seeing sooooo much debate about unresolved plotlines in abbott s3 but i think people just aren't realising that the show is moving in the direction of self-contained, easily syndicatable episodes, like a Friends or a Frasier, where you can turn on a random episode 6 years later without needing to know what's going on in the overarching season plot. it's abc's most watched show in a million years, and they are going to make sure they get their moneys worth out of it. s1 was the show proving its marketability, s2 was the show stretching its legs and seeing if it can fill a full season order, and it did with (mostly) no filler, but i think most of us can agree it did not handle overaching plotlines (like the legendary schools drama) in a very elegant way, just sorta fizzled out. it seemed like they were struggling with whether to have season long arcs, or resolve in one episode and move forward - and i think s3 is the answer to this question. the comedy itself works best when a episode of the day's tension is handled in the course of one episode, because they're not trying to juggle multiple emotional beats. previous stuff can be mentioned in passing, like it can be clear that a character is still processing things, but for the show to be easily picked up and put down, the plotlines need to be self contained, and the jokes need to still stand on their own.
apart from janine, nobody is going to get the satisfactory season-length arc that will satisfy everyone. it isn't an ensemble in the way Friends is, this is Janine's (+Gregory's) story, and her arc is the thread that ties the show together, with the comedy of the other characters happening in the orbit of it. i think the more people come to realise this the easier it is to relax into what the show is trying to be. it's why Smoking hit so well - it was sharp and the pace was fantastic and laugh-a-minute and could be repeated on tv at any time and you wouldn't need to know which season or episode it is. That's the direction I think they're going to be taking it going forward. I saw @serendipitouscontaminant summarise (here) Willard R. Abbott as "An Episode of Abbott Elementary" and not "An Episode of Season 3 of Abbott Elementary" and i think that's a good way of putting it. like in the future you'll be able to watch any episode from S3 and just go "ok, Janine's working at the school district" and you'll know roughly where you stand without having to orient yourself into the other characters' spaces. In a short season order like this one I think there may be some loss of emotional beats just because there's less episodes to put them in, and I assume there'll be some Very Special Episodes with a Message going forward ala "Mom", but on the whole I think Smoking is a better example of what we can expect from Abbott going forward from S3 into S4, from a purely monetizable perspective. I think this is only more proven by the fact they're throwing a million guest stars at it (as announced the other day), to catch peoples' attention in an 8am repeat in like 2029. Basically, going forward, if something happens to a character other than Janine or Gregory, we'll see it in that episode and the fallout from it is implied offscreen, with maybe a joke here and there that can still stand on its own (ala Melissa going out drinking a lot). Obviously this is pure speculation but I really think this is where we're going. Whether it'll hurt the heart in the show I guess remains to be seen.

Hint in S3 that Joyce and Hopper were probably a couple in the original timeline
At the beginning of S3, Hopper asks Joyce out, but she declines. That evening, she watches an episode of the sitcom Cheers where a woman named Diane (like Hopper’s wife), tells her friend that a man, Frasier, asked her to marry him after he drank some Chianti.
Screenshots credits to @chirpsythismorning Tagging you too @lilitblaukatz and @shippingfangirl013
In the sitcom, Diane leaves Frasier at the altar. Joyce never shows up at the restaurant. And she and Hopper have been separated by everything, from evil scientists to time manipulation.
But it’s the name Diane and the mention of Chianti, imo, the hint that Hopper and Joyce were together, and that they were a family at some point in the past.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Then there’s a flashback of Joyce and Bob. When I rewatched this scene, knowing what we know now about Vecna and timelines/time loop theories, I nearly spat out my tea.
Bob: They’re funny. I just wish they’d just get back together again already (Joyce: Me too)
Tumblr media
He doesn’t say I hope they get together soon. They were a couple in the past. And Diane and Hopper had a child...
Also, in 3x02 Hop gets really drunk with Chianti.
Tumblr media
But there are many other hints.
Some of my favorite
This one is insane, lmao.
Tumblr media
Joyce’s line in one of the S1 flashbacks: I don’t know who’s been raising you. Then the transition from Will’s drawing (the fireballs/cabbages) to a close up of Hopper’s eyes.
All the Will-Sara parallels in S1. But especially this one. It’s like Hopper is watching Will dying here.
Tumblr media
This
Tumblr media
Joyce calling Will, then Hopper. It’s interesting, because it really seems like she’s saying Will Hopper.
Tumblr media
In 2x04, Will tells Joyce and Hopper that now he knows things that he never did before, and has memories that aren’t his memories. He’s talking about the possession, but if Jopper were together and then they were separated because of a time loop or brainwashing, this scene could be another way to hinting at the truth.
Also: My theory is that Sara is an altered memory and is actually Will or the combination of Will and El, Hopper’s kids, that the lab made him believe he lost. MKUltra was known for this kind of brainwashing.
Tumblr media
Twin imagery. In every season. And always connected to Will, El, Joyce and Hopper. I think Jon is really Lonnie’s son-the reason he’s the only one who mentions him. And that Lonnie is the “Biff” of Stranger Things.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
I also love that in S3 and S4 Hoppr and Joyce keep saying things like Let’s call our children, our kids are in danger... I mean, it makes sense, but IF Joyce and Hopper are Will and El’s parents, when we’ll rewatch the show, we’ll realize that the truth has always been there, from the beginning, like David said. And it’s beautiful.
Not a Willel twin post, but here some gifs of those moments: Joyce, Jim and their kids
The school scene has so many hidden hints
This is why I don’t think they’re misdirects. Along with the big hints we’ve seen throughout the show, there are also many small things that we can only notice if we pay attention.
The hat of the boy behind Will is an Beatlejuice Easter egg. It looks like the hat of Winona Ryder’s character, Lydia. So this could mean: Will and El between Joyce and Hopper. The kids and their parents.
Tumblr media
We see the same boy with Winona’s hat later (the boy under the arrow is important too, lol) and a girl with a school project about the Wright Bros. Yep. Will and El are the (W)right bros. But we already know that they’re siblings. El lives with the Byers. Nothing new. So why these hidden hints if it’s something we already know? Maybe because Will and El and Will are actual siblings.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
The presentation scene is crazy.
Here “Joyce” and mini-Hopper in his cabin, mom and dad, but this time there’s also something more specific. A pic of the Tower Bridge on the wall that is paralleled to the two trees connected by a string in the diorama: twin imagery.
And the kid who looks at us with the school project about the father of microbiology.
Tumblr media
Anton van Leeuwenhoek, the father of microbiology. One of his main discoveries: spermatozoa. But there’s more. The shirt of the kid behind Will. Maybe I’m delusional, but doesn’t it look like a DNA filament?
Tumblr media
So, the (W)right Bros, DNA filaments, the father of microbiology who discovered spermatozoa, Hopper, “Joyce”, Will and El. We even get some Twelvegate crumbs, because it’s 11 o’clock, so the minute hand is on the 12.
I don’t think these are coincidences or things they put there just for fun. In fact, speaking of DNA filaments, there’s also this shot in S1. Joyce and El are talking about Will in a classroom with microscopes (twin imagery again) a DNA filament (biological mom?) and that tape that makes it look like Joyce is tied up... Possible hint that she was part of the program, too.
Tumblr media
And later we actually see Joyce handcuffed and we get this disturbing shot, that could mean that Brenner did something during Joyce’s pregnancy. He interfered. And then he took her girl away from her.
Tumblr media
Some thoughts
If all this is true, maybe Brenner chose this family because of Agent Orange. Or maybe part of Hopper’s story is true. After she had Jon with Lonnie and left him. Hopper wanted kids too, but didn’t tell Joyce about the risk of having children with him, and he contacted the wrong doctor to help them. A parallel with the Creels, only Hopper didn’t call Brenner because he wanted to get rid of his kids. Quite the opposite. But the result is the same. And Hopper, like Victor, feels cursed.
Tumblr media
I just find it interesting that it’s always Hopper who makes deals with the lab and convinces Joyce to agree.
At the lab in S1, she yells at Brenner: You took my boy away from me! But I’ve always found it a bit weird. At least in this timeline, it’s the Demogorgon that took Will. So while I understand what Joyce means, it makes more sense if this is a clever reference to the timeline of the article at the end of the season, the one when Will was actually at the lab, or a hint that Brenner took her daughter away from her, not Will.
If the theory is correct, all these hints could be used in flashbacks in S5, to explain everything. And show that the truth was always there.
Tumblr media
More hints because, why not? lol
A hidden hint at Will and Hopper connection at the end of S3 and S4
And after another mention of Chianti, Joyce and Hopper almost make out in Russia and then they’re twinning.
Tumblr media
This post about MKUltra, Joyce and Terry
Also this post
This one about El and blonde sisters, or this one
March 22. Will’s birthday. Joyce says it twice. This could be a reference to Henry, who’s possessing Will in S2. But imo, it’s also about the other kid that was born on that day. El.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Twin imagery everywhere. I’m sure it’s also related to the Martin/Richard Brenner and Henry/Edward mystery. But Hopper, Joyce and their kids have been front and center from episode one. So this is about them too. It’s all connected.
And speaking of Russia and making out, lol.
At the beginning of S4, Joyce opens the doll that Murray says could be pregnant with an explosive device. A mom with her kids, a boy and a girl, stare at her, confused.
Tumblr media
A few episodes later, Owens says this: ‘It’s a fancy bomb. We used to store them in these silos, but we haven’t used this one in years. In fact, there is no bomb here at all. So we repurposed it to hold something much more powerful than a missile. You.’ Oh, after jokes about working out of a shed.
Tumblr media
So, Joyce has a doll that could be pregnant with a bomb but isn’t. And then we learn that one of the silos that were used to store bombs has been repurposed for El, who’s not a bomb but something more powerful.
Here the post
And the doll is actually “pregnant” with the proof that Hopper is alive.
Imo, the mention of pregnancy connects Joyce, Hopper and El. And the boy and the girl that stare at Joyce when she breaks the doll could mean that Joyce was pregnant with two powerful children.

Season 4 and bonus Season 5 Frasier thoughts! :DDD
S4: Niles's comedy just keeps getting better and better (The Two Mrs. Cranes and Head Game and Thanksgiving were hilaaaaaaaaaaarious early S4 eps.); and his and Daphne's tender moments are just so soft and, well, tender. Thanksgiving: what an episode. Wow, loved it. The Crane men crying in their living room, the banter and baseball gags later with Freddy, and their reactions to Frasier's ham radio show were great! The Maris plotline isn't gone; buuuuuuuuuut Niles and the bird and Marta and the leadup to his question to Frasier and Frasier's honest answer (Ask Me No Questions) were worth it. Bebe was great, and Sherry was... well, she was Sherry. Writing on the wall that she wouldn't last long with Martin; but... I don't know, not my favorite sideplot. Not bad, but not my favorite. :D Roz had some EXCELLENT episodes. And I'm cycling back to Niles, but his and Daphne's ending convo in Mixed Doubles was really, really good.
S5: Roz is pregnant! Roz had a kid! That was quite a storyline. Great conversations throughout, great hijinks, great comedy. In a weird way, I'm glad her pregnancy wasn't made into a big "thing" other than the important points it brought to the plot. (The baby's grandparents-- I love them AND their noses. It just reaffirmed how nonplussed I am with noses, for some reason. XDD But the comedy.) Again, great Niles comedy-- with Maris, with his family-- and bittersweet realities as he finally drew away from his ex. The cruise episode-- priceless. Martin's birthday-- touching. Perspectives on Christmas-- great work (the gaps in Daphne's version! XDD) I was so, so, SO happy when Bulldog got exposed and beaten up by everybody. First Date, Roz and the Schnoz, and The Life of the Party were spectacular back-to-back episodes.
Wait, I SKIPPED an episode??? Apparently, I somehow missed Room Service; which I think? I know some spoilers for but all the same. Lilith's in it and I missed it????
Welp, going to definitely watch that this weekend. XDDD
For me, I think Season 3 and 4 hit a slump that Season 5 launched the show out of. At least, I noticed a shift in S3 that didn't quite jive as well as S1 and S2. S4 had its ups and downs; and S5 knocked it out of the park. Can't wait for Season 6~.
The Sherry sideplot isn't my favorite either, but I like the episode where she and Daphne fight so she goes to Niles' apartment. Mixed Doubles is such a funny, wonderful episode! My favorite moment from season 4 - apart from Ham Radio - is when Niles is in the bathroom at Frasier's and the Hot 'n' Foamy explodes. It's one of the funniest moments in the whole show and DHP plays it so well.
You need to watch Room Service! I love that episode. It definitely has Lilith in it. I agree with you on season 5. It's far better than season 4 and it's like the show found its groove again. The cruise episode is super funny. I love that. the Ski Lodge is super funny too. There are always so many good episodes! Though it has one of my least favorite episodes and that's Beware of the Greeks.
Season 6 once again has some of my favorite episodes. I hope you'll enjoy it too. More than that, though, I hope you're feeling better by now ❤️

Thanks for the tag @its-a-state-of-angst ! 😍
Rules: List 10 of your comfort shows, then tag 10 people
1. NewsRadio (recently did a full re-watch and I still love it with all my heart as much these 21 years later as when I discovered it)
2. The X-Files (been a fan since 1997 - saw the first movie at the cinema and the second movie at the cinema twice, and I even scraped around for VHS copies to catch up on old eps way back when - need I say more?)
3. Frasier (I'm not kidding when I say I've seen each episode at least 15 times and my favourite ones way more)
4. Classic Simpsons (mostly s1-10, but up to maybe s14)
5. My Mother and Other Strangers (there are only 5 eps, but I wrote my first multi-chapter fic about it, so it holds a very special place)
6. Midnight Mass (again, maybe a weird one, but I wrote a multi-chapter fic for it so you know I feel a certain way about it)
7. The Split (I've written a bunch of fic for it, so you know the deal)
8. Seinfeld (haven't actually watched it in a while, but it's always good)
9. Call the Midwife (the ultimate Sunday evening comfort watch tbh)
10. Neighbours (not a show I've ever engaged with in a fandom way, but I watched it for as long as I could remember [we were both born in 1985], so it was very much a daily 21 minutes of comfort until it ended and I'm very happy it will be back in a week!)
As always, no pressure to do this, but to try and be ~democratic, I'm just gonna tag the last 10 mutuals in my activity, so: @lovelikewildness @popsworth @hixipixi @littleredwritingcat @aimmyarrowshigh @theresawritesstuff @ladylannisterxo @markwatneyandenesemble @lazyexceptwhencooking @markcampbells

My media this week (22-28 Oct 2023)
Tumblr media
📚 STUFF I READ 📚
🙂 The Golden Spoon (Jessa Maxwell, author; full voice cast narration) - a perfectly cromulent book: totally predictable to anyone who's read more than 1 mystery but still entertaining in both characters and plot. Gerald, my autistic king, you were definitely my fave. [I did like the idea of having a different voice narrator for each character, since the chapter POVs switch, but the narrator for Stella sounded like the Tiktok automated voice about 90% of the time. I could tell I was going to get annoyed with that & with the way audio draws things out when I can read text so much faster and it became clear the plot was going to be so predictable, so I switched over to reading text ~35%.]
🙂 The Sleeping Beauty Curse (who_la_hoop) - 152K, drarry, accidental soulbond
😍 i come back to the place you are (pizzabones) - 211K, steddie canon-divergent post s4, extremely satisfying slow burn, loved the dual POV structure with eddie in a coma for the first 10 months the fic covers
💖💖 +79K of shorter fic so shout out to these I really loved 💖💖
soldier keep on marching on (waiting on that morning sun) (songofswiftsunrise) - LOTR: gen, 4k - lovely 'Boromir Lives' AU, inspired by emily martin's incredible art
Pursued by Bear (Zenaidamacrouras1) - MCU: shrunkyclunks, 19K - reread, forever fave, inspired by that tweet about the UFC & Shakespeare conventions occurring in the same hotel
A Tricky Bit of Spellwork (AidaRonan) - OFMD: gen, 1K - legit the only way I'll accept Izzy not being dead is this
Ready for Love (idiopathicsmile) - Singin' in the Rain: Cosmo/Don/Kathy, 13K - the Singin' in the Rain OT3 fic I didn't know I needed

8 TV Shows Game
Tagged by @iamstartraveller776 @satineainsel @myfavouritelunatic and @youwearfinethingswellwriter
These are in no particular order, and this was shockingly hard because I consume a lot of media:
1. Frasier — Comfort show
Tumblr media
2. Rings of Power — Current hyper-fixation
Tumblr media
3. Fleabag — Masterpiece
Tumblr media
4. Avatar: The Last Airbender — Masterpiece
Tumblr media
5. Stranger Things — I remember when S1 hit, binged it in one night. That show hit hard when it came out
Tumblr media
6. Game of Thrones, before it went to shit — I mean... obvi
Tumblr media
7. Ted Lasso — The earnestness, I can't resist it
Tumblr media
8. Cheating to say this but all Michael Schur shows

I was tagged by @ajcrowleys!! WAHOO!!!
Tag someone you want to know AND/OR some of your besties.
Favorite color: USUALLY pink, though sometimes it's purple or yellow 🩷💜💛
Last song: I've listened to a few songs partially, but the last FULL song I listened to was "Jack's Lament" from The Nightmare Before Christmas
Last movie: I think it was Far From the Maddening Crowd... (Yes because of Michael Sheen, I won't apologize for it)
Currently watching: Young Jedi Adventures (the show I work on! eps are currently airing on Disney+!) Our Flag Means Death, Taskmaster, Frasier (1993), rewatching Ducktales (2017), Ghoul Grumps
Other stuff I watched this year: GOOD OMENS (s1 and s2 multiple times, oops), Staged, Rise of the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles, My Adventures with Superman, What We Do In The Shadows, The Last of Us, The Owl House, Abbot Elementary, Jury Duty, Succession, rewatched Bridgerton, etc etc
Shows I dropped this year/didn't finish: Only Murders in the Building, Pride and Prejudice (1995), probably other stuff I forgot about
Currently reading: Nothing! Haven't been in a reading mood lately, though I might want to listen to the Good Omens audiobook soon (surprising absolutely no one) OR read Starling House by Alix Harrow
Currently listening to: A playlist I created called "Oops! Longing!" featuring MOSTLY songs from soundtracks - hence "Jack's Lament" earlier
Currently working on: Last night I made a ROTTMNT gifset which you can find here (expect some more soon maybe?), and I'm also in the brainstorming phases of writing a Good Omens spec. For those who don't know what those are, a spec is a script for a show that already exists to prove that you can write for different voices, not just your own. As someone who wants to be a screenwriter, it's a good thing to have in your arsenal (Examples of past specs I've written have been for Bob's Burgers and Ducktales 2017)! If anyone is more curious about specs/screenwriting/WHAT I'm writing, I'd love to chat more about it!! :)
Current obsession: I'll let you take ONE guess. Yes it's Good Omens, great job.
I'm tagging: @wildlingchild504, @hifreqblade, @deerbot36, @anntickwittee, @sonicyloop and anyone else who wants to join in!
