The Grue-Crew are joined by special effects artist Julian Ledger who worked on the film (despite being omitted on IMDb) as a puppeteer (according to the onscreen credits) and monster makeup and effects under the supervision of Cary Howe, providing behind-the-scenes insight into the making and design of the critters, creatures, and goo. There’s lots of entertaining discussion with Julian, Jeff, Crystal, and Bill. And, of course, bugs, baby … bugs.

celebrate back2school

This past weekend was one for the books.  Our back2school outreach was incredible, but we have a couple locations still serving in the weeks ahead.

I am not going to share results with you in this e-devotion, yet I do want to tell you a little of what I have seen, how it has gone, and what I believe the the largest and most important outcomes.

God has called us, each of us and our churches, to serve others.  We do that in many different ways, and what I am convinced of is that God wants us to help others see His goodness and to know their God-given value.

One of the most important places to share value is in the lives of children.  That is why back2school is incredible.

One day some parents brought their children to Jesus so he could lay his hands on them and pray for them. But the disciples scolded the parents for bothering him. 14 But Jesus said, “Let the children come to me. Don’t stop them! For the Kingdom of Heaven belongs to those who are like these children.” 15 And he placed his hands on their heads and blessed them before he left.

The children are important.  Those who desire the kingdom of God have to become like a child to accept Jesus and to believe in God.  And that is when the desire of Jesus is to bless the children that come to him.

I love seeing our volunteers serve others.  Especially when washing feet and praying over students is the big piece for me.  We can and must speak in to the lives of others, especially children.

Another of the outcomes is how churches are impacted by just being a part of back2school.  Many people begin to serve or return to serving in this program.  He will give us our heart to serve and point us to where to serve.

I can go on, but what I remind you of us the incredible opportunity we have to share the love of God and to build the value of those we serve.  That is what makes this program, back2school, so very vital!

Alberte-Barbe d'Ernécourt, Dame de Saint-Baslemont - The amazon of Lorraine

Alberte-Barbe (1607-1660) was the eldest daughter of a distinguished family from Lorraine. This region between France and Germany is now part of France, but was at that time an independent duchy. Intelligent, robust and athletic, Alberte-Barbe was also generous and concerned with the well-being of the people who lived on her family estates.

In 1624, she married Jean-Jacques de Haraucourt, lord of Saint-Baslemont. The pair rode on horseback and hunted together. Of their children, only a daughter survived to adulthood. The couple would soon be parted as the Thirty Years’ War raged in Europe. Jean-Jacques left to join the Duke of Lorraine who was fighting against the French. It appears that Alberte-Barbe had sympathies for the French crown, as she sometimes gave safe passage to French troops. She nonetheless respected and supported her husband’s choice and paid his ransom twice when he was made prisoner. 

Alberte-Barbe busied herself with defending her territories at the head of a small, but well trained militia. She led from the front, sword in hand and was often found fighting hand-to-hand with her enemies. She fought against French and enemy soldiers as well as marauding brigands, preventing them from pillaging her lands. Her first victory took place in 1636 when she defeated a band of 100 French cavalrymen trying to drive off her cattle herd.

She fought for eight years and her biographer states that she was never wounded or defeated. She also reportedly challenged a military officer who caused troubles on her lands to a duel and defeated him. The man thought he was fighting against “the knight of Saint-Baslemont” and was ashamed and astonished when Alberte-Barbe revealed her real identity before leaving. Her military reputation was so impressive that many refugees came to her lands.

Alberte-Barbe was nonetheless merciful and spared those who surrendered, she also offered medical care to the wounded, friends or foes alike. This benevolence could be observed in other aspects of her life, for instance, she established a weekly “soup kitchen” that fed 200 hundred people, often served by Alberte-Barbe in person. She gave dowries to young women and clothing to young men entering the monastery and cared for the sick. 

She was also a very religious woman and attended the mass daily. Alberte-Barbe was also a playwright and wrote a religious tragedy title The twin martyrs and published in 1650. After her husband’s death in 1644, she refused to remarry. She died in 1660.

Alice Verlet (1873–1934) was a Belgian-born operatic coloratura soprano active primarily in France. She sang principal roles at the operas in Lyon, Nice, and Monte Carlo; at His Majesty's Theater in London; at La Monnaie in Brussels; and at the Paris Opéra and Opéra-Comique. In the United States, although not entirely absent from the operatic stage, she was known primarily as a concert singer and was a featured singer on Edison records. Verlet made her debut at the Opéra-Comique in 1894. as Philine in Thomas's Mignon On July 16, 1895, she appeared in England, participating in a concert at the Masonic Hall in Birmingham presented by Mme. Moriani to showcase her pupils. Two other participants, now long forgotten, had already made debuts in London, but with some prescience Mme. Moriani emphasized to the press that the Opéra-Comique had recently engaged Verlet as prima donna.From that point forward, Verlet enjoyed a successful career, particularly in Francophone Europe. Her debut at the Monnaie in Brussels took place on September 7, 1901, in Verdi's Rigoletto; she remained a member of that company for the balance of the season and later would make periodic appearances there. Her debut at the Paris Opéra, as Blondine in a French-language production of Mozart's Die Entführung aus dem Serail, came in 1903. She sang her first Rigoletto in that house on April 11, 1904; Adelina Patti, who was in attendance, conspicuously displayed enthusiasm for Verlet's singing and offered congratulations to Verlet's teacher, Mme. Moriani. In 1905 and 1906, Verlet played the Naiad in the first modern revival of Gluck's Armide in Paris. Other cast members included Lucienne Bréval, Agustarello Affre, Dinh Gilly, and Geneviève Vix. Two years later, she was at the Théâtre de la Gaîté-Lyrique for a run of Lakmé with David Devriès and Félix Vieuille. Verlet assembled a company and undertook a tour of England in 1910. Other members included contralto Edna Thornton and pianist Mark Hambourg; the accompanist was Cyril Towsey of Wellington, New Zealand, who had carved out a career performing in such ad hoc groups.In July, Verlet returned to Birmingham, the scene of her English artistic "coming out" 15 years before, as a participant in daily concerts for the city's centenary fetes, although perhaps upstaged by a massive air show, not unmarred by fatal crashes of the then-novel machines. She was again in distinguished artistic company, organized and directed by Dan Godfrey: other participants included singers Nellie Melba, Agnes Nicholls, and Harry Plunket Greene; pianists Wilhelm Backhaus, Myra Hess, and Benno Moiseiwitsch; and violinist Mischa Elman. Verlet made her London debut one month earlier as a participant in the Thomas Beecham Opera Comique Season at His Majesty's Theater. As in her Paris Opera debut, the opera was Die Entführung aus dem Serail, but now Verlet played Constanze opposite Maggie Teyte as Blonde and Robert Radford as Osmin, all under Beecham's baton. Shortly after completing her first season at the Opéra-Comique, Verlet sang at the residence of the American ambassador to Belgium. The result was an invitation to make her first visit to the United States, which led to her US debut in August 1896. Among her early US engagements was at the sold-out May 10, 1897, inaugural concert of the Fanny Mendelssohn Society, a women's choral group founded and directed by J. Alfred Pennington, in Scranton, Pennsylvania. Interspersed with selections for the chorus and for harpist Maude Morgan, Verlet sang two songs, "The Kiss" by Helmund and "Les Filles de Cadiz" by Léo Delibes; two operatic excerpts, the Spinning Song from Wagner's Der fliegende Holländer and the Shadow Song from Meyerbeer's Dinorah; and, together with all the other artists assembled, including accompanist Charlotte Blackman, Horatio Parker's part song for women's chorus, composed only five years earlier, "The Fisher". Verlet's interpolation of a high concluding note in the Meyerbeer earned her a standing ovation and encore. At the time of the Scranton

performance, Verlet counted 25 operas in her repertoire; could sing fluently in French, Italian, and German; and planned to make her New York debut at Carnegie Hall on the following November 1 in a Damrosch concert. Some twenty-five years later, ending a concert tour on March 17, 1922, Verlet would revisit that hall to present a program including European operatic arias "from Mozart to Massenet" and songs by US composers including Henry Hadley and Thurlow Lieurance. Accompanying her were pianist J. Warren Erb and a young Spanish-born classical violinist from Cuba named Xavier Cugat, who soon would shift genres and go on to fame as the "rhumba king", the first leader of a successful Latin dance band in the United States. Although primarily a concert singer in the United States, Verlet did perform some opera. In 1915 the Chicago Opera engaged her as Philene in several performances of Thomas's Mignon. Also in the cast were Conchita Supervia, Charles Dalmorès, and Marcel Journet. She also performed with the Boston Opera. Verlet retired from performing in 1920. Thereafter, she taught voice until her death in Paris in 1934.

[e-devotion]

simple challenge

It is not a simple day.  But I want to share with you something simple.  

Often things get complicated, and we might even complicate what is not complicated.  That even happens with our faith.

Thus, a challenge is ahead from this e-devotion.  Take some time today to simplify and think about connecting with God, trusting God, continuing with God and allowing His way to be yours.

Two passages of Scripture stand out in my mind.  And then a closing verse.  So let’s get to it…

Psalm 139:23-24  NLT  

Search me, O God, and know my heart; test me and know my anxious thoughts. 24  Point out anything in me that offends you, and lead me along the path of everlasting life.

Pray this prayer.  Trust the answers God gives you.  Then walk it out no matter what God says.

What did God say to you?

Psalm 23:1-3  NLT  

The Lord is my shepherd; I have all that I need. 2  He lets me rest in green meadows; he leads me beside peaceful streams. 3  He renews my strength. He guides me along right paths, bringing honor to his name.

I shared Psalm 23 with the youth at The Community Fellowship last night.  God opened my eyes in several ways.  It was simple truth too.  Ask God to reveal this to you.

I have all that I need… that is what the sheep said.  Why?  Because the Shepherd was present.  The shepherd provided.  The shepherd protected.  The shepherd led.  The shepherded cared.  And more.

We are the sheep.  He is the shepherd.  Apply that.  And wow, that is good.

One last verse.  Don’t complicate it.

Colossians 3:2  NLT  

Think about the things of heaven, not the things of earth. 

I’m praying for:

Pray for Pastor Dan Caraway as he has surgery today.  Pray for the family of Pastor Clint Clifton as his funeral is this weekend.  Pray for the Brannock family as their mom passed away.  Pray for the MHC warming center and need for a full time homeless shelter.  Pray for your  spouse.  Pray for your children.

A June 7th, 1926 program (playbill) from the one-week, Pre-Broadway engagement of the Eighth Annual Edition of the musical revue "GEORGE WHITE'S SCANDALS" at Nixon's Apollo Theatre in Atlantic City, New Jersey. (The 8th edition would open June 14th, 1926 at the Apollo Theatre in New York City and run for 432 performances.) ..... This series of revues, produced by White from 1919 through 1939, were given to elaborate show numbers much like the "Ziegfeld Follies", but were less ornate and cumbersome. Their comedy tended to be far more topical and, because White had been a dancer, the productions were fast paced and featured better choreography and music than similar revues. Matilda of Tuscany - Mighty in war 

Matilda of Tuscany (c.1046-1115) was born to Beatrice of Lorraine, also a military commander in her own right, and Boniface of Tuscany. By 1052, two years after her father’s death, Matilda was her mother’s only surviving child. Beatrice remarried, but she her and new husband were kin to a prohibited degree and decided to stay chaste. 

Matilda’s first experience of battle came in 1067 when she accompanied her stepfather on a military campaign. Though her exact role in the operation isn’t described, Bonizo of Sutri calls this the “first service” that she offered to the papacy, something that suggests direct participation.

Around 1069, Matilda married her stepbrother, Godfrey the Hunchback, to whom she was still related to a degree forbidden by Canon Law. Matilda had a daughter who died shortly after her birth. She separated from her husband in 1071 and never saw him again. Matilda afterward refused to take the Communion, as if she felt sinful, and the pope had to urge her to take the sacrament again. Perhaps Matilda saw her wedding as a transgression and resented her mother for the choice that led to this situation. 

She began ruling in 1072 when she issued a joint charter with her mother. Beatrice died in 1076 and Matilda would become the papacy’s most stalwart defender. There was indeed a conflict at that time between Pope Gregory VII and Henry IV (then king and later Holy Roman Emperor) over the right to appoint bishops, abbots and the pope himself. This power struggle marked the beginning of the Investiture controversy. The tensions ultimately culminated in the excommunication of Henry IV and his opponents asked for the election of a new king.

Matilda actively mediated between the two. She escorted the pope as he went to meet with Henry and housed him in her fortress of Canossa. Henry crossed the Alps and stood before Canossa barefoot in the snow for three days, asking for absolution. The pope finally had to comply. This episode shows Matilda as a key diplomatic player and negotiator.

This was by no means the end of the conflict. In 1080, Henry was excommunicated again and intended to depose the pope. Matilda stood in his way. A battle took place on October 15,1080 between Henry’s Italian supporters and Matilda’s troops. Matilda was defeated.

She didn’t give up. Matilda gathered Henry’s opponents and held to her strongholds. Since he couldn’t bring her to battle, the king tried to prevent her from supplying her armies, but to no avail.

Then, Matilda managed to turn the tide. On July 2,1084, at Sorbara, her troops surprised and crushed an army of Henry’s supporters. Her biographer Donizone wrote that: “the renowned Matilda was a terror to them all”. She then busied herself with recovering her lost positions, supported Gregory’s successor, Pope Victor III and tried to establish him in Rome in 1087. At that time, she also backed a successful campaign against the Muslim trading city of Mahdia in North Africa.

Though it’s certain that Matilda was a military commander in her own right and  was fully in charge, did she actively participate in the battles? According to tradition, she led her armies from the front, standing on her stirrups as she brandished her father’s sword. Some other elements could indicate her presence on the field.

First of all, there are many references to Matilda as a “soldier” or a “warrior” such as “the most prudent leader and most faithful warrior of St Peter”. Matilda was also said to be “fighting manfully”. The fact that she was called “daughter of St Peter” after her “first service” in 1067 is extremely eloquent. Indeed, this epithet was given to those who “who lent their swords to the cause of the papacy”, who fought physically for the church.

Bishop Alselm of Luca furthermore recounts that Matilda “prepared not only to sacrifice all earthly considerations for the sake of defending righteousness but also to struggle even to the shedding of her own blood to bring about your confusion and for the sake of reverence for the glory and exaltation of holy Church, until the Lord delivers His enemy into the hands of a woman”. This could indicate that Matilda was either wounded or was in danger of being wounded during the battles. Two sets of armor were sold in the marketplace of Regio 1622 and their shape was allegedly different from men’s armor. Those sets were said to have belonged to Matilda. 

In 1089, Pope Urban II settled in Rome with his own troops. He arranged a marriage between Matilda and 17 years old Welf of Bavaria to secure a strategic alliance. In autumn 1091, Matilda sent 1,000 soldiers against Henry, but her troops were defeated. It’s important to note that Matilda wasn’t present during this engagement.

In 1092, Henry moved against Canossa, hoping to deal a fatal blow to Matilda. She withdrew with her forces to one of her other castles. While Henry’s army was stuck in the fog, Matilda’s troops attacked and captured his standard. She kept harassing Henry during his retreat, preventing him from regrouping or resupplying his troops. 

This defeat marked the end of the support of the Italian nobles for Henry. He attempted a last military action at the siege of Nogara in 1095, but failed. The same year, Matilda escorted the pope as a went to France to preach the First crusade. The consequences of the Investiture controversy didn’t end with Henry’s defeat. Matilda was still militarily active in 1114, a year before her death, when she crushed a revolt in Mantua. When her troops approached the city with their siege engines, Mantua immediately surrendered. 

Matilda’s life can be summed up by this quote by a priest who was with her in 1084: “Although she was most religious and devout in private, in the world she openly led the life of a soldier”.
