Fontella Bass, the singer whose 1965 hit “Rescue Me” was an indelible example of the decade’s finest pop-soul was born on this date July 3, 1940 in St. Louis, MO.

Bass was the daughter of gospel vocalist Martha Bass, a longtime member of the renowned Clara Ward Singers. Her grandmother Navada Carter was also a professional gospel performer, and it was inevitable that Fontella follow suit.

The weekend haul from the Vinyl Lounge in Essen and Bahlo Records in Bochum. Two for my 1967 collection: German edition of the Johnny Hodges album "Don't Sleep In The Subway" with different title/cover, recorded August 17, 18 & 21, 1967. And an original Japanese pressing of the Jazz Crusaders "Uh Huh", recorded May 15, 1967. The Knowbody Else album (Stax, 1969) was a great suprise. Sounds like Captain Beefheart jamming with Dr. John at Muscle Shoals! Later the band changed their name to Black Oak Arkansas and became more Southern Rock. Also good: the Scorpions debut on Brain Records. Their best album ;-) And you can't do wrong with Gabor Szabo, Art Ensemble Of Chicago (feat. Fontella Bass) and the amazing Joe Farrell on CTI Records with a lineup that is hard to beat! Going to be a nice Sunday afternoon in the sunny garden with some fine music.
