4.06 Death Ship
Director: Don Medford
Director of Photography: Robert Pittack
“Picture of a man who will not see anything he does not choose to see - including his own death. A man of such indomitable will that even the two men beneath his command are not allowed to see the truth; which truth is, that they are no longer among the living, that the movements they make and the words they speak have all been made and spoken countless times before - and will be made and spoken countless times again, perhaps even unto eternity.”

Johnny Staccato 1.10
Great start to this, then a brilliant twist nine minutes in makes it even better.
We start with Elizabeth Montgomery as a woman coming to Johnny for help. She has an interesting problem and there’s an obvious attraction/backstory involved so the audience in interested/invested from the get-go.
That said, it still has the makings of a standard-enough story and we can almost predict the beats that the story will follow.
However, at the ninth minute there is a glorious twist and it elevates the story to a higher level. Instead of merely being a solid crime drama now it becomes a gripping character-driven episode as we watch Johnny wrestle with a truly difficult decision.
This chapter in his life tells you a lot about Johnny. He’s cool and smart. And the right decisions don’t always come easy to him.
Best scene? As great as Elizabeth Montgomery is, in all her scenes, the best one - by far - is the short chat between Johnny and Waldo that happens mid-way through the episode. Not only because it so well played, but also because it is the first chance the audience has to see inside Johnny’s head, to see his thought processes, as he navigates his way through the mess he’s found himself dragged into.

SHARON TATE and her closest friends — SHEILAH WELLS (1/5)
Sharon met fellow aspiring actress Sheilah Wells in the summer of 1964 and the two quickly became best friends, even moving into an apartment at 1148 North Clark Street in West Hollywood within a week of knowing each other because they knew they got along so well. Sharon was responsible for setting Sheilah up with her first husband Fred Beir and in March 1969, Sheilah gave her daughter Amanda the middle name ‘Tate’ in honour of her best friend, whom she states was the first person to visit her in hospital after she gave birth. Sheilah remained in close contact with Sharon up until her death, having taken the above photograph of her approximately ten days before her murder, as well as reportedly speaking to her on the phone on the evening of 8 August, with the two originally planning to meet that night, though Sharon later cancelled as she was too tired.
Despite a lack of photographic evidence displaying the pair’s friendship, Sheilah’s abundance of kind words about her dear friend results in her remaining a firm favourite within Sharon’s fanbase:
“From the beginning, my friends used to tease me. 'How can you wake up in the morning and look at that face of hers?' It was a good question. Sharon was so over whelmingly, so incredibly beautiful that anyone not knowing her might think it took a lot to live with such a beauty. But you see that was another thing about Sharon. With all her beauty, everyone loved her. I never heard anyone say a bad word about her, not even another actress. And in this town that's not only a rarity, it's an impossibility!” “I think the greatest thing I could say about Sharon was that she was for real. I mean really for real. Like I said, I haven't heard any stories or news reports that tell about Sharon the way she really was. Even I, who loved her, find it hard to say what I mean so that she doesn't come out sounding all spun sugary. Sharon was the type of a girl who had no defenses, no pretenses, she was just herself all the time.” “I never really stopped to think about it until now, but for the past six years so many good things that have happened to me were because of my friendship with Sharon. She was always there.”
(quotes taken from Marcia Borie’s interview with Sheilah for Screenland Magazine, November 1969)

Kung Fu # 015
The main character in this story is a gambler, played by Fred Beir, who appears in pretty much all the scenes in the first half of the episode. After he is killed off, we continue to learn about him through the eyes of his widow, played by Sheree North. She professes to not loving him, but Caine expresses doubts.
As well as being a character study, this episode is a murder-mystery of-sorts. At first Caine isn’t sure what he saw on the night of the death, and thus isn’t sure who the killer is. But once he figures it out, he keeps quiet. Preferring, instead, to make cryptic comments to the man.
It is this aspect that lets the episode down somewhat when the killer makes an eleventh-hour confession that isn’t wholly convincing, to the audience. We are to conclude, one supposes, that Caine has affected man’s conscience but it happens much too easily to ring true.
But there is still much to enjoy here. Caine’s interactions with the gambler are fascinating. Indeed Caine fascinates us whenever anyone asks him a question. And the fight scene at the end is good.
