this time of year is so exhausting. the pressure of needing to make all of my christmas presents within the next 2 weeks (I'm short on money for gifts so I decided to make art for family and friends this year) would be enough on its own to make me crumble, but on top of that, the weather is so intense its making my pain flare up and I can't afford to be running the air conditioning all the time. I feel like I'm flaring up badly again because I keep ignoring my body and pushing past the signs that I need to rest because I can't afford to! I might just pass out on december 22nd and sleep until the new year. I want to skip it all. the clock is going too fast for me- apparently thats just what happens as you get older. but its not supposed to be this fast. my clock is going at double the speed of every able bodied persons because I get maybe 5 hours of the day where I can actually do things when everyone else gets 12 or more. I'm trying my hardest and am still falling behind. I just can't rest until everything is ready. I don't want to be a dissapointing friend or brother or son because I couldn't do anything for anyone this christmas

Dew Lagoon
Hey there, hip-to-butt ratios. ...Hey, wait, this isn't the usual Taiblog! Well, keep your pants on. We'll be doing another issue of Countdown soon enough. Probably start it in, like, an hour or so. Expect it soon!
But I'm thirsty, and you know what that means! The one blog where thirst-posting means it's actually about soda~
Tumblr media
Mountain Dew Baja Laguna Lemonade
You know when you see a box, I've only managed to find it in cans. I don't always think that's worth it! But for this one, I figured I'd give it a shot. I do love me some lemonade--and I mean real lemonade, not the carbonated kind that Europe and Australia call lemonade. Just lemon juice, water, and a small amount of sugar. Not too much, because the appeal of a good lemonade is the sour tartness to it! That's the part that makes your face pucker inwards, like a popular redraw meme! Mango is also a good flavour that I enjoy, so this is something I'm looking forward to. Thus the justification in buying a whole box.
The box is pretty rad. I almost always have nothing but compliments for the art direction Mountain Dew has taken of late. Whoever's doing these designs should be proud of their work! You got a parrot on a surfboard, pretty cool. And then there's this snorkeling starfish. That's not where the mouth on a starfish is, and I'm pretty sure they don't need a snorkel! Otherwise, really dig the colour use here. Very warm pallet with some lightish blues is the perfect colour scheme to put you in mind of the beach and summer. Well done~!
I always gush about it, but there's nothing quite like the feeling of a chilled soda can between your palms. Gently wrapping your fingers around the frigid aluminium... It's almost as refreshing as the beverage inside sometimes! That's a summer feeling a lot of folks will relate to, I hope~
The flip side, of course, is that once I crack this and we subject it to the ol' sniff test, it's a little harder for me to pick up on the smell from a can than it is a bottle. I dunno if that's true for a lot of folks, but it is for me. Let's hope the scent on this is strong. But maybe not as strong as its sister beverage we reviewed a couple weeks ago, because that one actually got overpowering and gave me a headrush as I continued to drink it.
Mmm, no, the scent is pretty good! Distinctly a mango scent wafting up from the can. Very mango, no hint of lemonade. But that doesn't surprise me, lemonade is a pretty subtle scent. If you get too much lemon scent, like White-Out had, it turns into a household cleaner.
Oh, that's a good taste. Very heavy mango flavour, as matching the scent. But you do get a little bit of tang from it, there's definitely a sour kick in there. That's probably the lemonade! Honestly, this might actually be better as not a Mountain Dew flavour. The carbonation isn't doing this any favours, it reminds me a lot of strawberry lemonades I've had at restaurants. I can't be bothered to let any of this go flat, though, so we'll muddle through it.
I will probably enjoy this, and you might enjoy it too. Especially if you're European or Australian where the lemonades are carbonated and they're probably not selling this!
I also couldn't find a place to work in a reference to Lagoona Blue from Monster High, so I'll just mention her here~

Notes on a Summer (2023) in Portovenere
Tumblr media
Every year we return to this house on Via Olivo in Portovenere. We sit on the terrace, look out over the bay & the boats. Time stops. "Time that is moved by little fidget wheels / Is not my time" wrote the Australian poet Kenneth Slessor. Listen to the water, be water my friend.
It's good to be back.
Tumblr media
We have been coming here for two weeks in August for over a decade now. Porto Venere, a one-way-in-and-one-way-out-village on the Ligurian coast, in the Gulf of La Spezia, also known as the Gulf of Poets.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
This place 44°3'19"N, 9°50'15"W has become like a super fast charger for my family. It's more than that reliable cocktail of sun & sea, fresh mussels & lemon, multi-coloured houses, pebble beaches, deep-fried anchovies and pesto. It's the time to stop. To sleep. To swim in the sea. To discuss the future. My father paints, my mother reads. We cook, we laugh, we eat out on our terrace on Via Olivo; sometimes we eat out in town. We heal.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
This notebook has been coming here since 2016, filled with local illustrations, our gentle exploration of this part of the world, our routines & rituals, what we eat, what we read, what we do, how we feel. It only has a few blank pages left, so this year is its last year here.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
The ancient Portus Veneris is believed to date back to at least the middle of the 1st century BC. It has been said that the name refers to a temple to the goddess Venus which was sited on the promontory where the church of San Pietro now stands.
Tumblr media
In Roman times the city was essentially a fishing community.
Tumblr media
Via Cappellini, a narrow multi-coloured thoroughfare sometimes packed with the Cinque Terre tourists, sometimes not.
Tumblr media
An antique vintage book market in the main square, the scent of basil, water in my ears, sleeping in the sun all afternoon then a bit of CNN news while my father cooks guanciale, adding chunks of bread which cook in the porky oil, fried jewels in the salad we eat on the terrace under an almost full Harvest moon. Waxing (very) gibbous.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
The Monday morning market in Portovenere - buying peaches & green beans, a pair of flip flops & a roast chicken from rude Riccardo.
Tumblr media
The pebble beach in front of the American bar.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
The rocks, and their mermaids.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Biting into a deep-fried anchovy in Via Cappelini. It's hot and steamy, my lips are salty, the air smells faintly of shit & lemons, sweet & sharp. We are in Portovenere and I'm so happy. This basil mojito is heaven.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
There is lots to do in Portovenere. Look it up in an Eyewitness Guide. I have done everything there is "to do" in Portovenere and I really don't go to Portovenere to do stuff. I go for my August Super Fast Charge which gets me to Boxing day when I fly to Venice for a fortnight with my family for our other Super Fast Charge of the year.
Essential Summer Super Fast Charge ingredients: sun, sea, salt, basil, anchovies, lemons, books, a camera & notebook, family love.

Listen, Barbara Creed's work is interesting when it comes to films analysis and feminist theory. I even referenced her own commentary on the archetype of the archaic mother when I worked on the representation of women within Argento's trilogy, The Three Mothers. That's how her work should be taken as ; a subjective (and therefore biased, influenced by her own identity as a white Australian woman) commentary on the representation of (white, cis) women and (white, cis) womanhood within the horror genre. That's what she does ; she's a films scholar and a horror theorist. She's not a historian, nor a linguist, and so she's certainly not a classicist (she's also not a psychoanalyst, and I have strong opinions on psychoanalytic film theory but that would be opening up a whole new can of worms). The quote above is directly taken from her most famous work ; The monstrous-feminine (1993). She's citing Barbara G. Walker (who definitely wasn't a classicist either) :
Tumblr media
More specifically, that little "fact" is taken from Walker's The Women’s Encyclopedia of Myths and Secrets (1983, careful cause the link is a direct download). However, that book has been heavily critisized for its gross appropriation and misinterpretation of many different myths and deities from various cultures and religions. I'm not going to talk about it at lengths cause there would be too much to be said, but let's just say I simply don't condone cultural appropriation by white neopagans. Anyways, here's what Walker says about the etymology of the word 'vampire' in different languages :
Tumblr media
In this brief passage, Walker is herself citing a man named Montague Summers (a clergyman and occultist...) and his book, The Vampire, His Kith and Kin (1928). I'm not even going to make any comment on Summers' legitimacy and work ethic, but here's what he writes about the word "sarcomenos":
Tumblr media
There is no reference to the moon whatsoever. So, not only did Walker misinterpret his translation, she just straight up lied in order to better serve her own narrative, and even omitted Summers' latter addition :
Tumblr media
The modern Greek word for vampire is indeed βρικόλακας/βρυκόλακας, or vrikolakas/vrykolakas. So, Montague Summers himself gives the word "σαρκωμένος", and says its use is regional ; it would come from Cyprus. Now, I had a harder time guessing where he found that information since he doesn't cite him properly, but he does name John Cuthbert Lawson. There is only one work by Lawson in his bibliography ; Modern Greek Folklore and Ancient Greek Religion (1910). Now, here's what Lawson says about σαρκωμένος :
Tumblr media
Firstly, thank Internet for digitalized books, and secondly, I couldn't find a lot of information on this Lawson, apart from a Wikipedia page in German and a page in French on the BnF (Bibliothèque nationale de France). I don't speak German so I had to rely on Google translate ; apparently, he was a British philologist and a lecturer at the Pembroke College, in the University of Cambridge. In his book, Lawson acknowledges that most of his own knowledge on Greek Folklore comes from two other authors (altough he does criticize some aspects of their works, and doesn't seem to take it at face value) ; Bernhard Schmidt and Professor Polites :
Tumblr media
The former is more interesting to me than the latter, since the word σαρκωμένος apparently comes from Schmidt's research. Once again, I couldn't find much information about him apart from a German Wikipedia page. He was also a classical philologist from the 19th century, who collected and analyzed Greek tales and legends in his book, Das Volksleben der Neugriechen und das hellenische Alterthum (1871) :
Tumblr media
Here, Schmidt spells it as "ςαρκωμένος", which seems incorrect to me since the Greek sigma letter is usually only written as "ς" when it occurs at the end of a word. Now, as I said I don't speak German, so it's going to be fun... From what I could understand, Schmidt does in fact tell us that a creature who shares similarities with the vampire and other undead folkloric monsters was called σαρκωμένος in Cyprus. The word σαρκωμένος would come from σαρκώνω, σαρκών in Ancient Greek, and would mean “the fattened” (Gemästete), or “the well-fed” (Wohlgenährte). Schmidt himself cites a passage from the third volume (1862) of a Greek periodical called Φιλίστωρ, or Philistor :
Tumblr media
Here, the word σαρκωμένος seems to be synonymous of βουρδολακας, or vourdolakas. Sounds familiar? Well, yes, it does sound similar to the other Greek word βρυκόλακας... Which, as a reminder, means vampire. Now, I'm getting tired of this, and frankly, I already lost my time. So. Creed was lazy and didn't fact-check anything, Walker was a little liar, Summers just parroted what Lawson had written before him, and Lawson and Schmidt themselves didn't seem to know exactly where the word truly comes from. I'm too bored to continue this little "investigation". This is what happens when scholars just repeat the same thing, again and again. Anyways, thanks for coming to my TED talk, I guess.
The Greek word for vampire was sarcomens, ‘flesh made by the moon’.
– Barbara Creed, from The Monstrous-Feminine.

The beautiful, sensual ingredients of the perfume...
Wild Cherry Scent In Avon's Far Away Beyond The Moon Perfume
Wild cherry scent in perfumes is a popular and delightful fragrance note that is often used to create fruity and sweet perfume compositions. This scent is inspired by the aroma of ripe wild cherries, and it can add a playful and vibrant element to fragrances. Here are some key points about wild cherry scent in perfumes:
Fruity and Sweet: Wild cherry notes in perfumes are typically associated with a fruity and sweet aroma. They capture the essence of freshly picked cherries, which are known for their juicy, tart, and slightly sweet scent.
Versatile Ingredient: Wild cherry can be used as both a top note and a middle note in perfumery compositions. When used as a top note, it provides an initial burst of fruitiness that grabs attention. When used as a middle note, it can add depth and complexity to the fragrance.
Blending with Other Notes: Perfumers often blend wild cherry with other fruity notes like berries, apple, or citrus to create a more complex and balanced fragrance. It can also be combined with floral, woody, or gourmand notes to create unique scent profiles.
Seasonal Appeal: Wild cherry scents are particularly popular in spring and summer fragrances due to their bright and refreshing nature. They can evoke a sense of warm weather and outdoor activities.
Natural vs. Synthetic: While some perfumes use natural cherry extracts or distillations, many fragrances incorporate synthetic aroma chemicals to recreate the scent accurately and consistently.
Packaging and Marketing: Perfume brands often use the imagery of cherry blossoms or cherries on their packaging to convey the presence of cherry notes. This can be a visual cue to potential customers about the fragrance's scent profile.
Common Fragrance Families: Wild cherry notes can be found in various fragrance families, including fruity-floral, fruity-gourmand, and fruity-woody compositions.
Longevity and Sillage: The longevity and sillage (the trail a fragrance leaves behind) of a wild cherry-scented perfume can vary depending on its formulation and the concentration of fragrance oils. Generally, sweeter fruity fragrances tend to have moderate to good longevity.
Remember that individual preferences for perfume scents can vary widely, so it's essential to test a fragrance on your skin to see how it reacts with your body chemistry and whether you enjoy the wild cherry scent in a particular perfume.
Belle De Nuit Flower Scent In Avon's Far Away Beyond The Moon Perfume
"Belle de Nuit" is French for "Beauty of the Night," and it refers to a flower known scientifically as Mirabilis jalapa or Four O'Clock Flower. This flower is renowned for its unique fragrance, which is often used as a note in perfumery. Here's what you need to know about the Belle de Nuit scent in perfumes:
Fragrance Profile: The Belle de Nuit flower is known for its captivating and complex fragrance. It is often described as sweet, rich, and intoxicating, with a blend of floral, fruity, and spicy notes. The scent is most potent in the evening, hence its name.
Versatile Note: Belle de Nuit is used as a middle to base note in perfumes, which means it provides depth and longevity to a fragrance. Its sweet and exotic aroma can complement a wide range of other fragrance notes.
Sweet and Fruity: The Belle de Nuit scent often includes sweet and fruity facets, which can be reminiscent of apricots, plums, or even a tropical fruit cocktail. This sweetness can add a lush and sensual quality to a perfume.
Floral and Spicy: Alongside its fruitiness, Belle de Nuit also carries a strong floral character with hints of jasmine, tuberose, and gardenia. Additionally, it can have subtle spicy undertones that contribute to its complexity.
Tumblr media
Nighttime Associations: Due to its name and the fact that its scent is most pronounced in the evening, Belle de Nuit fragrances are sometimes associated with the mystery and romance of nightfall. They can be great choices for evening wear or special occasions.
Layering and Blending: Perfumers often use Belle de Nuit as part of a fragrance's heart or base to provide depth and a sensual, lingering quality. It pairs well with other floral, fruity, and oriental notes.
Limited Availability: Belle de Nuit is not as commonly used in perfumery as some other floral or fruity notes, which gives fragrances featuring this scent a unique and distinctive character.
Natural vs. Synthetic: Perfume formulations may use both natural and synthetic Belle de Nuit aroma components. The synthetic versions help maintain consistency and reduce costs, but some perfumers may opt for natural extracts for a more authentic scent.
When considering a perfume with Belle de Nuit as a note, it's essential to sample it on your skin, as individual preferences can vary. The interaction between the fragrance and your body chemistry can influence how it smells on you. Belle de Nuit scents can be alluring and mysterious, making them a captivating choice for those who appreciate complex and exotic fragrances. Shop here - YourBeautyUK

Australian Sandalwood Scent In Avon's Far Away Beyond The Moon Perfume
Australian Sandalwood, scientifically known as Santalum spicatum, is a type of sandalwood tree native to Australia. It is valued for its aromatic heartwood, which is used in perfumery, among other applications. Here's what you need to know about the Australian Sandalwood scent in perfumes:
Scent Profile: Australian Sandalwood is known for its woody, creamy, and soft fragrance. It has a warm, earthy, and slightly sweet aroma that is distinct from other varieties of sandalwood, such as Indian or Hawaiian sandalwood.
Base Note: Australian Sandalwood is primarily used as a base note in perfumes. Base notes are the foundation of a fragrance, providing depth, longevity, and a stable backdrop for the more volatile top and heart notes.
Woody and Creamy: The primary aroma associated with Australian Sandalwood is its woody character. It has a creamy and velvety quality that makes it a valuable addition to many fragrances. This creamy aspect can be described as both nutty and milky.
Soft and Subtle: Australian Sandalwood is often considered softer and subtler in scent compared to other sandalwood varieties. It doesn't have the same intense sweetness as Indian sandalwood but still offers a pleasant and comforting aroma.
Cheapest price Beyond The Moon
Versatile Ingredient: Perfumers appreciate Australian Sandalwood for its versatility. It can be used in various fragrance families, including oriental, woody, and even floral compositions, to add depth and a soothing quality.
Sustainable Sourcing: The Australian Sandalwood industry has put a strong emphasis on sustainable and responsible harvesting practices. This focus on sustainability ensures the long-term availability of this precious natural resource.
Complementary Notes: Australian Sandalwood pairs well with a wide range of other fragrance notes. It can be combined with floral notes like rose or jasmine, spices like cardamom or nutmeg, and other woody notes to create complex and harmonious fragrances.
Longevity: Perfumes containing Australian Sandalwood as a base note tend to have good longevity on the skin. The rich, lasting scent of sandalwood can linger for hours, making it a desirable addition to many perfumes.
Synthetic Reproductions: Due to the popularity of sandalwood scents and concerns about sustainability, synthetic versions of Australian Sandalwood are also used in perfumery. These synthetics aim to replicate the aroma of the natural wood.
When considering a perfume with Australian Sandalwood as a note, it's essential to test it on your skin to see how it interacts with your body chemistry and whether you appreciate the woody, creamy, and soothing qualities that this unique sandalwood variety offers.

FELIX BI ANON HERE AND I AM ABSOLUTELY ROLLING your reaction made me laugh way too hard omg. ok if you'd been a stay for a while it's an ongoing gag that every australian knows a guy who knows a guy who knows felix. we dont know if Half the shit is true or not (i have some... Very Interesting claims i've heard, but never directly from the people who knew him themselves... i do believe them tho, knowing him and his predebut pics lmAOOo) but like just abt every aussie stay knows someone at this point, so yeah it Is just your average tuesday here LMAO
abt me meeting him, it was when they came here to australia! i went to their concert and got vip tickets so we got to do the high-touch at the end, but it all happened so fast its kinda blurry. its like my brain just Cant Comprehend the beauty of those fine ass men up close so its just. a muddled blur. but it was hands down one of the best nights of my life, i managed to make our lixie laugh at the Dumbest joke known to man (dont ask im embarrassed) but its been two years and my soul hasnt returned to my body yet. that man's laugh? i want it tattooed inside my eardrums, please and thanks.
I DO NOT FOR THE LIFE OF ME REMEMBER HOW THEY SMELLED IM SORRY my nose is Very Bad i cannot smell things unless theyre like 2cm away from my nose and the whole arena kinda just smelled like sweat bc they set up the hi touch where the mosh pit was beforehand. i will give the insider stay knowledge tho that chris's cologne i believe is called eros or some shit? idr but ik its like $80 and according to the ppl whove sampled it, smells like "liquid heterosexuality." ill have to dig if u want me to find the exact cologne. ON THE OTHER HAND MINHO USES STRAIGHT UP FUCKING FEBREEZE which honestly just says plenty abt those two.
god i talk a lot i dont apologise tho bc theres more where that came from. anyway ur mum calling skz "our boys" is so precious and its hilarious that she roasts you like that LOL but pls. there are no bootleg felixs or chans to be found here. they were one of a kind, aussie blokes are... something else, in the most neutral sense of the word. either they're off the shits completely but its funny and theyre always down for a drink and a chat, or they WILL make you want to commit homicide but i suppose thats just men in general. they dont make men like chanlix no more and im upset abt it!! i aint living no fantasy i just went to [1] concert and my dumb ass bitch ass pea brain ass crusty motherfucker ass of a mind can barely remember. its tragic. im just waiting for them to come back for a take 2.
Tumblr media
FIRST OF ALL BESTIE IF YOU DONT SPILL THOSE QUESTIONABLE LOCAL FELIX RUMORS...... like I need to know if any of my personal crackhead thoughts and impressions regarding The Felix™ are represented. Esp because I feel like every aussie bitch ever I ever encountered is the funniest bitch I ever met without even trying, like funny in a way I can't even put into words, yall just talk and I LIVE for it, I don't even need to know half of what the fuck yall talkin bout or get any of the references, I'm living from start to finish
Also I literally CRY thinking of Chan wearing Eros because I s2g at my last job I used to go downstairs to the men's cologne counter just to waste time and stare at the Resident Hot Lesbian and BRUHHHH...... All Versace scents are questionable cause they all smell like the morning after a Hot Girl Summer type excursion, that one night stand walk of shame didn't even make him wear a rubber type beat, you know? 😂 And Eros is very much That™ so like thinking of Chan wearing it is just like HOLD ON... WHEN DID THIS BECOME A WHORE HOUSE jduehajshdjajshdjsjsge 🤣 NO SHADE NO SHADE 🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣
The REAL shade of it all is that my motha even daring to make that comment is just... So pointed, because she KNOWS that even with the most busted, crusted, dusted, bootleg dreamworks DVD in a cracked jewel case type of knockoff counterfeit "if you squint real hard there's a resemblance I swear" type Bang Chan impersonator, the closest I could EVA get is thrown his discombobulated ass in the trunk of my car after giving him a throat-chop to discombobulate him, she KNOWS this, so it was RUUUUUUDE 😭😭😭
And but like I deadass live solely for the rare lil glimpse of the boys un-whitewashed..... It is my brains whole ass source of both dopamine and seratonin.......... they are obvi gorgeous literally any way but when you get to see their real skintones irl, melanin checked in and present, ugh it's just like (incomprehensible screeching) you know? They're literally perfect as is. I know it's a way more complicated issue than I could even begin to try to understand and I won't even attempt to speak on it, but sometimes I'm sad at how whitewashed they are in a lot of photos cause it's just like, you can't improve perfection, in my eyes at least, you know? Like the Cleo promos I just wanted to hurl a bottle of Lancome waterproof makeup remover like it was a molotov cocktail 😭 and the way they CLEARLY tried to contour Chan's nose to make it thinner n shit, oh bitch I was HEATED, I was like LEAVE HIS NOSE TF ALONE???? ITS LITERALLY PERFECT???? He doesn't need to have a thin crispy lil eurocentric button nose to be beautiful, god fuckin damn, leave that man be. They do look hellllllaaaaaaaaa pretty in every makeup look tho 😳 Ive been saying since my scene kid days, if men learned how to do makeup and have fun w it and respect it as an art form maybe they'd get more of the attention they want from women 🙊 OH and I absolutely fucking died when Felix was saying he wants to learn how to do makeup 🥺 my lil former makeup artist heart was JUMPIN, I was like BRUH I AM RIGHT HERE?????? I AM RIGHT HERE. RETURN MY CALLS SIR AND I WILL GIVE YOU WHOLE ASS TUTORIALS, DONT PLAY 😩 UGH I literally fantasize about doing some really avante garde makeup on Felix, his face is just so visually stunning but also dynamic, he has a perfect face for artistic, eccentric makeup looks, I would die to put him in some crazy early 2000's Galliano for Dior makeup looks. Or just anything where I could paint all his lil freckles like stars with the eye look reminiscent of clouds and the sky............ Since he did say "is anyone gonna have the whole universe in their eyes?" and then didn't wait for an answer 😪

me: ya idk I feel like I'm drifting from 5sos with all the drama and stuff lately
5sos: announcement tomorrow!
me: 5 Seconds of Summer are an Australian rock band from Sydney that formed in 2011. The group were originally YouTube celebrities, posting videos of themselves covering songs from various artists during 2011 and early 2012. They rose to international fame while touring with One Direction on the Take Me Home Tour.
The group have been referred to as a pop punk band in the media, though the members reject this description, claiming that they desire to play more music than just pop punk. In early 2014, the band released "She Looks So Perfect" as its debut single, which topped the charts in Australia, New Zealand, Ireland and the United Kingdom. The self-titled debut studio album was released in June 2014, which peaked #1 in 11 countries, and followed by a live album titled LiveSOS. The band released their second album Sounds Good Feels Good in October 2015 and followed up with the release of a live / documentary DVD called How Did We End Up Here.
