i think the reason people mischaracterize toph as excessively violent or as callous & unfeeling is that they don't get what the show was trying to do with the concept of neutral jing. yes, toph is often the first person to jump into action when battle's involved and the last person to speak up when there's a serious emotional issue or discussion to be had, but that's because her main skill is listening & observation. her seismic sense means she can sense a physical threat earlier than other people, but when it comes to emotional issues or ethical dilemmas she wants to wait until she's heard the full story. she's not first to violence because she's aggressive, it's because she's observant. she's not last to speak up because she doesn't care, it's because she's listening and waiting for the right moment to jump in. she's also fiercely independent (as a rebellion against her parents), and she offers others the same courtesy. she doesn't want people in her business telling her how to live her life so she won't do that to you.

toph's arc is about learning she doesn't have to be so independent, that she can accept help from others and be part of a team. but it's not that she starts out not caring about other people. it's that her idea of respect is shaped by what she wishes was offered to her. she learns you can accept help & care from others and that still means they respect you and see you as a full person.

listening and observing, waiting for the right moment to act, isn't cold or callous or violent. it just means that if you aren't paying attention, the only time you'll notice her is when she leaps into action or gives her blunt opinion, and you'll miss the thoughtful consideration that got her there

Every now and then I see a post on here like oh men having long hair is overdone oh men wearing nail polish and guyliner is overdone and cringe stop praising them. And I'm like. In what world? This must be some kind of Internet Phenomenon that I've never seen before bc when I see a guy with JUST long hair in public I feel like I've seen a fairy, especially if it's even longer than shoulder length, like. while i know itsay is technically a nadao series, but like in my mind nadao and gdh are basically twin companies because nadao itself is originally made as a talent management camp to manage the gdh actors and actresses. nadao only started making tv series by means of training their talents' acting skills but they ended up becoming so good at it. in fact, they share a majority of writers/directors as well so for me, i always felt like itsay was a gdh-coded series, like you know a coming-of-age story with a lovable jerk of a protagonist whose journey we follow from start to finish.

if gdh ever decides to shift its focus on making (queer) series... it's over for all bl/gl/ql focused production houses i kid you not.

*sighs* i'm constantly thinking about former nadao artists and how these hormones/project s series actors have been able to branch out and engage in lots of different genres of works following their series ending/nadao bangkok closing. especially nadao actors not shying away from starring in queer roles in future works following nadao closing down (nonkul, tor, jj, pond, thanaerng, ryu ingkarat, junior panachai, pearwah...)

nadao always called itself an artist management company (and they are) but i think they were much better at producing series for their artists than they were at actually managing and giving works to their artists (affectionate).
