It turns out that over a decade of horrific electrocution as punishment might make your heart a little bit funky!

Dread flooded Laredo as a familiar ache ripped through his chest. "Hang on--sorry." He leaned back in his chair, the sounds of his teammates still coming in clearly through his headphones. The relaxed music drifted under it all, the pops of distant gunshots telling Laredo that the match was still going on.

Laredo took a slow, deep breath, one hand raising to his own throat. Every few beats, his heart would miss a contraction. His head started to spin, and he forced himself to close his eyes and relax. This was fine. This just happened sometimes.

It just wasn't ideal to happen during one of his livestreams.

Why does he look like that

When Laredo opened his eyes again, he saw his chat flooded with similar messages. He smiled, and watched himself on screen follow suit. He was too pale, and the smile was weak. "Hey--I'm okay, this just happens sometimes."

His character died, killed in one shot because he was just standing there out in the open.

The match was almost over anyway, it didn't matter. He felt his own unsteady pulse continue, another wave of deep fear rolling through him. It would pass.

Is this because of that torture shit?

Laredo laughed. It sounded breathless. "Yeah, actually, it's...we're going to the lobby anyway. I can talk about it."

He reached for his water bottle and took a long drink, feeling the wave finally start to pass. He looked just a little less pale when he sat up straighter again. "So I really hate being electrocuted, y'know, like most people. But it was the thing that got under my skin the most, so whenever I'd fuck up, my boss would haul me into the torture room--I've told you guys about that, and zap me."

"Yeah, it was pretty fucked up. But it happened, and over the years my heart just started to get weird. Sometimes I get these spells where it gets off rhythm." Laredo shrugged and reached for his phone. "My doctor wants me to write down whenever it happens and how long it lasts, and stuff."

It didn't take long to add the newest situation to his document. "I'll let my medic boyfriend know too, one sec. He gets mad if I don't tell him when this happenes." He laughed, before taking another sip of water. "I'll just skip the caffeine for a few days."

3. What is your writing ritual and why is it cursed?

i play ridiculous music when i can't concentrate and need stimulation. running in the 90s. mad rat monday. spamton CD. this kasane teto song which i have seen (accurately imo) described as penis music.

4. What’s a word that makes you go absolutely feral?

i can't really... think of any? there are words i like but i wouldn't say i hoot and holler if i see a chance to use them, or see them crop up in someone else's work. themes and ideas, yeah! specific words... idk.

17. Talk to me about the minutiae of your current WIP. Tell me about the lore, the history, the detail, the things that won’t make it in the text.

i've been doing a lot of probably entirely unnecessary research for my latest WIP which is... hm! how about i dm you about that one.

on the subject of research, i'm under no illusions, catabolic seed is sheer scifi nonsense (affectionate). i've purposefully held off from getting too in the weeds with it because i know i would stress too much about complex worldbuilding and scientific accuracy, so a lot of stuff that isn't directly relevant to the plot is broad strokes stuff. as per the main inspiration, wolf 359, i'm leaning more on the workplace comedy at the start (because, haha, i have a job, he just like me fr) but i may develop the sci fi elements more once its time to fully bring them into the story. what i do have is: detailed bios and job descriptions for each character, a rough layout of the spaceship Hemera, notes on robotics and spacefaring technology, rival factions within the worldspace, some alien biology stuff... i'm a pretty big science nerd, and i enjoy good hard sci fi! but we're not doing that here, we're putting guys in situations. this is about genre. verisimilitude. you're getting good old fashioned technobabble.

18. Choose a passage from your writing. Tell me about the backstory of this moment. How you came up with it, how it changed from start to end. Spicy addition: Questioner provides the passage.

alright, how about this part from ch1 of catabolic seed! i made some pretty big last minute changes to the beginning of the fic because the pacing wasn't working, and i ended up pulling in a scene from much later in the story to serve as a dirkjake meet cute.

i like set up. establishing tone, creating atmosphere... the way you introduce a character, even one known already to the audience, is something i think is important and i enjoy playing with that a lot. originally jane was present and dirk was going to be pulling a bunch of wires out of the wall, which jane described as 'disemboweling her spaceship' but at some point i decided him popping out of the vent and scaring the shit out of jake seemed like a more fun idea so i ran with it. this establishses dirk as a potential threat, which leads to the stupid kabedon moment later, which leads to the jokes about the disney cruise liner and the engineering section flooding... i didn't have time to think it through all the way but as far as choices made on the fly go i think i made it work!

dirk being in the vents was also pulling from wolf 359, specifically referencing the character captain minkowski who i felt was kind of comprable to dirk in terms of her neuroses - it wasn't till i got someone else's eyes on it that they pointed out that i'd introduced dirk exactly like a fucking xenomorph, which was perfect, so i scrambled to insert a textual reference to the alien movies and doing some hasty worldbuilding while i was at it.

in general i think exploring the relationship from jake's point of view is super interesting. in an au where they don't already know each other, dirk is an interesting figure for jake to 'figure out' - aloof, mysterious, other - classic love interest stuff. which is perhaps less interesting than their deal in canon, but hey, i'm having fun running with it.

26. How do you get into your character’s head? How do you get out? Do you ever regret going in there in the first place?

hm, i don't know. i hyperfixated on the alpha kids pretty hard so i think i already have quite well-formed interpretations of their personalities and perspectives, it's not hard to dredge those up when i need them. i won't pretend my writing is for sure an accurate reflection of canon characterisation or anything but i'll go read passages from canon when writing and refining dialogue especially. and hmm. i do end up going to dark places sometimes, and nearly every fic ends up quite a bit darker than i mean it to... i'm totally fine. don't worry about it.

36. They say to Write What You Know. Setting aside for a moment the fact that this is terrible advice…what do you Know?

aside from my aforementioned interests in genre fiction, or biology, i can see what i'm grappling with as a person reflected quite clearly in what i end up exploring in my work. i have the past experiences of being a queer teenager who had no idea what was going on, grappling with mental illness and feeling incredibly alone. or i can draw on my experiences as an adult, finding myself as a person, going out into the world, and all the struggles therein.

I've followed you for so long now, since you were 16 iirc (I never remember my own age at past points) so that'd be eight years according to your bio. Not technically continuously since I changed accounts during that time and also was inactive sometimes, but y'know. You had the sunshinesel[redacted] url then I think, or maybe you switched to that URL soon after I followed. I vaguely recall your blog and icon being very orange, the icon might've been a pokemon? Not sure. Since, you've gone thru URL and icon changes (I think you recently changed the latter again, probably for spooky month) and changed pronouns and ofc dropped part of your name, yet you're one of the very few ppl who have (permanently) changed url & icon whom I'm still able to recognise successfully. The only other one I can currently think of has a very memorable name I love that they've never changed since I first followed them so while I don't instantly recognise them on my dash, as soon as I look at their bio I know who it is. I'm not even sure why I never lost track of who you are, I think you've just been consistently posting while I'm on (I'm also German so y'know, time zones) basically the entire time so you were kinda always there, not as like a major component (I don't think we were ever even mutuals but I defo sent some (anon, cuz I'm shy) asks back in the day) but just always there, a fixed point, ein Fels in der Brandung, so all together the changes were gradual to me. And that's nice, y'know? We're just all still here, despite everything. We're grown up now or at least we're supposed to be and yet, we're still here, engaging in parallel play as we've done for years. It's comforting.

Also, I looked at selfies of you for (I think) the first time earlier and was wondering if I may ask where your family hails from bc you somehow simultaneously like my first girlfriend (born to a Bosnian (second parent unknown) but raised in Austria) and a friend of mine (Turkish parents but born and raised in Germany) despite them bearing barely any resemblance to each other lmao

Hey! Just wanted to say I love how your categorizing your dragon records! And I wanted to try something like it too for some of my favorites, but I got a question. At the bottom of your records you usually have Broods labeled down. Now when your dragon isn’t a G1 do you count previous broods or do you count broods only YOU have bred and disregard past broods?

Glad you like it! When I first started this blog way back when, I think I spent the first 2-3 weeks tweaking what information I wanted to keep a record of, and with what formatting. Which every time I tweaked things meant going back and editing all the existing records to match. I have the layouts for my various records (and hatchling bio formats) saved in text files that I can just copy and paste to Tumblr in HTML mode (or as BBCode to dragon bios on FR).

Broods is where I record the clutches that dragon has had with it's mate(s) while a member of my lair (either on nests in my lair or on loaner nests in other people's lairs). So when I first create a dragon record for a new dragon, it's blank, but as time passes the list can get... pretty lengthy. Like my undertide Thymara just had her first clutch today and now has her first entry for that section. Her mate Ararath's brood list is up to 21 entries because he started out in my lair as one of the mates for Anisette, my custom progen, during a period when she was having frequent clutches. And Anisette herself is currently up to a whopping 61 brood entries - despite having gotten pretty spotty on laying nests the last couple of years - and will reach 62 entries in three days.

They are all expert falconers, who specialise in the raptor of their namesake. They honour the old tradition of bonding closely with a raptor, and hunting alongside it. Raptors are sacred to them, intelligent and stunning creatures who must be respected and cherished.
