#shepropchallenge day 19: Cosplay you’re most proud of If you’ve followed me on social media for any length of time you likely know that I won the needlework category of the costume contest at Star Wars Celebration Chicago with my Fireside Padme Gown. What you may not know was that I made this costume while recovering from a very debilitating concussion that left me suffering from the symptoms of post concussion syndrome for over a year. I’m most proud of this costume because of what I fought through to get it through to the end of that contest. For most of this costume build, I could only tolerate looking at screens for very short periods of time. I prioritized my screen time for looking at references for this costume, doing other research, and shopping for supplies. I found a reasonably priced copy of Dressing a Galaxy so I could use the book reference images and avoid looking at screens for the details those showed. I’ve been an avid reader since I was little, but I couldn’t handle reading on paper, the e-ink screen of my Kindle, or regular screens, and I could not handle watching TV, so the dozens and dozens of hours I spent working on this costume were accompanied by many many Star Wars audiobooks checked out digitally from the library. We were very concerned with how well I would be able to manage the contest considering that loud noises, loud sounds, and busy environments were awful for my concussion symptoms. But I took it easy before the contest and the freight train of symptoms held off until we made it back to our hotel room after the contest. (By that point I could barely put together words to tell my husband what I wanted for dinner. This wasn’t unusual or unexpected- word retrieval issues were a big problem and for a long time I’d reach that point every evening.)
