My media this week (21-27 Apr 2024)
Tumblr media Tumblr media
📚 STUFF I READ 📚
😊 rounding third, sliding home. (througheden) - 68K, enjoyable steddie AU with pro baseball player Steven & massage therapist Eddie
🥰 Daddy Issues (His Boy Next Door #39) (RJ Moray) - reread; just a big fan of Jack & Channon & their ongoing story!
🥰 Common Ground (His Boy Next Door #40) (RJ Moray) - LOVE that Jack & Ewan are finding some common ground - really love that this series is showing how two people who don't particularly care for each other can work to find connection for the sake of the people they DO love
😍 ACT-verse series (ann_anotherthing) - truly outstanding series about middle-aged Steddie getting a 2nd chance romance after their first one flamed out 25 yrs earlier. Full series is 117K but it starts with A Certain Type (54K), which is a fully complete story with satisfying HEA - the rest are flashback fics or wonderfully indulgent epilogue/vignettes, full of fluffy and delicious porn. The author confesses to basically turning them into her middle-aged OCs but 1) I think her projections of their characters in middle-age with these particular life experiences seem reasonably plausible and more importantly 2) I don't fucking care because this story and these characters (main & supporting) are AMAZING.
💖💖 +227K of shorter fic so shout out to these I really loved 💖💖
When you stop being a ghost in a shell (Bittersweet_in_Boston) - MCU: Stucky, 12K - Hydra finds Steve in 1952 & then they have The Asset and The Captain. Except they really should have known better than to ever let them see one another.
Where the Sunflowers Grow (AidaRonan) - Stranger Things: Buckingham, 30K - incredible Chrissy recovery fic with bonus Buckingham. Just. So Fucking Good.
Early Returns (rageprufrock) - Inception: Arthur/Eames, 15K - fabulous AU where Arthur's an editor who has everything on lock, dammit & Eames is a reporter who wants to mess him up. Also the newsroom is nothing but a high-pressure high school when it comes to gossip.

oooh wait that's cool! was phillipe on days too?
nah, he was on one life to live. never watched it, but the role was still talked about by the time jensen got on days. the issue of queer characters on soaps was still largely untouched so it was very much discussed by fans and journalists.

A fascinating look at the troubles indie bookstores faced in late-90s New York and how Nora Ephron used a subpar rom-com to bring audiences’ attention to them.

So I’ve seen a good number of people disappointed over the new scooby doo series, so I thought I’d take the time to tell you about another mystery/comedy that might scratch the itch. It’s a podcats done in the style of old timey radio shows, and is basically the combination of scooby doo and batman.
The masked mystery man known only as the Red Panda, along with his trusty driver Kit Baxter, who joins him in his quest against the forces of evil as the Flying Squirrel, fight super villains, gangs, and mischievous meddling rich folk in 1930’s Toronto. It’s got wonderful characters, vivid voice acting, enough mystery and intrigue to last a couple of weeks (or one if you binge the whole thing, available on spotify) and is funny enough I pulled at least 4 coworkers aside to tell them about the character that was just introduced, Baboon McSmoothie. That’s his actual name.
There’s romance, mystery, magic, mayhem, life lessons, an entire episode written in the rhyme and meter of “Twas a Night Before Christmas”, and a LOT of punching Nazi’s. Which is always a good thing!
Please give it a listen, its so, so good. (And in case anyone was wondering, no I am in no way connected to it. I am simply passionate and want to infect more people with my blorbos.)

This episode has me feeling very nostalgic for the deeply weird and wonderful early days of the internet.
My local library didn't have the book they reference but the Internet Archive does!

So my podcast backlog has gotten out of hand which is why I'm listening to a really old episode of decoder ring while out for a walk today.
But this is such a fun story and it's presented really well, so please give it a listen cos I'm currently sitting on a bench losing my mind slightly over it

Das hier halt fast ein halbes Jahr gedauert, aber jetzt kann ich es endlich stolz präsentieren: Drei Fragezeichen paper dolls ™️
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Features:
ein normales Outfit und ein zweites Outfit (plus eine Tasche/Rucksack) und verschiedene Schuhe (shoutout to @peppsta für deren Justus in Latzhose, very inspiring)
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Schooljacket: when you have detecting at 9 but a highschool pep ralley at 10 (ja, Justus trägt Socken in den Sandalen 😁)
Tumblr media
Schlafoutfit inklusive Hausschuhe für das nächste Mal Sleepover
Tumblr media
Halloweenkostüm
Tumblr media
Weitere Besonderheiten/Easter Eggs:

Do you have any podcast recs? Thank you in advance if so!! ♡
-underunderstood (kind of an investigative journalism situation, where they tackle all kinds of weird and funny questions that can't be answered by google, like "how long would an embalmed body's lipstick last in the grave?" or "how come so many hollywood movies show the same car licence plate number?")
-new books network (this is actually a whole bunch of different podcasts, each covering new books on a different topic; episodes are just interviews with the authors. you can skip around to ones you find interesting)
-the improvement association (npr/nyt collab about election fraud in the us; it's got some insights but you definitely have to wade through the expected amount of liberalism)
-food psych (christy harrison and guests on intuitive eating & health at every size)
-decoder ring (willa paskin doing cultural histories; often insufferable but occasionally insightful)
-the age of napoleon (ironically the napoleon centric episodes are consistently some of the worst but if you have any interest in french history c. 1790-1815 there are some fun ones; the host is a grad student (may have his phd now idk) and walks you through the major historiographical trends and arguments on each topic, which is methodologically as well as topically interesting if this is your thing at all)

favourite podcasts? (If u don’t mind sharing)
yeah totally! here are some—
a recent favorite is you must remember this, the film history podcast by karina longworth. the show explores everything hollywood's first century can tell us about the surrounding cultural ideals, shifts, etc. and it's so impressively researched by someone who knows a ton about movies. i started with the most recent season called “erotic 80s” and now i'm in the middle of “make me over” which is about hollywood and the beauty industry. cannot wait for the next season "erotic 90s" but thankfully there's also a huge back catalog.
aack cast, jamie loftus' podcast miniseries about the cathy comics. you don't actually have to know much about cathy to enjoy this lol, the comic is sort of a gateway to investigate the lives of boomer women when it comes to feminism, consumerism, work, etc. it's a mix of interviews, jamie's writing, and even some narrating of the comic strips. i really like all of jamie's shows, she has a really natural style that is funny and curious and heartfelt. her lolita podcast is another favorite that is stylistically similar but obviously heavier territory.
between the covers with david naimon is a longform author interview podcast, i love it because david is best interviewer i have ever heard in any context. he really close-reads his guest's books and comes up with these very thoughtful thematic questions that draw out conversations about craft, social justice, society and culture, feelings, and a million other tangential things. i would recommend starting with an episode about a book you've read before, but now i use it for recommendations or just to listen to interesting people talk even if i don't know their work previously. i also really like commonplace with rachel zucker which is similarly in-depth, it has a different but also wonderful interview mood.
some other shows i like: the allusionist, everything that branched off you’re wrong about (YWA, you are good, maintenance phase, if books could kill), twenty thousand hertz, decoder ring, literary friction, poetry off the shelf, vs., thresholds with jordan kisner, articles of interest, american hysteria. when i just want to listen to friends talking i like poog with kate berlant and jacqueline novak. and the podcast form of democracy now for news. always looking for new stuff if anyone has suggestions! ❤️

Why Do So Many Coffee Shops Look the Same?
On the Decoder Ring podcast, host Willa Paskin interviews writer Kyle Chayka, author of “Filterworld: How Algorithms Are Flattening Culture.” He discusses how the Instagram algorithm has made public spaces more generic and we have come to prefer those spaces.
In today’s episode, Kyle’s going to walk us through the recent history of the cafe, to help us see how digital behavior is altering a physical space hundreds of years older than the internet itself, and how those changes are happening everywhere–it’s just easier to see them when they’re spelled out in latte art.
