The Unsympathetic Rob Thomas (Trigger Warning: Suicide)
(plus how Ryan Hansen learned from Rob Thomas' unsympathetic ways)
And no, I'm not talking about how he made Veronica Mars. It was about Party Down, its history, and his apathy-ness when creating the show with his friends.
Based on his own interview about Party Down, Rob Thomas was asked the reason why he made Party Down: The show was a collaboration between him, John Enbom, Dan Etheridge, and Paul Rudd; friends who wanted to make a comedy series based on the experience they had in Hollywood.
He went to this party in Hollywood and struck up a conversation with one of the waiters or a bartender. While his friends were sometimes listening to the bartender telling the story of how he ended up in Hollywood, Rob was listening intently. The guy told him that he was a small-time actor, who was basically a glorified extra. The more he told the story, the more unhinged he became. He admitted that he got depressed after a string of failures. And he had to take a catering job to support his life. In the middle of the story, he cried as he poured his heart out about his failed life and even one-time considers suicide.
As the bartender practically sobbed while telling the story, Rob awkwardly left him.
And this part made me cold in my heart when he returned to his friends - he LAUGHED telling this story about a failed actor who was so depressed that he almost committed suicide. He then told John that this might be a really good basis for a tv show. "How about we make a comedy series about a bunch of losers who work in a catering business, and no matter how hard they try, they will never succeed?"
John thought it was a good idea and was ready to recruit his friend, actor Paul Rudd to be a part of the creators of the show. When the interviewer asked Rob what happened to the waiter/bartender, Rob just shrugged and answered, "I hope he didn't kill himself." As I read that interview (I'm sorry I can't provide the interview link because I don't remember where I read it and it was a very long time ago, almost 12 years or so) I was so sick to find out that Rob nonchalantly telling this story. The amount of apathy from this man, telling a story about a suicidal man, laughing about it, and thinking it would make a good COMEDY series...
Tumblr media
Look, you can get inspiration from anywhere. Sometimes you'd get it from the darkest place of humanity, and it's legit. But... the way Rob was telling the story like it was no big deal, and the lack of empathy radiating from Rob, made my skin crawl. And the fact this is a true story, not a rumor created by some blogger, but a legit interview from an official magazine, made me shake my head.
And the ironic thing is that when Brad Bufanda died of suicide, Rob actually tweeted his condolences. But it felt... how do I say it... empty? It was like he had to do it because his death was Trending on Twitter, and many casts tweeted their condolences, especially Francis Capra and Julie Gonzalo. Francis was a friend of Brad's family, so he reached out to his mother. Julie was his co-star in Cinderella Story. But Rob (and KBell) didn't say anything until everyone sorta tagged them about his death. Btw, KBell never tweeted anything.
Brad Bufanda's mother reached out to me on this blog, and I felt gutted that the show meant something to him and his family. I still remember when Brad and I DM'd a few times a few years before his suicide. He was DEPRESSED. Apparently, after Veronica Mars, he didn't have a steady job. He got rejected so many times whenever he went to casting calls. He even said "The fans don't care. They don't care about me." I was so confused about how to answer that, but I tried my best to encourage him that the fans did care about him. Anyway, he deleted his Twitter account and I didn't know how to reach him until I heard about his suicide.
So... to have Rob making fun of a depressed person who was suicidal and at the same time tweeting about someone he knew who committed suicide is making me nauseous.
Another story about Party Down was coming from Ryan Hansen who was also one of the cast of the show. It wasn't an interview per se, but more like a tidbit behind the scene regarding one of the episodes.
There was an episode (I forgot the title), but if you watched the show, you know which one I'm talking about. It was about the orgy episode where the Party Down caterers served them, and the interviewer asked the cast about how the episode was made; the technicality of it, the guest stars, how they filmed it, etc etc.
Ryan, jokingly, talked about how there were so many nude extras, and some of them were beautiful girls. And as they were hanging around, Ryan struck up a conversation with a bunch of naked girls. He was making small talk and trying to make everything fun because apparently, directing a bunch of naked people doing sex wasn't easy.
Ryan, then, ASKED WHETHER HE COULD TOUCH THE BOOBS. The girls at first were reluctant, but one of the girls let him touch and fondled the boobs. Some of them were laughing like it was nothing because most of them were okay doing that. It was a bizarre situation but nothing new in Hollywood. It wasn't until Ryan fondled another boob from a different girl, the girl burst into tears.
The nude girl said she had no choice doing this type of role. She was a small-time actress and had to accept this kind of role to support her life and school. Ryan, while telling the story, mocked her cry. He mimicked her sobbing and cry "Booohoooo hoooo!" and he had no choice but to stop fondling her boob. He laughed and made a comment that if she didn't want to be there, then she should just leave and find another career.
Now, I don't care whether you agree or disagree with someone's career choice, whether it's a sex worker, nude artist, an extra, or whatever. I do care whether you are dick or not (pun intended), and actually be a human being that shows empathy or something.
The interviews were after Party Down had already been canceled at the time, and I already watched the show and didn't think about the complication behind the scenes. But I lost all respect for both Rob Thomas and Ryan Hansen back then. And I have to admit, I had a myopic POV regarding them when they announced the Veronica Mars movie and their interviews were forgotten by me. It wasn't until recently that those memories came back to me, and I regret having ever supported them and even have a blind spot regarding them. That is why I changed the Rob Thomas Book Club to BLIND RATS.
My point is... jebus, it's not hard to be kind to strangers who poured their hearts out. Don't be an asshole and laugh when someone said that they have a problem.
“when someone shows you who they are, believe them”
Note: No, this is NOT the interview I was talking about. This is a new interview, in which Rob is adamant that Party Down is not based on a true story, very different from the old interview that now I can't find the link. Feel free to believe which version, but I do still remember his original story.

So... last weeks poll ended with only 4 votes (myself included), i guess most of you didn't like Trouble or just aren't familiar with the band. I hope you guys aren't tired of these kinda posts yet, because i think they are a fun way to delve in and celebrate the bands we all love. Anyhow, last weeks winner was Trouble's 1989 self titled album with 50%. This also was my favorite because it got me into the band when i first saw the video for "Psychotic Reaction" on Headbangers Ball. I think it's the perfect match in sound between the first 3 Trouble albums and the 2 that followed.
Tumblr media
A good friend of mine (@goblinkleaver) suggested this weeks band ZZ Top, because last week (on March 23rd) was the 40th anniversary of their 8th studio album "Eliminator". It was the album that got me into ZZ Top. The hit singles "Gimme All Your Lovin", "Sharp Dressed Man" and "Legs" were all over the radio.
Tumblr media
I was 13 at the time (1983), when Eliminator was released and i remember i actually nicked my first copy on cassette from a local record store. But it was the album that came afterwards that is my all time favorite, 1985's "Afterburner".

I think this weeks band needs no further introduction, if you aren't familiar with ZZ Top.. you've been livin' on another planet. But just in case, here's a short bio...
ZZ Top is an American rock band formed in 1969 in Houston, Texas. The band consists of guitarist and lead vocalist Billy Gibbons, drummer Frank Beard and bassist and co-lead vocalist Dusty Hill who is replaced (to Dusty's wishes) by former basstechnician Elwod Francis after Hills death july 28 2021. The band and its members went through several reconfigurations throughout 1969, achieving their current form when Hill replaced bassist Billy Etheridge in February 1970, shortly before the band was signed to London Records. Etheridge's departure issued primarily from his unwillingness to be bound by a recording contract.
youtube
Since the release of the band's debut album in January 1971, ZZ Top has become known for its strong blues roots and humorous lyrical motifs, relying heavily on double entendres and innuendo. ZZ Top's musical style has changed over the years, beginning with blues-inspired rock on their early albums, then incorporating New Wave, punk rock and dance-rock, with heavy use of synthesizers.
youtube
ZZ Top was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 2004. As a group, ZZ Top possesses 11 gold records and 7 platinum (13 multi-platinum) records; their 1983 album, Eliminator, remains the group's most commercially successful record, selling over 10 million units. ZZ Top also ranks 80th in U.S. album sales, with 25 million units.

Ps, if you vote please also reblog, the more people will do so the more this post will spread and the better the outcome and results will be. A big "thank you" in advance to anyone who will partake in this! Yours truly: @necro69mancer 🤘🍻
Oh, and also... suggestions for future polls are always welcome! 😎

Oh also I can’t remember if I asked, but maybe an Oonagh playlist if you’d like? (Lmk if I’m requesting too many of these haha)
Not at all! Love getting these asks :D And this one was waaaaay too fun, I could have kept adding things forever. Managed to wrestle it down to 15 tracks...
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Hard-wrought with Unleashed Storms - a playlist for Oonagh O'Dwyer in the band AU (link to Spotify)
The Dubliners - Óró Sé Do Bheatha' Bhaile
David Bowie - Oh! You Pretty Things
Gang of Four - We Live As We Dream, Alone
Grace Jones - Nipple to the Bottle
Cocteau Twins - The Spangle Maker
Carpenters - Ticket to Ride
Horslips - Hall of Mirrors
David Sylvian - When Poets Dreamed of Angels
Shriekback - The Big Hush
The Cure - Pictures of You
The Velvet Underground & Nico - All Tomorrow's Parties
Shakespeares Sister - Red Rocket
PJ Harvey - Sheela-na-gig
Kraftwerk - Das Model
Melissa Etheridge - Come to My Window
Comments below the cut. CW for discussion of domestic violence, EDs, you know...Oonagh stuff.
We begin with an Irish rebel song, of course. When you can also translate the opening lines as 'Welcome oh woman who was so afflicted, / It was our ruin that you were in bondage, / Our fine land in the possession of thieves… / And you sold to the foreigners!' I think we can safely call this an Oonagh song on every level.
Oh! You Pretty Things is early Bowie from Oonagh's modelling days, having a blast with her friends, living a life her family thoroughly disapproves of, and doing her bit to arm the nationalists on the side.
The Gang of Four track just makes me think of Oonagh's spikiness and cynicism, the way she throws herself into making money from her career and Cormac just doesn't believe she can really be doing that well from such a silly job - though he's happy to spend her earnings just the same. Then Nipple to the Bottle is another song about her and Cormac, alcoholism and dv, her defiance, plus Grace Jones has the kind of career Oonagh thinks she would love. And yes, I realise the song is actually about the breast vs bottle-feeding debate. But I suppose Oonagh probably has strong feelings about not being able to feed Cai herself given how unwell she becomes under Gabriel's care on the ashram, so it fits either way.
The Cocteau Twins track is just so sinister, very Berlin (QP) Oonagh, about both Cormac and Gabriel (though she doesn't know it about the latter yet). Ticket to Ride is her escape to the ashram (and yes I am deeply annoyed Karen Carpenter changed the pronouns, because it's Oonagh leaving, not Cormac), sad but at peace, and Oonagh is doubtless well aware that Karen Carpenter is battling with severe ed just like her. Horslips are another Irish band Oonagh would be fond of, and Hall of Mirrors covers everything from modelling and dysmorphia to the gas-lighting of Cormac and Gabriel. Eerily, the carnival music in the background reminds me a lot of Ticket to Ride, too.
The David Sylvian track is another one that covers her relationship with Cormac, her aunt Therese's deliberate ignoring of Cormac's violence because he's a poet and a 'great man' and the fact she puts up with him for so long for 'the cause' as well. Just imagine Francis playing a cover of this (it's a bit late, really, '88 I think, but go with it) and Oonagh raging in the audience at his audacity, but also being kind of moved that he's noticed and cares.
Softly explore each hallway and room
Like a thief in a haunted house
You never know what you will meet next
A monster or a mouse?
It's time to face up to yourself
Come and watch your head distort
This one's interesting
Shows a crack right through your heart
Then the Shriekback song is one I chose first because of the sound - it's exactly the sound Oonagh wants to cultivate in her break-through, and when she and Thady Boy sing it's precisely this kind of thing. The lyrics don't hurt either, mind:
She rises early from bed
Runs to the mirror
The bruises inflicted in moments of fury
He kneels beside her once more
Whispers a promise
"Next time I'll break every bone in your body"
And the well-wishers let the devil in
And if the river ran dry they'd deny it happening
Pictures of You is for Oonagh reflecting on her modelling career, reclaiming her identity and what she likes about herself. Musically I think she's really into early goth like The Cure.
Is there a flame in the dark?
Is there a bright hard star?
These creatures look the same now
We freeze wherever we are
We wake alone in the blackness
We sleep wherever we fall
One dream all around us
This big hush infects us all
All Tomorrow's Parties is one I had on the mini-playlist for Oonagh ages ago and it's just too her not to put it on here (see also Kraftwerk, Das Model). Definite Nico vibes to her brief attempt to get into pop-stardom, and she, too, has a quirky voice rather than a, uh, good one for singing.
Shakespeares Sister - Red Rocket is a bit of fun from a great Irish artist, but it's also a bit about the ashram:
And then oh, if I could draw, I would draw Oonagh and Marthe going absolutely ape-shit in the crowd as PJ Harvey sings Sheela-na-gig - reclaiming sexuality and Irishness and autonomy and just 'washing that man right outta my hair'. Finally, Come to My Window is also for Them - early '90s lesbian chart domination!! They deserve it.
Life's a bitch then you die
No more dancing in the sky
Part on another star
You can't get there in a car
Find a new religion
Going on a mission
Making a decision
To face my soul

16, 21, and 29 for the ask game
Thanks Luigi!!! Hope you're doing well today~
16. Three favorite songs for sex
Welp. I'm about to expose some stuff about myself. The less said, the better, so then people who really really wanna know have to click through to see my shame, but apologies in advance!
i. "Tear You Apart" by She Wants Revenge
Blame AHS Hotel.
ii. "Closer" by Nine Inch Nails
Blame Trent Reznor's voice.
iii. "Sign Here" by El-P
Maybe don't even click on this one.
21. Three songs from your childhood:
Starting with the most recent!
i. "Dragon Backpack" by 3OH!3
This song is a deep cut, even for 3OH!3, who are basically one-hit wonders to everyone outside of Colorado. I listened to it over and over again in high school, especially while writing.
ii. "Lithium" by Nirvana
How did my mom expect me to NOT scream along to the lyrics when she played this in the car every day? It's not my fault I was six!
iii. "Silent Legacy" by Melissa Etheridge
My mom is a lesbian, and she and her partner at the time would usually get me the latest Melissa Etheridge album for my birthday. I'd make a joke about her corrupting me, but too many people still think gay parents raise gay kids, as though that's a bad thing, so. Mostly I'm glad they exposed me to such a choice queer artist when I was young. They showed me songs like this, which gave me words for feelings I wouldn't understand for at least eight more years.
29. Three songs that influenced you/saved your life/changed you the most:
i. "The Best of Times" by Sage Francis
I think this is the kind of song everyone should hear at least once. Real wisdom in these words.
ii. "Migraine" by Twenty One Pilots
Liking them has always been ~*~cringeworthy~*~ - and Tyler Joseph doesn't know how to read a room and not make tasteless jokes about serious political movements - but I don't care. They genuinely saved my life in my mid-20s.
iii. "Girls Like Girls" by Hayley Kiyoko
I really wish a song like this had existed when I was in high school, but late is better than never. Sapphics, don't forget about Hayley. We need her, and she changed the culture.
Wanna play along? Send me another!

Veronica Mars will never leave you. The beloved three-season series that came back on the big screen thanks to a partially fan-funded flick is returning to its TV roots with an eight-episode limited series on Hulu. Kristen Bell is back as the titular private detective with series creator Rob Thomas penning the new adventures of the snarky sleuth.
Plans for a second Veronica Mars revival (we consider the movie the first one) have been in the works for some time, with both Thomas and Bell voicing their desire to return to the character, specifically as a limited TV series. Bell currently stars in NBC's The Good Place and Thomas is shepherding iZombie's final season on The CW.
So, where do we find Veronica Mars when she returns to Hulu? A lot of details are already out about the new series. Let's break it down, Neptune style.
THE PREMIERE DATE
The new series is eight episodes and will premiere in 2019, production begins in November, according to Kristen Bell. As part of the deal between Warner Bros. and Hulu, all three seasons of the original show and the 2014 movie will be available to stream summer of 2019. Joining Thomas and Bell as executive producers are original series veterans Diane Ruggiero-Wright and Dan Etheridge. Thomas is penning the first script. The writers' room also includes David Walpert, Heather V. Regnier, Raymond Obstfeld, and Kareem Abdul Jabbar. Yes, that Kareem Abdul Jabbar. The only Kareem Abdul Jabbar.
THE STORY
The official logline: "Spring breakers are getting murdered in Neptune, thereby decimating the seaside town's lifeblood tourist industry. After Mars Investigations is hired by the parents of one of the victims to find their son's killer, Veronica is drawn into an epic eight-episode mystery that pits the enclave's wealthy elites, who would rather put an end to the month-long bacchanalia, against a working class that relies on the cash influx that comes with being the West Coast's answer to Daytona Beach."
Tumblr media
RETURNING FACES?
Series creator Rob Thomas took to Twitter to reveal who else has signed on to the cast so far. In addition to Bell, there's Jason Dohring (Logan), Percy Daggs III (Wallace), David Starzyk (Dick Casablancas' dad) and Francis Capra (Weevil). Enrico Colantoni, Chris Lowell, Ryan Hansen, Tina Majorino also starred in the original series.
THIS ISN'T A BOOK ADAPTATION
The events of the series start five years after the movie. And if you think the plot sounds familiar that's because there was a similar one in the novel The Thousand Dollar Tan Line, a book that came out after the movie co-written by Thomas. "Like The Thousand Dollar Tan Line, the mini-series will be set against a Spring Break backdrop, but TDTL is NOT the story we're telling. We're five years after the movie. Books are 98% canon. Pony is included. Marcia Langdon is police chief. Spoiler: Neptune finally incorporated," Thomas tweeted.
NOSTALGIA? SO 2014
On Twitter, Thomas reiterated what he previously told E! News. "I will say this: the movie was nostalgic. The Hulu limited series isn't going to be. Hardcore So-Cal noir. One big case. Eight episodes to tell the story. This is a detective show." "If we get to do it again…I think the way to make it survive is to—If the movie was kind of a love letter to the fans, anything that comes from now on, I think, is going to be about the kickass mystery…If we get to do it again, that's what I want to deliver," Thomas told E! News in the summer of 2018. "I want to make Veronica the first name in female detectives. I have no designs on supplanting Sherlock Holmes, but I would really love Veronica Mars to be—when I think female detectives, that's who I think of."
Tumblr media
IT'S GETTING REAL
"It's going to be a much darker world, it's going to be a bigger world. It's definitely not going to be what we did on UPN or The CW. So, I want to brace fans for that, that it's going to be darker and bigger and more cinematic, and definitely a little bit different," Bell said on EW Radio.
VERONICA MARS FOREVER?
In the world of remakes and reboots, Thomas plans to stick to reviving Veronica Mars.
"What I'm hoping for is that after I retire, some quality young writer wants to remake it and send me checks that's the dream there," Thomas told E! News. "I can't imagine doing it without Kristen in my professional lifetime. I mean, never say never, but I think if I'm not doing it with Kristen, it means that Kristen no longer wants to do it. And Kristen has said she's willing to do it until it's Murder, She Wrote. As long as she holds to that, then I think I want to keep doing the Kristen Bell version, if there's an opportunity."
Bell is sticking by that. "I mean until literally everyone in Neptune is dead," Bell joked. "As long as we feel there's a hunger for Veronica Mars and the world still needs to see her fight the good fight and it still feels topical," she said on EW Radio.

The Montreat, North Carolina Cottage

The Montreat Cottage in North Carolina
26 Jul, 2021
The Montreat Cottage
Original Home of Billy Graham Enters Market for the First Time at $599,000
Location: North Carolina, USA
Source: TopTenRealEstateDeals
World-famous evangelist Billy Graham preached the gospel to more people than anyone else in the history of Christianity. Known as “America’s Pastor,” he served as a spiritual advisor to every U.S. President from Harry Truman to Barack Obama.
Beloved by millions, he had friendly relationships with luminaries from Queen Elizabeth to Martin Luther King Jr. Sometimes criticized for his inclusivist views, Graham preached against segregation and apartheid and urged unity between Catholics and Protestants.
He wrote dozens of books, many of which became bestsellers and received numerous awards including the Presidential Medal of Freedom. He first rocketed to national prominence with his “Crusades” – revivals held first in tents and later in stadiums across the world. He died in 2018 at the age of 99.
The Montreat, North Carolina cottage in which Graham and his family lived during his monumental movements is now on the market for the first time at $599,000. Under the current ownership of Graham’s daughter, Ruth, it has served as a vacation rental in which guests could experience the Grahams’ family life through a collection of original furnishings, books, photos and mementos. Unfortunately, Ruth’s own daughter is gravely ill, and she has made the heartbreaking decision to sell the residence to pay for her medical treatments.
The four-bedroom, two-bath home sits on one-third of an acre of beautifully manicured grounds with mature trees and a paved patio for entertaining or relaxing with family. Stone steps lead to a stream with a wooden bridge and walking paths through the surrounding forest. The house’s charming stonework exterior matches the garden walls.
Inside, stunning blonde hardwood floors and wall paneling provide an atmosphere of rustic charm. The living room features a fireplace with more lovely stonework. Big windows bring in lots of light and picturesque forest views. Unique built-in furnishings match the wood paneling. With two levels of living space, the home has been lovingly maintained.
“This cozy cottage presents a unique opportunity to own a piece of history. Showcasing the legacy of Billy Graham, it maintains a historic charm while offering modern comforts,” says agent Brian Etheridge.
Montreat, a portmanteau of “mountain” and “retreat,” is a secluded village in the Asheville, North Carolina area with about 700 residents and no stoplights. Much of the retreat’s funding came from John S. Huyler, who in the late 1800s was the largest chocolate-candy manufacturer in the country and where Milton Hershey worked for several years. Many of the town’s buildings date to the early 1900s, and it has no commercial development.
The area is best known for the Presbyterian-affiliated Montreat Conference Center, Montreat College, and the Graham home. More than half the town’s land is under a conservation easement, with 30 miles of trails winding through the wilderness as well as ample opportunities for outdoor recreation, including paddle boating, canoeing and fishing.
The listing is held by Brian Etheridge of Premier Sotheby’s International Realty’s Asheville office.

Francis Capra doesn’t have an Instagram. He doesn’t know how to use it, so his sister made an Instagram page. She will post some personal pics, sometimes without his consent. It’s up to you whether you want to follow the IG.
Teddy Dunn doesn’t have any social media account, so if you are following his page, it’s fake. He only has a Linkedin page for his work.
Many of the cast have Instagram and Facebook page, I really don’t have the energy to list them all, but I will from time to time edit the links.

Destaque para a sensacional trilha sonora com alguns clássicos, como ‘Smalltown Boy’ (Bronsky Beat), ‘Love is a Tear Us Apart’ (Joy Division), ‘Tainted Love’ (Soft Cell), ‘Mickey’ (Toni Basil), ‘Call Me’ (Blondie), ‘Karma Chamaleon’ (Culture Club) e ‘Gloria’ (Laura Branigan).
