But part of my saving grace was the “gifted” classes.  I was very lucky that, despite not knowing about her own (probable) ADHD,  my mom knew enough about how she worked as a student to know that me (and my brother) really needed to be engaged and challenged in order to thrive.  Because of this, she advocated for us hard—she insisted we be allowed in my elementary school’s “gifted” program in kindergarten (based on our test scores of course)  even though the “gifted” program officially wasn’t even available until first grade.  And when we moved to a different state, she advocated for us again and got us included even though the “gifted” class was “full.”   She knew that nothing would make us fail faster than being bored in class, so she made sure that there was at least one day a week when we would be challenged and actually get to engage with material we found interesting.

I went into this book ready to love it. I was so excited to see the flip side of the conservative Christian monopoly on spirituality in politics. But I’ll be honest, I have really mixed feelings about this book. 

I’ll start with the good, since I do think that overall it’s a worthy and valuable addition to the published literature on contemporary magic. Hughes includes a great overview of magic as a tool of the oppressed throughout the book. The very beginning of the book consists of a survey of political movements, social uprisings, and protests that have been key aspects of witchcraft across cultures and throughout history. This is very much an overview, and doesn’t go into great depth or detail on any of them, but is an excellent jumping off point for readers to do their own research on any of the movements that are personally resonant. He also does a great job emphasizing the use of magic as something that can both bolster feelings of personal power -- especially in times where we may feel powerless -- and also to bring people together to enact change on both magical and mundane levels. In this way, the book is fantastic. Hughes uses his own example of the Spell to Bind Donald Trump which you may remember from the time right around or after the inauguration. I didn’t recognize Hughes’ name when I got this book, but I certainly remembered the spell that included a stubby orange candle and the Tower card! To be honest, though, I really think the major contribution that Hughes makes with this book is his advice on how to plan demonstrations, protests, and other political actions. His advice on humor, as stated above, is intermixed with logistic suggestions for meeting up with other activist witches and planning actions as well as ideas for guerrilla magic - such as leaving talismans of protection at women’s clinics, leaving Justice tarot cards with the names of unjustly convicted activists or victims of police violence on the courthouse steps, etc. He does include a section of pre-written spells and ritual ideas, but after the rest of the book they felt kind of superfluous to me. However, perhaps other readers will appreciate the templates he offers, and will be inspired to enact them or similar spells on their own. Even if his specific spells don’t resonate with me, though, I have not seen a Black Lives Matter spell before, or a Hex the NRA response to the ‘thoughts and prayers’ offered by politicians. They were powerful simply by virtue of existing in print, and for that I am grateful. 

Additionally, I particularly appreciated Hughes’ discussion of using magical means to intervene in individual actions via curses, hexes, or binding spells. His take is that if you are willing to take mundane action to reach the same result, then using magic is not unethical. That is, if you are willing to write a letter trying to get a politician to change their stance on an issue, why would you be averse to using magical means to do the same? If you are willing to get a restraining order to keep someone from stalking another person, why would you not also enact a binding spell - essentially a magical restraining order - to add some oomph to the process? He does not advocate cursing willy-nilly or binding someone when a conversation could do the trick, but he is pragmatic and views magic as just one more tool for us to keep in our tool box. 

If you’ve read my other book reviews, you can probably guess what my first critique is going to be. Cultural appropriation is a huge problem in magical and pagan communities across the country (and probably the world, but I’m most familiar with the U.S.), and this book is no different. I don’t know what kind of mentoring, training, or initiation Hughes may have undergone, and I certainly don’t want to position myself as any sort of gatekeeper, but I do know that this is a white man offering ideas on how to make mojo bags in the vein of Hoodoo and Conjure traditions (conjure, rootwork, etc, come up frequently in the book); he regularly references Qabbalistic magic (maybe he’s Jewish, but he definitely writes about it in a way that feels like he’s dabbling), and his rituals often use components of or reference traditions with little to no background on why you might use these methods, in what contexts they are or are not appropriate, etc. I was able to pull the useful pieces out of the book and gloss over the pieces that felt inappropriate, but for the most part I am not part of the groups that he is sampling from. If I were, I may have a harder time ignoring it or feeling like the rest of the book was worth it. Mostly, it felt somewhat hypocritical to uncritically sample from closed or initiatory traditions-- or even traditions that may not be closed but are associated with specific, historically oppressed populations-- in a book on social justice. 

My other critique is maybe a little picky, but while individual sections were well written, the flow of the book seemed odd at points. We switched back and forth from a history lesson to a discussion of magic that felt at least at the 201 level back to a 101 lesson on altar set up and how to cast a circle then a discussion of street activism. I appreciate that the book is geared toward a variety of experience levels and abilities, but it felt like perhaps it could have been organized better. Guidelines on altar set up, how to do basic magical actions like casting a circle, etc, could have been included in an appendix along with the individual spells. That may have contributed to a better flow overall, and left more space for a sustained discussion of the political implications of what magical tradition you choose to work with and why, or even just how to match your ritual to your action to your intended political outcome. 

In any case, I do think this book is worth reading, especially for those new to activism of any kind, magical or mundane. With that said, I am unlikely to buy it or keep it as a reference, since my favorite parts are the broad ideas rather than the specific spells that I might need to review before performing. Yes! One thing I would recommend is having a look at this Google document, which media professor Melissa Zimdars created as a database of digital news sources. It currently lists ~1000 different websites that provide or purport to provide information, and classifies them according to their credibility and bias. For instance, a website might be tagged “junk science” or "satire” or “extreme bias” or “proceed with caution.” (The definition of each of these tags is explained in the document.) 

Zimdars also provides both specific, practical tips that you can use to evaluate websites (for instance: ”Odd domain names generally equal odd and rarely truthful news”) and a set of general guidelines that you can use as a way of analyzing any source of information.

My own guidelines are pretty similar, and take the form of a list of questions that I encourage people to ask:

Is this article being published in/by a reputable publication? Major mainstream publications like The New York Times, The Guardian, The Atlantic, et cetera are considered reputable for reasons: they are well-established, have a lot invested in maintaining their credibility, and attract skilled and experienced journalists/researchers. This doesn’t mean that they are never wrong, but they are broadly reliable. If you don’t know anything about the publication, investigate it! What can you learn from the “About Us” page? (If there is not one, be skeptical.) Does the publication have a Wikipedia page? Coverage elsewhere? Etc.

What qualifies the author to write this article? Professional journalists and academics write about a range of topics, but will generally have an area in which they are particularly expert. Some journalists become especially proficient in understanding and explaining scientific stories, some in doing the same for political stories (often from a specific region of the world), and so on. The goal of this is for them to know the history/context of what they’re talking about. However, there are also other types of qualifications to consider: sometimes, people write articles because they have a personal experience or connection that is relevant to the topic, and which enables them to talk about it in a way that other people are not qualified to do. One example of this might be Jon Krakauer, who is an outdoors journalist (in part because he is himself an outdoors enthusiast), but who became extremely well-known for writing about a disastrous Mt. Everest expedition that he was actually a part of. Also, obviously, there are times when someone’s experience as a person of a particular race, sexual orientation, immigration status, ability, etc. is going to factor into their qualification to write an article. When was the article published? Pretty self-explanatory. This may or may not affect the reliability of its information, depending on what that information is.

What is the article’s bias? Sometimes it’s better to think about this question as: what are the unspoken beliefs of the author? Almost everything/everyone has a bias of some kind, and bias does not necessarily mean an article/author is not credible. However, it’s important to identify bias and understand how it’s affecting the article’s perspective on an issue. The infamous New York Times obituary of Mike Brown, which described him as “no angel,” is often cited as an example of bias. The author’s article was a black man who did not intend to communicate a particular agenda through those words, but important points were raised about what his choice of words (and details) revealed about his unspoken (and perhaps unexamined) beliefs. Sometimes an author’s background, record, or the reputation of the publication might clue you in to bias. Conor Friedersdorf, in the Atlantic, regularly writes about issues of academic freedom (trigger warnings, safe spaces, etc) and… let’s just say his views are very clear.

Can you verify the information? Look for other credible sources that back up what the article is saying, particularly if it seems surprising. This is a good strategy to use with Wikipedia, too: check the cited sources and make sure (1) they are credible, and (2) they are actually saying what the article claims they are saying.

Caprylhydroxamic acids are used in the treatment of fungal infections, such as toenail fungus, athlete's foot, and nail fungi. The acids have antimicrobial, antifungal, and anti-viral properties which make them useful against a range of fungal species. Caprylhydroxamic acids, also known as caprylhydroxamic acid, is a naturally occurring organic substance and an essential spectrum antifungal and antibacterial agent.

With increasing globalization and increasing trade between East and West, there has been a cross correlation of globalization and the use of caprylhydroxamic acid to treat fungal infection. In Europe and North America, there was a noticeable increase in caprylhydroxamic acid sales from 2021 through 2021 with the growth rate of almost 33%. While Europe and North America have traditionally had a low growth rate for fungal nail infections, it is believed that the rising trend in Asia and the Pacific countries may be related to the transportation of goods between these regions.

In this study, a research team conducted in the field examined two synthetic and two reference forms of caprylhydroxamic acid to determine their antimicrobial activity against a range of gram-positive bacteria. Using the global market as their source, the researchers isolated five types of acid from six different sources and performed quality assurance testing on these chemicals. The test subjects were six different species of fungus. The test showed that caprylhydroxamic acid from Europe and North America contained no antifungal activity against the six different species tested, but when the chemical was used on the fungi that were newly introduced into the global market, antifungal resistance was significantly increased in four of the six species.

The investigators then investigated the source of this resistance by isolating the fungus from four North American sources and compared it to the fungus from the Europe and Asia-pacific regions. From these comparisons, it was concluded that the source of antifungal resistance for these fungi was the caprylhydroxamic acid from Europe and the North America. This information raises concerns about the consequences of introducing foreign fungus into a North American environment. While the availability of caprylhydroxamic acid increases the likelihood of encountering this fungal infection in the United States, the extent of the risk associated with its use is unknown. From the data available, this chemical appears to play a role in fungal resistance in the Asia-Pacific region but its exact role in the global context is not known.

There are multiple concerns about the health hazards associated with this chemical. It has been determined that there is a possibility of serious skin irritation when used topically, as well as eyes and throat irritation. It has also been determined that there is a possibility of an allergic reaction to this gentle preservative when it is used as a food preservative. Allergies to caprylhydroxamic acid  market have been identified in both adults and children, and infants.

Currently, it is not known whether caprylhydroxamic acid inhibits the processes which are necessary for the synthesis of the peptidoglycan found in collagens and fibres. This is important, as there is significant clinical evidence linking low-level exposure to various environmental chemicals to premature aging and disease. A safe and inexpensive alternative to addressing these concerns would be to include the chemical as an ingredient in all of the common preservatives used in the cosmetic industry.

While caprylhydroxamic acid has been proven to be safe for use as an effective mild exfoliator, care should be taken in using it topically, especially to those with dry skin, because it can cause irritation when directly applied. For this reason, caprylhydroxamic acid should only be used as an ingredient in formulations intended for external application. This includes the commonly used moisturizers, facial creams, and cleansers. The safe use of caprylhydroxamic acid as a gentle, anti-inflammatory broad spectrum anti-inflammatory added accepted preservatives, such as petrolatum and mineral oil, is not currently known. This compound is also deemed "safe" for use in cosmetics by the European Union, the United States Food and Drug Administration, and the Cosmetic Ingredient Review Expert Panel.

However, despite its benefits, caprylhydroxamic acid has not been successful in clinical trials, and its long term effects are unknown. It is believed that its drying properties, when used topically, may contribute to the development of dermatitis or eczema. It also may contribute to the occurrence of blemishes or pimples, as well as redness, swelling, and cracking of the skin. Some people experience stinging or burning sensation when they come into contact with the substance. It has not been proven safe for babies or young children. Allergies to caprylhydroxamic acid and fragrances have not been reported.

Developing Command and Control for Unmanned Vessels

Norway is taking the helm to develop technology that will be used to send unmanned vessels to sea on assignments without a crew on board.

The researchers face some daunting challenges, such as determining what kind of control systems are needed to create safe traffic at sea for autonomous vessels and figuring out how a driverless ferry should be designed so that passengers will trust that it is safe to board.

An interdisciplinary research team at NTNU is now taking a deep dive into these work areas.

Laboratory by the sea

The research team, which works on design and control systems for driverless vehicles, is now building a completely new lab in the middle of a maritime environment, close to the sea where they can develop and test new technology exactly where it will be used. The lab’s new name is the NTNU Shore Control Centre.

Nyhavna in Trondheim is an area filled with old and new industrial companies. Next door to the Dora WWII submarine bunker is the Trondheim Maritime Centre,  where researchers, designers and technologists are in the process of building the technical infrastructure in the new lab.

Over 600 square meters of offices and meeting rooms are ready to receive students, fellows and researchers, but the coronavirus has put the move on hold. In the meantime, work is being done to furnish the very heart of the research environment: a technical research lab that will be more like a captain’s wheelhouse – but one that is located on land.

Human factor in the technology

“Autonomous transport is a technology that we’re developing for export,” says Ole Andreas Alsos, head of the Department of Design. He predicts that this industry is going to be big and  something we’ll live off in the future.

The work he leads is part of a newly started SFI – the Norwegian acronym for the Research Council of Norway’s Centre for Research-based Innovation programmes. These centres consist of many partners from universities and businesses, and are intended to enhance the strength and speed at which new disciplines and technology can be realized.

The goal of SFI AutoShip is to ensure that Norwegian players take a leading role in the development of autonomous ships, nationally and internationally. NTNU’s Department of Engineering Cybernetics heads SFI AutoShip under Professor Mary-Ann Lundteigen.

The Department of Design has been assigned to manage what is known as a “work package” in the SFI for the section that is defined as Human factors.

“We’ll ensure that the human factor has a place in this artificial intelligence and computer world,” says Alsos.

World’s first test area for driverless vessels

Turning the clock back four years, the Trondheim fjord was inaugurated as the world’s first test area for driverless vessels. This inspired Egil Eide, an associate professor in NTNU’s Department of Electronic Systems, and a team of students to build Norway’s first driverless ferry. It was named milliAmpère.

The milliAmpère ferry was designed and built to test how to carry passengers across the Channel in Trondheim, a distance of about 100 meters. In earlier times, a ferryman rowed passengers across the Channel. The milliAmpère team based its work on this old tradition when they developed a completely new type of vessel.

The milliAmpère is a pilot project that has been undergoing testing for the past three years. It is 5 meters long and 2.8 meters wide – so not very big.

Eide has been collaborating with students and PhD candidates.  He is using his experiences from milliAmpère 1 and is now in the process of building milliAmpère 2, which will soon be completed. It is twice as long and twice as wide as its predecessor, contains far more technical equipment and has a distinctly different design.

The actual hull of aluminium was made at a shipyard on the island of Frøya, and now Eide is installing the technical equipment with the help of fitters and PhD candidates. About 20 master’s students and three to four PhD candidates have contributed in the development of the technology and algorithms for the driverless ferries.

Filling the ferry with technology

Eide says that the research team gained a lot of experience from the first ferry version. In version two, the hull is being filled with lots of technology.

“One of the things we learned from the first version is that we need a lot of cabinet space for technical gadgets. Now we’re filling the space under the deck with battery boxes, the operating system, chargers and several powerful computers.

Sensors, cameras, lasers and radar are being mounted around the deck. “The experiences have taught us how sensors and cameras should be placed so that passengers don’t block them,” Eide says.

Design insights are important, too.

“The railings and bench surfaces are made of wood in the new version to give a warmer feel. It’ll also be quite spacious so that passengers feel secure and not crowded. The ferry has room for 20 passengers, but we’ll operate with a maximum of 12 passengers on board,” says Eide.

Ferry model: Petter Mustvedt, Department of Design

“milliAmpère 1 was an engineering feat. In milliAmpère 2, we’ve brought design to the fore so that it’ll feel safer for passengers,” says Alsos.

Design is one of several elements being addressed, and another one is how to design the ferry so that kayakers and leisure boats recognize what manoeuvres it’s planning.

“The ferry’s still a bit uncommunicative, so we have to develop a way for it to signal to the surroundings what it plans to do in the next seconds and minutes. Being able to discern the ferry’s intention – like whether it’s about to turn right or left – is important,” says Alsos.

Numerous professional groups have contributed to the ferry’s financing, development and testing, which has involved broad interdisciplinary work. The vessels are defined as interdisciplinary research platforms.

Students build model ships

milliAmpère 2 will be a test vessel and comprise an essential element in the work at the new lab.

But more model ships will also be built in the future by students connected to the lab. A project modelled on the Revolve NTNU model is being developed, where students collaborate to build driverless vehicles in order to enter their creations in the international Njord Challenge competition.

Just outside the panoramic windows of the lab is the harbour pool. Here, a long floating jetty has been installed, which becomes a platform for testing driverless model ships. The distances between the production facilities, control room and test area are conveniently short, in other words.

The captain goes ashore

Human beings are still needed to monitor and ensure safety for unmanned vessels. The new kind of captain sits in a control room on land and oversees that everything goes as planned and intervenes if problems arise.

“What we’re working on is the control room for the operators who’ll be monitoring the vessels. That’s the expertise we’re developing in this new lab,” says Alsos.

The main goals are to:

Design good control rooms that allow the operator to effectively monitor the vessels.

Create good sensors and good algorithms for the vessels to avoid and steer away from obstacles.

Develop dynamic artificial intelligence that manages to make the right decisions.

Provide operators with a solid understanding of potential situations so that they can quickly address any problems that arise.

Important elements in the control room are a large array of displays where operators can follow unmanned vessels being tested out at sea. The vessels are equipped with a large set of sensors to communicate with the control room and with the environment where they’re located.

“We’ll use the operators to figure out how to design the displays and to determine what data the operators need,” Alsos says.

“We’ll also measure their reactions using advanced eye tracking that captures how the operators are reading the information on the screen. Biometric sensors will measure the operators’ stress levels based on their heart rate and breathing rate.

From this data the researchers can find out exactly how much time the operators need to gain an overview and the situational awareness necessary to make the right decisions.

“The operator also has to be able to talk to the passengers on the ferry when needed, and be able to remotely take control of the ferry and steer it safely ashore,” says Alsos.

Starting as a computer game

Erik Veitch, a PhD candidate at NTNU’s Department of Design, is a key player in the research and testing taking place in the control room.

“We’re starting with a simulation. It’ll be like a computer game world for testing different scenarios, like accidents, to see what kind of information future operators in the control room will need in a real situations,” he says.

As the operators run the simulation, the researchers concurrently sit in another room and monitor the operators. From here they measure their reactions and can activate various parameters to test for optimal data setup, the best screen layout, and what information the operators need to react quickly and safely.

“By simply starting as a video game, everything happens in a safe environment where things can crash and the autonomous vessels can run over kayakers and so on. At the same time, we can follow the operators and measure how they respond,” Alsos says.

Then off to sea

The next step will be to place an operator on board milliAmpère 2, which will run shuttle traffic across the Channel in Trondheim.

“Once we see that things are going well, the operator will monitor the crossings from land. Once that works, the operator will sit here in the control room and intervene if something happens. In the long run, an operator might be able to manage several ships at the same time. And in the future, the operator might not be needed at all. But if and when we might reach that point is hard to say,” says Alsos.

A human presence will probably be necessary for the foreseeable future.

“It’s a paradox that humans are still the most important component in the entire technological system with autonomous vessels. The more technology we develop, the more we need people to manage, control and have a systemic understanding of it,” says Veitch.

An alternative to building expensive bridges

But why do we want to replace people with technology?

“A digital captain only extremely rarely makes mistakes. Quite simply, human errors are eliminated,” says Alsos. “Another advantage is that the captain and crew can work safely from land and avoid being away from family and out at sea for long periods."

Another factor is cost. One project that illustrates this is the ferry-free E39 coastal highway route. The plan for the major ferry-free E39 road project is to be able to drive from Kristiansand to Trondheim without having to take a car ferry anywhere along the way. This requires bridges to be built over multiple western fjords. And bridge building is expensive.

“Driverless ferries cost a fraction of what a bridge costs. The E39 will cost huge sums of money, while a fleet of autonomous ferries that are there when you need to cross the fjord would be much, much cheaper,” Alsos says.

Alsos doesn’t want to speculate whether the technology will be far enough along so that driverless ferries could become an alternative to bridge construction on the E39. But autonomous vehicles will eventually become an alternative to expensive bridge-building projects. And this is one of the focus areas that SFI AutoShip is involved in developing.

Interdisciplinary collaboration

“What’s completely unique about SFI AutoShip is the interdisciplinary collaboration,” Alsos says.

The center consists of a total of 23 partners from academia, business, government and research institutes. NTNU participants include the Department of Design, the Department of Electronic Systems, the Department of Marine Engineering, the Department of Information Security and Communication Technology and the Department of ICT and Natural Sciences in Ålesund. NTNU’s Department of Engineering Cybernetics heads the SFI centre.

“My idea in the long run is to also involve sociologists and psychologists. They can contribute with analyses of how passengers experience boarding a self-propelled ferry without a crew and what steps can be taken so they trust the technology and feel safe on board.
