aim of this research is to raise awareness about the approximately 2,000 individuals with learning disabilities and/or autism who are confined to long-term hospital settings. The exhibition serves as a platform to shed light on this issue and provoke meaningful discussions around the topic.
The exhibition effectively captures the sense of confinement and isolation experienced by individuals living in hospitals without a clear idea of when they will be able to leave. The limited space and surrounding walls immediately create a feeling of being trapped upon entering the room. The initial dark and intimidating colors contribute to the eerie atmosphere.
The maze-like pattern covering the walls on both sides symbolizes the mental state of those in these situations—confusion and a sense of being trapped, just like in a maze. The forward-facing wall displays statistics accompanied by the thought-provoking question, "Why are they stuck in hospital?" This impactful information demands the audience's attention and focuses their thoughts on this harsh reality.
As the lights turn off, a UV light reveals hidden writing on the front wall, resembling slimy text that reads, "I'm so far away from my mum." This revelation delivers a powerful blow to the audience. It not only showcases the confusion and fear experienced under these circumstances but also prompts us to reflect on the emotional pain endured by families who are separated from their loved ones. It emphasizes the anguish of being disconnected from those they hold dear due to circumstances beyond their control.
Overall, the exhibition masterfully conveys the feelings of confinement, isolation, and the emotional toll experienced by individuals living in hospitals, while also encouraging viewers to consider the impact on families affected by these situations.

We went to foka wolf’s exhibition at Attic Brew Co the other night. The prints were all super groovy and afterwards we headed to The Night Owl, where I saw this super cool bathroom ceiling!
